David Sedaris became a star autobiographer on public radio, onstage in New York, and on bestseller lists, mostly on the strength of "SantaLand Diaries," a scathing, hilarious account of his stint as a Christmas elf at Macy's. (It's in two separate collections, both worth owning, Barrel Fever and the Christmas-themed Holidays on Ice.) Sedaris's caustic gift has not deserted him in his fourth book, which mines poignant comedy from his peculiar childhood in North Carolina, his bizarre career path, and his move with his lover to France. Though his anarchic inclination to digress is his glory, Sedaris does have a theme in these reminiscences: the inability of humans to communicate. The title is his rendition in transliterated English of how he and his fellow students of French in Paris mangle the Gallic language. In the essay "Jesus Shaves," he and his classmates from many nations try to convey the concept of Easter to a Moroccan Muslim. "It is a party for the little boy of God," says one. "Then he be die one day on two... morsels of... lumber," says another. Sedaris muses on the disputes between his Protestant mother and his father, a Greek Orthodox guy whose Easter fell on a different day. Other essays explicate his deep kinship with his eccentric mom and absurd alienation from his IBM-exec dad: "To me, the greatest mystery of science continues to be that a man could father six children who shared absolutely none of his interests."

Every glimpse we get of Sedaris's family and acquaintances delivers laughs and insights. He thwarts his North Carolina speech therapist ("for whom the word pen had two syllables") by cleverly avoiding all words with s sounds, which reveal the lisp she sought to correct. His midget guitar teacher, Mister Mancini, is unaware that Sedaris doesn't share his obsession with breasts, and sings "Light My Fire" all wrong--"as if he were a Webelo scout demanding a match." As a remarkably unqualified teacher at the Art Institute of Chicago, Sedaris had his class watch soap operas and assign "guessays" on what would happen in the next day's episode.

It all adds up to the most distinctively skewed autobiography since Spalding Gray's Swimming to Cambodia. The only possible reason not to read this book is if you'd rather hear the author's intrinsically funny speaking voice narrating his story. In that case, get Me Talk Pretty One Day on audio. --Tim Appelo

Amazon.com Audiobook Review

"It's a pretty grim world when I can't even feel superior to a toddler." Welcome to the curious mind of David Sedaris, where dogs outrank children, guitars have breasts, and French toddlers unmask the inadequacies of the American male. Sedaris inhabits this world as a misanthrope chronicling all things petty and small. In Me Talk Pretty One Day Sedaris is as determined as ever to be nobody's hero--he never triumphs, he never conquers--and somehow, with each failure, he inadvertently becomes everybody's favorite underdog. The world's most eloquent malcontent, Sedaris has turned self-deprecation into a celebrated art form--one that is perhaps best experienced in audio. "Go Carolina," his account of "the first battle of my war against the letter s" is particularly poignant. Unable to disguise the lisp that has become his trademark, Sedaris highlights (to hilarious extent) the frustration of reading "childish s-laden texts recounting the adventures of seals or settlers named Sassy or Samuel." Including 23 of the book version's 28 stories, two live performances complete with involuntary laughter, and an uncannily accurate Billie Holiday impersonation, the audio is more than a companion to the text; it stands alone as a performance piece--only without the sock monkeys. (Running time: 5 hours, 4 cassettes) --Daphne Durham

Book Description

A new collection from David Sedaris is cause for jubilation. His recent move to Paris has inspired hilarious pieces, including Me Talk Pretty One Day, about his attempts to learn French. His family is another inspiration. You Cant Kill the Rooster is a portrait of his brother who talks incessant hip-hop slang to his bewildered father. And no one hones a finer fury in response to such modern annoyances as restaurant meals presented in ludicrous towers and cashiers with 6-inch fingernails. Compared by The New Yorker to Twain and Hawthorne, Sedaris has become one of our best-loved authors.

5 out of 5 stars I LOVE this book!.......2007-06-12

Me Talk Pretty One Day is a riot! It's taking me forever to read it because I've been laughing so hard that I'm crying and can't focus my eyes on the page! If you don't like drawing attention to yourself, DON'T READ THIS IN A PUBLIC PLACE! LOL!

4 out of 5 stars You'll laugh out loud.......2007-06-07

So be careful if you are reading it in public! This is the first book by Sedaris that I've read, and now I want to read them all. The series of short stories made me laugh so hard I had to put it down and take a moment. I most loved the ones about his family, sister Amy and brother aka "The Rooster." Sedaris sometimes paints himself in the book to be such an unintelligent outsider/slacker, it's almost hard to believe he crafted such a well-written book.

