Learn about yourself with insightful tools.......2007-04-27
I've taken personality tests before as part of my college entrance exam and for work and to be honest most were outdated, general and at times mind-boggling. Authors Paul Tieger and Barbara Barron put a stop to these confusing tests as they pool their years of expertise and share their knowledge in their revised and updated, Do What You Are.
Readers will walk away with a thorough understanding of the sixteen personality types and correlating job fields that will enable readers to preview recommended career choices and learn how these personality types apply to their field of choice.
As I read Do What You Are I especially enjoyed one area: Part Two: The Formula for Career Satisfaction. In this section of the book the authors explain that while our basic personality type doesn't change, the ability to access all type preferences does change, and it is in this process, which happens naturally, that most of us allow ourselves the opportunity to become a well-rounded person. Simply stated, we age, experience life, and mature.
Another key element is realizing that we may choose jobs based on pressure. As the authors state, "Pressure to be what you aren't can cause lifelong confusion. If you are obliged to fit into a certain group mentality that really doesn't suit you (this could be a family dynamic, a school or community setting or a professional environment), you may end up denying your true nature and not enjoying your required role." How many of us have fallen into that trap? Our parents want us to be doctors or lawyers yet we yearn to be an architect so we spend years in jobs we hate to gain acceptance from those we love.
All in all, Do What You Are is an excellent reference tool that can be used over and over, year after year. So whether you're getting ready to graduate high school and are trying to figure out what to study or whether you're contemplating a job change, I think you'll find every aspect of this book helpful and insightful.
Armchair Interviews says: Helpful information for many aspects of your life.
A ray of hope in the darkness of chaos..........2007-04-21
An invaluable guide, written in an easy to understand and conversational style. I have used this book often - for myself and also to guide others. It helps to know your type before hand - however - even if you dont, the book will help you figure it out.
The tips the authors have given on ascertaining the personality type are extremely useful: "if you are not sure how to answer or make a choice - ask yourself what would you rather do or be." This helps you get off the hook - when you struggle with I think I am an 'I', but behavior wise it feels like an 'E'. This they have done for each of the 4 dimensions.
I have read several books on MBTI; however - found this one to be of the most value in identifying natural fit careers as part of my coaching work.
Very highly recommended - read it early!
Advisable information.......2007-04-18
Well this book is good but not good enough. Because it truly puts you in a category and provides you suitable careers according to your personality type, i.e., what careers you'd possibly find enjoyable based on the functioning of your brain.
But each type offers varied fields of career. For example, as in my INFP type, you could be an actor as well as a psychological counselor. That means you have to pounder into what your abilities and interests are before you can find the right career.
Thus I worked with "Discover What You Are Best At" by Linda Gale, which shows your aptitudes(abilities) to narrow the focus. And now I've found the right direction thanks to both books.
My First Choice for Career and Self Development Counseling.......2007-04-15
I borrowed the 2001 edition of this book from the library and was so impressed I purchased the 2007 edition as soon as it was released. I strongly recommend you purchase this book if you want to understand yourself and/or others better.
Readers of this book will have the opportunity to understand:
1. That there are others like the reader, and that what may seem like a character "flaw" of the reader is a totally normal way for the reader to behave. This alone can improve one's self esteem.
2. That there are four different types of temperament and how the temperament impacts relationships and decision-making.
3. Their own "Personality Type's" strengths and some problem areas.
4. Why the reader, and others, do things the way they do.
5. How things change as we grow older.
The authors list 10 specific situations that "define" what could be the "ultimate" job for each Personality Type. I have read these 10 situations to a number of high school students and young adults with differing types and in each case the person said, "yes - a job like that would be fantastic".
Then the book presents a number of occupations that the person might find enjoyable, gives suggestions on how the person should "Customize Your Job Search" (different for each type of person), various Pathways to Success, and Possible Pitfalls of the type.
