Book Description

The San Francisco Chronicle called Micky Knight, `one of the most hard-boiled and complex female detectives in print today.` Kirkus Reviews claims, `Redmann has the makings of a landmark series.` Death By The Riverside is where it all began. Long out of print, the first adventure of Micky Knight introduces this sardonic and steamy New Orleans private detective and leads us into her world. `I suppose I should have known that tasteful blondes like her didn`t traipse down to my part of town and hire me to find their missing fiances. And I did have a feeling that she was going to lead me astray. I just thought that it was a direction I`d like to stray in. Now two very bad things have happened to me -- a lot of not nice men are pointing guns in my direction and I think I`ve fallen in love.`

I found that this book held my attention and left you wanting more and not able to put it down for long periods. A good author for those who are not true book worms like myself.

5 out of 5 stars REAL SUBSTANCE.......2003-09-02

If you are getting bored reading the same old tired detective/mystery stories, pick up the Mickey Knight series. As a previous reader wrote, you'll find mystery, romance, comedy, steamy sex, and plenty of action in the Mickey Knight novels. The author has created a strong character with depth, who is very human and vulnerable. Let me say this: MICKEY IS NO WIMP! The supporting characters are richly developed throughout the series and you'll care about them all. The author makes you feel as though you're moving through New Orleans with Mickey. I loved all 4 books and can't wait to see what comes next. Don't miss this top notched series. It is THE BEST written detective series featuring a lesbian.

5 out of 5 stars Here comes Micky Knight.......2003-08-10

It's all here murder, mayhem, hot sex and beautiful women. This is the first in a series of four murder/suspense/mysteries featuring PI Michelle Knight. From the beginning when Knight is hired to help Karen Wentworth expose her ex-fiance, who is dancing at a gay bar, I was hooked. We have a police detective, an assistant DA and a doctor all linked to Mickey in some way and very important to the plot. Redmann knows New Orleans and shares it with us, albeit the seamier side. The story moves and takes the reader with it. We care what happens to our PI and her friends and the people who get pulled into the criminal happenings. Watch what happens with Cordelia James and her involvement with the happenings. And then read Deaths of Jocasta, The Intersection of Law and Desire, and Lost Daughters.
It's time for another Micky Knight book. Top drawer!

5 out of 5 stars A lesbian mystery that is also great literature.......2002-12-05

This book (and the other three in this series) are the best written mysteries I've read. The characters are well developed, the plot is twisted and interesting, and the psychological drama is intense. This is a dark story that goes far beyond the plot of a simple cliff-hanger mystery.

5 out of 5 stars Death by the Riverside.......2002-10-17

Redmann's character development and plot were excellent. I could not put the book down. It's a true page turner that has you guessing and surprised around every corner. Not since Patricia Cornwell's 'Kay Scarpeta' series have I been so entertained. After finishing this, the first in the series of 'Micky Knight' mysteries, I immediately had to order the following three.

5 out of 5 stars Best Mystery Series Out There.......2006-04-17

This is without a doubt my favorite series of books out there. They are from top to bottom the most thought out and intriguing series I have ever read and I am SO glad that they have reprinted them so others can see what I have seen for years...JM is a great artist. I am reviewing this one in the series because it is my favorite. When this book picks up we know that Micky and Cordelia have spent a night of passion together but nothing much has come of it because they live in different worlds Cordelia is a sucessful Dr and heir to mucho money who is not very out to those around her while Micky is a semi-successful, slutty, and out private eye who struggles with the nightly question of whether to pay rent...feed the cat...or drink herself into a stupor. They have to come together to try and solve a series of murders that have Cordelia looking like the prime suspect. Along with their friends (the lawyer..the detective..the political "flunkie") they seek to answer the questions of who did it and why before time runs out. This book is filled with well written and funny dialog (and in a rare turn of events with lesbian fiction GOOD SEX scenes that don't bog down the story). I suggest that you read the Death by the Riverside book first since it is the 1st in this series but make sure once you read it to not forget to pick up this one and enjoy a really spectatular ride!

