Book Description
Writing with all the passion of Love Story and power of The Class, Erich Segal sweeps us into the lives of the Harvard Medical School's class of 1962. His stunning novel reveals the making of doctors--what makes them tick, scheme, hurt . . . and love. From the crucible of med school's merciless training through the demanding hours of internship and residency to the triumphs--and sometimes tragedies--beyond, Doctors brings to vivid life the men and women who seek to heal but who must first walk through fire. At the novel's heart is the unforgettable relationship of Barney Livingston and Laura Castellano, childhood friends who separately find unsettling celebrity and unsatisfying love--until their friendship ripens into passion. Yet even their devotion to each other, even their medical gifts may not be enough to save the one life they treasure above all others. Doctors --heartbreaking, witty, inspiring, and utterly, grippingly real--is a vibrant portrait that culminates in a murder, a trial . . . and a miracle.

The doctors.......2007-02-22
It took me quite a while to finish this book. While the writing was very good, the story was very scattered and predictable. At the end of the book, it still felt very incomplete to me.
OK but too predictable.......2006-12-13
Maybe this theme of weaving a story around the lifes of doctors has become too common. This book is one amongst the lot and hence extremely predictable. I thought that there are just too many life stories of characters hence none of the characters were developed in great detail making the book extremely boring at times. Mr.Seagal's writing style is the only thing that keeps you hooked!
one of my fav. books of all time.......2006-09-18
i love erich segals books! the first one i ever read was love story and that had me literally in tears! This one was no exception, i first read this book about 4 years ago and fell in love with it. I saw it on here and decided to get another copy as the old one was coming apart! Definitely a must read for anyone and everyone!! The use of the english language is amazing... all in all a lovely book
Rites of passage.......2004-07-24
Childhood friends and neighbours Laura Castellano and Barney Livingston have a special closeness all the way through their school years and then into their studies at medical school where both of them excell. Barney studies psychiatry and becomes a top man in his field while Laura specialises in early childhood ailments, especially in new babies. This story follows them and their immediate circle of friends through the trials and tribulations of their training years, into their internships and then into the years that they either enter private practice ot take up hospital positions. I found this story to be a real eye-opener as I hadn't thought about the intense mental and physical stresses imposed upon medical students and how they have to be of a particularly strong character to be able to withstand these pressures without cracking.
Real Life.......2004-01-22
As someone that has gone through the unique experience of medical school (and survived) I have to say that although this book is fiction, it is the closest thing to my own experience that I have found. If you want a clear representation of what medical school is like, this is the book. I highly reccomend it for anyone who is interested in going to medical school.

Love story.......2007-03-24
This book the Love Story, by Erich Segal shows many aspects of love. The fight of two people who are faced with the life ahead of them and the love for each other. There love is strained in many ways, but they find there way out of that tunnel.
The story of Jenny and Oliver is a realistic story of two young people that come from two separate worlds and are joined together in the most unlikely of ways. Through out the love story different obstacles get put in their way; rich vs. poor, troubled fathers, young aged love. All these circumstances are real and can happen to anyone and you can live with them, but one obstacle might be the end of this odd relationship of the polar lovers. Can there love hold through it or will there love die?
This book held me captive through the two lovers journey. Although they come from totally separate living styles, you can see there love is strong. The thing I like the best about this book is the way Oliver and Jenny show their love to each other. They are like brother and sister; arguing about their constant differences. The family of these two people are important in this story and some times get in the way of there relationship with one another. Through out the book, I was rooting for their love and wished maybe someday this kind of relationship would happen to me. There love is the most exiting, fun, on-going adventure that I have ever read.
I would think this story would be best read by girls who are looking for a good love story that is not impossible. The love is real and the story can be followed. I would not buy the book I feel like it's a one-time read. It's a one read ending, then the excitement is all gone. I enjoyed this book immensely and I'm sure you will too.
If you like this story there is a sequel to this book that continues the love life of the characters.
Love Means Never Having to Say You're Sorry.......2007-03-24
"Love means never having to say you're sorry" (187). Love Story by Erich Segal was a very emotional book with an unsuspected twist. He conveyed the relationship between the two main characters very well and made them very straightforward with their feelings and thoughts.
This book was about two college students who met and immediately fell in love. They have to go through many emotional struggles, that most young couples go through. Oliver Barrett IV was a jock, and Jenny Calvilleri was studying music. They came from two different worlds; Oliver came from a rich family and Jenny came from a poor family. They were complete opposites in almost everything. Jenny and Oliver met in the school library and from that point on Jenny was straightforward with him and always said what was on her mind. They were always making wisecrack comments to each other, but they were never serious with what they were saying when they insulted each other. Their comments to each other were very comical and will always make you crack a smile. "This is not the official goddamn threshold. Upstairs you turkey" (113). For most of the story they were in college, but later in the book they get married and move in together. They had to go through the struggles of not having much money and trying to get by with what they had. Oliver had a bad relationship with his father so they could not ask for money. Oliver absolutely hated his father and refused to talk to him and visit him. Jenny and Oliver both had to work to earn enough money for themselves. Oliver was going to grad school so that he could become a lawyer, and they had to earn extra money to pay for that. He got a degree and a lot of job good job offers at different law firm. His favorite was the job offer he got from a New York law firm. He took that one and they moved there and he started earning plenty of money for them. Now that they had settled in and had an in come, they wanted to start a family. Oliver and Jenny wanted to have a child very badly, but they were having problems. They went to the doctor and that was when the twists started to happen. If you want to know what happened in the end you will have to read the book.
I chose to read this book for a choice novel for English. I loved this book. I would read it again even though I know what happens in the end. I recommend this book for a good short read. I don't think a guy would like this, but it is perfect for a female that is looking for an emotional filled book. With the wisecrack comments that Jenny makes and the emotional moments you will never get bored with this book.