5 out of 5 stars The Best of Sedaris.......2007-05-27

Sedaris's work is original, humorous and poignant. This is the best of his writing and a great place for a reader to begin his love affair with Sedaris.

5 out of 5 stars Laugh out Loud FUNNY!.......2007-05-25

I bought this book several years ago on a whim. I was about to board an international flight and was at the airport bookstore with limited time. The title looked interesting, so I tried it. I have since read it two more times. It makes me laugh out loud every time! The Rooster story made me double over with laughter. I can hear his brother's voice in my head. My husband kept looking at me during our flight like I was nuts. I also enjoyed the language breakdowns in his french class. Loved it!

5 out of 5 stars If you need to laugh, buy this book!.......2007-05-18

Hearing David Sedaris sing television jingle lyrics in the voice of Billy Holiday is priceless, and sheer satirical genius. Sedaris' fourth book of short stories will once again make you laugh out loud with glee. Many of the stories center around the theme of "speech". Sedaris swears off the letter S as a child tortured by his Southern speech therapist. He struggles with the inability to speak as an adult when he moves to France and attends language school. His self deprecating humor is a delight and Sedaris continues to find humor and poignancy amidst his quirky family and the banal moments of life. If you have never heard Sedaris read his own writing than you are missing a whole other dimension to his humor. Check out the audiobook, you won't be disappointed!

Star radio storyteller David Sedaris presents his collected works in one audio box set. The longest (at five hours) is his latest, Me Talk Pretty One Day, which contains two live performances from San Francisco. Welcome to a world where dogs outrank children, guitars have breasts, and Sedaris's fellow language-class students try to convey the concept of Easter to a Moroccan Muslim in their fledgling French (translated into English): "It is a party for the little boy of God," says one. "Then he be die one day on two ... morsels of ... lumber," says another. Sedaris is hilarious, and his Billie Holiday impression is amazing.

The three-hour, Christmas-themed Holidays on Ice is the gem of the collection. It has his greatest hit, "SantaLand Diaries," a chronicle of his stint as an elf at Macy's, covering everything from the preliminary group lectures ("You are not a dancer. If you were a real dancer you wouldn't be here. You're an elf and you're going to wear panties like an elf.") to the perils of inter-elf flirtation. Other hits feature the crazed newsletter "Season's Greetings to Our Friends and Family!!!" and the prostitute coworker his sister brought home one Yuletide, giving "the phrase 'ho, ho, ho' whole different meaning." Barrel Fever contains the fulminatingly funny "Glen's Homophobia Newsletter, Vol. 3, No. 2" and "Parade," discussing the narrator's perhaps not fully plausible gay relationships with Bruce Springsteen, Mike Tyson, and Peter Jennings. Naked describes his adventures in a nudist colony, but his family tales are, as ever, nonpareil.

3 out of 5 stars Could use more "live" tracks.......2007-04-04

David Sedaris is truly one of my favorite authors and I love to read his work. However, if you have never HEARD Mr. Sedaris' voice before, it takes some getting used to. At first it is almost painful to listen to because his voice is so... so... um... he sounds like Woody Allen doing a Woody Allen imitation.

Nevertheless, his live tracks are hilarious - a little less "in the microphone," if you will. If I could read and drive at the same time on my long business trips, that would be my preferred method of receiving David Sedaris' material.

4 out of 5 stars Hilarious.......2006-08-29

I would've given it 5 stars but it should get about 4.8 stars.

This is a brilliant idea. For people like me who get too easily distracted to read for entertainment, hearing it being read for you is so much better.

And the material David has is great. I first learned about David by way of his sister's work on Strangers with Candy, and got a book after I saw David on Letterman. And then I remembered I get too distracted when reading for fun, which has been a life long deal. So I got this on audio and it is a blast.

3 out of 5 stars Lost in Translation..........2006-06-12

While it's great hearing David Sedaris' voice, it ultimately takes away from the experience. Sedaris' books are amazingly funny and dark; very witty stuff. They are best enjoyed in print form though, when the reader can inject their own tone and inflection into the words of the printed page. Hearing David Sedaris' interpretation somewhat lessens this experience.

However, if you're the kind of person who wants to enjoy a good book without the "hassle" of actually mustering the discipline to sit down and read (you people know who you are) then go ahead. But for all those half way intelligent humans who recognize the value of taking the time to sit down and turn the pages, just go buy his books and skip the audio versions. It's cheaper anyways.

In the end, while good, it's not worth it. Just buy the books.