5 out of 5 stars READ IT FOR YOURSELF!.......2003-09-02

A previous reviewer must have forgotten that some people want to read fiction to be drawn away from the world of reality. Not everyone wants to be entertained by reality and solve world problems. Mickey Knight is exciting, moody, funny, sexy, strong, vulnerable, and TUFF, and the author develops the characters throughout the series. You will care about her and the other characters too. The story is full of action, mystery, romance with steamy romantic sex and just plain sex. Remember, this is the story of a street smart PI, so don't let an occasional bit of not so sexy talk from a sex scene make you miss this great series. It is one of 'THE BEST' written detective series featuring a lesbian. If you only read stories about perfect characters, with "NORMAL" everyday problems, who have perfect sex and during sex never talk the least bit dirty, then maybe you need to SpIcE up your reading with a little Mickey Knight! I say try the book for yourself and walk thru the streets of NEW ORLEANS with Mickey.

5 out of 5 stars Hooked on Mickey Knight.......2003-01-24

I ordered the book "Death by the Riverside" on a whim. After reading it, I knew I was hooked on Mickey Knight. "Deaths of Jocasta" was simply a fabulous story. The author displays an incredible sense of humor, but yet, there were times when I could have cried for Mickey as she struggled through issues and addictions. The mystery held my attention, but the parts that I really enjoyed were the explorations of relationships and friendships within this novel. I would have to say that this book is one of the best I've ever read, and look forward to reading the next two books by this author. I am keeping my fingers crossed that there is a fifth book in progress.

5 out of 5 stars Two mysteries rolled into one........2002-09-05

Kudos to JM Redmann for writing another wonderful installment in the Micky Knight series. "The Deaths of Jocasta" is much more than the case Micky has been hired to investigate. Not only is the reader treated to a well-written mystery and realistic plot, but the dark past of Micky slowly unfolds throughout the book as she gives up alcohol and casual sex. Micky essentially fights her inner battle alone when her closest friends question her ability to remain sober and celibate. She doesn't know if they are friends or foes.

Will Micky be able to figure who is behind the threatening letters and shocking deaths of women before she becomes a victim herself? Will Micky be able to become lovers with Cordelia without putting her foot in her mouth? Will Danny reconcile her hurt feelings towards Micky for their failed relationship after college? Read this book yourself to find the answers to these and other questions. You certainly won't regret it!

5 out of 5 stars Micky Knight is back. Laissez les bons temp rouler!.......2002-04-21

The thirty years old, Barnard educated and underemployed, out lesbian, private investigator, Micky Knight has accepted a job overseeing security for a very exclusive and "festive" annual party hosted by Emma Auerbach. Of an old money New Orleans family, Emma has been a friend and mentor to Mickey for years. Sober and celibate for over six weeks, Micky is beginning to face the demons from which the liquor and sex allowed her to hide for over a decade. Although determined to remain sober, Micky does hope the weekend party brings an end to her loneliness, especially when the good doctor, Cordelia James arrives. Micky lost her heart to Cordelia months ago, during the events of "Death by the Riverside." But Emma's annual gay-la ends abruptly when the body of a young woman is found in the woods on her estate and everyone returns to the city.

At loose ends back in New Orleans, Micky goes to the library to check out some Dorothy Sayers books. "Some of her Lord Peter Wimsey books, not so much for detective ideas, but for dating tips." About which Micky concludes, "via Lord Peter, the method for making a woman fall in love with an offbeat detective was to save her from the gallows by proving her innocent. Somehow that didn't seem to have much bearing on Cordelia and myself." (p55). Of course, Lord Peter is right!

Life is complicated for Micky and company. More bodies show up near Cordelia's clinic. When they turn out to be young women who were patients at the clinic, the police see Cordelia as the prime suspect. Cordelia decides to hire Micky to investigate. Meanwhile an uncharacteristically restless, NOPD Detective Sgt., Joanne, increasingly angered by these events, is spending more time with Micky. Joanne senses Micky has similar ghosts in her past.

