Book Description

A classic of 18th-century thought, Schiller's treatise on the role of art in society ranks among German philosophy's most profound works. An important contribution to the history of ideas, it employs a political analysis of contemporary society — and of the French Revolution, in particular — to define the relationship between beauty and art.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent edition of an excellent work........2006-10-14

Writing in the 1790s, Schiller united the rigorous epistemology of Kant and Fichte with Plato's dynamic account of the development of the soul to produce one of the most beautiful works of philosophy in the European tradition. The Letters on Aesthetic Education offer an interpretation of the development of the individual and the parallel development of Western civilization. These interpretations focus on the conditions that allow for mental health in a human individual and society, and especially demonstrate (as the title indicates) the crucial role of artistic experience in healthy human development. This is a great work, and a great introduction to the other German philosophers of the 19th Century (Hegel, Schopenhauer, Nietzsche, et al). This edition is very good: the translation is good, and it has a facing German text. Highly recommended.

5 out of 5 stars The best (and only) available translation of Schiller plays.......1998-11-24

This is an awesome collection of truly outstanding translations of Schiller's drama, five plays total, including "The Robbers," "Don Carlos," "Mary Stuart," "Intrigue and Love," and "The Maid of Orleans." This whopper of a 700-page volume will allow the modern reader to see exactly why Schiller is justly ranked with Goethe as the second giant of German literature. For anyone interested in an inexplicably neglected major figure in world literature, this book is indispensable!

One of the worst examples of Physics text books. Explanations are poor. Very limited number of examples. And the examples are not clearly explained. By making it too simple the author has sacrificed rigor and has ended up confusing students. I would not recommend this text book as an introductory text book on physics to juniors and seniors in high school. I am yet to find a better book than Giancoli's for a non-calculus based introductory physics text book.

1 out of 5 stars Have I just encountered the worst book in all of history?.......2005-11-28

Quite possibly.
While I'm not nearly so far as some of these reviewers were when they reviewed the book, this physics book has pushed me so far beyond the reaches of my patience that I find no reason why I should not share with you how horribly this book fails to explain physics anyway.
In all my years of science classes, I have never come across a book this inept at conveying concepts. Generally my rule of thumb is, if you can look through a chapter, find the paragraph or so of information you need to answer a question or solve a problem, maybe an example problem to look at, then you've got a good book before you. This is not one such book.
Though the chapters are short, there is no conciseness or organization to the information within them. In order to learn a concept, you must trudge through three pages of very very very watered down information (who doesn't understand RISE over RUN equals SLOPE?). Normally, if a person gets impatient with the watered down stuff, they can skip to a box that has the equations, or a diagram with a caption underneath it. But I've discovered that this is impossible to do here. The text basically is the caption of all the wonderfully abundant diagrams and photographs provided AND the lesson material all in one.
And as for the diagrams, graphs, and other visuals, they seem to be poorly placed on the pages. Often times they are not labeled well enough to know what paragraph it is associated with, as if they were only afterwards slapped onto the page (which could explain why some of the explanations of these diagrams are downright cryptic).
There is no effectiveness to the method the author uses to explain concepts; there seems to be a meaningless abundance of explanation on how to draw diagrams, but when it comes down to the concepts, there's little to work with. If he was more succinct and organized, perhaps physics would make sense to many more students that have to work with this book.

2 out of 5 stars 34%*(65)*&##354*#(76^7)(216)=.......2003-09-13

Exactly. This is what the book looks like if you go to a store right now and open it. This book is virtually a math book although physics is about 60% math and 30% science information, this book is like 95% to 5%. Not only that the explainations for some of the problems are really bad. The reason why people think physics is hard is b/c of books like these that make it hard. THEIR are even mistakes in the formulas they use and they dont round numbers to significant digits. Im the top of my class in physics only b/c i like science, this book can change your mind real fast. The book does not explain who and how which is vital in learnig and passing any science test. For example Isaac Newton proposed the law of gravity. It just tells you concepts and terms that came from nowhere. The only good part about it is webassign that lets you practice problems online. d.

1 out of 5 stars Weak book.......2003-01-07

This book is very colorful and full of wonderful photos. Yet photos and color alone will not help you learn physics. The example problems they give are not explained step-by-step in a way that makes the application clearer. Worse yet the problems may be wrong some of the time. There are a few chapters that could be combined instead of splitting them up. Also, Newton's Laws are totally isolated from each other instead of being grouped together. The only way (at least that I know) to suceed in phyiscs is to work the problems. The book has a wonderful assortment of problems- yet no solutions or even answers are found in the back. Since most physics teachers won't give credit without work I don't see why putting the answers in the back could hurt. Overall the book is weak. I would read this book and do the homework assigned from the book, but my preparation for a test would come from a review book and a practice book with hundreds of solved problems (Schaum's or REA). That seems to work best for me. Oh and the last part in any physics course that determines how good you do is the teacher. For me I am not so lucky. But to you I wish the best of luck. You may have the same problems with this book that my whole class and apparantly other schools have had, or you will do well.

1 out of 5 stars Physics Principles and Problems.......2002-01-18

This is acually Jonathan Ray of Midlothian Virginia. I have spent many a late night pondering over the absutities I have read in my physics book. I am atempting to learn physics from this book but it seems that all I am learning is how to draw silly little pictures. The answers in the back of the book to the practice problems are wrong tothe point that I am woried when I get an answer that agrees with the the back of the book. On top of this there are numerous typeos on the text. On top of this there is no actual organization in the book as one has to read several chapters to understan Newton's laws which are presented out of order I might add. Overall a very confusing text that is not worth the paper it is printed on.

