5 out of 5 stars Lenten meditations!.......2007-02-22

I am using this book with my adult women's Sunday School class as a study during lent. We are learning to practiced the discipline of daily prayer.
The women are loving it. The hands on use of the cup is wonderful. The corporate prayer rituals at the end of each week which are in the badk are
great. I would recommend the use of this book to anyone either just as a personal study or to use with a group.

5 out of 5 stars A Lovely Gift for All Women.......2007-02-07

Joyce Rupp reminds us that when we open our eyes to the world around us and become aware of the simple and the ordinary, we can find a great teacher. The cup served as my teacher for a personal six week journey and also became the foundation for leading an annual women's retreat. Thought-provoking, inspiring and full of love. This one is not to be missed!

5 out of 5 stars Spiritual Growth.......2006-07-05

Four of us teachers have met together since the beginning of Lent and this is our second book that we have used in our group. This is a beautiful book, that all of us have agreed, has increased our spirituality and drawn us closer to God and to others around us. We are almost ready for another book to continue our growth and are seriously looking at some of her other books.
This was well worth the money and has been very helpful for us in our daily and spiritual growth.

5 out of 5 stars Inspiring!!.......2005-09-27

This is an absolutely inspiring book. I haven't completed the whole program yet, but so far it's wonderful!

5 out of 5 stars A real heart's journey........2007-01-10

This book is so very special. It is definitely a wonderful companion prayer book for those who want to be in harmony with all of the elements of creation.

5 out of 5 stars What a lovely book!.......2006-12-29

This is a beautifully illustrated spiritual companion for all year long. Those who long for the gentle, loving presence of God will find a friend in this book. An earlier review was not very positive and I would like to comment on her remarks here- "It is written from a gender-neutral perspective; afterall, we're made in God's image, and about half the world IS female, so that doesn't make God only male, does it? Of course Jesus was a man, the Bible says He's God's Son, not daughter!" For being so loyal to Rome, you should know your Church history better and know that cultural standards of the time would not have tolerated a female deity. Sorry if you found this book to be Wicca-like. I found it to be very Catholic and Christ-centered, but then again, I'm on a spiritual journey, not a witch-hunt. Kudos to the authors on this great book!

1 out of 5 stars Overkill.......2006-01-25

I was pretty disappointed with this book. I guess I went in with high expectations. In the beginning of the book, I thought it might be worthwhile, but as I read on.......the repetitive nature of the book got old very fast. The book could have gotten its message across with a lot less pages. I found the ceremonies that they had in there useless....I hope they don't recommend this book for someone that is lonely. I think the authors idea for the book was a good one, but the execution of their idea didn't deliver in print.

5 out of 5 stars Prayer .......2006-01-15

I like the concept of viewing life and prayer through the four seasons. I like how the prayers can be used as an individual prays or for group prayer. The words speak to the heart when one does not have the words within. It encourages one to be aware of the presence of God in the day to day ordinary. Simple and direct yet challenging one to move from the head to the heart and be conscious of the movement of prayer. Helps to open our eyes and see life differently. A great addition and help especially when planning for prayer for groups.

5 out of 5 stars A positive Catholic look .......2005-11-27

If you are looking for a stern, in-your-face, pre-Vatican ll book on religion, this is not it! What you will find is a beautiful spiritual companian written by two wise and sensitive nuns and gorgeously illustrated by another talented sister. This is a healing book for many, especially those who feel their Catholic faith has let them down at some point in their life. I think this would also be great for anyone who embraces Waldorf- style education or parenting. I absolutely loved it!!!!!!

Joyce Rupp gives techniques to overcome many of the "goodbyes" a person faces in a life time. I found the chapter on Praying our Goodbyes particularly helpful. It does not take away the loss but helps one deal with it.

I have turned to this book whenever my life is out of balance. I found that whenever I am not completely calm or at peace, there is a devotional in this book that pulls me through. Rupp is a gifted author and spiritual guide. Her Christian appeal is universal. I attend a Mennonite church and she is a Catholic sister, yet her theology matches my own.

