Book Description
This rigorous but brilliantly lucid book presents a self-contained treatment of modern economic dynamics. Stokey, Lucas, and Prescott develop the basic methods of recursive analysis and illustrate the many areas where they can usefully be applied. </p>
After presenting an overview of the recursive approach, the authors develop economic applications for deterministic dynamic programming and the stability theory of first-order difference equations. They then treat stochastic dynamic programming and the convergence theory of discrete-time Markov processes, illustrating each with additional economic applications. They also derive a strong law of large numbers for Markov processes. Finally, they present the two fundamental theorems of welfare economics and show how to apply the methods developed earlier to general equilibrium systems. </p>
The authors go on to apply their methods to many areas of economics. Models of firm and industry investment, household consumption behavior, long-run growth, capital accumulation, job search, job matching, inventory behavior, asset pricing, and money demand are among those they use to show how predictions can he made about individual and social behavior. Researchers and graduate students in economic theory will find this book essential. </p>

A reader.......2006-04-28
I have never, e*v*e*r encountered a worse book in any field in my entire life. Ok, so chapter 4 and 9 are cute - but you know what, you really don't need to write a book to publish 30 pages of material that is actually worth reading.
I had a clever teacher who once said: "If you want to pick mushrooms, go to the forest" - well, if you want to learn Math, take the bus and head to the math department. The presentation is completely unclear, there is no motivation and the math is treated in a ridiculusly simplified way.
According to SLP, to prove a theorem, all you need to do is make assumptions - no need to motivate why you make them - that would be overkill, rather leave it to the reder to motivate (as an annoying exercise).
I dream of the day a Mas-Collel of macro economics comes around and writes a comprehensive macro book. Until this day, I am left wiping my behind with chapter 1-3; 5-8; and 10-End. Oh well.
The first step in the methods.......2006-02-23
This book is a first great step into the theory and results that you need to really understand the technicalities behind current research on Dynamic General Equilibrium Macroeconomics.
Further, it's an excellent complement of Sargent and Ljungqvist's Recursive Macroeconomic Theory.
Essential.......2004-11-08
Essential for understanding modern macroeconomic theory, for better or worse. Chapter 4 on Dynamic Programming under certainty and bounded returns is beautiful. I recommend using this book in conjunction with Sargent's RMT.
tough, terse, but worth the fight.......2004-08-31
This is a really challenging book, worth fighting through. Some of the exercises are impossible without outside help, so for self-study the solutions manual by Irigoyen, et al is *essential*.
Good as research reference, but not in mastering the field.......2004-05-13
As a research economist or graduate student, especially if working in economic theory or dynamic macroeconomics, it is difficult to overstate the value of this book as a handy guide for a set of essential facts (re: theorems) regarding the existence of solutions to dynamic programming problems or markov decision processes, as well as characterizing the properties of the set of solutions.
That being said, this is not the book a budding theorist wants to learn techniques from (For the mathematical prerequisites: measure theory, topology, probability, stochastic processes, hilbert spaces, there are better treatments in the math literature. For dynamic programming in discrete time itself: Bertsekas and Shreve's 1978 text is far superior). Though I am not an expert in macroeconomics, I believe Sargent's sequence of books is a better source for learning the how-to-do, while keeping the economic questions crystal clear: neither of these is a strong point of this book.