They then have a chapter on "Putting It All Together" which has "Ten Steps to Creating a Personal Career Plan," complete with questions and blanks for the reader to complete.
This is a book that is worth buying and keeping on the shelf, after you have used it, for reference as you deal with others and have to deal with situations where understanding yourself and others might result in a better outcome than if you don't understand yourself and the people you are interacting with.
This book will help the reader, or the reader's friends, children, or relatives understand themselves and in fact enables them to improve their decision making process.
This book is not intended to be the final step in finding a career or job, but it is the best place I know of to start.
I have found it useful to use this book along with:
1. Nurture by Nature: How to Raise Happy, Healthy, Responsible Children Through the Insights of Personality Type to help myself and parents understand how to best deal with their children and to help the children to better understand themselves, and
2. Just Your Type: Create the Relationship You've Always Wanted Using the Secrets of Personality Type to better understand how to improve my interaction with the people I am counseling. I understand that this is a book designed to deal with, how shall I say it, possibly romantic relationships, but I have found that it helps me understand how my type can interact most productively with other types. I read the appropriate section just before having a meeting with a student and the student's mother and the meeting went much better than my previous meetings and I could clearly see how changes I made, in response to reading just two short sections of this book, really made a difference.

Choosing a career based on personality type is not a new concept; in fact, the first edition of DO WHAT YOU ARE was released in 1992 (and I can actually remember reading it when I was a junior in high school). In this, the fourth edition, hopefully even more teens will be exposed to this great resource.
The authors, both experts in personality type and career development, put forth the idea that choosing a career path based on your individual personality will be beneficial to your success. For those worried that discovering your personality type is a difficult process, don't despair, because the authors make it quite easy.
There are four dimensions to personality type:
Whether you are extroverted or introverted.
Whether you notice things by sensing or intuition.
Whether you make decisions by thinking or feeling.
Whether you prefer to live by judging or perceiving.
Once you've discovered the answer to each of these four questions, you'll be able to discover which of the sixteen possible personality types you fall into. Once you do, you can quickly skip to the relevant section in the book.
In my case, my personality is ESTJ - or extroverted, sensing, thinking, judging. According to the authors of DO WHAT YOU ARE, my strengths lie in organization, being objective, working alone, and being a good decision maker. My weaknesses are also outlined, and include impatience with those who don't follow procedures, a tendency to overrun people, and difficulty listening to opposing viewpoints. Some suggestions for careers, based on my personality type, are as a teacher, government employee, sales, supervisor, or a manager.
Of course the above is not a full list of the strengths, weaknesses, or recommended career choices for those whose personality type is ESTJ - the above is merely a sampling. But I can say with truth that DO WHAT YOU ARE can be a great resource for those beginning their search for a career choice. I can agree that ESTJ is definitely my personality type (faults and all!) and have no doubt that this book has the power to help everyone looking to correctly match their strengths to the perfect career.

this is a book that every parent should own, a baby shower gift.......2007-05-28
How I wish I had had this book when my 28 year old daughter was born. We no longer have a relationship even tho we love each other but we are 16 (the farthest) personalities apart. I am an extreme extovert ESTJ and she is and extreme introvert (infp)just about the worst combo for mom and child. because she held it all in. She didn't have a chance to speak nor did she like conflict so it wasn't until she found a safe rock to jump to when she got engaged at 25, and she jumped all the way off my rock and never intends to return. I can't blame her looking back, but it wasn't my fault either, my biological family was definitely not introverted and I didn't know they would hold it all in. I am so sorry for what pain I caused her and never knew it, I was a great great mom,and elem teacher, but never knew my own daughter probably highly disliked me. Not until way too late, if only I had known. My heart is broken as I now have a grand daughter I will never get to be a grandmother to, and you may not understand this, but I am very extoverted and it is almost impossible for her to be around me even when I tone down 90% because of the experiences she probaby endured ages 0-5. So I'm sharing with you so you don't suffer the horrid pain I have suffered but have come to accept over the last 3 years since she married.I want only for her to be happy and I think that means she gets to be free of me :)
The Fastest Way To Understand How To Be A More Effective Parent or Teacher.......2007-04-16
I work with students in an alternative K - 12 public school. We have found that it is always necessary to improve the understanding and communication between parent and child if academic and behavioral performance is to be improved.
