Payne's acclaimed first novel "Youth in Revolt" finds love-struck Nick Twisp still on the lam from the law and his parents. Our 14-year-old hero (and his multiplying alter egos) now must battle blizzards, back-stabbing aliens, vengeful parents, and school officials determined to schedule him into girls' gym. He conspires to play cupid, journeys south of the border on a secret mission, takes some gunplay lessons from his distraught mom, and still finds time to confide all to his diary while inadvertently wreaking havoc in cyberspace. A must-read for Nick Twisp fans.

5 out of 5 stars Wow..what can I say?.......2006-07-16

After reading "Youth in Revolt", I knew I had to pick up the next book. Thankfully, it was just as interesting as the first book. I was constantly on edge, as C.D. Payne made me feel as if I were Nick himself. I also found myself relating to everything Nick did for his love. This is a book to get people, the CRAZY ending will have you wanting more.

5 out of 5 stars Nick Twisp, you do surprise me.......2006-05-26

I confess I laughed as much from this book as from the first one. Frankly I'm mystified by the complaints of people who didn't like this one. Am I missing something? My friend who introduced me to Nick thinks some people expect a more realistic story. But with an author as imaginative as this guy, why would you want him to stick with realism. That's why I like Michael Connelly but he writes crime fiction. Reading Nick Twisp I'm just out for laughs. I look forward to more, since I hear there are two more books in the series to be published.

1 out of 5 stars Disappointing disaster.......2004-06-12

I can't believe after reading this 300 page book that I would come back to see only positive reviews for it! This sequel was so terrible and so ludicrous and overall a waste of my time. As a big, big fan of the first one (the first book I'd choose to read while in the bathroom) I didn't think a sequel was necessary nor possible. I was right.

The plot is so absurd and such a mess it seems to me that CD Payne was coerced into writing a sequel (or maybe he just wanted to profit some more) and never had an ending in sight so he found himself writing into plot holes that could never be resolved except with things too absurd even for Twispian universe standards. His prose is different in this one too. Whereas the first one starts you off with a clear and vivid description of Nick, his mom, Jerry, etc and the brilliant recaptures of his date with Sheeni with Jerry and his mom, to his spying on Lefty, to meeting Fuzzy and Apurva, this time it seems like the characters are forced to meet each other, and can't get out of their predicaments unless some Divine Intervention occurs. There is not a funny moment in this book; it just cycles into the absurd and introduces so many characters it becomes annoying. I know the pattern in the first book was the same too; Lefty is a major player in the first one then suddenly disappears as Fuzzy and Vijay take over the spotlight; in this one, you go from Connie (?!?!) to Dogo and back again.

But in this book, when CD Payne creates a new character, by what else, Plastic Surgery (What the F***??!), I couldn't believe it. Nick goes to Mexico to get plastic surgery? I mean, geez, dressing up as Carlotta is reasonable, but this is just retarded, even for the Twispian world. This book is just so unbelievabe, the characters don't even seem to believe what they are saying because Payne is lost and seems to have forgotten how these characters would talk; its just one absurdity after another--and not only is it absurd in general, it's contradictory that these old characters would do the same things (Paul is no longer as ominous and Vijay no longer as conniving. Could you imagine Sheeni from the first book saying the same things?). The first one is just flat out better--the dialogue and Tarantino-esque situations are genius yet believable at least.

Revolting Youth seems forced and that it was written by an aspiring 11th grader submitting something to his AP English teacher. Also, if you'll notice, the reviews on this book are FOR YOUTH IN REVOLT. Interesting that there's not a single praise for Revolting Youth on REVOLTING YOUTH ITSELF. The botton line is, the first one was pure classic, impossible to top, and this just proves it.

5 out of 5 stars Great Follow-Up!!.......2003-07-16

One of the wittiest books you'll ever read, except for possibly the fist one Youth In Revolt (which I highly recommend you read before this as this is obviously the continuation). Overall I'd say the 1st book is funnier and the 2nd book is more exciting. I tend to laugh a little less when the air gets charged with operations, gun shots, and high speed get aways.