5 out of 5 stars How Can You Beat This Price?.......2006-04-17

As a big fan of David Sedaris, I have loved listening to him read his stories on NPR even more than I have enjoyed reading his books. While I had wanted to purchase some of the audiobooks, they always seemed so pricy.

When I saw this box set on Amazon, I immediately added it to my wishlist. The quantity of stories and books in the set is amazing! I received it for Christmas and have been listening to it ever since.

My only qualm is that all of the packaging is cardboard, as opposed to traditional plastic jewel cases, so the box holding all the CD's has suffered some wear and tear over the months, but nothing too significant.

5 out of 5 stars WOW.......2006-04-03

David Sedaris can take the simplest thing or situation most common, and make it relevant, important and funny as hell. This is why we, as humans, have language.

Amazon.com Audio Review

It just isn't fair: most of us would be lucky to be able to express ourselves in writing half as well as David Sedaris does in his new book, Dress Your Family in Corduroy and Denim. But on top of his skills with the written word, the author also has substantial gifts as a performer, and he proves this on the audio version of the book. In his essay The Change in Me,Sedaris remembers that his mother was good at imitating people, and it's clear that he takes after her. Whether he's doing impressions of high-voiced brother Paul, or recalling times when he and his sisters tried to win good karma by speaking and acting like well-behaved, fairytale children, Sedaris's nuanced performance hits the right note on both the opening, comedic stories, and the more poignant essays that tend to come later in the reading. In fact, for those who have already read some of the best stories in other publications including The New Yorker, the CD or cassette version of this collection is probably the best bet for furthering your appreciation of the material.

Sedaris's career is closely linked with two things: audio (he was discovered by NPR's Ira Glass), and the personal lives of himself and his family. In Dress Your Family in Corduroy and Denim, he describes fights with his boyfriend, and his sister-in-law's difficult pregnancy. When sister Lisa complains about the stories involving the family, he writes about that, too. Sedaris's latest provides more evidence that he is a great humorist, memoirist and raconteur, and readers are lucky to have the opportunity to know him so well. Perhaps they are luckier still not to know him personally. --Leah Weathersby

3 out of 5 stars Moderately amusing.......2007-06-25

This is the first book I've read by the author after many recommendations from people. The book was so-so...the only time I laughed out loud was in the "Girl Next Door" when he finds out the little girl's hick grandmother is nicknamed "Rascal." That was brilliant. The reason the stories lacked a lot of humor for me is because they were so banal and commonplace. This guy does not have a unique family--everyone I know has a family just as crazy, but in different ways. My family is twice as nutty as his, though nobody drinks. I just didn't feel like this guy had any experiences worth writing about. As another reviewer pointed out, the book read like some random dude's mildly amusing, though ultimately pointless, blog.

4 out of 5 stars Dress Your Family in Corduroy and Denim.......2007-06-13

"...Still I adopted my mother's attitude, as it allowed me to pretend that not making friends was a conscious choice." So ends the first paragraph of David Sedaris' star achievement, Dress Your Family in Corduroy and Denim.

Sedaris' writing is not linear, though while his books have no beginning, middle, or end; all of his essays revolve around a central point. Throughout Dress Your Family in Corduroy and Denim, we see Sedaris really look at himself for the first time, realize that money is material, and find that even those who should love you most can turn on you for no appropriate reason. There is no specific setting in this book but Sedaris' life; the main characters are the people he encounters; and the obstacles that he faces are those anyone can relate to. Sedaris is able to connect with the average man because he is the average man, making this book that much more hilarious.

Being told to pick your favorite moment out of Dress Your Family in Corduroy and Denim is like being told that although you have a million dollars; you can only buy one thing, so you better make it count. There are just so many things to choose from- Sedaris and his siblings trying to get their youngest sister run over so that their mother will let them in out of the snow; a little misunderstanding between maid services; and even the birth of The Rooster. Despite all of the humor, I would have to choose a slightly more serious moment as the one that affected me most. When Sedaris left college he went back home to live with his parents. After a few months of bumming around and doing drugs, Sedaris' father called him into his office, and kicked him out. When his mother dropped him off at his new apartment, she began to cry. As Sedaris states, "I wouldn't know it until a few months later, but my father kicked me out of the house not because I was a bum, but because I was gay."

