Wine Journal review.......2007-03-25
Good size to carry; sturdy pages and book covers; basic and to the point guidelines outlined for evaluating wines being tasted; provides 140 "tasting notes" pages. Definitely recommend it.
Handy Little Journal.......2007-02-22
This one is good for carrying with you as you explore new wines in different locales.
great book.......2007-01-17
it's great, not a scratch or a dent. it's been fun to fill out.
Great way to keep track of wines........2006-12-21
I bought this journal during a wine course I was studying recently. It's small enough to fit in a purse or pocket, but big enough to read your own writing. I think it's a great way to keep a log of wines and varietals you like, as well as remember what to order next time around.

Great Resource for making your own 1930s clothing.......2003-12-09
If you are an experienced sewer who wants to make your own clothing from the 1930s, this is the book for you. It doesn't have hats or hose, but it has everything else from foundation garments to outerwear. A big plus for this book is that for a few of the garments, they give the pattern drawing and a photo of the complete garmment on a real person. The book is also a good resource for dating the patterns in your pattern collection, as it gives the general outline of styles from each year of the 1930s. To use the patterns, you must be an experience sewer, as the patterns must be enlarged and the directions are sketchy.

Book Description
Barron’s just-published test preparation manual for the CLEP—or College Level Examination Program—has now been augmented with a CD-ROM that offers a Computer Adaptive test that virtually replicates the actual test-taking situation. With its three pencil-and-paper style practice tests and answers, the book serves as an excellent review of all CLEP subject material. However, most students who prefer to recreate actual test-taking conditions will choose this brand-new combination book-and-CD-ROM, which gives them the most complete CLEP test preparation available anywhere. This software offers timed and untimed computer versions of the tests presented in the book. The test is scored automatically when the test-taker completes it. In addition, the manual presents subject reviews plus pencil-and-paper sample exams in English composition, the humanities, math, the natural sciences, and social sciences--history, with answer keys and explanations.
Customer Reviews:
Too many errors.......2004-09-27
In the English Composition preparation section, there are four practice tests to help you. The problem is that there are too many errors in the practice test questions. One answer tells you that "colonies" should be singular to agree with the singular verb, but the verb is plural in the question. Another answer tells you that "they" should be singular, but there is no "they" in the question. Also many of the sentences which Barron says are correct are poorly written and often lack proper punctuation. One run on sentence was called a dangling modifier. It is quite frustrating, to say the least.
I don't rate it one star because the effort put into this work is impressive, but I do recommend a revision of this book. It is desperately needed.
Some helpful info; many mistakes.......2004-01-20
I actually picked this book up at the library for some early prep for a state subject-specific test I'll eventually have to take (not for the CLEP). However, while I know this is harder than anything I'll have to take, the questions are definitely difficult and cover all the different aspects (I was focusing on the social science area). However, there are many erros in the answer key. The detailed answer is correct but the letter corresponding to it may not be. My favorite question was:
From 1845 to 1855, a considerable number of the immigrants to the U.S. came from:
A) China B) Ireland C) Greece D) Russia E) Spain.
Ireland, you say. WRONG. The answer according to the book is Germany. I have to admit from glancing at the other sections, I think the social sciences is easily the hardest. Anyways, it's worth getting if you are to take the CLEP probably but beware of mistakes. There probably is something better and more concise out there.
High Marks for a good review book.......2003-07-23
I needed a review book for the math CLEP. One of my friends recommended the Barrons CLEP review book. It turned out to be a very good recommendation. The types of questions in the book were almost identical to the types of questions on the test. There were no surprises, no types of examples or problems I had never seen before. Even the percentage breakdown the book described of the various problems was pretty accurate. There were 60 questions on each of the three practice exams in the book plus the book provided an additional trial examination. Plenty of practice that allowed me to sharpen my question/answer skills. I didn't notice any typo's in the answer part. The book also gives a brief explanation of each answer. This is where I though the review book was a little shallow. When I was familiar with the material, the explanation of the answer was fine. When I need more depth in the answer, the review book didn't have it. Well, it's a review book, not a text book so I did not lower my rating. Needless to say, I had a scale score equal to an 'A' on a 6 credit CLEP College math test.