That said you simply must read both books in their correct order. I have never laughed so much in my life. Sure, there is plenty of budding male sexuality in here, you could certainly say its one of the major themes, but the book is filled with so many relavent social and political references along with a stunning vocabulary that you simply allow the author to use this crazed 14 year old male as a vehicle for his humorous commentary. I have also been pleasantly surprised that all the women I've talked to have recommended these books to me (a male). This reinforces the notion that though Nick is a sex starved young male, females are also able to relate to Nick and Sheeni's sexuality, validating the book on yet another level.

Bravo! Funniest Books ever written!!!!

Emergent readers often have difficulty moving beyond the phonics aspect of reading, and Schulman gives the reading specialist many creative and practical ideas along with appropriate literacy selections for closing the gap between the emergent and fluent reader.

5 out of 5 stars Outstanding resource!.......2006-06-23

My district is implementing guided reading this school year. This book has been invaluable to me. It has helped me understand how to manage my classroom, so that my students will gain the most advantages from such a program. I am looking forward to returning this fall with this program in place. It is an extra bonus that the author is a teacher and has been in the same position.

4 out of 5 stars Great Guide!.......2005-09-08

A great resource for getting your guided reading program started. User friendly and has reproducibles in the index.

5 out of 5 stars Guided Reading will work for you!.......2001-09-23

This is a great book for any teacher using the four blocks literacy model in thier classroom. It is very readable, and not full of jargon. Examples of how to implement guided reading in your classroom are given throughout the book, and there are organization and management ideas offered as well. The book also contains photocopy pages which will be very helpful to you.

5 out of 5 stars Super Resource.......2001-07-27

This book is a wonderful resource for a classroom teacher using guided reading. It is similar to Guided Reading: Good First Teaching... but more reader friendly, not full of research etc. I would recommend this book for K-3 teachers. It compliments Guided Reading, An Observation Survey and On Solid Ground.

Book Description

"Jonathan Livingston Seagull as imagined by the Marx brothers." That's one take on "Frisco Pigeon Mambo," an uproarious new comic novel by C.D. Payne. When a flock of alcohol- and tobacco-addicted lab pigeons are liberated in San Francisco, the whole city turns topsy-turvy. Our feathered heroes dance into bars, stick up liquor stores, spy on socialites, swipe a van full of cats, and even dodge a murder rap. Soon they have a price on their heads, cops on their trail, beer on their breath, and amour on their minds. Call them "America's Most Wanted," but don't call them pigeons. These swashbuckling outlaws think they're human.

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars it's stupid, but it's fun..........2006-03-27

When some pigeons are 'liberated' from a San Fran lab they have one hell of a time adjusting to the outside world, especially as they think they are humans.

Narrated by Robin, one of the pigeons, this is a very silly book but written with such verve and vigour that you ignore the ludicrous plot devices and just revel in the fun.

Payne's plot jumps don't always take the reader along with them (on a couple of occasions characters seem to come out of nowhere) but that is a minor gripe.

Pure escapism, sit back and enjoy.

5 out of 5 stars Loved It!.......2003-06-30

As a resident of SF, I found the book absolutely hysterical. It's a must read for anyone who has ever lived or loved in this city.

5 out of 5 stars Hilarious homage to San Francisco.......2002-02-28

Note: It would be helpful to be familiar with "The Maltese Falcon" before reading this book. A familiarity with San Francisco and the area also helps greatly.

The first few pages of this book didn't immediately capture me, but I slogged through, and it was worth it: This book is funny! Even if you hate pigeons, or don't want to hear a story from an animal's point of view, if you are an intelligent person, read this book! Payne's vocabulary continues to astound, and he is the master of unexpected plot twists. He'll have you seeing things from a bird's eye view in no time. Even if these birds weren't convinced that they were human, I have a feeling they'd still think they were pretty hip, continuing to trash talk, sleep around, smoke and drink. They're living the life some people dream about! ...

5 out of 5 stars Just the thing when you need a funny book!.......2001-09-16

I read this hilarious tale in less than two days, it was just the thing I need to distract me from the horrible events of this week (9/11/01 terrorism attacks on US). I wasn't quite sure an author could pull off a whole book about pigeons who believed they were human, but Payne did it. Now to order Payne's other books....