It was difficult to pull a theme from this book, and for a while I wasn't so sure that there was one. A few weeks after I finished the book, I began to think about how people always try to cover up anything ugly, like Sedaris' father kicking him out of the house; and there I had my theme. In the last essay included in this book, "Nuit of the Living Dead," Sedaris finds a mouse in his house late at night, and proceeds to drown it in a bucket. Partway through killing it he is interrupted by a man looking for directions. He is, of course, worried about what the man will think of him. However, when the man gets up to the house and looks into the bucket, he does not seem shocked or surprised. After he left with directions, Sedaris walked back out onto his porch and looked at the lifeless animal in the water. As he stared at the floating body he felt the darkness around him, and later wrote: "When the sun came up I would bury my dead and fill the empty bucket with hydrangeas, a bit of life and color, so perfect for the table. So pleasing to the eye." As usual, something ugly was being replaced with something beautiful, and once again the illusion that everything was okay was being put up for show.

This book will make anyone who reads it laugh, yet due to the hilarity of Me Talk Pretty One Day, I did not find this to be his best humorous achievement. I did however find it to be the one that affected me the most. I have always believed that a book that means something to the author is better than a book that is meant to entertain, which is why I believe that Dress Your Family in Corduroy and Denim is a must-read.

4 out of 5 stars More From The Talented Storyteller Who Is David Sedaris.......2007-06-04

David Sedaris is a talented master of the short (autobiographical) story. This collection of pieces spans various eras of his life, but I found the pieces dealing with his childhood (which were the bulk of the pieces) the most enjoyable. These are the pieces where the Sedaris family comes full-fore.

One thing to note about Sedaris is that he has been accused of his family (and independently documented by a piece in "The New Republic") of some exaggeration of events that has occurred. So I wouldn't take the events here as gospel truth.

Still, even with a bit of fiction thrown in, these are wonderful essays and very enjoyable.

4 out of 5 stars Comedic, yet Poignant!.......2007-05-27

I thoroughly enjoyed reading these comedic essays based on the author's own life! They are not only witty, but poignant! Sedaris is a gifted and talented writer, who truly adds a refreshing view/perspective on daily life that might otherwise seem mundane.

4 out of 5 stars Sedaris strikes the funny bone!.......2007-05-21

A naked Barbie Doll adorns the cover, yet this autobiographical bestseller is about a boy growing up with a Greek background and a mismatched family, all while dealing with his homosexuality. The chapters express only a few memorable stories, yet have distinctively affected Sedaris' life. The stories include embarrassing moments where his father confronts the most popular guy's dad about a rock throwing incident, and also anecdotes of his redneck brother on a quest to buy all the baby paraphernalia he can buy, even before his wife goes to the doctor. The seasons of Sedaris' life are all accounted for, from childhood to drug addiction to life in France with his boyfriend. Overall, Sedaris is able to capture the reader with undeniable wit and true to life tales.
In the very first chapter of the book, Sedaris introduces the reader to his humor with a bit of childhood innocence. A family who "doesn't believe in T.V." trick-or-treats at the Sedaris Household on the day after Halloween. Sedaris' mother insists that the children produce pieces of their own "earned" candy. When much time elapses, his mother enters his room and begins to snatch Necco wafers, ""Not those," [he] pleaded, but rather than words, [his] mouth expelled chocolate, which fell onto the sleeve of her sweater. She shook her arm, and the mound of chocolate dropped like a horrible turd upon [his] bedspread". The crude humor and inclusion of "turd" appeals to many readers, mainly because it comes from a real child's thoughts. This scene is the first hint of madness in Sedaris' life. The story, including the humor, makes him contemplate the family who doesn't watch T.V. for months, and in turn learns that television is a way to distract himself from his own issues and problems with his family.
The humor continues throughout the book in the seventeenth chapter when his crazed sister finds a turkey in the trash, then cooks and eats it. Sedaris must learn to balance his high-class integrity with his connection to his sister who eats out of the trash. The reader learns about what type of man he has become through his sister's sarcastic comment, "Listen to you. If it didn't come from Balduccci's, if it wasn't raised on polenta and wild baby acorns, it has to be dangerous". The reader understands how his obsessive compulsive personality has affected his relationships with his family. He also grows more and more into the homosexual stereotype. The obvious comedy found in eating a turkey that has been thrown away for a reason is a signature of Sedaris. While his book is nonfiction, the bluntness of his writing makes for more humor in these types of situations.
In every chapter, Sedaris takes real life accounts and formulates them into a good read. Laughing out loud while reading each chapter is quite common and this bestseller is very promising. It can change a bad mood into a good one. Sedaris really will strike your funny bone.