With the same tough, first-person voice of the first Micky Knight novel, Redmann directs the fast paced action of "Jocasta." Micky tracks down leads connecting the pasts of several characters with the current events. And the truth turns out to involve a dangerous combination of extremists --who justify murder in the name of life-- and people who crave old-fashioned, hateful revenge. Will Micky be able to take Lord Peter's advice?

Redmann presents serious and painful issues without hiding the pain, becoming pedantic, or losing her sense of humor. Her characters are well rounded, interesting women who deal authentically with their problems. One of the most impressive examples of this is Redmann's handling of child sexual abuse. Accurate and realistic, the depictions of the abuse and its ramifications run a spectrum of forms, parental reactions, and consequences from Micky to Joanne to Cordelia. This thread actually evolves throughout the Micky Knight novels as Micky has the opportunity to grow and heal.

This re-release of "Deaths of Jocasta" by Bella Books is a must for mystery lovers and in this reader's opinion, the covers of "Jocasta" and "Riverside" are the best Bella has produced to date. Ten years have passed since "Jocasta" was originally published. It is pinned to the early 1990s by technology --the lack of cell phones and email via the world wide web-- and Joanne's early adolescence (and rest of the crowd's ages in relation to her) is set prior to the Roe v. Wade decision (1973). However, the issues of the novel are very relevant today and Redmann treats the women struggling to survive them with respect and dignity. "Deaths of Jocasta" does not answer all the mysteries hovering in Micky's background. For that, readers should look for "The Intersection of Law and Desire" and "Lost Daughters," in order. Take Micky Knight home with you and laissez les bons temp rouler!

5 out of 5 stars Finally this one is in paperback!.......2006-04-25

Finally this book is back in print. I read a friend's hardback copy, thinking the paperback would be out in a year or two. That was over five years ago. I was introduced to Micky Knight when
I picked up a mass market copy of THE INTERSECTION OF LAW AND DESIRE about ten years ago and looked for more books. Since the first two books were out of print, I waited for the next book in the series.
This excellent book about mothers and daughters kept me reading until my eyes wouldn't stay open. I finished it the following morning. Micky Knight has been described as "hard-boiled" by some reviewers, but I think that tough-veneered is a better description. In fact, she is extremely vulnerable. what I like most about Micky is that she doesn't just tackle ordinary crimes and shoot people and kick butt. Yes she does shoot a time or two, but it is usually not an easy thing for her and is almost always in self-defense and when she kicks butt, she doesn't bother to take names. Without giving away the plot, let me say this book is about daughters looking for their mothers -- including Micky.
Redmann writes complex plots and well-developed characters. There is a cast of friends beginning with Micky's lover Cordelia, and her ex-lover assistant DA Danielle Clayton (and her life-partner, Elly) Police Sargent Joanne Ranson and her life-partner Alex, Micky's cousin drag-queen Torbin and his life-mate Andy. We were introduced to them in the first of four mysteries and we learn a little more about them as the series progresses. There are some less likeable recurring characters, especially Micky's Aunt Greta and her despised cousin Bayard.
Micky Knight is a complex, usually likeable woman who cares deeply about others. If you haven't already read this book,do so. And read the three other Micky Knight books.

5 out of 5 stars All of the Micky Knight books are fabulous.......2003-03-14

and it's a crying shame that they are not kept affordably in print--for one thing, it deprives Redmann of some very well earned revenue. In many ways, this 4th installment of Micky's adventures reads like the natural conclusion to the cycle of investigations opened by the first volume in the series, when we were introduced to a tough and beautiful lesbian babe-magnet with a smart mouth and endless compassion for those in trouble. She's physical (and even promiscuous--but the series is about how she gets tamed), she's achingly vulnerable, she's noble, she's got demons. Only in Lost Daughters do we meet her settled into a proper relationship, so the angst quotient is considerably lower than in the other books. Still, the conclusion to her search for her mother is unbelievably touching, and handled with just the right measure of reserve. Much as I'd love to see more of her, I wonder whether Redmann (whose website, ominously, appears to have vanished from cyberspace) is finished with her adventures. If she is, I just pray that she has another heroine in reserve for us to cheer on. Like the Meg Darcy books, with their lovingly depicted St. Louis locales, the Mickey Knight stories set us in a believable New Orleans, with its social strata, its weather, its flavors and smells.

