5 out of 5 stars Prepare yourself before you read.......2007-01-30

You need to be ready before you read this book. Upon finishing this little dandy I was physically shaking. I can't think of any other book that has made of shake. The manic style and never ending punch in the face flow of this Hubert Selby Jr. masterpiece will stay with you for the rest of your life. If you saw the movie and so decided to not read the book, you are making a mistake. The book is a totally different experience then the movie. Each is a masterpiece in a completely unique way. It's amazing how real this book is. You will feel insane compassion for the lowest of individuals. You will want to reach out to these amazing characters. I don't know how Hubert Selby Jr. does it. His mind must have been a dark but beautiful and loving realm. If you want to be a book this one will make you its own. Read it.

5 out of 5 stars AMAZING.......2006-09-30

by far the best book i have ever read about the troubles about addiction. and the movie was also the best movie i have ever seen. i recommend to do both. this story is so moving, and it introduces drugs, and addiction in a way i have never witnessed. the book is so descriptive, your reading about addiction, and at the same moment your so addicted to the book you cannot put it down for even a split second. the movie is a masterpiece, it is so emotional, you feel the pain, all the emotions the characters go through, you feel like you are there when you watch the movie. its amazing, Requiem for a dream takes four main characters, with the same excruciating addiction to drugs and creates a vivid illustration of what they deal with, words cannot describe how beautiful this story of reality is. and lastly after you watch this movie, you will be madly in love with jared leto.

5 out of 5 stars The Movie.......2006-09-15

I happened to see the movie before I read the book, and I know that there are people who frown upon that. I've seen the movie a ton of times and it's a stunning piece of work, which made me finally decide the time was right to read the book. All I can say is the book is very intense. Had I not seen the movie first though, i'm not so sure i'd have been able to follow the book. Selby is a genius authour, but if you have not seen the movie or read his books, you might get a little lost. There are no quotation marks when people are speaking and that can get a little confusing.

5 out of 5 stars Wow.......2006-07-21

I'm currently on page 233. I'm going to finish this book tonight and edit my review, but I had to type this. I never thought I'd read or see anything that matched the movie, but this has matched it, and may surprass it when I'm done reading it. It offers a lot more insight into the downfall and the reasons for it that the movie does. Excellent piece of writing.
Though, Selby could have used some quotation marks, but after a while, you start recognizing who says what.

5 out of 5 stars Remarkable.......2006-01-27

Though i wouldn't recommend this book to everyone, i mark it as
one of my favorites. I have read most of Selby's work and I am
once again amazed by his talent to keep his readers. If you liked
Requiem for a Dream I would also recommend his other work.

Book Description

A major American author of a stature with William Burroughs and Joseph Heller.?Los Angeles Times<BR><BR>Harry White is a man haunted by a satyr's lust and an obsessive need for sin and retribution. The more Harry succeeds - a good marriage, a good corporate job - the more desperate he becomes, as a life of petty crime leads to fraud and murder and, eventually, to apocalyptic violence.<BR><BR>Author of the controversial cult classic, Last Exit to Brooklyn, Hubert Selby began as a writer of short fiction. He plunges the reader head-first into the densely realized worlds of his protagonists, in which the details of daily life rub shoulders with obsession and madness. Although fundamentally concerned with morality, Selby's own sense of humility prevents him from preaching. He offers instead a passionate empathy with the ordinary dreams and aspirations of his characters, a brilliant ear for the urban vernacular and for the voices of conscience and self-deceit that torment his characters.<BR>"Selby's place is in the front rank of American novelists ... to understand his work is to understand the anguish of America."?The New York Times Book Review

5 out of 5 stars Amazing piece of literature from a totally unique American author.......2007-05-18

This should be required reading for anyone interested in American Literature. Selby's style is so incredibly unique and the way he creates empathy for the wife of this man is an excellent example of minimalism. He says SO much utilizing an economy of words.

Read this book - And also read Selby's "Last Exit to Brooklyn" and "Requiem for a Dream."

HIGHLY HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!!

3 out of 5 stars Very dissapointed.......2007-03-21

This book held my interest fairly well but the ending was cheap and dissapointing. It's prose is now dated and does not hold up to other authors writing in this similar vein.

4 out of 5 stars Interesting book.......2007-03-19

Unlike Last Exit to Brooklyn which is in your face and pounding your gut with every page, this book sneaks up on you. At first you think that someone goofed with the title, since it's just about a man who can go to any club, any dance hall and pick up a chick. For the first third of the book you think that it's just about a lady's man and a jerk.

But at a certain point it shifts, and the title becomes very appropriate as the protagonist suddenly stops channeling his energy into scoring. Since he's no longer engaging in societally normative conquests, you start to slowly understand what you've known all along, ie. that this is a book about a man without a conscience looking for the next big thrill.

After reading this book, you'll understand why people ignore the warning signs for serial killers and child molestors and swear that "he seemed like such a normal man" since really, sociopaths don't always act out and the few times they do, it's always easy to explain away their actions.

2 out of 5 stars Better off reading American Psycho.......2006-07-13

Here's a book about a man who has everything - wealth, good family, but he wants more. The main character has sinful urges that he tries to fight off unsuccessfuly. Sound familiar? Well, this was written before American Psycho, but this book takes forever to get into the good evil stuff and is a lot less descriptive. It is drawn out, but Selby does a good job of painting a picture of this man's mind and making you want to see what this is capable of. But it comes so late in the book and by then you are like, yeah so? Eh, decent read for fans of Ellis masterpiece.

5 out of 5 stars First Book about Sex Addiction.......2006-03-03

This novel is the first that deals with sex addiction and how it can destroy, even a success man's life. The main character tries to get help from a psychiatrist, but is told,"Everybody has sex problems" and is not taken seriously. Nobody can him, and most men are just jealous of how great he is with women. He exposes the "I want to fuch you look" which sexual predator's use to tap into a woman's primal mating instinct. He also confronts the sexual double standard in the first few pages, and that women's needs are not met, especially by their husbands, who all cheat on them. This was written before AIDS, but still deals with the addiction leading to death.
The main character needs a greater rush each time, so he starts to take greater risks, like stealing things he doesn't need, and murdering strangers. When he starts to fantasize about molesting his daughter, he believes he can only protect her, if he kills himself, and ultimately, commits suicide. Hubert Selby, Jr. exposes sex and love addiction, in a real way, that no one else had dared to write yet, and most still haven't.

    Book Description

In the neighborhood of Hell’s Kitchen, 1959, a playground confrontation leaves two white youths bludgeoned to death by a gang of Puerto Rican kids. Sixteen-year-old Salvador Agron, who wore a red-lined satin cape, was charged with the murders, though no traces of blood were found on his dagger. At seventeen, Agron was the youngest person ever to be sentenced to death in the electric chair. After nearly two years in the Death House at Sing Sing Prison, a group of prominent citizens, including Eleanor Roosevelt and the governor of Puerto Rico, convinced Governor Rockefeller to commute Agron’s sentence to one of life imprisonment.
In 1973 Richard Jacoby began a voluminous, twelve-year correspondence with Agron. His Conversations with the Capeman is guaranteed to challenge deeply held notions of crime, punishment, and redemption. Salvador Agron was released from prison in 1979 and died in the Bronx in 1986 at the age of forty-two.