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful reflections, and no guilt!.......1999-12-23

Because this thoughtful, down to earth book is organized by month you DON'T GET that, OH NO, I'VE FALLEN SO FAR BEHIND THAT I'M CHUCKING THE WHOLE BOOK feeling that you get with so many books that have daily reflections (including the allegedly simple Simple Abundance). You can refer to the book daily, every couple weeks, or once a month and find it tremendously worthwhile. It also seems to be acceptable to people of all Christian denominations

Joyce Rupp captures the experience (running the gamut from anxiety-laden to peace-filled) that people desiring to deepen their relationship with God go through. One gets the feeling that Rupp is an admittedly fallible but patient and wise teacher who has been there herself. May I Have This Dance is a book (like Anne Lamotte's Traveling Mercies) that I feel comfortable recommending to friends who aren't particularly religious, but are seeking some indefinable thing (comfort? a new vision of God? insights about their own actions?).

5 out of 5 stars Rupp breathes life into meditation.......1999-03-31

Joyce Rupp creates a simple outline for the dance of life with God. These monthly meditations follow 12 themes which focus one's inner life in a depth of prayer with "litanies, creative writing, guided meditations, and ideas for reflection and journal writing". These inspirational suggestions may be used by one's self, or in groups to guide the participant in a lovely, inspiring, experience with God.

5 out of 5 stars Powerful words for a difficult subject--compelling!.......2005-12-08

Someone gave me your book as I was "walking" a dear friend through a terminal illness. Your words gave me comfort, especially when I didn't know what to say or do. Your book was my companion along the journey. Thank you for a wonderful resource--beautifully written!

5 out of 5 stars More than just stories.......2004-03-17

This book offers much more than just stories--they capture the lessons Joyce has learned over the years in caring for the dying. Each story punctuates a point about the special needs of the dying and how a caregiver can respond---whether it be with words, a touch, a special deed or gifts. Through Joyce's example, caregivers will be inspired by the dignity, respect, concern, and patience that is shown by Joyce for each of her patients.

5 out of 5 stars a wonderful guide and great uplifting gift from the heart.......1999-11-28

This book has provided so much comfort for myself and the people that I have purchased copies for. With so many of us losing ones we love, it is so comforting to hear such heartwarming and tearful stories from a caregiver. I applaud the book and highly recommend it to anyone grieving. Thank you so much for a wonderful book. I can't say enough.

Book Description

God is always there, always waiting for our invitation to come in. Yet sometimes we need help hearing the knock at the door, putting some time aside, or beginning the conversation. In this collection of scriptural reflections and prayers, Joyce Rupp offers us the encouragement we so often require to stop and pray. Her thoughtful, perceptive reflections on scripture guide us as we open our hearts and ponder the meaning of God's word in our lives. And her poetic personal prayers help us find words for the longings in our hearts.

Inviting God In is organized according to the seasons of the church year, from Advent and Christmas, to Lent and Easter, and on through the days of Ordinary Time and particular festivals. Each entry is just one page long, beginning with a verse from scripture followed by a reflection and a prayer. The book begins with an insightful reflection on prayer as "God's Gift to Us," reminding us of those basic truths about prayer that are sometimes easy to forget.

One of our best-loved spiritual writers, Joyce Rupp once again sets just the right tone to invite us to pray.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Inviting God In.......2007-06-20

I've just started using this book, and the reflections are very much to the point. Rupp's style of writing gives one much food for thought. It's simple, yet profound, brief (one page) but with enough wisdom to last and reflect on for the entire day. Each reflection really DOES invite God in!

4 out of 5 stars More Spiritual Nourishment from Joyce Rupp .......2006-11-15

Joyce Rupp continues to provide down to earth yet challenging spiritual nourishment to her readers. As with "May I Have This Dance", "Inviting God In" has excellent, brief readings for each season of the year. Our women's covenant group often uses her books for study and spiritual direction.