A love story: ).......2007-03-24
The book Love Story is a short, but sweet story about two Ivy League scholars that fall in love. This book isn't your typical love story with a prince and a happy ending; there is a small twist to it. This book leaves you feeling excited about a serious relationship, or even marriage because of the light friendship that the couple portrays. Their relationship brings a happy and humorous mood to the story.
The characters Jennifer Cavilleri, and Oliver Barrett IV are very different people and come from very different backgrounds, but their chemistry and their conversations will bring a smile to your face. They meet and fall in love in college at a library, and the book tells about how their love blossoms and matures as they continue dating. They go through many hardships, and just when they feel that they have reached a point where their hard work has paid off, tragedy strikes. There are some small obstacles the two must over come in the book such as the main character, Oliver Barrett IV, and his father do not get along. For instance, Oliver's father does not approve of him getting married which leads to another conflict; Oliver's father abandons his son, and Oliver is in somewhat of a money crisis.
The way the author has described the smallest things is excellent. The author does a wonderful job with the dialogue in the story, making it very realistic. Not only is it very realistic, but the arguments, the patience, the love, and everything is very straight forward. Also, the way the author, Erich Segal, describes their love makes you want to read more and more. In the first few sentences of the book, he begins with "What can you say about a twenty-five-year-old girl who died? That she was beautiful. And brilliant. That she loved Mozart and Bach. And the Beatles. And me." (1)This book is the ideal one for all people in love, or who wish to experience it. The theme of this story is really touching and it comes up more than once in the book. It is a line that the witty and clever character, Jenny, said "Love means never having to say you're sorry." (187) This book will probably make you feel many emotions; happy, sad, and maybe even grateful.
It is no surprise that the two main characters are Ivy League scholars, since the author, Erich Segal attended Harvard University. He taught at Harvard before moving to Yale in 1964, then taught at Princeton, and concluded his American teaching career with a second stint at Yale. In 1970, when his first novel, Love Story, appeared it was an immediate sensation, selling twenty million copies in thirty-three languages. There is a conclusion to Love Story called Oliver's story that continues to tell about his life.
I decided to read this book after my friend recommended it for a choice novel project in school, and it was a wonderful book to work with. It was also a very quick, yet interesting read. I would give it a 4. 5 out of 5 and I would definitely read it again.

Book Description
Plautus was the single greatest influence on Western comedy. Shakespeare's Comedy of Errors and Moliere's The Miser are two subsequent classics directly based on Plautine originals. Plautus himself borrowed from the Greeks, but his jokes, rapid dialogue, bawdy humour, and irreverent characterizations are the original work of an undisputed genius. The comedies printed here show him at his best, and professor Segal's translations keep their fast, rollicking pace intact, making these the most readable and actable versions available. His introduction considers Plautus' place in ancient comedy, examines his continuing influence, and celebrates his power to entertain.

