While the editor of this fine annual collection, Marcy Sheiner, argues in her introduction that these stories dwell on "the darker side of sex"--revenge, anger, grief--there is a redemptive quality to passion that often outweighs whatever unworthy motives may have inspired the deed. Although there is plenty of frivolous, one-handed reading in this year's edition, many of the pieces included have the hallmarks of literary fiction; they are not merely about a sexual event, but offer a revelation of character through that event. Lisa Glatt's "Waste," Anne Tourney's "Rope Burn," and Susannah Indigo's "The Language of Snakes" would shine in any short story anthology. Yet even the simplest and most graphic stories here can surprise the reader with their casual illuminations. In Tabitha Flyte's "After Loss," for example, a young woman and her brother-in-law stumble into sex after returning from her father's funeral. When she first feels his comforting arms around her, she reflects on how differently men and women embrace: "When I am hugged by a woman I feel that the arms around me say, 'Yes, you can do it, you can.' When I am held by a man I feel that I am being told, 'No, you don't have to do it, you don't.'" A remarkable volume, evidence of the considerable talent being directed toward erotica in recent years. --Regina Marler

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful.......2005-04-05

First, I would like to point out that this anthology seems to be geared toward heterosexual women, although there are a couple lesbian/bisexual stories. If you prefer stories with a lesbian or bisexual bent, then I suggest passing on this and picking up an anthology geared specifically toward lesbian/bi sex. It should also be said that if you are a fan of the erotic anthologies edited by Susie Bright, you may not like this anthology as this book stays away from the shocking just for the sake of being shocking material so often present in Ms. Bright's anthologies.

I've read innumerable erotic anthologies, and this is by far my favorite. Not only are the stories intelligent, but they stay away from the old, boring, technical descriptions of the in/out. If you like an erotic story that is very sexually detailed (like a sports play by play), then you may not like this. Instead, and refreshingly, most of the authors ventured into the deeper aspects of sex.

In the opening story, Nine Seven Zero, the narrator tells us how her boyfriend, as he is leaving her, helped her break free of her destructive sexual binds. In "The C*** Book, we learn the story of John's "Uncle Jacques", who took pictures of women's genitals over the course of 80 years and collected them in a book. Intrigued, the narrator lets John take her picture, and for the first time is able to see herself as a man would see her. In "Just Passing Through" a woman disguises herself as a man and goes to a gay nightclub to find out what sex is like between two men.

I thought the best story was "What the Box Fan Saw", a story of incredibly passionate sex stemming from a fight. This anthology pays as much attention to how things are said as to what is being said. If you enjoy erotica that is intelligent, well written, and aims to get you genuinely aroused instead of merely shocking you, then you'll like this anthology.

5 out of 5 stars Just great.......2005-01-13

Excellent writing and terrific story-telling. It's clear from this volume that women really trump men in sensual, to-the-core descriptions of the sexual experience.

2 out of 5 stars Best Women's Erotica?.......2004-06-17

"The Best Women's Erotica," edited by Marcy Sheiner is composed of 18 erotic short stories written by women supposedly for women. It starts out with a sultry story called "Interrogation," by Susan St. Aubin, but heads down hill fast from there.

I have read short stories in English 110 at the local community college that were more erotic than some the of stories in this book such as "Service Entrance," by Kristina Wright or "Jacks Pride," by Emma Holly. It appears to be geared mainly towards heterosexual middle aged women and MEN. I was rather shocked at all of the stories geared towards the stimulation of the characters male counter parts. While there was some cunnilings in the stories, the constant emphasis was on the women pleasing their men. The stories simply were not detailed enough about the art of orally stimulating a woman, as a matter of fact in a couple of them one gets the feeling the writers are almost embarrassed to be writing about it. I found a bit annoying to say the least. As fantasies by women, for women should focus more on women. Not women going down on men in 80% of the stories. Also it had little to NO ethnicity to it. Shame on you ladies in the melting pot of America!

If your a feminine lesbian or a bisexual female looking for a hot story on a cold winters night then I would suggest moving on. As far as the lesbian community goes it had a couple poorly written "Butch" (Yes in the stories the characters refer to themselves as butches, it's not just my observation.) stories worthy of toilet humor at best. After I finished reading it I thumbed back through noting the difference between the detailed writing style on the heterosexual stories verses the couple of butch stories. That totally blew my mind since according to most surveys sex between the average man and woman last between 20 - 30 minutes according to several different surveys (...)

This 2003 edition has been out for quite some time and the description provided by Amazon refers to a previous edition in the collection. I hoped they were just a little behind but with the 2004 edition on the horizon, I hope that Amazon soon changes the book description to reflect the contents of BWE2003 instead of 2001 or whichever ed. this refers to.

5 out of 5 stars Intelligent erotica.......2003-04-20

I'm generally not an erotica fan but borrowed the book from my wife. Some of the stories were stereotypical erotica, but a lot of them surprised me. There are a lot of stories of great literary quality. I really enjoyed the book.

1 out of 5 stars Also Disappointed.......2002-09-18

I'm not sure this book is flawed because of the committed relationships theme. Rather the writing was much weaker, and the plotlines (to include the often lukewarm sex) much less compelling than previous collections.