The world knows Georgia O'Keeffe for her monumental paintings of flowers, shells, and sun-drenched New Mexico landscapes. She also worked on a smaller scale in watercolor, pastels, and charcoal, experimenting with themes and ideas. Fifty-five of her drawings are illustrated in O'Keeffe on Paper, which accompanies an exhibition organized by the National Gallery of Art in Washington and the O'Keeffe Museum in Santa Fe. The images work on several levels: viewing what at first seem brightly colored, jewel-like abstractions, with titles such as Pond in the Woods and Portrait of Paul Strand, we suddenly become aware of more complex, realistic forms. Witty and accessible, O'Keeffe's drawings remind us to recognize significance and beauty in our daily surroundings. The book's supporting essays are well written and useful. The first, which places O'Keeffe in the context of her teachers and colleagues, is an excellent survey of the early-20th-century American avant-garde; the second explores the evolution of O'Keeffe's ideas, developing her youthful question, "If one can only reproduce nature, and always with less beauty than the original, why paint at all?" The final essay is a detailed analysis of the materials she used. An extra dimension is given by photographs of O'Keeffe at work and some illuminating pictures by artists who influenced her. Reflecting a statement by the critic John Canaday quoted early in the book--"In a drawing artists give us at full strength, but with minimum elaboration, the essence of whatever they have to say"--the images in O'Keeffe on Paper are deceptively simple but very satisfying. --John Stevenson
Book Description
A National Gallery of Art Publication Georgia O'Keeffe (1887-1986), one of the most innovative and renowned of all American artists, made works on paper throughout her long career. More than 50 of her most stunning watercolors, charcoals, and pastels are presented in this volume, the catalogue of an exhibition that opens in April 2000 at the National Gallery of Art, Washington, and travels in July to the Georgia O'Keeffe Museum, Santa Fe.
Images dating from 1915 through 1962 reveal O'Keeffe's unique imagination and technical virtuosity and chart the development of her personal abstract vision. Essays by well-known scholars address the significance of the works on paper to O'Keeffe's art as a whole; examine the importance of her choice of materials in the development of her aesthetic; and place O'Keeffe's works on paper in the context of her American modernist contemporaries. 80 illustrations, 60 in full color, 192 pages, 81_4 x 103_4" RUTH E. Customer Reviews:
A wonderful change........2000-09-27
This book is outstanding. It provides the reader, or viewer, with the opportunity to enjoy and study many of O'Keeffe's works, in watercolor, pastels, and charcoal drawings. I was very satisfied with my choice. I searched and searched for a book that contained works other than her standard oils and watercolors, that have been so available in other books for years. As an art student, this one fits the bill as a great book to study one of my favorite artists and her varied use of techniques and mediums. Who else could make an avocado look so asthetically wonderful. I highly recommend this book to anyone interested in the work of Georgia O'Keeffe. You won't be disappointed.