Interesting..........2003-06-27
This book makes for a good read, though it is not all that funny in today's context. I would recommend this book if you are interested in gaining a deeper understanding the minds of ancient peoples.
Four Comedies..........2000-04-24
a worthwhile read for anyone. but look into it if your taking a college course on roman comedy especially though. it's not a quick read but a good one. the "brothers Menaechmus" stays the truest to roman comedy forn with the five staple characters all in there. not for those wiht short attention spans.

Book Description
They met as children, innocents from two different worlds. And from that moment their lives were fated to be forever entwined. Timothy : Abandoned at birth, he finds a home--and a dazzling career--within the Catholic Church. But the vows he takes cannot protect him from one soul-igniting passion. Daniel : The scholarly son of a great rabbi, he is destined to follow in his father's footsteps. And destined to break his father's heart. Deborah : She was raised to be docile and dutiful--the perfect rabbi's wife--but love will lead her to rebellion. And into world's the patriarch would never dare imagine.
Reaching across more than a quarter of a century, from the tough streets of Brooklyn to ultramodern Brasilia to an Israeli kibbutz, and radiating the splendor of two holy cities, Rome and Jerusalem, here is Erich Segal's most provocative and ambitious novel to date--the unforgettable story of three extraordinary lives...and one forbidden love.
Customer Reviews:
Baseless relationships & ridiculous ideas of Catholicism.......2006-03-21
When I first read this book 13 years ago, I thought it was great. Re-reading it with a more mature and educated mind, I found it insulting.
First, the eternal burning love between Deborah and Tim has almost no basis for the power it has over them. A few late-night conversations and their love spans time and distance? Give me a break.
Then, there's the Catholicism. I can't speak to the authenticity of the Judaism in the book, but as a Catholic journalist, I can speak with some authority on that.
The idea that a man can go from priest to monsignor to ARCHBISHOP in 15 years, and before age 40 is insulting. Currently, the youngest U.S. bishop was ordained at age 47. Pope John II was ordained a bishop at age 38.
Far-fetched ideas aside, Segal's writing is definitely easy to read, until he tries to show us how well he researched this book, with his overly frequent italicized used of Yiddish, Hebrew and Latin.
Looking for an intelligent, realistic love story? Stay away from Segal's novels and check out Audrey Niffeneger's "The Time-Traveler's Wife"; Sue Monk Kidd's "The Secret Life of Bees"; or Anita Shreve's "All He Ever Wanted."
A heart-wrenching love story.......2005-12-30
This is my favorite book of all time. I have read other books by Segal but this is the novel that stands out. The story of interfaith relationships is very poignant in today's world. The expectations of one's family, the relationship to one's relgious community, these situations are relatable which makes this story touch home. This novel stuck a chord within me and it is one of few books I can read over and over (and cry every time!).
A good read.......2005-09-24
I'll be howled down by many of the other reviewers, but I found Acts of Faith to be an interesting read, touching heavily on both the Jewish and Catholic religions. Daniel is the only son of one of the most highly regarded Rabbis in the US, a direct descendant of a line of Orthodox Jews, and the expected next leader of this congregation. Timothy is a typical New York street urchin, bastard son of a mentally ill woman and is being raised by his aunt and uncle. Timothy is employed by the Rabbi to perform the Sabbath eve tasks of switching off the lights etc. which cannot be performed by the Jewish faithful, and so meets Daniel and his sister Deborah, a devout and pious girl who is destined to become the young wife of a Rabbi. The children grow up with their lives intermittently intertwining, to form the nucleus of a somewhat predictable, but nonetheless enjoyable, story of conflicting religions, love and much soul searching in young people who are torn between various religious traditions and the very human aspects of love and family.
Not Very Original But Rather Enjoyable.......2004-09-19
A few weeks ago I was looking for an old book and stumbled across ACTS OF FAITH. It was a book that I read years ago, but perused it again. Even those who love the book will have to admit it is a canned, predictable story. Timothy is a stereotypical Irish potential urchin who later becomes a priest. As a youth he comes into contact with a Hassidic Jewish family. He befriends the son who is about the same age and falls in love with a young woman in the family named Deborah. Tim and Deborah are separated, meet one day and engage in a passionate moment that surprise: results in a pregnancy. Many years later, Tim meets his love child. Meanwhile Daniel, who is expected to follow in his father's footsteps as a Rabbi, but discovers he has to do so in his own way. Very Neil Diamond JAZZ SINGER, if you ask me.
The first time I read the book, I could not put it down. Yes I knew what would happen. What else could be expected from the writer who penned LOVE STORY which contains what may be the gaggiest line in the English language "love means never having to say you're sorry?" Well, just as LOVE STORY had something that compelled readers and moviegoers alike, ACTS OF FAITH does too. Segal knows his Catholicism and his male lead character of Timothy Hogan is not cliché. Deborah, the female lead character has her complexities as well. The characters are so compelling they move the plot, and somehow it all becomes believable. The characters do struggle with life, love, family conflict and faith, issues we all deal with in one way or another.
This is the perfect "waste time" book. It is just taxing enough for a vacation. It is easy enough to read on a hectic subway train or bus while commuting to work. It can make a sick day from work a bit easier to take. It's just an enjoyable read-nothing all that sophisticated but certainly not a waste of time.
Predictable.......2004-01-29
All of the characters appear to be stereotypical, and the plot is predictable, after the first 50 pages. It was a good read never the less, but not a very good novel.