This book is extremely valuable in helping an adult understand the child and the child to understand him/her self.
The book makes it easy for the adult to determine the adult's and children's styles that are interacting. It then goes on, for each style of child, to provide a brief overview, and then sections dealing with preschool, school-aged, and adolescent child. Within many of these age sections the authors have a sub-section that talks about "the joys and challenges of raising the child," and concludes each type with a page that recaps what works with that particular type of child.
I read the appropriate section to a mother and student and both agreed that it was a perfect description of how the child functioned and how the parent needed to deal with the child.
The advice given in the book on how my meetings with the student could be structured to maximize the achievement of goals I had set for the meeting produced results.
I strongly recommend this book to teachers and parents that wish to make a difficult objective easier to reach.
I also suggest you review the author's other books.
I use Do What You Are: Discover the Perfect Career for You Through the Secrets of Personality Type to narrow down the types of jobs a student may be interested in before administering a career interest survey.
I use Just Your Type: Create the Relationship You've Always Wanted Using the Secrets of Personality Type to improve my understanding of how a person of my type can best interact with the type of person I am dealing with in a particular meeting or teaching / mentoring situation.
This is the tenth copy I have bought of this book!.......2005-09-14
Why? Because I give them away and wear them out with people I care about. It is that practical. OK, I admit to being a certified instructor in the Myers Briggs and a licensed children's counselor now working as a leadership development consultant, but TRULY the insights of Type have helped me to be a better parent (my most important role)to my beloved children. Try it. Take a MBTI assessment for yourself and learn about what each aspect of your own Type means. Follow thorugh with helping you child learn about their type. You will see the bridges to cross together that lead both of you into a richer, more productive relationship with greater joy.
Recommended.......2003-08-26
I bought this book before I had children because I was trying to understand my own personality a little better. Now I am trying to type my 2-year-old son-at least I am having a great time trying, even though I suspect I won't have any final answers until he is able to express himself a little more. Even at this age though, it helps me to identify different traits and not worry about the differences between him and other children in his environment. I think my son is an ESTJ and I am an INTP-so this book has helped to remind me that my son's way of relating to the world is different from mine, and that I need to consider his actions and needs in his context. Also, I like the fact that different learning styles, activity levels, and verbal abilities are discussed as well as the standard introversion vs. extroversion Myers-Briggs typing.
One Important Tool for the Parental Toolbox.......2003-05-01
It is hard to underestimate the value of understanding personality type for developing effective business, spouse, peer, and parent-child relationships. I would speculate that many family conflicts are due to different personality types not being able to communicate with one another, or a child not fitting the behavior model established by the parents or siblings. Still, this is only one tool in the parental toolbox. Personality type should not be the only tool used, it doesn't mean that the tools of common sense and tradition are totally thrown out the window, yet it is a very useful tool and one that many parents are not aware of.
If you are not familiar with personality type, this book serves as a great introduction to understanding both your own and your child's, and may well be the first of a number of books you explore in this area of psychology. If you already have some knowledge about personality type (such as having read 'Please Understand Me II' by David Keirsey), it is still worth picking up a copy of this book. You will find the specific examples and descriptions of how personality type manifests itself in children at different ages to be helpful and insightful.