2 out of 5 stars Wayyyyyyyyy too tame to be called erotica.......2002-09-09

Each of the stories in this collection are excellently written short stories exploring sexuality. But, as for erotica, I found them way too tame. I am a woman and I need "foreplay" even in my sexy reading, but I also need some action. I have kept this book by my bed, giving it a second chance several times, and every time, I am completely disappointed. The "good parts" are too few and far between.

2 out of 5 stars Disappointing........2002-04-16

I picked this up on the strength of earlier Herotica collections, which I enjoyed. I wish I'd read the publisher's notes more carefully: despite the editor brightly commenting on how hot these stories are about ...committed relationships, I really didn't want to read an anthology limited to that.

I was utterly horrified by "Mourning the Peasant"; it started out dull, then when I realized the narrator was actually going to sleep with her father's lover, I just skipped to the next story. There were actually a couple of dull stories in this anthology. The only reason I haven't relegated my copy to the thrift store pile is the story "Three Note Harmony," a rather hot MMF threesome tale.

5 out of 5 stars Soft and tender delivers as promised...........2001-05-03

What a pleasant surprise to find a compilation of erotic stories that were obviously selected by the editor, Marcy Sheiner, for excellence in erotic lit.

Too many times I have been seduced into buying collections that appeared very suspiciously as an editor pandering to some group of friends or 'wanna be' erotic authors only to find most of the stories were dumb, unrealistic and just plain bad.

Herotica 6 is a collection of 21 short stories that reach across a broad spectrum of eroticism. Although I can't truthfully say I liked EVERY story I can say that they were all written with great attention paid to the sensitivity of the reader allowing us a few private moments to muse and daydream, and, after isn't that what it's all about.

5 out of 5 stars So THAT'S what sex in a relationship can be like..........2000-08-08

I enjoyed every story in this collection to one degree or another. I was especially moved by "Mourning the Peasant." "Lesbian Bed Death" made me laugh out loud. I loved the surprise ending of "Blue Moon," even though I saw it coming. Made you rethink what sex in long-term relationships can be like. And yes, reading stories like these help!

    Book Description

From Erotique Noire to On a Bed of Rice and Pleasure in the Word, ethnically themed collections are becoming more and more popular among readers of erotica. The Oy of Sex represents the first anthology of Jewish women's erotica by mainstream authors including Joan Nestle (author of A Fragile Union); Robin Bernstein (editor of Bridges, a journal of Jewish feminist culture and politics); and Judith Arcana (author of Grace Paley's Life Stories, A Literary Biography). The stories in The Oy of Sex are laden with Jewish symbols, holy days, customs, and cultural references -- along with zaftig women, tempting food, and a hefty dose of Yiddish humor!

    Customer Reviews:

    5 out of 5 stars I loved it!.......2005-03-09

"The Oy of Sex" is a collection of erotica by Jewish women (except for Carol Queen, the token shiksa). The stories celebrate Jewish female sexuality, lament body image issues, and have Yiddush phrases and references to Jewish customs liberally sprinkled throughout (don't worry--there's a glossary at the back). It's the only erotica anthology I've seen with personal ads (from Israel) that had me bursting out laughing. Some of the stories are not overtly sexy: one of my favorites, Leslea Newman's "The Babka Sisters," features an elderly woman in a nursing home who narrates the tale of falling in love as a teenager, losing the one she loves, and then finding her again as a 50-something widow. It it not necessarily sexy, but it is a beautifully bittersweet story. And that is the Jewish condition: with joy sometimes comes sorrow and vice versa. It is why the bitter herbs are dipped in charoset on Passover.

5 out of 5 stars Oy! Oh my!.......2000-03-21

Move over Susie Bright because this collection is awesome! You don't have to be Jewish to appreciate the great variety of well-written erotica in this book. I'm not; although I've studied Judaism. This shiksa enjoyed the book tremendously and as the other reviewer stated this collection is worth sharing! My only disappointment was later not finding any books in print authored by one of the contributors to this collection, Susanna Herbert. I loved her style.

    Customer Reviews:

2 out of 5 stars Meh.... Erotic? Ummmm... where?.......2006-05-29

Save your money, seriously. Most of these stories are mediocre at best. Some are written so horridly, I can't believe they actually got into a book titled "The Best". You'll find better erotica on AFF. net or Mediaminer (dig around, good fic exists). For free.

More than half of these little tales, are angsty and depressing. Which is fine, if you're doing a "Best of Womens Angst" book. Erotica? Where??? Just because theres a minimum of one sex scene in each story, does not make it erotic. There's no seduction to the reader, no introspection, and hell, not even the smut scenes are that hot.

I was incredibly disappointed with this book, I do not recommend it at all.

    1 out of 5 stars disappointing.......2006-01-21

For me, nothing's worse than ending a story feeling down and depressed, and at least 80% of the stories had that effect on me. Oh, yes, they used all of the "words" you expect in erotic writing, but oddly enough that's all they were...just words without a real feeling of heat or arousal. I actually tore the book up and threw it away.