5 out of 5 stars Read this! !.......2001-06-26

A funny VERY readable book. Payne is a clever writer and the whole storyline is superb. A writer that can make the concept of pigeons thinking that they are human, seem reasonable, has got to be read. It is a fast read, but highly entertaining. A perfect *summer* read, but fine for any month. If you want your lips to curl into a smile and then some giggles, read this one. Or stay sad....

Customer Reviews:

1 out of 5 stars A horribly disappointing book.......2007-05-27

This is a substandard sequel to Youth in Revolt and Revolting Youth. I was not able to get past page 25, because to go on would have only compounded the sadness and disappointment I felt at reading this dreck.

Characters: The first quibble I have is that none of the manic energy and hijinks that were present in the first two books are evident here. Nick and Sheeni are on the run, but there is no sense of urgency to indicate that. They're just sauntering around Paris, eating and seeing the sights. It doesn't add up.

The tone was totally different from the earlier two books. This volume takes place mere months after Revolting Youth. So how can we reconcile the fact that Nick goes from wondrous teen to old curmudgeon in such a short time? Yet another failing.

Story: The book focuses more on Paris than on the characters. The first two books were brilliant because the audience as if they were along for the ride. Not so here. It almost reads like a Midwestern tourist telling us about his trip abroad.

I cannot recommend this book to fans of the earlier Nick Twisp books.

3 out of 5 stars Not too shabby, a definate read for Twisp fans........2006-12-07

This book is a continuation Revolting Youth, which means of course, you shouldn't read this book unless you've read the previous. I agree, it started off great but 2/3 of the way it started to get really dull. I found myself not reading that part 100% just because it seemed very repetitive. Thats why I only gave it three stars, because a large section of the book moved verrryy..sllooowwwwlllyy...However! I'm satisfied with the ending. Even though some fans may disapproved, it ended righteously. I recommend it if your a fan of hese novels, for sure.

4 out of 5 stars Different from the other books, but not bad.......2006-11-28

If you read the other reviews, then you know the ending is not what a lot of people expected. The book starts off great, gets a little slow toward the middle, but picks back up toward the end. I thought it was pretty good, a huge surprize ending. I can relate to his feelings a lot, and I think other people can too. I recomend it!

4 out of 5 stars If it weren't for the ending...........2006-11-24

CD Payne has an interesting style, and if you're reading this review, I can only assume you've read the original "Youth in Revolt" which is an utter classic.

Nick Twisp begins life as an over-sexed nympho-like 14 year-old. He's older in Y&R but that doesn't mean he's matured. That's a good thing. Because what keeps this book enjoyable is the fact that Nick will always and forever be a fourteen year old sex addict. His outlook on life doesn't change drastically, and if it did we probably wouldn't like him nearly as much. Nick's always going to be a terribly misguided youth and that's his charm. His adventures are still vastly amusing, but nowhere near as madcap as his first adventure. Quite frankly, I miss François and Carlotta who appear briefly only. Payne gives it his best, but the ending is not that satisfying. It's more like an afterthought and that's short-changing the readers. Still this is a welcome return to the Land of Twisp.

5 out of 5 stars It ends well.......2006-09-10

Yes, it does not end how we wish, but I for one was totally satisfied with the ending of our favorite hero's saga. I personally don't think it could have concluded any other way. This is just as quirky as the previous books and there are a few laugh out loud moments. This novel is a totally worthwhile book and a must read for any Nick Twisp fan!

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars necessary reading of the whole series.......2007-01-10

As the reader, you travel an insane journey as you live vicariously through the books main character. You must start with the authors first book, YOUTH IN REVOLT,the journals of nick twisp to even begin to follow this incredible story. The author is a literary genious who is unbelievibly imaginative. This is a must read for all those 80's and 90's kids who are sure to relate to at least one of the characters. Five Stars for the whole series!

4 out of 5 stars Clone of Twisp.......2006-11-24

CD Payne has an interesting style, and if you're reading this review, I can only assume you've read the original "Youth in Revolt" which is an utter classic. You need to read it and every other book in the series in order -- otherwise you just won't get this particular tome.