Customer Reviews:
Our poor Oliver.......2007-05-28
I read Love Story over and over and over as a young teen. I still read it often today. For years though I sat with my mother's original version- lime green hardback- never knowing there was a sequel until I stumbled on it at a flea market with my mom and aunt. They were shocked to find that I did not know about it- knowing how much I loved "Love Story". My aunt prepared me for disappointment....but she was wrong.
Oliver's story is a gut-wrenching story about the pain and the empty life we often lead after a loved one leaves us too soon. Oliver's Story has no pretense of a happily ever after, and does not leave you with the rain clouds departing. Oliver lives the life we all might lead, absent the glowing Hollywood ending. He struggles a lot in this book, and although you are tragically sad for him, you know the ending is right.
Good Book.......2006-11-10
Its a nice book, cant give it 5 because its a sequel to the greatest book ever written... Love Story!!
Oliver's Story.......2003-06-22
I bought this book because I am a big fan of the Love Story. However, I was quite disappointed after reading the book. Oliver started another relationship with Marcie two years after Jenny¡¦s death. That was too soon. If you ever truly love someone in your life, two years only means 5 minutes. I was glad to see Oliver and his father made peace with each other. The last few pages of the book make it well worth reading. You can skip some paragraphs in some chapters, but you have to read it over and over again in the last few pages. It were very well written.
Another things draw my interest to read this book were the economic development and comparative advantages between the US and Asia thirty years ago. (I majored International Econ in grad school.) The sweatshop conditions are common in developing economies. A lot of labor-intensive industries were forced to shut down in the last two decades and moved to Asia. This book was more focus on one side of the story. A lot of jobs moved to Asia because the US was moving from one advantage to another advantage. From labor-intensive products to technology-driven merchandises. When you look at those hi-tech companies in Silicon Valley, you know what I mean.
The major reason makes me interest in this book was my Dad. The movie "Love Story"
was shot before I was born. When I was a little girl, I saw Dad watching this movie every time when it was shown on TV. My Dad is kinds of the action movie type. I was surprised why he loved watching this movie. So, when I was in the video store one day, I decided to rent the DVD to see what made my Dad to watch a love drama. Just like my father. I am totally devoted to the movie. I bought both "Oliver's Story" and "Love Story" and finished reading in one afternoon. For me, I like the Love Story more than Oliver's Story. The 3/4 part of the Love Story was a pleasant story. Both of them loved each other very much and would like to sacrifice for each other. For Oliver's story, it's all sad and how Oliver couldn't forget Jenny.
Jut a bit better than Love Story.......2002-12-18
I liked this just a little better than "Love Story" because I thought the characters, especially Oliver, were more fleshed out. When Oliver starts to see a psychiatrist to help him deal with Jenny's death, we're able to get into his head and understand his motiviations much better. I found the ending quite sad and maybe a bit overly pessimistic, but it felt real nonetheless.
More than just about Oliver and Jenny.......2000-11-23
I loved this book. I was happy to read about he tried to move on and give Marcie a chance... But, I loved the idea that no one could and would ever replace Jenny.
However, in addition to Oliver's and Jenny's love, an important part of this book was the relationship between Oliver and his father, the realization of his love and respect for him, which Jenny had also wanted. That enriched the ending somehow, and gave some kind of purpose to Oliver's life for the future...

