Book Description
A woman survives a horrific attempt on her life, only to feel like a stranger in her own home, in the electrifying new novel from New York Times-bestselling author Karen Robards.

The house is all wrong. Her clothes are all wrong. When Katharine Lawrence recovers consciousness on the kitchen floor, staggers to her feet and looks at herself in the mirror, the beautiful face staring back at her is familiar-but wrong. Despite all the evidence-her pictures are all over the apartment, the clothes in the closets are the right size, and it's her hair caught in the brush atop the dresser-everything feels wrong.

Maybe the trauma of the attempt on her life has given her some kind of amnesia. She's twenty-nine, the special assistant to the head of the National Security Agency, and she's lucky to be alive. She also knows she can trust no one.

Before she can act on her instincts and run for her life, CIA Agent Nick Huston arrives on the scene. The CIA is conducting a special investigation of Katharine's boss, and the mystified woman in her "unreal" house is the key to the operation. But the real Katharine Lawrence has been whisked away for debriefing, and this expendable lookalike, Jenna Hill, is being used until the CIA gets the information it needs. But no one counted on Jenna Hill's outrage at being used. And no one-least of all Nick-could have anticipated the heat that flares between them as the game plays on.

Book Description
Ten years ago, Sarah Mason's six-year-old daughter vanished during an outing at a local park in Beaufort, South Carolina. Despite a furious search, little Lexie was never found, and Sarah was left to pick up the pieces of her shattered life and go on as best she could.
Then, on one hot July night, she returns home from work to hear the phone ringing. When she picks it up, a child's terrified voice whispers, "Mommy, help, come and get me . . ." The call is cut off, but not before Sarah's heart goes into overdrive: the voice belongs to Lexie. Six-year-old Lexie. Though ten years have passed, she sounds exactly the same.
Frantic, Sarah turns to the police, the FBI, family, and friends, none of whom can help. Out of desperation, she approaches Jake Hogan, once a detective assigned to Lexie's case. Jake is now a P.I., and though he is skeptical, the attraction he feels for Sarah pushes him to help her. Ben is convinced someone is deliberately tormenting the grief-stricken mother, and the continued tension of sketchy and unpredictable clues forces them to rely only on each other. Together they're caught in a nightmare search for Lexie, who might just still be alive-if only Jake and Sarah can hang on.

Ronnie likes the idea of being Senator Lewis Honneker's wife a whole lot more than she actually likes being married to him. She loves the power, the prestige, and of course the wealth and all of the comforts and beautiful things that he provides. But Ronnie is acutely lonely. Her husband is not the man she thought he was, and although long accustomed to it, Ronnie despises the strain of the campaign trail--especially the constant facade and total lack of privacy.
If those problems weren't enough, Lewis's voters despise Ronnie. As the younger, sexy, second wife, the senator's loyal constituency think that Ronnie broke up his first marriage. Because Lewis is up for reelection, expert political consultant Tom Quinlan is brought in to change Ronnie's image. He finds the task to be far more of a challenge then he expected--not only because Ronnie is difficult to direct, but also because the two can't keep their hands off each other. When the senator is found murdered and Ronnie is accused of the crime, only Tom believes she is innocent. The two work together to uncover the senator's sordid secrets.
Book Description
New York Times bestseller Karen Robards reaches new heights with this sizzling new novel in which one woman finds unexpected love against the unforgiving backdrop of political life, where a private affair can quickly become a public matter.
Ronnie Honneker is the senator's wife--his second wife. The Honorable Lewis Honneker, a man twice her age, is wealthy, successful, and revered by voters in his home state of Mississippi. What the public doesn't know is that this pillar of the community is fond of engaging in casual indiscretions. Now he's running for re-election and his young wife is expected to stand by him. Though scorned as the woman who broke up the senator's first marriage, Ronnie does her best to promote her husband's re-election campaign. But she never would have guessed that marriage to a wealthy man could be so lonely. The glamour of political life can't make up for the emptiness deep in her heart, a dark space she fears will never be full.
Until political strategist Tom Quinlan enters the picture.
Solid, quietly handsome, the southern boy-next-door, Quinlan prides himself on his work, never mixing business with pleasure. Called in to enhance the senator's campaign, he finds his biggest challenge in Ronnie as he struggles to make her appear less glamorous and more likable to the voting public. To him, Ronnie is a job. A routine assignment. So why does he find himself unable to stop thinking about her? Her fiery hair, her long, perfectly muscled legs, those inviting chocolate-brown eyes? Tom has never allowed himself to surrender to such feelings. . . until now.
Ronnie never expected to find love again, and certainly not with a man like Tom Quinlan. But she can't fight the pull that Tom has on her as he awakens feelings in her body that she'd thought were gone forever. And she knows the tempers that flare between them are only a cover for their barely contained passions. Together they discover that love and politics are uneasy bedfellows as they contend with their burgeoning attraction to each other, a swarm of snooping reporters, and a public growing increasingly suspicious of their relationship.
When the senator mysteriously dies in the midst of a sticky scandal, Ronnie and Tom must answer to the growing rumors of their love, and clear themselves of any guilt in his death. Realizing it would be easier to keep up appearances, they take the ultimate political gamble and risk everything for each other. But as the stakes rise, they learn that they must watch their backs.
And follow their hearts.