Holidays on Ice is a collection of three previously published stories matched with three newer ones, all, of course, on a Christmas theme. David Sedaris's darkly playful humor is another common thread through the book, worming its way through "Seasons Greetings to Our Friends and Family!!!" a chipper suburban Christmas letter that spirals dizzily out of control, and "Front Row Center with Thaddeus Bristol," a vicious theatrical review of children's Christmas pageants. As always, Sedaris's best work is his sharply observed nonfiction, notably in "Dinah, the Christmas Whore," the tale of a memorable Christmas during which the young Sedaris learns to see his family in a new light. Worth the price of the book alone is the hilarious "SantaLand Diaries," Sedaris's chronicle of his time working as an elf at Macy's, covering everything from the preliminary group lectures ("You are not a dancer. If you were a real dancer you wouldn't be here. You're an elf and you're going to wear panties like an elf.") to the perils of inter-elf flirtation. Along the way, he paints a funny and sad portrait of the way the countless parents who pass through SantaLand are too busy creating an Experience to really pay attention to their children. In a sly way, it carries a holiday message all its own. Read it aloud to the adults after the kids have gone to bed. --Ali Davis

Book Description

HOLIDAYS ON ICE collects six of David Sedaris' most profound Christmas stories into one slender volume perfect for use as a last-minute coaster or ice scraper. This drinking man's companion can be enjoyed by the warmth of a raging fire, the glow of a brilliantly decorated tree, or even the backseat of a van or police car. It should be read with your eyes, felt with your heart, and heard only when spoken to. It should, in short, behave much like a book. And, oh, what a book it is!

I enjoyed the opportunity to read David Sedaris' stories, some of which I had read elsewhere. It is a good format to launch someone on 'the good ship Sedaris' but for those who have been initiated, it was all too brief in the newness arena. It rattles along very comfortably, like an old Chevrolet, but we do like the smell of a new car every so often, don't we?

Another collections of hilarious short stories by David Sedaris. All of them were hysterical. I loaned this book to many a friend and have yet to find an intelligent person who does not get this author! He is so well crafted at the art of writing, I laughed so hard I cried reading it!

This was my first David Sedaris book. While some of it was not as funny as i expected, Season's greetings was worth the price of the book for me. I thought it was hilarious. I did laugh out loud. I would recommend this book, especially around the holidays. I will read more of this author.

Hip radio comedy fans and theater folks who belong to the cult of Obie-winning playwright/performer David Sedaris must kill to get this book. These would be fans of the scaldingly snide Sedaris's hilariously described personal misadventures like The Santaland Diaries (a monologue about his work as an elf to a department store Santa) seen off-Broadway in 1997. In a series of similarly textured essays, Sedaris takes us along on his catastrophic detours through a nudist colony, a fruit-packing plant, his own childhood, and a dozen more of the world's little purgatories.

Book Description

Naked is a riotous compilation of stories performed by David and Amy Sedaris. Publishers Weekly praised this program's "smashing use of the audio as a unique entertainment medium" and called the performances "highly likeable and spirited throughout." They also named it one of "the best of the best" tapes of the year, and deemed it worthy of "multiple listens."

5 out of 5 stars David Sedaris Saved Me From a Car Crash.......2007-06-20

So I was driving from my grandparents' house in southern Florida back to my home in Georgia, having just learned that the tumor in my grandmother's now-mastectomized breast had metastasized to her lymph nodes. I thought I was holding up okay, until out of nowhere I started sobbing. Which, when you're going 70mph while surrounding by 18-wheelers, is both embarrassing and dangerous, what with the road blurring and contact lenses threatening to pop out.

Desperately, I grabbed my old audiotapes of Naked from the floor of the passenger seat and flung them into my cassette deck (yes, I'm that loser with the factory model stereo). Within five minutes, I was laughing enough to stop crying, and for the next few hours, I was driving along just fine. I started crying again when Sedaris read about coming to grips with his mother's cancer: the phrase, "How do you prepare for famine when you've never known hunger?" summed up what I was feeling perfectly, because I wasn't just crying for my grandmother, but for my mom as well, who's getting on in years and is now considered high risk for breast cancer herself. Thankfully, "Naked" came on next, and by the time Sedaris read about his brother's fume-induced on-the-job nudity (nothing beats him imitating the Rooster), I was laughing again and made it home safely.

All of Sedaris's books are freaking hysterical (Holidays on Ice a little less so, excepting "the Santaland Diaries"). Buy them all, both in print and audio; you'll never get tired of them.

2 out of 5 stars Disappointed.......2007-06-13

I ordered this book from Amazon specifically off of the great reviews. It was said to be hilarious and side-splitting. I did find some parts amusing, but for the most part I found my self skimming to just finish the book.