Not bad..........2006-08-25
But it was better when it was originally written as "The Last Convertible" by Anton Myrer.

A "must-read" for all.......2005-09-02
"The Class" is a great book and Erich segal has succeded in capturing the mind of the reader. As we read through the book it takes us back to our university days. I recommend this book to every person who feels proud of his college.
This class fails.......2005-06-29
Skip this over indulgent pile and read "Doctors" by Segal instead, better character development, better subject matter and better results.
The best !!.......2000-09-17
This is the best book I have ever read and the only book I have read more than once.
A very powerful novel that completely touches the reader where it really feels !! No words can say anything about the book. You got to read it.

Book Description
This book presents seven fresh and original views of Caesar Augustus, as the authors of the papers collected here consider the image which he presented of himself, how poets and historians reacted to him, the nature of his rule, and the representation of the newly established monarch among his subjects in the provinces. The contributors are well-known historians and scholars: Zvi Yavetz (Tel Aviv), Fergus Millar (Oxford), Claude Nicolet (Paris), Emilio Gabba (Pavia), Werner Eck (Cologne), Glen Bowersock (Princeton), and Jasper Griffin (Oxford). These papers were first given at a colloquium held at Wolfson College, Oxford, to celebrate the eightieth birthday of the late Sir Ronald Syme, author of The Roman Revolution (OUP 1939) and other seminal works. A substantial amount of documentation has been added in the notes, but the main texts retain the form in which they were given as lectures, and with it a freshness and immediacy in approaching a central moment in history from a number of new angles.

Book Description
"Mr. Segal has performed the by no means trifling task of making [Plautus's] achievement credible and understandable."--Times Literary Supplement. "It is refreshing to find Plautus examined for what he undeniably was--a theatrical phenomenon."--Classical World. "We certainly need in English a book devoted to Plautus alone and here we have it."--Phoenix. "Many readers will do as I have done: read Roman Laughter with enjoyment and profit."--Classical Philology. "Of all the Greek and Roman playwrights," Erich Segal writes, "Titus Maccius Plautus is the least admired and the most imitated." In Roman Laughter, the first book-length study of Plautus, Segal argues that this neglected writer, often denounced by scholars for such crimes as "barbarous clownery," merits our serious attention precisely because he was the most successful poet of the ancient world. He analyzes the reasons behind this success, placing the author in his social and historical context and observing that Plautus's wildly comedic flouting of Roman law and custom had a cathartic effect upon a people bound by rule in every aspect of their lives. This expanded edition contains a new preface that reconsiders the work of Plautus in light of recent scholarship and also contains essays on the Amphitryon and the Captivi.

- Roman Laughter: The Comedy of Plautus
ASIN: 0198721935 |
Book Description
This book documents the origins of modern comedy by examining the evolution of 'New Comedy', the Greek genre of which the works of Menander are the only surviving example. Earlier authors like Aristophanes wrote in a completely different style: raucous, bawdy, fantastical, and vaudeville. Menander (of whom Plutarch said, 'what other reason would a cultivated man have to go to the theatre?') and his contemporaries presented civilised, urban comedies based on the themes of quiet domestic dramas. The Romans adapted these comedies giving them their own farcical spin. Though they based their comedies on Greek originals, Plautus referred to them as 'barbarian versions'; they were mockeries on Hellenistic themes. Terence, by contrast, is more like Menander, whose plays he followed with some fidelity, but without success. The Romans did not crave realism, they wanted a good laugh and Terence- though he could have done so- refused to pander to their vulgar tastes. Yet he got his revenge. It was Terence who provided the touchstone boy-meets-girl plots which still appear today in various guises on the silver screen. An authoritative Introduction sets the papers, which are by leading experts in their field, in context and explores connections between them thus examining the legacy for modern comedies. All Latin and Greek is translated.