5 out of 5 stars Gorgeous Cajun woman.......2002-09-17

I have all of the Mickey Knight series and i am hungry for more. As an avid reader of true crime, authors like Ann Rule, Roy Hazelwood etc, i was surprised at how well written these books were. I couldnt put them down.
Come on Ms Redman when is the next one coming out ???
Mickey Knight is brilliant. The storyline typical of the deep south and its age old mystery and the book seems to drag you willingly into the depths of its darkened corridors. The women appear real, not wishy washy like most lesbian heroines. The plot seems to easily weave its way through the book yet it keeps you on the edge of your seat waiting to see just what is about to happen next. I have spent many a sleepless night reading these books. I just couldnt put them down once i started reading them. Oh for the tardis to take me to New orleans.

5 out of 5 stars Absolutely hooked!!.......2002-08-13

I only recently discovered Micky and have devoured all 4 novels over a span of 3 weeks. I adore hard-nosed Micky with all her foibles and weaknesses. Add to that an amazing cast of characters and you can't go wrong with this book or any of the previously published in the series. I recommend them all! I only pray that Ms Redmann keeps churning out more Micky Knight adventures. I, for one, am hooked! Bravo!

5 out of 5 stars The Search for Mom.......2002-07-31

Having read "The Intersection of Law and Desire" before reading any of the others, I found myself wanting a Micky Knight of my very own. Since I couldn't find any around I decided my only other option was to read the rest of the series. "Lost Daughters" was by far my favorite of the bunch.

Micky's off-hand comment to favorite cousin Torbin sets her off on a search for one mother while her being a lesbian is responsible for starting the search for another. But the search that means the most to her is the search for her own mother. In between digging through files and filling out forms, Micky is trying to discover who's killing young women - young lesbians - and how Suzanne Forquet fits into the picture.

The ending - and the book - is one you'll want to read more than once. Pick this book up while it's still available. I hope Ms. Redmann writes more about this lovely heroine and allows us to see how her story really ends.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars The plot has lots of twists.......2005-02-07

J.M. Redmann has four mysteries to her credit, all dealing with private detective Micky Knight, a New Orleans private eye. Her previous titles are: DEATH BY THE REVIERSIDE, DEATHS OF JOCASTA, and LOST DAUGHTER.

Micky (Michelle) Knight is a private eye, having arrived at that occupation through a series of tough life experiences. Micky is strong and beautiful, but is also vulnerable and sensitive, which makes her the perfect savior for abused children. When her friend's daughter, Cissy, stops smiling and begins having nightmares, Micky is suspicious. Patrick, Cissy's brother, tries to hire Micky with his paper money to find out who murdered little Judy Douglas, a classmate of Cissy's. Simultaneously Micky is working on a case with Karen, a cousin of Micky's girlfriend Cordelia, extricating her from a money lending scheme that stinks to high heaven. Is there a connection between the two cases? "'Someone invests fifty thousand dollars and a month later gets seventy thousand back. Wouldn't that make you curious?

Bill let out a low whistle, then nodded. 'Could it be legit?' I asked. 'Only if I could be the Pope, and I'm Jewish. Drugs, most likely. How did you hear about his?'

In the midst of Micky's own demons haunting her from her hellish past, she manages to not only piece together the puzzle of a grand pornography ring, but also works through her own problems by getting involved with a child psychologist with a penchant for sex, and by actually infiltrating the crime ring. Luckily, she enlists the help of the local police in her adventures. She is working solo, everyone is angry with her, and she is feeling very alone. But she ends up the heroine, after taking on a gang of thugs and saving the day for the women she loves the most.

J.M. Redmann is one heck of a writer. This tale is so gripping that the pages can't turn fast enough. Emotions are taut through most of the novel, and Redmann continually ratchets the action to a higher level. Character development is pivotal, and the plot has lots of twists. New Orleans jumps to life, as does the pain of child abuse, the loneliness of the gay lifestyle. Great!