5 out of 5 stars A thoughtful and recommended spiritual reminder.......2001-11-11

Joyce Rupp's Inviting God In: Scriptural Reflections And Prayers Throughout The Year is a collection of scriptural reflections and prayers to encourage readers to remember to stop and pray. It's so easy to get surrounded by the chaos of everyday life and forget that God is always there, waiting to be let in. Inviting God In is a thoughtful and recommended spiritual reminder to carry worship and love in one's heart.

5 out of 5 stars I enjoyed this thoughtful book........2007-06-23

Reflections of this Catholic sister, as she walks the Camino with the semi retired priest of her parish.

This journey of two people of faith met with all the challenges the Camino can offer. Joyce started out as what I call an overachiever, and Tom as a steadying influence.

A couple concepts stuck in my brain from chapters of this book. Enjoy existential friendships. Return a positive for a negative. Negative things do happen, but Joyce would make a determined effort to see the positive - a concept I accept, but sometimes have difficulty applying.

I enjoyed this thoughtful book.

4 out of 5 stars great book, talked me out of it..........2007-06-02

this book was great, talked me out of going, realize that all that heat and dirt was not for me, will go trekking in nepal instead, much cooler temps, author did this to add to her spiritual credentials, alll about herself and her inner thoughts, suspect she had not been out of the USA before.

cheers

5 out of 5 stars Walk in a Relaxed Manner.......2006-08-09

This is an amazing book about an amazing experience--walking across Spain--and well after midlife. We share the hardships and blessings of this journey and are able to walk, talk and think in a relaxed manner while reading it. There are lessons subtly given that everyone can shsare.

5 out of 5 stars A Pilgrimage Of Body and Spirit.......2005-12-30

Back in the summer of 2003, I visited a former seminary roommate in Leon, Spain. I showed up a couple of days before his wedding after backpacking through Amsterdam, Paris, London, and Madrid. While strolling together through Leon, my Spanish friend remarked that people thought I was a "Pilgrim" because of my clothing and backpack. I asked him to clarify, and he replied that Leon was on the path of the Camino Pilgrimage. Thus began my interest in the topic.

"Walk in a Relaxed Manner" was the first book I read about the Camino. It's newly published, written by a 60-year-old nun who walked the Pilgrimage around the time I was in Leon. She hit the trail with a retired priest, and this book was born from that experience. The subtitle and theme is "Life Lessons From the Camino," and each chapter is based on a way she grew due to the Pilgrimage. For example, the book's title is shared with a chapter where Sr. Rupp describes how she learned to walk slowly and thoughtfully instead of quickly and competitively. Other chapter titles include "Savor Solitude," "Deal with Disappointments," and "Live in the Now." Such topics may strike some as trite. But I found it impressive that more often than not, it was the walk's difficulties that enabled her to internalize these truths.

The author writes in a clear and readable manner. She rejoices in the high points of the Pilgrimage, and is honest about the lows as well. Each lesson is presented in a thoughtful manner, and all are applicable to everyday life. However, like many spiritual insights perhaps some sort of defining experience is required to truly own them. But reading about these truths may be a way to prepare the heart for their eventual actualization. Although a Catholic nun in the Servite Community, Sr. Rupp keeps things fairly ecumenical throughout her tale. In addition, practical advice about the Pilgrimage is sprinkled throughout the book, and a list of helpful Camino resources is included at the end. There's even an authorized website based on Joyce Rupp's name if you want more info about her.

Someday I'd like to do the El Camino Pilgrimage. I hope I don't have to wait until my sixties, but sometimes you have to let things happen in their time. If I do walk it, I'll be glad if I learn and grow half as much as Sr. Rupp did. Recommended for all travelers and pilgrims.