Customer Reviews:
A little disappointed.......2006-12-27
I have to admit with the high reviews I was expecting a really great cookbook. I was disappointed. Some of the recipes were extremely basic and many relied on convenience and processed foods. I prefer other Tex-Mex cookbooks, such as The Tex-Mex Cookbook: A History in Recipes and Photos by Robb Walsh.
The person who rated this with one star is a complete and total idiot, at BEST.......2006-05-15
I ordered this, because I love this type of food, and because I want to in some small way make up for the total moron who rated it with one star. She said because she does not know what the food is supposed to look like, and there are no pictures of the food in it. What planet is she from?
Hey, there are thousands of cookbooks out there with no color glossy pro photos of the food you idiot. Like most of the Junior League ones, and the entire 'Best of the Best' series, just as a tip of the iceburg. And I don't mean iceburg lettuce. I recently inquired about the cost of printing up a couple of hundred recipes with COLOR PICTURES, and it was on the order of $18. a BOOK. Now, if you only want cookbooks that are done from big name chefs, with big bucks behind their publishing, just stumble your way into your local bookstore and buy them.
But some of the very BEST cookbooks, with the most authentic recipes do not have photos. A lot are self-published. Now if the average person does the self-publishing route, and spends $18 to please some idiot, then tries to make a PROFIT on it- heaven help us what it would cost. Then the whiner would say it had a tacky binding. Or something.
How about this? Why don't you COOK some of the recipes and see how they TASTE? Then judge it. Did you knock your grandmother's recipe box because there were no glossy photos? Did she even bother to write any of her recipes DOWN? I say efforts like this author has made are well worth it and helps ALL OF US. And I thank her very much for the effort that it takes. Anyway, I now can safely say, having it in hand, it IS worth more than 5 stars.
I know, I should not be so mad about someone zipping in and totally trying to wreck a person's life and livelyhood. But it pisses me off big time having been the victim of it a few too many times myself.
It could have been better.......2002-11-17
It could have been better.
A Big Hit.......2000-09-24
This book provided me with new ideas on how to spice up my old and bland receipes. I am truly enjoying the excitment this is putting into my cooking. Elizabeth has captured the flavor of Mexico with a Texas / US flair. A great addition to any bodies cooking.
Delicious, subtle to spicy and not for calorie counters.......2000-09-21
I was in San Antonio for the first time recently, and discovered this thing called Tex-Mex cuisine. Why I didn't get the book when I was there, I don't know, but I couldn't stop thinking about all the great dishes I had when I was there. I have tried several recipes from this book and they are wonderful...the fideo pasta dish, avocado soup, cucumber salad and mango salad. The dishes accomodate light to hearty appetites, and the quantities make it easy to plan for entertaining guests. If you want a break from the usual, pick this one up.

Medieval Women Mystics: Gertrude the Great, Angela of Foligno, Birgitta of Sweden, Julian of Norwich: Selcted Spiritual Writings
Medieval Women Mystics is a wonderfully inspirational and uplifting book of spiritual writings by women who lived in the medieval era during the radically changing Christian reform. These writings were compiled and edited by a contemplative nun of the Carmelite Order, Sister Elizabeth Ruth Obbard.
In the introduction, Obbard introduces us to the medieval era and explains how the roles of women were changing and how their individual philosophy was mimicking the changes within society. Women were forming new religious orders, such as the beguines, and women saints were suddenly increasing in number. Women were stepping into new religious roles while the men were away on crusades. Many were adopting prophetic roles. As the age of romance and chivalry unfolded, women began to incorporate passion and romance into their Christianity, desiring to be the bride of the Lord. It was an era of widespread upheaval in the belief s of Christians.
Another important change that took place during this period was in education. Previously, education had been reserved for the elite, royalty or the wealthiest of the upper echelons of society. During medieval times, as women were elevated in their position in society, they were given the opportunity to learn to read and write. Many of them began to record their thoughts in written form. But while the men focused their writing on the theological aspect of spirituality, the women utilized all their senses, including their sexuality. This got their writings swept under the carpet and mostly ignored. It is only in the recent years, as the feminist movement has gained widespread support, that these writings are beginning to be taken seriously in the world of Christianity.
Obbard has arranged her book into four sections, one for each of the women included: Gertrude the Great, Angela of Foligno, Birgitta of Sweden, and Julian of Norwich. All four women lived between 1248 and 1420, but their lives were quite different in many respects. Each section begins with an introduction that tells about the woman, when she lived, how she lived, and what she believed. Then, Obbard provides many pages of their writings, covering the widest array of spiritual topics imaginable. My favorite was Gertrude the Great, who maintained that God was, in fact, a woman.
These writings will uplift your soul and warm your heart. They are the testimonies of four women that were thinking and acting ahead of their time. These women had a message to deliver to the world and had a gift for delivering it through the written word. Their writings are beautiful!

