I first saw this book on a cruise and knew I had to have it. Its an excellent book for the art enthusiast and a beautiful book for display. I highly recommend to anyone.

5 out of 5 stars Love the Peter Max book.......2007-01-09

I became fascinated with Peter Max after seeing his unique work while I was on a cruise ship this fall. This book is full of images of Peter Max's colorful works of art and it discusses his life story as well. It costs an additional $20 at stores. I decided to wait it out, and order it online. It was worth it.

4 out of 5 stars Quality assured.......2006-08-10

This edition I had was printed in Japan, notwithstanding the quality of the prints, pages and the cover were stunning!

Unfortunately I was hoping for more of Peter Max's psychedelic artwork & merchandise which he was most remembered for, as the book featured most his more recent paintings and his penchant for the Statue of Liberty & American icons. In fact I bought the book as a reference for 60s color scheme & rock posters but retro artwork added up to abt 30 odd pages out of the 240...

I'm thinking contemporary fine-art artists/lovers might take to this book with more enthusiasm than illustrators or graphic designers, despite this, the book still manages to inspire me with Max's whimsical use of paint colors and his contribution to society.

4 out of 5 stars Max's artwork in book form.......2006-02-19

A "grand" book. well published with quality photos and appropriate writing. Such work indeed required large format hardback. well worth the investment

      Book Description

Peter Jason Riley is a CPA who for many years has practiced in the Boston area. His book opens with basic material that applies to everyone, offering a roadmap through today's tax landscape and general discussions of different types of income, various kinds of expenses and IRS-allowed tax deductions. Following are the chapters that deal with the specific tax situation relevant to each category of artist. These range from the cost of acting lessons and makeup through depreciation of guitars and the maintenance of home studios to income from teaching jobs and royalties. In the final sections of the book, Riley considers various ways performers and other arts professionals can reduce their taxes, explains how to prepare for an audit, and suggests ways to locate, evaluate, choose and effectively work with a professional arts-oriented tax advisor.

      Customer Reviews:

3 out of 5 stars Not too helpful for fine artists.......2005-03-22

Though the author is clearly well informed about tax strategies, this book doesn't sufficiently address the needs of fine artists. The book seems to make the assumption that careers in the fine arts are straightforward. The book includes sections for specific disciplines, but those are not very in-depth. I did not get much more information from this book than I got from a general tax guide.

5 out of 5 stars Succinct, accessible, superbly presented information.......2002-07-12

The New Tax Guide For Artists Of Every Persuasion: Actors, Directors, Musicians, Singers, And Other Show Biz Folk, Visual Arts And Writers is an essential, core reference for anyone who makes their living in any aspect or field of the performing arts, the visual arts, or the literary arts. If any part of your taxable income is derived from the arts, then The New Tax Guide For Artists Of Every Persuasion is an invaluable reference for you -- even if you have already engaged the services of public accountants and financial managers to assist you.

        Book Description

The Stenberg brothers, like their contemporaries Aleksandr Rodchenko and El Lissitzky, were artists of immensely varied interests and eclectic skills. They were sculptors, architects, and stage and costume designers, and were enamored of the film and montage theories developed in the suddenly burgeoning Soviet film industry. As seen in this book's superb colorplates, they brought to film poster design an extraordinary compositional dynamism, originality, and contrast of scale, employing many of the artistic conventions of the Constructivist movement to great effect.

        Customer Reviews:

        5 out of 5 stars A graphic artists'MUST HAVE reference........2000-09-03

There have been many great graphic artists in the past several decades. In my opinion, The Stenberg Brothers produced some of the finest graphical works of art in this Century. The Stenberg Brothers lived and produced their Art in 1920's...and 1930's. Fueling the Soviet propaganda machine. Look beyond the thorns of the Soviet era propaganda machine. If you are a true graphic artist, you will definately appreciate the fantastic talents of the Stenberg Brothers and Soviet-era art. The Stenbergs were Masters of the Graphic Arts. This book should not be listed as a "book". Rather, it should be listed as an artists' portfolio. This "portfolio" of Soviet artwork is a MUST for everyone with an interest in appreciating the graphic arts. The Stenberg Brothers were truly MASTERS of their medium. This BOOK is packed FULL of high quality, premium-paper-stock reproductions of the best works these brothers have ever produced. I recommend it wholley!

4 out of 5 stars A great look at early Soviet-era poster design.......1999-09-23

While mostly confined to the movie posters that the Stenberg Brothers produced in the early years of the Soviet Union, this book still includes enough general history to help the reader view them in the context in which they were produced. Well-illustrated (most illustrations are in full color) with easy to comprehend text, this would be a valuable volume for anyone interested in graphic design. It will also appeal to students of the Constructivist movement.