High school teacher Rachel Grant believed in her student Johnny Harris's innocence even after he was convicted of murdering his girlfriend. Now, 10 years later, he's out on parole and Rachel has taken him under her wing, even finding a job for him. It isn't long before their relationship changes and Rachel and Johnny become much more intimate. But when another murder occurs and Johnny is the prime suspect, can Rachel prove his innocence before it's too late? Karen Robards defines passion in this story of love and scandal in a small Kentucky town. One Summer is an outstanding novel that readers will turn to again and again.
Book Description
He was pure, unadulterated trouble. Johnny Harris is home again, his too-tight jeans and damn-your-eyes belligerence honed to perfection by a ten-year stretch in federal prison for murder. Now he's out on parole and ready for the job Rachel Grant has promised to help him begin a new life. Unlike the rest of the town, Rachel has always believed in her former student's innocence. But one thing has changed...
The sullenly handsome boy she remembers is still sullen, still handsome...but no longer a boy. And now the small Kentucky town is alive with gossip and whispers of a scandal, as friendship turns to passion and Rachel abandons a lifetime of propriety in the ex-con's arms. Then the killer strikes again. All evidence points to Johnny Harris, but Rachel knows he is innocent. And she knows she is next...as a shattering truth is uncovered and dark passions explode in the relentless summer heat.
Customer Reviews:
Great romance, poor plot........2006-08-24
I would like to submit two different ratings for this book. The murder mystery plot deserves somewhere between a 1 and a 2...leaning towards the 1, but the sizzling romance between Rachel and Johnny deserves a 5 for sure.
Similar to one of the reviewers below, I like to read all of the bad reviews before taking a gamble and purchasing a book, but I have to say that in this case, the criticisms about Johnny and Rachel's relationship didn't seem to match up with my impression of the book.
I think Rachel was a pretty decent character - I didn't adore her and laugh at her antics as I did with Sarah from Dark Torment or Susannah from Nobody's Angel, but I'd say she was a pretty decent protagonist. From some of the comments, I expected her to be a bitchy player juggling two men at the same time, but in context, that was not at all how it seemed to me. Johnny sounded pretty sexy and although I usually skim Robards' sex scenes, I loved the ones in this book. V. hot and heavy!
I think that the mystery was at best, weak and at worst, stupidly concocted. It just kind of popped up at you randomly and the ending really was kind of...stupid, I guess is the word for it. Random. I didn't really close the book with stars in my eyes the way I did for a few of her other books. I wish Robards had just concentrated on the romance instead of trying to throw a murder mystery into the mix. It just did not work and it rather insulted the reader's intelligence. It was hackneyed and relied on a lot of Deus Ex Machina. V. disappointing, but the romance is what I read it for, and that sure paid off!
Johnny's pain seemed so realistic and Rachel's feelings of consternation about their relationship were justified and also realistically dealt with. I believe that there IS a good progression showing how their physical relationship progressed to a more emotional and mental one. In fact, I think that it is definitely justifiable given that they did know and were once attracted to one another, years ago.
Anyways, I'd say the book is worth it for the romance, but yawningly dull during the mystery parts. Buy it on sale.
Wonderful book.......2006-08-01
I heard that this was one of Karen Robards best books and it was wonderful. I just loved Rachel and Johnny.
Johnny has been in love with 'teacher' since he was 16 or 17 and he has been fantasizing about her for the last 14 years, every night! She is the only one he can really count on and her support of him is heartwarming. In return, he will do anything for her. They share a deep passion and a devotion to each other that other books rarely achieve. Yes, Rachel is 5 years older than Johnny, but I think that it actually works here, and he pursued her, not the other way around.
As far as the murder mystery, I guessed the true culprit right away. The paranormal aspect was a little weird and would have been more believable if the motive had been inspired by mental illness.
Absolutely wonderful!.......2006-07-07
I absolutely LOVE this book!!! I just read it for the 2nd time today and loved it just as much as the first time. Cover to cover, I just enjoyed every element of the book. I will admit, though, that's it's probably not for everyone. I know some really dislike romance stories where the woman is older than the guy, and I know some wouldn't like how crude and abrasive Johnny is for over half the book. Plus there's a small paranormal element to the story that some would hate. But if you don't mind all that, it's a fantastic story.
The chemistry between Johnny and Rachel is wonderful. They originally connected when he was in high school, enjoying talking about books, poetry, politics, and whatever else together. Johnny had the hots for her, but their relationship then was completely platonic. It builds a nice base for the present tense of the story. Then when the meet again, they just can't stay away from each other no matter how different they are. Rachel is a prim and proper teacher, and Johnny is the quintessential bad boy. If there's one complaint I have about their romance, it's that you don't get a clear understanding of the progression of Johnny's feelings. He admits from the start that he's "hot" for her, but Robards doesn't really give you the how or the why those feelings progressed to him being in love with her. I would have liked to know that.
As for the plot. Interesting storyline, even if at it's base it's a tad predictable. It was pretty easy to guess that with Johnny back in town, another woman would die to try to make him look guilty. But Robards does a great job creating twists and turns to make the storyline unique and interesting. I never would have guessed the identity of the attacker or the reasons behind it all, though it all made sense...in a twisted, metaphysical sort of way. You have to allow your mind to stretch a bit to accept the reasoning in the plot. And there's a certain surprise element at the end that was a great addition.
Just a fantastic all around story. I love the opposites attract romance and the great suspense plot. One Summer is one of my all-time favorite books.
Rating: 4.5 / 5
Unrealistic..............2006-06-06
This novel was about a teacher (Rachel Grant) who believed her bad-boy student (Johnny Harris) was wrongly convicted of raping and murdering his girlfriend. After serving 10 years in prison, Rachel is Johnny's only ally. The story revolves around the relationship between these two characters and the mystery surrounding Johnny Harris's innocence. I felt both the romance & suspense aspects of this story were far-fetched.
I enjoy Robard's historical books much more than her contemporaries. With that being said, this novel held my interest, but I wouldn't recommend it to someone who is looking for a knockout.
One of my all time favorites.......2005-12-13
I love most everything i've ever read by Karen Robards, but this is my favorite by her. I've read it twice and may again one day. I just love the characters and i love that she doesn't make such a huge deal out of there age difference cause it's not like their ten years apart or anything. It's only a few years and that just makes it better for the characters involved. Very sweet love story! Definitely read it and you won't be disappointed!