5 out of 5 stars Sans Pereil.......2005-01-02

The Intersection of Law and Desire
This is a hefty book. I liked the weight of it before I even read the first page. When I finished it, I found that it had another kind of weight. I like books that have a lot going on in them, and this one is very busy. There's the plot: it's involved and twisty and dark, just like a good private detective novel should be. There's the setting: New Orleans, with all its seaminess and hints of things beneath the surface. There's the protagonist: Micky Knight, a character with things of her own stirring under the surface of toughness and independence. There's enough action to get the reader immersed and turning the pages. Oh, and there's a great ending, for those of us resigned to novels that somehow let us down in the final pages.
And there's the author: this is the best thing going on in this book. J.M. Redmann does not disappoint. She writes with great skill and it was a delight to relax and just read this book, knowing after the first pages that all of it, the plot, the setting, the characters, were in good hands. I didn't have to be distracted, wondering when I would first be let down, looking for the first hole, because there isn't one. This book does everything it sets out to do. Because the writer did such a good job, I could do mine, and simply enjoy reading.
Micky Knight is everything you expect from a "hard boiled" private eye. She has a world-weary cynicism, an idealism that balances against it, a hard past she'd like not to intrude upon her present, she has courage and determination, and a fear that what she does is never enough. She has a girlfriend too, a doctor who has more money, more family, more innocence, more of all the things that Micky doesn't have. Micky lives alone in a cheap apartment with a cat. She and Cordelia have exchanged keys and begun to mingle their friends together, but a lifetime of feeling like an outsider makes Micky wary of her own feelings.
Two cases present themselves and get intertwined. One involves Cordelia's cousin, and Micky reluctantly takes it on. One involves the children of a friend. It could be that Micky crosses the line in both these cases, gets too involved, when she might have walked away. When they become entangled, it could be that the complications are convenient for Micky, pulling her away from Cordelia until they are on the verge of splitting up. In an effort to save Cordelia's cousin Karen from herself, and to save the child Cissy, Micky goes undercover and very far into an underworld of drugs, prostitution, pornography, and also finds that all of her problems, the ones with her girlfriend, the ones with the criminal elements, are impacted by her past, complicated by her own confused desires.
I like this woman. She confronts people about issues that most would choose to ignore. She has a fine anger that simmers and sometimes boils over. Micky has a right to anger. Other emotions are less comfortable. She hasn't learned them yet. Her anger drives her to try to save at least those she knows from the kind of harm she has personally experienced. She knows the lasting effects, but knowing doesn't mean she has escaped them herself. Anger fuels her compassion, pushes her toward danger, wrecks her relationships, and finally rescues her from guilt and shame. Anger is a cleansing, simplifying emotion, not murky and fluid like love, which in Micky's mind is a changeable thing, slippery, unwieldy, bound to disappoint and betray.
From seedy, unsettling, dangerous bars where drugs and much worse are peddled, to the ultimate private clubs where essentially the same transactions occur, from her confused past to an even more confusing present where events happen at a terrifying speed, Micky Knight goes on a ride around New Orleans and winds up at an interesting place. Not everyone can be saved. Justice is not always served. But sometimes, just making the trip is enough.
This novel is a good trip to take. It has action, it has atmosphere, it has finely drawn and diverse characters, it has depth and style and it is polished and smooth.

Once again Ms. Redmann has out done herself. Micky takes us on a great ride. The twists and turns of her life are entertaining and thought provoking. This book is a great read and I couldn't put it down until I finished it at 2am! You won't be sorry you bought it but it helps to read the first two in the series.

Another terrific Mickey Knight adventure. I enjoyed the plot of "Jocasta" a bit better, but this was still a full, satisfying read. That is what makes the books so good - they have a meaty plot and substance. Too many 'tec stories rely a bit much on coincidence and thin plots.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Reading, A Real Page Turner.......2001-07-09

This was the first book of this Genre (Lesbian Detective) that I have read. I found this book to be intriguing and engrossing with a plot that explores what I feel is becoming a serious problem in this day and age, the subject of child sexual abuse and child pornography.

