4 out of 5 stars Really humourous book.......2000-05-16

Nightmare Abbey is absolutely wonderful for the most part. Love Peacock has a very witty and slightly subversive take on the concept of Romanticism. His attacks on the melancholy aspects of the period are especially amusing, the owner of Nightmare Abbey who only employs servants with depressing looks, and even more depressing names is brilliantly written. The only downside to the novel is the dialogue which I found quite difficult in comparison to the main narrative, but it was definately worth the effort.

5 out of 5 stars One of the most humorous books ever.......1999-11-10

This is easily one of the funniest books I have ever read. Two separate novels from one of the premier wits and classical scholars of the last century, both dealing with contemporary figures, mildly disguised, and contemporary issues.

If you find Gothic novels far too over the top, or delight in parody of the likes of Byron, Coleridge, and Shelley, you'll love this book, which includes touching descriptions of British landscape along with its heavy dose of good-natured mockery.

The introduction and footnotes are gems as well. If only the complete run of Peacock novels were in print in this fashion.

A must for anyone interested in Romanticism, British history, and good fun!

    Book Description

In the beginning of the sixth century, when Uther Pendragon held the nominal sovereignty of Britain over a number of petty kings, Gwythno Garanhir was king of Caredigion. The most valuable portion of his dominions was the Great Plain of Gwaelod, an extensive tract of level land, stretching along that part of the seacoast which now belongs to the counties of Merioneth and Cardigan. This district was populous and highly cultivated. It contained sixteen fortified towns, superior to all the towns and cities of the Cymry, excepting Caer Lleon upon Usk; and, like Caer Lleon, they bore in their architecture, their language, and their manners, vestiges of past intercourse with the Roman lords of the world. It contained also one of the three privileged ports of the isle of Britain, which was called the Port of Gwythno. This port, we may believe if we please, had not been unknown to the Phoenicians and Carthaginians, when they visited the island for metal, accommodating the inhabitants, in return, with luxuries which they would not otherwise have dreamed of, and which they could very well have done without; of course, in arranging the exchange of what they denominated equivalents, imposing on their simplicity, and taking advantage of their ignorance, according to the approved practice of civilized nations; which they called imparting the blessings of Phoenician and Carthaginian light. . . .

    Book Description

Peacock's retelling of the legend of Robin Hood is as fresh today as it was when he penned it, nearly two hundred years ago. Here are all the heroes and villains we know and love, recast by a keen Victorian wit. The heroes are heroic (and just a little self-serving, though generous) the villains are villainous (and greedy!); and the tale is told as keenly as it can be. Those who haven't read Peacock are in for a treat.

The baron was inflexible in his resolution not to let Matilda leave the castle. The letter, which announced to her the approaching fate of young Gamwell, filled her with grief, and increased the irksomeness of a privation which already preyed sufficiently on her spirits, and began to undermine her health. She had no longer the consolation of the society of her old friend Father Michael.

    4 out of 5 stars A Nice Read.......2006-01-08

This version of Robin Hood goes along pretty well with most of the traditional Robin Hood stories. One difference is that Robin, the Earl of Locksley and Huntington, actually squandered away his fortune and poached the King's deer for love of the hunt rather than out of necessity. His lands were then confiscated by King Henry and he was named outlaw for resisting arrest.
For those who like strong women characters, this Maid Marian (who's real name is Matilda) can use a sword, quarter-staff, and shoot a bow as well as Robin. She also loves to hunt and likes being out in Nature.
The only complaint I have is that some of the characters, Friar Tuck for instance, tend to be rather long winded. Other than that I enjoyed the book and recommend it to anyone interested in Robin Hood.

          Book Description

But when Marionetta hinted that she was to leave the Abbey immediately, Scythrop snatched from its repository his ancestor's skull, filled it with Madeira, and presenting himself before Mr Glowry, threatened to drink off the contents if Mr Glowry did not immediately promise that Marionetta should not be taken from the Abbey without her own consent.

Nightmare Abbey, a venerable family-mansion, in a highly picturesque state of semi-dilapidation, pleasantly situated on a strip of dry land between the sea and the fens, at the verge of the county of Lincoln, had the honour to be the seat of Christopher Glowry, Esquire. This gentleman was naturally of an atrabilarious temperament, and much troubled with those phantoms of indigestion which are commonly called blue devils.

              Book Description

1910. English poet and satirist, friend and biographer of Percy Bysshe Shelley, Peacock is best remembered as one of the great satirists of the Romantic period. Early in his writing career he made use of the Arthurian legends, mainly for satire, amusement, and instruction. This volume contains letters that Peacock wrote either to intellectual bookseller Thomas Hookham who introduced him to Shelley, or to Shelley himself.