2 out of 5 stars Somewhat funny..........2007-06-12

Somewhat funny, but not worth nearly the hype these reviews have attributed to this book. If you've read everything else, consider this book. If not, don't waste your time. I won't review the pointless prose of each chapter. It was disjointed and in many cases, it tried to be much funnier than it is. One or two of the stories in this book are worth reading, but it is nothing compared to what some of these reviews claim.

When I read, I want one story that will keep me turning the page for 500 pages. This is comprised many stories that make you want to turn the page simply to see if it gets any better. It may be of some interest to light readers who want to read a story in 10-15 minutes. There are plenty in this book to choose from. Otherwise, find something else.

4 out of 5 stars Amusing.......2007-05-29

Not hilarious as suggested by other readers, but amusing in every way. Written in a frank, straight forward way, you can almost imagine you are sitting next to David as he goes about his crazy life. The first chapter was off-putting for me and I ended up reading it last instead of first and it made a whole lot more sense for me in that order. I'll read more of his books for sure!

4 out of 5 stars Always a Star.......2007-05-27

Sedaris is a cult classic. Although this book is not `Me Talk Pretty One Day' it has its own merit. Sedaris' whit and humor are refreshing and have made a huge impact on the idea of the memoir.

Amazon.com

A collection of stories and essays by humorist and NPR commentator David Sedaris based upon his own experiences and the hidden perversity that can be found in Anytown, U.S.A. Here are images and blasphemies that nice people don't dare look at--blatantly exposed and told with the clear, casual voice of intimate knowledge. Sedaris' humor is born of compassion and his tales range from the sharing of cheery Christmas letters featuring infanticide, to experiences of the Gay and Famous (Charlton Heston and Elizabeth Dole, for example), to the lives of siblings named Hope, Faith, Charity and Adolph and to alcoholics and chain smokers you can laugh with.

3 out of 5 stars I guess Santa Land diariers is the best but...........2006-11-08

I read so many reviews that mentioned the SANTA LAND DIARIES that I absolutely had to read this book...the SLD while entertaining and fun was a bit of a disapointment. Most likely because the way some people talked about it I was expecting it to be the best thing DS had ever written...it isn't. I loved NAKED and Running with Scissors (ha just kidding I know that isn't DS) and ME TALK PRETTY ONE DAY and I think if you haven't read anything of his definetly go to one of these tried and trues instead. David is at his best when he writes non-fiction (or at least some sort of version of non-fiction) stay away from his fiction for the most part it disapoints when compared with his other stuff.

4 out of 5 stars Barrel Fever-Sedaris.......2006-11-06

I really enjoy reading Sedaris. I love how he can make you cringe & laugh on the same page. My favorite by far, "Naked". He's got a wonderful style of keeping you interested, you cannot read fast enough! If you enjoy his work, you will also like Augusten Burroughs.

3 out of 5 stars David Sedaris: The Early Years.......2006-10-08

Barrel Fever

It's probably best to read Barrel Fever AFTER you have read all of Sedaris' other works. As other 3-star reviewers note, Sedaris' more recent collections are far funnier and better crafted and stylized. If you pick up Barrel Fever and have not read Me Talk Pretty One Day, you may get the false impression that Sedaris is a so-so writer whose is variably funny and witty. I prefer to look at Barrel Fever as an early photograph of what Sedaris would eventually fully develop and polish.

Many of the stories/essays in this collection are too short to give more than a cursory glance at their subjects. When you finally get to the last work, SantaLand Diaries, you feel like Sedaris has finally reached you as a reader, and you (hopefully) will forgive the previous missteps and awkward experiments in style. Barrel Fever has plenty of funny moments, but it is simply not nearly as mature as Sedaris' later books.

1 out of 5 stars No thank you. .......2006-09-18

Pedestrian, insipid, and banal are all descriptives with more life than what is encountered in this collection of bleh.

It's unfortunate that the author applied his wonderful writing style to expertly strip all sense of humanity and intelligence from his characters, deciding instead that every represention and encounter be woven from identical nothingness.

After reading Barrel Fever I was left with a nagging feeling that I had been witness to little more than the kidnap of many perfectly innocent words for the ransom of a contracted book release.

4 out of 5 stars Not for everyone.......2006-09-15

This is David Sedaris' first book. If you like his collections of essays, you won't necessarily enjoy this. The book focuses on short stories. There are only four essays, and one of them is "The Santa Land Diaries," which is also in Holidays on Ice, and probably isn't new material for the average Sedaris fan, as it's been played on NPR at least once a year since 1992.