I found the character of Micky Knight to be delightful. Not what I was expecting from a hardcore detective. I was expecting her to be a hard drinking, heavy smoking, foul-mouthed type of PI. Definitley a surprise to find that she wasn't like this at all. Hardcore PI when necessary, yet, compassionate and intelligent. One thing in particular that I liked abou this book was the ability of Ms. Redmann to make the character of Micky Knight to be hardcore without the constant use of vulgar language. The few hardcore detective novels I have read in the past tend to use vulgar language to a point that almost every sentence contains some sort of explitive.

Ms. Redmann does an outstanding job of keeping the reader fooled throughout the book. Many times I thought that I had it all figured out only to be surprised a few pages or chapters later. Ms. Redmanns ability to describe things is also a plus. Having traveled to New Orleans on numerous occasions, I found her descriptions of the French Quarter and the West bandk areas to be very vivid and accurate.

Being the first book that I have read by Ms. Redmann, and not being one who reads a lot of hardcore detective stories, it would be very unfair of me to attempt to compare her to other authors. If you are looking for a detective novel that is different, but will keep you on your toes and guessing throughout, then this page turner is for you. Please don't judge it based on the grounds that the lead character is a Lesbian. I almost did and am now glad that I didn't. I plan on reading other books by Ms. Redmann.

    5 out of 5 stars Wow!!.......1998-11-06

I can't say enough about this book! I'll be first in line for the next one. A very human character, a great story, and enough loose ends to keep me coming back for more! Brava!!

4 out of 5 stars Great story, but it left a few too many loose ends!.......1998-10-20

I thought The Intersection of Law and Desire was a great read. Both my partner and I found it addicting and almost impossible to put down! However, I found the ending left a lot of loose ends, I HOPE this means a sequel will come out and tie them all up! (As we will be sure to buy it!)

5 out of 5 stars Micky's a complex woman who takes us on quite an adventure........1998-08-04

I read Intersection of Law and Desire first, since it's the one in the stores, then got Death By The Riverside from Amazon.com-fancy that. Micky is deep and disturbed in Death, but earned my respect. I believe in her ability, not to merely survive anymore, but to actually find some happiness, and am rooting for her all the way. It's great to see such a well developed, complex character come to us in Lesbian genre fiction-Redmann truly makes Micky (and the other pivotal characters) three dimensional, rather than the superficial characterizations we read too often. Micky has a lot going for her, and Redmann tantalizes us with just enough of Micky's stubbornly hidden sophistication to make us see what the women who love her see in her. The mystery sizzles in both books with complex plots, and the atmosphere is delightedly dark and haunting. We are almost transported to the bayou country; we can smell the food and feel the humidity in the air-I was swatting imaginary ! mosquitoes while reading in my air-conditioned home.

I wrote this review specifically to ask Ms. Redmann when we might make a return trip to New Orleans. I'd like to see how Micky and Cordelia are doing, and would love to get up to my neck in trouble with them again. I encourage Ms. Redmann to write!!

    4 out of 5 stars Slow start, but a great action/mystery novel!!!.......1998-07-27

In spite of its slow start, our group thought this was a worthwhile read! J.M. Redmann introduces Micky Knight, a lesbian detective with a past. We were drawn into both her personal and public life; we cared about what happened to her; and we loved the final action/adventure scenes that had her in a gunfight with a group of cutthroat rivermen who'd been selling sex with "throwaway" children. How can you go wrong with a butch detective who borrows cocktail dresses from her cross-dressing cousin so she can fit in at the most exclusive club in town?? Humor, misunderstandings, sex for sex sake, and difficult relationships joined the mix with child pornography, homophobia in the South, therapists who step over the line, and people who will do anything for money. There are so many facets to this book it would be difficult to summarize them all, but J.M. Redmann managed to put alot into this one! If you get hung up on the child pornography topic, as many in our group! did, stay with it, the story is well worth the trip! And oh yeah.... the sex scenes are hot! (you've been warned!) If you're looking for a mystery that has more than a whodunit plot or a detective who has more depth than Dick Tracy, and more character than Nancy Drew, check out Michelle "Micky" Knight in The Intersection of Law and Desire.