        Book Description

This text will strengthen a student's ability to apply the laws of physics to practical situations and problems that yield more easily to intuitive insight than to complex mathematics. These problems, chosen almost exclusively from classical (non-quantum) physics, are posed in accessible nontechnical language and require the student to select the right framework in which to analyze the situation. The book will be invaluable to undergraduates preparing for "general physics" papers. Some physics professors will even find the more difficult questions challenging. The mathematical prerequisites are minimal and do not go beyond elementary calculus. This intriguing book of physics problems will prove instructive, challenging and fun.

        Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Challenging problems for honors physics students.......2001-09-24

The problems are generally at the level of International Physics Olympiad competitions or higher, and are very suitable for freshman/sophomore honors physics courses. The problems are tough and very interesting, with many unique and unusual twists, guaranteed to challenge even the best students preparing for physics competitions at the senior high school and undergraduate levels. I would guess that those sitting for PhD qualifying exams will have difficulties with some of the problems. The surprise is that the solutions require no more than elementary calculus, although lots of original critical thinking and insight are necessary.

Gnadig and Honyek are both leading the Hungarian physics olympiad teams for many years, while Riley is a Fellow of Clare College, University of Cambridge. Riley had a previous equally interesting but slightly less difficult problem book called "Problems for Physics Students," covering quite a few interesting Cambridge Natural Sciences Tripos and entrance exam type questions for the best UK high school students.

If you are a physics buff, you will derive countless hours of enjoyment (and frustration - if you resist the temptation of looking at the provided solutions too soon), plus it will bring your understanding of classical physics to a deeper level.

A few other worthy physics problem books include Thomas & Raine's "Physics to a Degree" for undergraduates, and Dendy's "Cambridge Problems in Physics" for high school students aiming for Cambridge University entrance. The Russian books "Problems in General Physics" by Irodov and "Problems in Elementary Physics" by Bukhovtsev are very good too but they may be harder to find. An upcoming excellent (and tough) classical mechanics problem book is David Morin's Physics 16 course text at Harvard - still in its draft form but downloadable from Harvard website.

        Book Description

Showcasing selected works from The Museum of Modern Art's superlative architecture and design collection, Objects of Design features a wide variety of industrial and domestic artifacts by great designers of the modern period, from early masters such as Hector Guimard, Frank Lloyd Wright and Josef Hoffmann to contemporary practitioners including Droog Design, Ettore Sottsas, Gaetano Pesce, Hella Jongerius and others. Some of the objects represent turn-of-the-century designs of the Vienna Secession, Art Nouveau and the Arts and Crafts movement; others are Bauhaus and de Stijl explorations; still others show Charles and Ray Eames and other American designers of the second half of the 20th century; representations of the Italian design revolutions; and contemporary manifestations of familiar genres using radical new materials and techniques of manufacture. The book's 360 color plates not only reveal the range of aesthetic viewpoints in design since the late 19th century but together trace the historical development of the Museum's celebrated design collection. In the introductory essay, Paola Antonelli, Curator, Department of Architecture and Design at The Museum of Modern Art, explores the history of modern design as well as the story of the museum's collection and its influence on the history of modern and contemporary design itself.

        Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Objects of Design from The Museum of Modern Art.......2004-04-18

MoMA canonized modern design as it did 20th-century art, and this anthology of pictures and expert texts highlights a collection of 3,708 objects that range in size from microchips to a helicopter. About a tenth of those are illustrated in nine thematic sections. Many are icons, but there are a few surprises, especially among recent acquisitions, where the inventive use of materials supplants functional beauty. Paola Antonelli, MoMA Curator of Architecture and Design, describes the collection as presenting a history of ideas and realizing a part of Alfred Barr's dream of a unity of the arts. She explains how the old selection criteria of truth and beauty have changed while retaining some of their old authority. It's comforting to know that relativism does not yet extend to firearms, making MoMA's collection a gun-free zone. (Michael Webb is the book reviewer for LA Architect magazine.)

        4 out of 5 stars A good series.......2004-05-19

Discusses the life cycle of humans and other mammals, plants, insects, frogs, reptiles, and birds. The concept of fertilization is not mentioned and the sexes are only alluded to once where a cat that had kittens was noted to be a she. In the discussion of reptiles, it seems all snakes can lay eggs based on this sentence. "When a reptile such as a snake is fully grown, it can also lay eggs." That seems a little too vague. The text asks the reader simple questions and provides answers at the back of the book. Life Cycles includes a simple glossary, bibliography, and index. Other entries in this series rate five stars, such as "Plants" and "Changing Forms." Karen Woodworth-Roman, Children's Science Book Review