    5 out of 5 stars A Fitting Climax.......2005-09-10

It must have been incredibly difficult to choose the best stories from Marcy Sheiner's six years of editing this series, but this book provides a wonderfully varied sampling of the skills and passions of women writing erotica in this decade.

5 out of 5 stars This new edition does not disappoint.......2004-02-11

I buy this book every year, and I take my time reading the stories. There are always one or two that don't do much for me, but the vast majority are beautifully written, emotionally charged stories by women who understand what erotica really is. These are stories with depth first, sex second. Truly a keeper -- the one is no exception to Sheiner's excellent assembly of writers.

4 out of 5 stars Stories by women not afraid to go there..........2003-12-18

As an avid reader of good erotica I am ashamed to say that this was my first foray into Marcy Sheiner's "Best" series. I am glad, however, that I did. Among the twenty selections were gems by well known vets of the genre as well as a few fresh faces on the erotic literary scene.

There were stories that I devoured right away... Adhara Laws thoughtful and amusing "Menage a Cart," Maria Elana de la Selva's sharp and poignant "Cutting Loose..."

Others I saved for more leisurely days... Helena Settimana's graceful "What She Was Thinking," and Danielle Smith's wonderful "Brushing Back The Years...."

I took Sacchi Green's "Alternate Lives" to bed with me one cold, rainy night having started and stopped it more than once. It quickly proved to be one of my favorites in the collection with memorable characters, a gripping story line and smart, sexy writing that will stay with me for many nights to come.

And the most memorable and perhaps the greatest testament to author's willing to go there, Tenille Brown's touching "Dissolve" which explores one couples dramatic shift in relationship dynamics on the morning of one of the nation's greatest tragedies and Susan St. Aubin's thought provoking tale of what might have been in the case of two high profile extramarital affairs in the world of politics in "A Love Drive-By."

While the collection proved satisfying enough, I felt it could have stood to be a bit more diverse and there was a story or two that made me question what about it made it "Best." I do recommend it to lovers of good, good erotic writing.

Whether you're an older women; in love with an older women; want to be an older woman; or are dying to have an older woman, there's a story in this collection for you--salacious, emotional, funny. Book Description

Perfectly Normal addresses with unprecedented honesty a mother's experience raising a child with a disability—hydrocephalus. This condition causes spinal fluid to accumulate in the head, making it grow, sometimes causing brain damage. A surgical procedure developed only a few years prior to Daryl's birth has kept him alive; he is now thirty-six and lives a fully independent life.

The author was nineteen when faced with this difficult life situation. She worked through years of denial, anger, resentment, and fear; she battled with the medical profession, the educational system, and the vast array of social service providers who invaded her life. Her journey radicalized her with regard to the way society treats people with disabilities; by the time Daryl reached adulthood she was involved with and writing about the Disability Rights Movement. She speaks with absolute candor about personal difficulties and social injustice. She tells her story with unflincg self-examination, with no attempts to be "inspirational." She shows what it's really like to raise a child with a disability in America, particularly in the uncaring social climate of thirty years ago, some aspects of which persist even today.

      Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Excellent book about a good friend.......2004-07-19

I loved this book! I have "hydro," as so many of us call it, and Daryl, Marcie's son, is a friend of mine. He is only slightly older, and although he has been through a lot more than I have, I think this book would be encouraging and uplifting to anyone, especially a parent facing a diagnosis of hydro in a child.

I was touched by this book in two ways. Besides having hydro, I have a son with autism and Chiari malformation (herniated cerebellum), and I identified with a lot of Marcie's frustration with parents of "normal" kids who just don't get how we feel when they complain of things like runny noses and ear infections after we have been through serious health situations with our kids. She writes candidly and sometimes brutally honestly about it.

I said four stars because, although I loved the book and would recommend it to anyone who needs encouragement when facing a situation like this, she is oftentimes a bit too open about certain aspects of her life that have nothing to do with Daryl's hydro...and the language can be shocking to someone who isn't expecting it. If you can handle that, I know you'll benefit from this honest, compassionate story.

5 out of 5 stars Realistic and Marvelous.......2003-04-14

Sheiner's memoir of dealing with her child's disability is beyond inspirational. For those who have grown tired of memoirs that sugar-coat the realities of how children with disabilities, and especially their parents, are treated within the medical community, this is a realistic account. Sheiner shares raw reality--this is quality writing.

She absolutely nailed the most painful themes associated with having a child with hydrocephalus (or similar conditions) from a MOTHER'S perspective.

Although I had a difficult time relating to the marital issues and women's liberation struggles specific to this author (she was only 19 when she had her son in 1965) I found the central themes associated with mothering an ill child to be very powerful.

The author articulates the pain, frustration, anger and other raw emotion only a mother faced with such circumstances can know. I'm going to ask my husband and my own mother to read it next.

1 out of 5 stars depressing, sad, self-absorbed.......2002-10-30

I thought there might be something of value here re kids with disabilities, but there's nothing but a general whine about 'poor me'. Many women just aren't cut out to be mothers, and it's unfortumate for the child's sake that they can't know this beforehand. Disabled children are children just the same, it only takes more patience and effort to thrive.