Book Description

When Schiller completed Wilhelm Tell as a "New Year's Gift for 1805" he foretold that it would cause a stir. He was right. In the midst of Great Power politics a play which drew substance from one of the fourteenth-century liberation movements proved both attractive and inflammatory. Since then the work as become immensely popular. This new English translation by William F. Mainland brings out the essential tragi-comic nature of Wilhelm Tell but also emphasizes its impressive formal unity.

Schiller based his play on chronicles of the Swiss liberation movement, in which Wilhelm Tell played a major role. Since Tell's existence has never been proven, Schiller, a historian by profession, felt he had to devise a figure who would bring the uncertainties and contradictions of the various Swiss chronicles into focus. Respected for his courage and skill with a bow, for his peaceable nature and his integrity, Schiller's archer—while always ready to aid his fellows—habitually seeks solitude. In the midst of political turmoil Wilhelm Tell is the nonpolitical man of action.

Keenly interested in the problematic interplay of history and legend, Schiller turned it to be dramatic advantage. He constructed his play to illustrate the greatest possible development of the character traits suggested for Tell by the chronicles. The result of Schiller's supreme achievement in historical drama.

4 out of 5 stars Interesting.......2005-04-29

This was apparently Schiller's most popular work during the 19th century with many, many performances in Germany in the century after his death. In the form of Rossini's famous opera, it probably reached an even wider audience. To modern audiences, however, this play has less appeal. Schiller's celebration of romantic nationalism and ethnic solidarity seems almost cliched. This is not a criticism of Schiller's writing but a reflection of the extent to which nationalist assumptions have penetrated our culture. Its difficult to look at this play in the way that 19th century audiences in a Germany still fragmented on the basis of feudal political structures must have seen it. At the same time, Schiller was able to appeal to Liberal, reformist traditions by stressing the importance of individual freedom and dignity. The stagecraft of this play is impressive and Schiller includes enough psychological detail to prevent the characters from being stick figures. The dialogue is not Schiller's best work and some parts come across as bombastic. Well worth reading but this work will be of most interest to those interested in Schiller, German literature, or 19th century European history.

4 out of 5 stars An immortal tale about freedom.......2000-11-14

In this book, Schiller takes the old legend of Wilhelm Tell and gives it the shape and structure of a novel. It is a wonderful tale about Tell, a mountain man who is very angry at the despotic and cruel ways in which Gessler, the representative of the hated Austrians, treats the peaceful Swiss people. Tell refuses to give in to Gessler's mischievous way, suffers a lot (remember that he has to shoot an arrow to an apple standing over his son's head) and eventually leads his people in a revolt against the Austrians. If this is perhaps not accurate history, it is the stuff national prides are made of. One thing to pay attention to is the marvelous scenery, the very old towns with their downtown parks, the mountainous Swiss Alps surrounding the small cities, and helping Wilhelm Tell escape Gessler's guardsmen. Schiller, as one of the leaders of the Romantic movement, creates a great story out of an old legend, giving shape to one of the most famous stories, justifiedly so.

5 out of 5 stars A great piece of Swiss History, told by a great author........1999-04-20

Wilhelm Tell is a great story of courage, friendship, and the will to help those who are in need. It is a great translations, but if you can, read it in it's original form of German, there are always, lines which are impossible to translate from one language to another.

    5 out of 5 stars Wallenstein is a Masterpiece.......2006-04-06

The Wallenstein trilogy is a fascinating work, constructed in an unusual and innovative manner, and marked by unusually powerful language. Wallenstein is a profoundly ambiguous figure. Was he a proto-German nationalist? A seeker of peace and religous moderation? A determined schemer aiming to develop his own Empire? Some combination of all of these? Schiller, who taught history and was the author of a history of the Thirty Years War, seems to have had the same difficulties in defining Wallenstein as everyone else. To approach Wallenstein, Schiller uses an indirect and very creative method. While Wallenstein is the central figure of the trilogy, he is hardly on stage in the first 2 plays, Wallenstein's Camp and The Piccolomini, and even in the last play, Wallenstein's Death, much of the action concerns other characters. Schiller shows Wallenstein by demonstrating his effect on other characters. In the short initial play, Wallenstein's Camp, Schiller presents the common soldiers' attitudes towards Wallenstein. In The Piccolomini, Schiller shows Wallenstein's attributes by dealing with different members of Wallenstein's court, particularly the Piccolomini, father and son officers who struggle with their divided loyalty to Wallenstein and the Emperor. In a brilliant stroke, Schiller makes each of these different characters exemplify a different aspect of Wallenstein's character. In essence, Schiller makes Wallenstein a kind of universal figure exhibiting a huge array of human traits. In the final play, Wallenstein's death, Wallenstein's inability to choose among or reconcile these different aspects leads to a paralysis of decision and his death. This is all presented with superb characterization and powerful language, including Shakespearean-like set piece speechs of considerable poetic power, even in translation.

ONE OF GERMANY'S greatest writers, Schiller is best known for his influential dramatic works. The Man Who Sees Ghosts, his only novel, was first published in 1789 and proved to be his most popular work, mainly owing to its masterful treatment of the then fashionable theme of the occult. While in Venice, a young prince of Protestant faith becomes embroiled ina diabolical net of political intrigue and religious conspiracy. Fate takes its course and steers relentlessly towards a climax of shocking violence and death.