Some Interesting Essays, Some Surprising Lapses.......2007-06-26
The good: The book lavishes the mandatory amount of space on the usual topics such as racism and women, but fortunately reaches out to a larger audience. There is good material on science and technology as well as social sciences and public affairs. There's also a good selection of material of various rhetorical styles of writing. And the discussion questions after the essays generally avoid biasing the discussion. Very useable for class.
The so-so: One reviewer refers to the liberal bent of the texts. And it's abundantly clear that some perspectives receive very privileged status in Fields of Reading. So if you're looking for one version of current ivory tower orthodoxy, here it is. In that sense, there is little diversity in this book, really. So many other possible sources for writing and insights, from Fortune and BusinessWeek to Wired and The Wall Street Journal...I wish the authors had thought a little more outside their box.
The bad: Surprisingly unreliable editing. Incredibly, despite having five academics work on this, they still get important facts flat-out wrong. They apparently confused the number of wounded at Pearl Harbor with the number killed: they cite 1177 deaths in an editorial footnote, whereas knowledgeable writers (Prange) cite 2403 dead and 1178 wounded. And page 234 of my edition refers to the "missile" which hit Nagasaki!
I quote from the instructor's edition for the seventh edition; perhaps they bothered with fact-checking for the new edition. How these errors of fact endured this far is a mystery only the editors can answer. But perhaps the hidden text here is that there are only certain things these academics really care about getting right.
Motives for Teaching?.......2004-10-25
When you contemplate the long list of standard authors, Nobel Laureates, Pulitzer Prize-winners, worthy of emulation by students, what names spring to the forefront of your mind? Adam Gopnick, Vivian Gornick, Zoe Tracy Hardy? If not, you are out of touch with Ms. Magazine, The Village Voice, and The New Republic, those repositories of great literature, from which these and other authors are selected. You may not realize that "nonverbal courtship patterns in women" is on a par with the Declaration of Independence, or that war, racism, government, big business, fast food and most white people are all bad, or that minorities, women, homosexuals, and New York City are all good. You MIGHT, however, question whether this is really an English 101 textbook, as it pretends, or a social tract promulgating the doctrinaire beliefs of the political left. It is interesting reading, but whether or not one agrees with the selected authors, it is emphatically not a student textbook on writing, and it is not a good choice for that purpose compared to other texts available. It is not what it pretends to be.
Phenomenal Reading!.......2003-02-10
I had to purchase this book for my english course, but after only two weeks of reading and discussion I feel such an empowerment by the selections. I wouldn't be able to choose a favorite author because each one is represented so uniquely by their stories. After my class is over, I look forward to sitting down and reading those that were not assigned and re-reading those icons of society that were picked by my professor. If you want a short introduction to various famous authors then this is definitely a book you will enjoy!

Book Description
The successful implementation of health information systems in complex health care organizations ultimately hinges upon the receptivity and preparedness of the user. Although the Information Age is well underway, user resistance to information systems is still a valid concern facing the informatics community. This book provides effective management strategies to health care administrators, for the productive integration and maintainance of such information systems. The Second Edition covers three main areas: technical skills, project management skills, and organizational and people skills, including the practical implementation strategies necessary to make the system an operational success. The text will be complemented by 40 illustrations and 20 tables, as well as providing more guides and "how to" information, which are of great use to the reader. Key topics include: setting the stage; strategic vision, direction, and project planning; critical issues in project planning and management; critical design issues; the implementation process; negotiating political minefields; the critical role of leaders and leadership; dealing with end stage people issues; evaluating project success; managing the altered organization; and organizational and personal preparation for the future. The audience for this book consists of those who require sophisticated health information systems, namely health care administrators, CEOs, clinicians, IT developers, librarians, and professors.

Customer Reviews:
Great educational material!.......2007-05-01
This is a wonderful compilation of singable melodies from the folk and art music repertoires. Singing these melodies is far more appealing than just reading through purely made up solfege excercises. Each chapter contains melodies which are progressively harder and will help you, with practice and patience, to become a good sight reader, a skill any choral singer, composer, and musician in general should have.
Excellent, but what's the real excuse for the high price?.......2007-04-11
I agree with the reviewer who highlights the usefulness of the Ottman text; the additions and improvements (such as adding contemporary melodies) are indeed welcome. That's five stars for the book. Four for the high price.
However, I also understand the other reviewer's complaint about the very high price, particularly in the case of this particular sight-singing text. College book stores are frequently asked why their textbooks cost so much, and their current excuse is that "since textbooks often come bundled with CD-ROMs and other extras"--that is why the high price.
THIS price is just for a spiral-bound, soft-cover book. "1000 melodies," perhaps, but in a sight-singing text like this one most of these are simple and short (less than a page each). There are none of the above-mentioned "extras" bundled with it. This book, though excellent, has ALWAYS been, in my opinion, OVERPRICED.
The publisher is interested in profits, THAT IS their business, and that goal is in itself is not necessarily bad, when pursued honestly. We sometimes are oblivious that THAT is the main reason that standard college textbooks are constantly being revised (read: slightly altered) every couple of years. Older editions of the same textbooks would be just as effective, for instructive purposes. But business is business.
Addendum: Making money, in itself, is not a sin. In fact, isn't that one of the main reasons most people attend college, so that that they can become more effective at "making money"? Music majors have to recognize this fact, that their art has a business side. A great book on that subject is Angela Beeching's "Beyond Talent: Create a Successful Career in Music."
Finally, check out the comments about the business of music and art, made by the fictitious composer Richard Halley in Ayn Rand's 1957 novel, "Atlas Shrugged."
--Majok
An excellent resource for developing an essential musical skill.......2007-01-27
Typically, music students resist their music theory courses and enjoy the sight singing exercises associated with them even less. My experience as a student and as a teacher leads me to believe that this is usually because by the time the students first get around to learning this skill, they are already confident musicians on their instruments or have learned to sing some other way. To have to learn a new skill from scratch is disturbing and seems unnecessary to them. However, learning to sight sing brings many benefits.
Singing music helps one internalize the music more fully. One also develops a greater confidence with pitch than having it done in an instrument. It also helps one learn to sing through one's instrument - that is, to play even more musically. And by developing strategies to sing chromatic music, one has to think through the relationships within the piece. Once the skills are more fully developed, one can learn to come to terms with a new piece of music quite quickly. Therefore, one becomes not only more professional, the whole of one's musical experience deepens.
We used the second edition of Ottman's book when I was an undergrad in music in the late seventies and early eighties. This seventh edition is a much richer and more useable book. There are more than a thousand melodies, all nicely arranged to teach something specific. They are actual melodies from the literature rather than some abstract theoretical nothing. And there are lots of rhythmic exercises, so the student can gain skills in becoming more precise in rhythm and especially in rests (you know, letting the silence be silent). A new chapter with melodies from the 20th century is also a nice addition. The new edition also adds some exercises with structured improvisation for the student to experiment with his or her own melodies.
The spiral binding actually makes the book more durable and useable. It lays flat on your piano or music stand and the spine won't break and the pages won't be falling out. The print is crisp and clear which makes reading easy. This is important for a book you will be using in your theory courses for several terms.
Not only is this great for college students, I think high school and private music teachers would do well by their students to use this as part of their regular music lessons. Their students might fight it a bit (they always seem to), but they will become better musicians and more musical students if they develop the skill to sight sing.
Rip-Off.......2006-09-26
This review is not a review of the book (which, I guess, serves it's purpose just fine), but a review of the price. $70 for a spiral-bound book!?!?!?! As if college isn't expensive enough already.