Book Description
A woman. Her teenage daughter. A handsome, laid-back, chauvinistic rancher. And the savagery of unseen forces at large in the mountain wilds of Utah. New York Times bestselling author Karen Robards is here at her passionate best as she tracks the perils of the wilderness, the hidden face of violence, and--most awesome of all--the powerful feelings that evolve between men and women when lives are at stake.
Lynn Nelson is beautiful, harried--and divorced. A thirty-five-year-old single mother, she agrees to help chaperone her teenage daughter Rory and nineteen other girls on a wilderness trip. It seems pretty simple at first: the trip is sponsored by Adventure Incorporated, the weather is fine, and nothing is more troublesome than the minor skirmishes that sometimes flare up between girls and their mothers.
Except that there's more lurking along these mountain trails than adolescent hormones. Lynn and Rory find themselves set apart from the rest of the group, with only outfitter Jess Feldman for protection--he with the blazing baby blues, and the more than slightly macho attitude that women can't handle the outdoors. Normally Jess would be protection enough, but surrounding the trio is a danger far more menacing than any of them realizes--the face of an unknown and all too real evil is at large. As this terrifying ordeal plays itself out, the sparks that fly between Jess and Lynn make for a passion every bit as dramatic as the twisted trails of the majestic Uinta mountain range.

Least Favorite Robards Book.......2006-08-21
I bought this book after reading the reviews here and also because I've enjoyed the last three Robards books I've read. This one was not at all as enjoyable to me as the other three I read (Superstition, Whispers at Midnight and Paradise County). Maybe I'm just not a wilderness or cowboy kind of girl because the romance aspect was just ok to me, and the supense, while some parts were pretty good, mostly bored me. I just didn't care for this one, but I love Karen Robards normally so I'll continue to keep reading herbooks.
Excellent Romantic Suspense Novel!.......2003-08-01
Karen Robards is one of my favorite authors and this is one of her best books in my opinion. I was hooked from the first page.
This review is short and sweet. If you like romantic suspense, check this book out!
Good start-bad ending.......2002-06-26
This Robard's book was a disappointment. The first half held me in its grasp, making me want to read faster and faster but I could only shake my head once the good guys and bad guys met. From that point, it became unrealistic. Did not care for the "end of the world" scenario and how conveniently everything happened for the good guys. For example, when the good guys were cornered and going to be killed, oops, the rock plateau falls and all but one terrorist is killed and this one happens to think that maybe his associates might have been mistaken in their beliefs. Get real! Sorry Karen, I love most of your action/thrillers but this was a major dissapointment.
Dynamite and chilling.......2002-05-08
This is my favorite type of book ~ romantic suspense with a slightly religious element, and a sexy hero that I fell in love with.
My friend told me I would love this book and she was 1000% right. It's awesome.
Karen Robards wove her spell around me so that I couldn't stop reading. I almost missed a day of work I was up so late reading to the very end.
She interlaces story, character, and style with such ease that I didn't merely read the book, I lived and breathed it.
Robards' best, by far..........2002-04-07
A hometown fan, I've read all of Robards' books in a few months after discovering "Paradise County" in our local Target store. "Heartbreaker" is the best -- a delicious, fast-paced read with rich characters and delightful banter. I've actually given this book to several friends as gifts.
Also consider my second favorite, "Walking After Midnight." Both are what I call "pursuit" books, where the main characters are on the run, making for a heart-racing read where the main characters are better developed (the storylines focus on survival, street-smarts and the steamy romances that can grow in the process).