Nick Twisp begins life as an over-sexed nympho-like 14 year-old. In this novel we meet his (much) younger brother who is also an over-sexed 14 year old. Nice to know all the Twisps are virtual clones of each other.

That leads us on to Revoltingly Young which is entertaining as hell. It's closer to the first book than any of the subsequent novels and my constant chuckles had my neighbours on the plane giving me suspicious looks out of the corners of their eyes. It's a rehash of previous books in one way -- you won't be surprised at anything you read because you've seen it all before but sometimes an old comfortable pair of shoes is just what's needed. My biggest complaint about this book is that when Nick makes a cameo -- and his brief appearance can only be called that -- as a 30 year old adult, quite frankly he's not likeable. It would have been better if he hadn't been included. My other complaint is that ending feels terribly rushed and deux-ex-machina, which even the author hints at in a smug, self-satisfied way. Clearly Payne didn't know how to end his novel, so he threw and ending together. The charm of writing journal style means you don't have to contrive an ending.

4 out of 5 stars IRREVERENT, ENTERTAINING & FUN ****.......2007-03-25

As far as characters go, Nick Twisp is the best adolescent character since Holden Caulfield. I'd actually say he's smarter, funnier, hipper, sexier -- someone I'd like to drive across the states with, just for the hysterical laughs. So, it's worth reading this book for his voice alone so it's definitely recommended.

One caveat. There's a lot of repetition here and the plot is not exactly tight. Read it to fall in love with this kid, not for twists and resolutions. It's loads of laughs and the protagonist is one of the best I've ever read for his bold humor and irreverent sexual impulses. Get it.

5 out of 5 stars The Funniest Book I have Ever Read!.......2007-01-25

My husband (at the time boyfriend) gave me this book when I had been hoping for a ring. Anyway, this was almost as good! Which makes it, in a girls world, pretty awesome. I have read it through 3 times. I keep laughing. I have given it to my dad, my sister, numerous friends, my book club-everyone thinks it is hilarious and they too dub it the funniest book they have ever read.

The book starts out with Nick Twisp at 14, an unusually precocoious teen, and he has been grounded (again). This is a pattern throughout the book, which charts his rebellion against his parents, all the while trying to lose his virginity. While his tastes are not terribly discriminating in his quest, his one goal is to be with his one true love, Sheeni Saunders, who in her own right is quite devious and unusually intelligent.

I think Nick must have the worst parents in the world, and his interactions described between them are some of my favorite parts.

While reading this book, I felt like I was on a vacation I didn't want to end, but I could not put the book down. There is a sequel called Revolting Youth, which is still entertaining, but moves out of the realm of reality.

5 out of 5 stars youth in revolt.......2006-11-02

awesome book read it 3 times after I got it.!! a must read!!

3 out of 5 stars "Watch your smart mouth!".......2006-07-09

I picked up "Youth in Revolt" at the used bookstore and paid two dollars for it. I'm kind of glad now that I did. Don't get me wrong--Nick (the narrator) is a witty smart aleck, and his journal is very entertaining. I have to admit I laughed. A lot. The author has a scathing sense of humor. But that being said, Nick's not all that likeable. In his obsessive quest to be with the woman of his dreams (Sheeni), he manipulates everyone around him. He kind of reminds me of a miniature military strategist. He's got a goal in mind (it's the same goal, my husband says, that every 14 year old boy has in mind), and he'll do whatever he has to do to achieve it. Even when he's burned down half of Berkeley, framed the local football star, or led an accomplice to attempt suicide, he shows no shred of remorse.
It's a fun book, I won't lie. And you'll love Nick's smart mouth. Just don't expect to like Nick.

5 out of 5 stars Witty & Poignant.......2006-06-26

In his first novel, C.D. Payne proves himself capable of appealing to men & women alike who can relate to a past filled with misunderstood, awkward teen angst. I laughed hysterically and couldn't put it down. Recommended to anyone looking for something witty and fun to read ... Love it.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars great book.......2001-09-12

by far one of the funniest and best written books i've ever read. payne does a great job of getting into the mind of a 14 year old. the book flows great, with so much going on at one time, much like real life, yet with adventures that could never be imagined by a normal mundane mind. seriously a great book.