Customer Reviews:
Molecular Biology of the Gene.......2002-10-25
Molecular Biology of the Gene written by James D. Watson is one of the best texts on biology of the molecular level. With ample illustrations this makes a wonderful text for students and those who want to learn more about the primary structures of proteins and the interplay between them.
Molecular genetics is but one part of the whole of biology, the nature of cells and how they divide, but this book makes an attempt to address both in a seemless fashion. Genetic code, the replication of viruses and the control of protein synthesis are all a part of this book.
I found the narrative to be straight forward and very understandable as the author makes the point in a logical and lucid manor. You will need some schooling in the biological sciences as this is not a book for the novice. This text will give the biologist of the future the rigor, the perspective, and the enthusiasm that will be needed to bridge the gap between the single cell and the complexities of higher organisms.
This is an excellent text.
Clear, Concise and Comprehensive!.......2000-01-08
This book gives a better understanding and representation of recombinant DNA procedures. All topics relevant to Molecular Biology of the Gene has been addressed in a lucid manner with excellent description and illustrations. A lot of progress had been made in this field hence. But this is a must buy for students as well as educators of molecular biology.

Great resource for K-7 math teachers.......2005-01-16
This is one textbook I wish the teachers of each of my children had at their disposal. It provides a great foundation for helping teachers focus on developing conceptual understanding of the key mathematical ideas K-7. The only drawback is that many of the great ideas for activities presented in the book are too small to be copied quickly by busy teachers; however, the richness of ideas and strong links between various type of representations make it well worthwhile despite its steep price.

Wonderful, though more text than I wanted.......2001-12-28
I was very pleased by the large number of high-quality reproductions. Still, as far as I'm concerned there should have been *more*. The book contains (a rough count) about 280 pages containing text or mostly text, out of about 630 total pages. However, I'm very happy with the book.
Excellent well presented book.......1999-09-14
The problem with art books is that they go out of print too quickly. This is a beautifully presented book on Rauschenberg that was released with the big retrospective at the Guggenheim in 97/98. Barnes and Noble still had copies avaiable as of Sept. 99, so check there -- they were even discounted!
This is a very comprehensive overview of Rauschenberg's work.......1999-06-04
For the fan and the collector, this book is an excellent reference guide that offers extensive illustrations of the works themselves, as well as documentary photos of the artist at work and play. A chronology, exhibition and performance histories are also included. I was also very interested in the information regarding Rauschenberg's work processes and collaborations with other artists. This is a fine addition to any art library.
This book was offered in paperback during a recent exhibition at the San Francisco MOMA, so if you can find the hard cover you should buy it.
Rauschenberg, the book.......1997-11-26
The book is beautiful, if very heavy. The fault lies not with the catalog but with the show itself. THERE'S TOO MUCH STUFF and not all of it is worth looking at. The book will prove to be an invaluable companion to the catalog from the National Gallery of Art's 1976 retrospective. But it (and the show) sure could have used some editing.