The first story, "Parade," is about all the male celebrities the narrator has slept with. "Glen's Homophobia Newsletter Vol. 3, No. 2" is just what the title suggests, and involves Glen bitterly recounting unrequited love with a cashier. "Giantess," one of the essays, is about Sedaris trying to publish some fetish erotica. Definitely not the usual ex-patriot-from-a-crazy-family stories he's so well known for.

If you pick this up expecting it to be like his more popular books, you're going to be disappointed. The stories are dark, which most people can't stand because they see Sedaris as a humorist. However, if you look at how dark his humor is, you'll see that what's going on in Barrel Fever isn't much different from his usual style.

If you are driving, pull over. If you are at work, close your door-unless you don't mind your colleagues seeing you doubled over, in tears, on your office floor. With this CD, taped before a delirious sold out audience at Carnegie Hall, you are there as David Sedaris performs new stories from his upcoming book. A parrot who mimics an ice maker, lovers quarreling over a rubber hand, and a Santa Claus who moonlights from his job as bishop of Turkey-the cast of characters in these stories is like no other. This new work will appeal to David's loyal fans as well as admirers of the classic comedy albums of George Carlin, Bill Cosby and Steve Martin.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars David Sedaris is hilarious!.......2007-04-12

Listen to David tell stories about his family and laugh until tears roll down your face.

5 out of 5 stars Sedaris Family is Kooky and Fun.......2007-01-13

I've enjoyed reading David Sedaris' books, but listening to him tell these stories is even more enjoyable.
I listen to it mostly while driving. It seems to help control my road rage. :}

5 out of 5 stars Roll on the floor funny.......2007-01-03

I am still laughing over "Six to Eight Black Men". We make all of our friends listen to it - I don't know if they like it as much as I do, but I don't care. Mr. Sedaris sounds just like that wicked little voice inside my head: sarcastic, inquisitive, paranoid, and funny as heck.

2 out of 5 stars I didn't laugh once!.......2006-12-21

Maybe Sedaris doesn't translate into audio for me. The books make me laugh plenty, but I couldn't get through the first ten minutes of this CD. I didn't laugh once. Maybe he's just too deadpan...

Also I noticed he's just reading straight from his writings. So there is no interaction with the audience. Perhaps that's what I need to hear from a live "performance".

5 out of 5 stars Very, very funny.......2006-11-07

Listening to David Sedaris is much better than reading him. So much of his humor is in his voice, inflection and timing. If you like his books this is worth picking up. If you've heard some of these monologues on the radio, it's nice to be able to listen to them whenever you want.

5 out of 5 stars Why are you reading this itstead of buying the book?.......2006-03-23

This book is bound with a split hardback/softback cover, so if you appreciate design -- which I assume you do since you're considering a compilation of book designs -- the book is worth buying for this odd cover arrangement alone.

4 out of 5 stars FUN COVERS.......2006-01-26

This an excellent ,colorful book with very useful and informative comments, they are also humorous.Kidd mentions that he shows failed designs when he lectures to show that even a successful designer has failures.Unfortunately,in my opinion, the jacket for this volume falls in this category, its clever but not practical.because the cover is split in two parts its an irritation to hold and eventually the cover will be bent when laying down or storing in shelf.Still a must have in this genre. Now how about a Susan Mitchell collection?
ps.i followed my advice and bought the hardcover .Amazing its even more unwieldy, the cover is half hard and half soft, yikes!I ended up buying the soft cover to keep and treat it very carefully ,was that the point of this nutty design?I guess this cover will enter the hall of fame and certainly will be a collectors item if its never opened.Argghh!!!

5 out of 5 stars Excellent book on the process of graphic design........2006-01-16

I highly recommend this book to any graphic designer. He details nearly every cover design, and its great to hear the back story, and see preliminary designs and alternate final designs. Ironically, my only complaint about the book is its cover. I have the paperback edition, the cover only covers half of the book, and this makes flipping through the pages kind of unwieldy. The cuteness of this cover design wears off quickly. It will be interesting to see how he rates this cover in the sequel to this book in 20 years.

5 out of 5 stars Inspirational.......2006-01-11

Chip Kidd is one of those people who makes me think about the work that I do, and inspires me to try to be more creative. Some design lends itself to stealing and there is a tendency to try to emulate styles, but you can't do that with Kidd's work because it is the idea itself which is so fantastic. He manages to find a perfect way to complement the work of the author and create an ideal package. While his work doesn't conform to any particular style, I find that I can easily spot Kidd's covers on a crowded bookstore shelf. (Sometimes his colleague Carol Devine Carson can fake me out with a well designed spine, but I can pretty reliably pick out a "Kidd" 90% of the time. I find that I sometimes buy books on the strengths of his covers alone.)

