        4 out of 5 stars Fast & Easy-to-use Guide Organized by Bloom-Time.......2000-05-22

The focus of this excellent wildflower guide to flowers found in the Smokies is to tell WHERE and WHEN to find them in bloom. The book relies upon color plates for ID and is limited enough (only 144 pages) to allow a quick scan of all the photos when searching to ID that elusive flower. Although not nearly so complete as THE AUDUBON GUIDE TO EASTERN WILDFLOWERS (my overall favorite), this book has become my LOCAL favorite for use during outings in the Smokies.

Wildflower enthusiasts of all types should have this book in their pocket when hiking in the Smokies. It will save you time because it focuses only on about 225 flowers found in the Smokies. If you've located in the book one or two types of flowers in bloom in the area where you are hiking then you'll be within 5 or 6 pages of the correct location for all the other flowers in bloom at that particular time!

Other nice features of the book include the ring binding which allows it to open easily, the manner in which all color plates are on the right side so as to allow thumbing thru in search of the correct plate and the excellent close-up color photos of the flowers.

My primary complaint is that the book doesn't offer photos of MORE species of flowers--hey there are over 1,500 species in the Smokies--but this book is rarely a disppointment for me, an avid wildflower enthusiast who spends at least one or two days/week hiking in the Smokies during warm weather months.

        Book Description

This children's classic, first published in 1881, which tells the story of the widowed Mrs. Pepper and her five children-Ben, Polly, David, Joel, and Phronsie, continues to resonate with readers today. Without being saccharine, the book reveals the true value of family. When the children, or Five Little Peppers as they are known in Badgertown, wish they could afford a special birthday celebration for their mother, Mamsie, she says, with a smile like a flash of sunshine, "I don't want any other celebration . . . than to look around on you all. I'm rich now, and that's a fact." This is the first in a series of books about the inhabitants of the Little Brown House.

No, said Polly, firmly; "not one, Joe; she'll guess if you do." But Mrs. Pepper was so utterly engrossed with her baby when she came home and heard the account of the accident, that she wouldn't have guessed if there'd been a dozen cakes in the cupboard. Joel was consoled, as his mother assured him in a satisfactory way that she never should think of blaming him.

1 out of 5 stars Worst possible edition of a classic story.......2007-05-15

I bought this book as a gift b/c I remember loving it as a child. This edition is very poorly edited & filled with typos. There are even several sections where whole paragraphs are repeated. Its obvious this publisher doesn't care enough to have someone proofread the editions they sell.

5 out of 5 stars Old Fashioned, but Charming.......2006-08-29

"The Five Little Peppers" are Ben, Polly, Joel, Davie, and Phronsie. Their father died when Phronsie was a baby and Mrs. Pepper struggles to earn enough money to support the family. Despite their poverty, they are a loving family, full of spirit and adventure. Ben and Polly do what they can to support the family, but a bout with measles threatens the well being of the entire Pepper clan, especially Joel and Polly. The family has other adventures and befriend Jasper King during one of them. This friendship will enrich their lives in ways they never thought would be possible.

It's always interesting as an adult to reread a book that I loved as a child. When I was young I thought how much fun the Peppers had and longed to belong to a large family. As an adult, I realize how poor the family really was and how quickly the children had to grow up. As a child I thought how terrible it was that Polly couldn't read for days on end because of the measles; as an adult I realize the Peppers couldn't even afford to buy books.

First published in 1881, "The Five Little Peppers and How They Grew" is old-fashioned (the doctor even makes house calls!), but still enjoyable. The Peppers are all delightful children, with Joel being the most honest of the bunch as he complains about having to eat the same food every day. Margaret Sidney was a talented author, who could make even inanimate objects, such as the stove, seem alive. The children's adventures may seem simple to today's young readers, who are used to Harry Potter and the like, but it's a refreshing change.

        5 out of 5 stars Great book.......2006-01-29

My Aunty gave me this book for Christmas 45 years ago. It was my very first novel and I loved it. I remember being thoroughly immersed in the story of this book and I read with much delight. It gave me a thirst to continue to read many books throughout my life. I will always be grateful to my Aunty for opening up another world in which to escape in.

I'm not sure if I would want to re-read the book as an adult. I don't want to dull the memory of joy that I felt while reading it as an eight year old.

        Enjoy the book!

        5 out of 5 stars Wonderful.......2005-11-09

The 5 littl peppers and how they grew is one of the best books ever written. It is full of fun and surprises. If you liked books like Little woman and Anne of Green Gables then you will love this story.

5 out of 5 stars One of My Childhood Favorites.......2005-05-31

How much you like this story and its sequels depends on your tolerance of Victorian fiction: the Peppers are very emotional in the Victorian manner, constantly crying or exclaiming in joy. And the youngest girl is sometimes too absolutely cute for words. But the novel itself is an excellent portrait of the average life of a poor family in the late 1900s and it is very much a typical Victorian children's story, complete with the family's rescue at the end. Widow Mary Pepper and her five children eke out a meager existence living on the proceeds of her sewing jobs. But the five children, Ben, Polly, Joel, David and Phronsie, are happy, mostly healthy, and make the most of what they have even if they must eat potatoes, mush and molasses most of the time. Then a chance encounter with a wealthy boy and his dog change their lives.

I would take off one point for this Charming Classics edition by pointing out the cover: why are there six kids? The book is FIVE little Peppers; who's the extra girl in front on the left?

These case studies, which cover a cross-section of these core values, are highly useful for people preparing to become educational leaders and for current practicing administrators.