3 out of 5 stars For hardcore fans only.......2001-08-14

The format of this book is completely ludicrous: it's basically everything cut from "Youth in Revolt" ... up on the page with no context. Everything from two sentences to two pages of cut text is in here introduced only by a "from page X, after words "xxx xxx" in literally hundreds of little excerpts. Imagine if you made a film out of all the scenes that ended up on the cutting room floor -- it makes about that much sense. The only way to truly make sense of this mess is to re-read your copy of "Youth in Revolt" and use this as a companion (which would mean switching books every other page). HOWEVER, if you have read YIR recently, you can somehow make sense of things and it's not totally confusing. And, thankfully, most of the passages function more as stand-alone amusing little anecdotes that were cut for obvious reasons, since they did little to drive the plot. Many, fortunately, don't suffer too much from a lack of context. Thankfully, Payne's wit is enough to make this an enjoyable read for hardcore fans. Be that as it may, the format is just generally annoying, dropping you into situations for a minute or five minutes and you never know quite where you are. Anyone but C.D. Payne cultists should steer clear.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Simple and Practical.......2002-08-23

This book helps with getting started in an interactive writing program. It contains tips for setting up the shared writing area, sample dialogues for the 3 included grades (K-2), schedule examples, word wall and other environmental print ideas, and a really neat diagram that breaks down all of the skills that can be touched on with questioning ideas. A nice bonus is a section on encouraging parent involvement at home. This book gives you the basics to get the program going without going in depth into theories.

4 out of 5 stars Practical guide.......2000-10-27

Contains a number of very good suggestions not only for the classroom, but for those of us at home who use a message board and are looking to maximize the time we have with the kids.

5 out of 5 stars An excellent book for developing young writers.......2000-07-11

The authors have provided an easy-to-read book for teachers who want to help students in primary grades (K-2) develop writing skills. Excellent for beginning teachers who need a starting point and for veteran teachers who want to continue to improve writing instruction. Filled with examples, actual lessons and management ideas that illustrate the "power" of shared writing.

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Very funny read, but..........2002-03-28

This book was quite ammusing and I did enjoy it. My only problem with this book is that C.D. Payne has women characters that are somewhat vindictive and very manipulative. I found the characters in civic beuties to be a little to manipulative. I would recommend this book, but with a condition...READ YOUTH IN REVOLT FIRST, so you can see this author at his very best.

1 out of 5 stars So boring...........2001-11-30

I loved Youth in Revolt, which made me laugh a lot, but this book was so boring that I didn't even read the last 50 pages - and that hardly ever happens to me.

3 out of 5 stars Disappointing.......2001-10-23

I loved "Youth in Revolt" and "Revolting Youth", and so I guess I had very high expectations of this book. After only about 50 pages I found myself struggling to continue. It isnt a bad book, but is definitely missing something when you compare it to the brilliance of the aforementioned titles.

4 out of 5 stars Funny!.......2001-05-30

CD Payne can make you laugh out loud at his style of writing. I love how you can figure out what happened, without him having to say so.

4 out of 5 stars stay away from twins.......2001-01-05

The Twisp books show us how destructive teenagers can be. Civic Beauties shows up how their destructive power is multiplied with twinship.

Book Description

Welcome to the Kingdom of America, where a crisis in succession imperils the 220-year reign of the Washington royal family. Into the breach steps a lovely descendant of King George Washington I. She may become America's first queen--if she can overcome the forces conspiring against her. In this fanciful rewriting of history, athletes in royal America play polo on pogo sticks, tourists queue up to tour opulent palaces, and behind every tree lurks a Canadian spy.

3 out of 5 stars Interesting Play.......2002-07-08

This was a very amusing an enjoyable play. However, the quality of humor and style does not nearly match Payne's other works, such as Youth in Revolt. It also appears to have been written all in one sitting and not to have been edited: it reads somewhat like a skit written for a High School class. It is, however, worth reading because of the funny lines and its shortness. It can be read in about 30-60 minutes flat.