5 out of 5 stars Down-to-Earth and Deeply Spiritual.......2005-11-16

As she approached her 60th birthday, spiritual writer and retreat leader Joyce Rupp abandoned her plan to hole up for a six-month sabbatical by the ocean to bask in solitude. Instead, she embarked on a 37-day walking trek across Spain with her friend Tom Pfeffer. The two prepared and trained for a year before making the historical pilgrimage from Roncesvilles on the Spanish side of the Pyrenees to the Cathedral of St. James in the city of Santiago, a journey commonly referred to as "the Camino."

Walking in the "relaxed manner" in the title was one of the first lessons these two self-described productive-oriented people learned. At first, Rupp explains, they believed their goal was to reach Santiago, but they eventually discovered that the walk itself imparted spiritual empowerment. Rupp goes into some detail about her competitive nature as their self-prescribed 12 miles was surpassed regularly by other "pilgrims." For the first few days, the two succumbed to their natural tendency to rush, rush, rush, and push, push, push. In the end, they agreed to take the advice of a friend who had walked the Camino earlier: "drink more water and walk in a relaxed manner."

Rupp laces the story with such insights, always connecting the events and experiences with "routine" life and sharing the positive effects the journey had on her. Her chapter on realizing "a tiny bit" what it is like to be homeless is especially thought-provoking. Following a transaction at a bank, Rupp was convinced the clerk thought, "This smelly pilgrim with her dirty hiking boots dug into this pack of weird things and, whew, the odor that came from that bag, it was enough to gag me..." The homelessness image also came up when she found herself in settings for which she was not "appropriately dressed" and other situations where she was "pierced" by disdainful looks and rejection.

Like Rupp's other books, Walk in a Relaxed Manner is filled with down-to-earth stories and deeply spiritual reflections.

5 out of 5 stars Fresh Bread.......2007-01-18

Joyce Rupp became our companion on a year-long journey of inspirational Saturday mornings. Her monthly reflections gave our women's meditation group "food for thought", as we read the short biblical passages and shared from the heart. It was a perfect book for very busy people that strive to live holy lives and need a short guide that can help them along the way. Each month offered many scriptures related to the topic (one for each day), questions to ponder, and Rupp's lovely poetry and prayers. We all loved this book!

    Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars A great help for midlife crisis.......2000-10-09

Joyce helps us face the dark corners of our hearts -- the places where we would rather not go. But, in doing so, she brings us into a light more bright than we ever thought possible. Using her suggested guided visualizations and journaling suggestions makes the experience more powerful, too. The visualizations can even be done by yourself. Don't rush through this book. Take your time and really enter the cave. I found Jesus waiting there for me.

3 out of 5 stars Dear heart, Come Home.......2000-02-15

My faith-sharing/prayer group used this in our weekly meetings. Our group ranges from 53 to 73, so we were all in different stanges ofour mid-life. Joyce's book seemed very "dark" and only one person could actually relate well to the contents. However, I felt it prompted more sharing within the group than other books we've used. The idea for group meetings were excellent. I also purchased the audio tape to go with this book which was excellent (5 stars). Great mediations and the chants are a great way to begin your reading or the evening's activity.

1 out of 5 stars Disappointing if you are a faithful Roman Catholic.......1999-08-17

This book does not contain the gifts of the Catholic faith, but instead is a new age spiritual treatise of total, unqualified tolerance. What comes to mind is the old phrase "if it feels good, do it".This is exactly what is wrong with society. Too much of doing one's "own thing". Nothing about obedience and belief in what will strenghten us through mid life is contained in the book. Do not read this book if you are looking for the answer to your mid life crisis. One thing about reaching fifty is that you can cut through the mustard and see a hidden agenda under a guise of honesty. This book will not lead one to their home, but farther away into confusion.

    5 out of 5 stars Honest,courageous, self-disclosing journey through mid-life........1997-10-24

This is Joyce Rupp at her best. The wisdom of living a heart-centered life is the fruit of this book. Any woman or man looking for a guide to lead them through the middle years "naming" the losses, bringing forth the images which help all of us to find our way with dignity, grace, and ah yes! humor, will treasure this book and pass it on to their closest friends. Highly recommended.