Kidd makes me try to expand the way I think about what I'm trying to say, and for that reason, this book will be a frequent reference.

5 out of 5 stars Stunning.......2005-11-21

Wow. This book - much like Chip Kidd's design work - is simply stunning. Every page is engaging.

Fortunately, Chip Kidd happens to be a very good writer. There is no ego here, Kidd keeps a sense of humor throughout.

This is a beautiful book for every designer to add to their library. My one suggestion would be to spend a few extra bucks for the hardcover edition...

Book Description

From the #1 bestselling author of Me Talk Pretty One Day and Dress Your Family in Corduroy and Denim comes a collection of the short stories David Sedaris loves most. Containing the work of both contemporary and classic writers, <B>CHILDREN PLAYING BEFORE A STATUE OF HERCULES,</B> edited and introduced by Sedaris, gives his legions of fans a glimpse at the writing he finds inspiring - and helps them discover the truth about loneliness, hope, love, betrayal, and certain, but not all, monkeys.

David Sedaris fell in love with short stories while living in Odell, Oregon. Sedaris writes, "When apple-picking season ended, I got a job in a packing plant and gravitated toward short stories, which I could read during my break and reflect upon for the remainder of my shift. A good one would take me out of myself and stuff me back in, outsized, now, and uneasy with the fit." Featuring such notable writers as Alice Munro, Tobias Wolff, Lorrie Moore, and Joyce Carol Oates, readers will reconnect with classics, as well discover fantastic but lesser-known writers.

Borrowing the book's name from an Adriaen van der Werff painting, <B>CHILDREN PLAYING BEFORE A STATUE OF HERCULES</B> is David Sedaris's attempt to share his passion for short stories with a wider audience-and his enthusiasm is contagious. "The authors in this book are huge to me, and I am a comparative midget, scratching around in their collective shadow. 'Pint sized Fanatic Bowing Before Statues of Hercules' might have been more concise, but people don't paint things like that, and besides, it doesn't sound as good."

David Sedaris is publishing this book to support 826NYC, a nonprofit tutoring center in Brooklyn, New York. All of his proceeds, after permission expenses, from <B>CHILDREN PLAYING BEFORE A STATUE OF HERCULES</B> will benefit this organization designed to help students ages six to eighteen develop their writing skills through free writing workshops, publishing projects, and one-on-one help with homework and English-language learning. In the book's epilogue, Sarah Vowell describes the fine work done by 826NYC.

4 out of 5 stars Beautiful contemporary collection............2007-01-10

....For people with a bit of an off-the-wall sense of looking at the world. If you're looking for a Norman Rockwell-ish collection of Americana, you won't find it here. If, however, you are more into the offbeat, it's a great late-night read. In other words, great collection.

5 out of 5 stars Good quality item........2006-07-27

The book I ordered was in great condition. It arrived extremely quickly after I ordered it. I was very satisfied with my purchase - overall a great transaction!

    4 out of 5 stars Stories.......2006-04-29

This is a collection of stories hand-picked by essayist David Sedaris who also edited the collection and provides the introduction. This is an okay read if you like dark, funny stories.

4 out of 5 stars Thought-provoking stories for our time.......2006-03-02

This is a compilation of David Sedaris' favorite short stories by literary greats such as Alice Munro, Flannery O'Connor and Dororthy Parker, just to name a few. With a crowd like this, you can expect stories that will leave you ever so slightly unsettled, such as Tobias Wolff's "Bullet in the Brain" and Lorrie Moore's troubling tromp through a pediatric cancer ward in "People Like That Are the Only People Here: Canonical Babbling in Peed Onk." The stories seem to gather eccentric value as the book progresses. They are provocative and probably not best read right before bed. But Sedaris has indeed gathered the best of the best, and each of the stories represents an intricate piece of literary art.

But there is another reason to buy this book. All the proceeds benefit 826NYC, an afterschool tutoring organization that also does community outreach by way of writing workshops for young people. Literature to help foster literature-it is a great idea and one worthy of support.

2 out of 5 stars Just a random collection of random short stories.......2006-01-31

Half of these stories I have read before, and the other half I did not like. Everything in this book is pointless. First of all, Sedaris' name in big letters on the cover. Why? Because he wrote a silly introductiuon and made this awkward selection. The reason the book is published? To benefit some cause that most of us could have not cared less about. Well, I am giving two stars and not one, just because I liked the color of the cover. Kind of greenish salad color.