Gems of insight from the life of Charles Spurgeon on confidence, depression, anxiety, loneliness, change, and transition provide encouragement toward emotional wholeness.
Customer Reviews:
a great help.......2005-10-27
Spurgeon is one of the best encouragers and an easy read. He's my favorite!
Wonderful, must read book, especially for pastors.......2002-10-26
This book can really help anyone who struggles with depression. I never knew Spurgeon was so wise, but you better believe I'll be reading more of him. Last saturday I got so fired up about this book that I bought every used or new copy on Amazon that netted out under 10$ (I'm on a budget, afterall) to give away to friends.
This book will help you if you struggle personally with depression, and it will help you if you care for people who do.
A very rich, worthwhile read.......2001-10-21
A close friend of mine who has wrestled with depression for some time confided to me how deeply this book had touched his life. Indeed, while every page reflected in some measure the life of my friend, each page also touched on issues common to us all. What a comfort it is to know that so many in the body of Christ have traveled before us, traversed the same valleys, felt the same anxieties, trusted in the same God, and found Him to be absolutely true to His promises. Spurgeon himself, regarded by so many as one of the greatest preachers having lived, speaks with such frankness about his own internal and emotional struggles that he is likely strikes a common chord with all of us. Spurgeon's writing is uncommonly rich and filled with keen observations, anecdotes, and gems of wisdom based on the truth of Scripture. In one such anecdote, Spurgeon comments on the nature of death for the Christian as simply a transition to a more glorious life hereafter: "At Stratford-on-Bow," Spurgeon notes, "in the days of Queen Mary, there was once a stake erected for the burning of two martyrs, one of them a lame man, the other a blind man. Just when the fire was lit, the lame man hurled away his staff, and turning round said to the blind man, 'Courage, brother, this fire will cure us both.'" Although this book is composed almost exclusively of Spurgeon's writings and sermons, it does contain a modest amount of Skoglund's observations as well. In fact it seems that Skoglund has so saturated herself with the writings of Spurgeon that the styles of the two are at times nearly indistinguishable. Perhaps because of the denseness of Spurgeon's writings, this book can be slow going at times. However, as a relative newcomer to Spurgeon, I have the sense that Skoglund has done a wonderful job of piecing together many of Spurgeon's writings on emotional struggle and the encouragement which is to be found in Christ.
Spiritual Tonic.......2000-10-19
This is a wonderful little book. Elizabeth Skoglund has done a fine job of weaving together the writings of Charles Spurgeon on topics dealing with emotional pain and suffering. Each of the chapters are broken up into short segments. The book is best read "devotionally"; a little at a time. It has been a great help to me as a supplement to regular prayer and Scripture reading. Chapters are titled "Confidence", "Depression", "Anxiety", "Loneliness", "Change", and "Transition" (dying). Spurgeon, having suffered from these emotional problems himself, was ahead of his time in recognizing their more common sources and in dispelling some of the easy answers that are still common in evangelical Christian circles today. The first chapter, "Body, Mind and Spirit" offers a good foundation. It recognizes that we are whole persons, not separable into neat compartments. Emotional problems often stem from physical as well as spiritual causes. This book offers strength and courage from a great man who has been through plenty of dark times himself
Going On without Guilt.......2000-05-25
Bright Days, Dark Nights is for anyone 'Going On without Guilt.' It is a great book for daily reading.

Book Description
When stress has the "survival brain" on overdrive, what happens to the "thinking brain"? How can teens learn to use the mind-body connection to stay cool and make smart choices when the pressure's on? This book is packed with practical information and stress-lessening tools teens can use every day for reducing or stopping the stress and making decisions that won't leave a teen lamenting, "What was I thinking?" Throughout, quotes from real teens remind readers that they're not alone-that stress affects everyone, but it doesn't have to ruin your life. Includes resources.