Customer Reviews:
Excellent application of the MBTI to relationship dynamics.......2006-06-06
Despite its somewhat maudlin title and front cover, this book is very interesting. It based on Jungian MBTI theory which in my view is a very powerful tool for understanding people's personality. The book itself is not theoretical: it gives a brief description of the 16 types and then there is a couple of pages for each of the 136 possible combinations. Much has been printed about the MBTI, but this one has a very interesting practical approach. For each combination, you find a paragraph on the strengths, a paragraph on the weaknesses, and a short list of key recommendations for each partner. Even if you know everything about Jungian psychology you can still discover some new insights on personality relationships. For the anecdote, my INTJ recommendation list (with my ESFJ wife) is a pretty goood summary of everything I do wrong at home !
Just Your Type: Create the Relationship You've Always Wanted Using the Secrets of Personality Type.......2005-07-12
This is a very easy to read book that is broken down into logical and useful sections. It is also a lot of fun.
Helps you understand all relationships, not just romantic.......2003-02-27
If you are into understanding yourself and your relationships with others, you will love this guide.
After decoding myself (ISTP), I decoded everyone I know well, and it helped me to understand how and why each of my relationships differ. I shared the book with my ESTP boyfriend and we laughed so hard we nearly cried, because the book described our relationship SO EXACTLY it was scary.
We all communicate and make decisions differently. This book explains how YOUR type and THEIR type interact, and how to avoid common pitfalls. It's not only helpful, but very eye-opening and fun.
Matches Every Type w/Every Other Type - Unique & Well Done!.......2003-02-08
I'm a huge MBTI nut, and I've read about MBTI book out there, including those from Britain, etc! This book is truly unique b/c it matches every type w/every other type, to show you the joys, pitfalls, and helpful suggestions. What should an ENTJ know about his/her INFP spouse? This book has very specific and personalized answers.
The best thing is, this isn't just a gimmick. It's VERY well done. The insights are superb and will tell you something new about not only your romantic relationships, but other important relationships as well.
My spouse & I have a wonderful relationship - over 10 years of wedded bliss - and we've also done a ton of Myers-Briggs analysis together. So I was shocked and delighted when my spouse read the piece comparing our types - and said, Hey, there are several things in here I want you to read! There were indeed "hints" that I needed to take to heart, things I never would have guessed but that did truly come from our type interaction.
The best dating guide, divorce prevention, self-help book!.......2002-10-31
First, it's important to know I have been a believer in the validity of the personality test upon which this book is based ... from my own experience in the 15 years since I first took the test as required for one of my science major classes in college, and because the test has a good reputation among professionals. The more people I persuade to take this test, the more impressed I am with the accuracy and validity of the test and the accuracy of several other books based upon the test. That's important information because this book can be no more accurate than the personality test upon which it is based. Secondly, the authors are internationally recognized experts in the application of the test results.
Having established that, in my opinion this particular book is more valuable than any of the other books I own based on that personality test because it presents the various personaly types in a more practical manner: exactly how each of the other types is compatible or incompatible with you, and specifically how to interact with each of the other types in order to minimize conflicts. I'm well into my second marriage now and am astounded by how accurately the good aspects and areas of conflict for both marriages were pinpointed in this book ...same goes for every other intimate relationship in my life where I knew the others' type .... it's like the book was written about me, for me! This book is priceless for those of you in the dating scene screening for Mr or Ms "Right for you" and not wanting to waste any time getting to the altar. Or if you think you're in love but are afraid it won't last, wondering what marriage to them would be like since 50% of marriages these days end in divorce. Or for those already married who want to strengthen their relationship and reduce conflicts .... it couldn't be spelled out more clearly and concisely exactly how to go about it for your individual relationship. This book helped me to get the clearest perspective on how others see me...to see the truth of how each relationship is more than just the sum of it's parts or partners, but that two individuals each effect how the other is in the relationship,... and taught me specifically how I can adapt for each of the various individuals in my life that I'd like to get along with better. More than any other book I've read about relationships, (and that's LOTS of books)this book gives pertinent advice tailored specifically for you and each one of your individual relationships. Other books speak generically to the masses based on "the majority" of people researched. My personality type is less than 1% of the population, yet this book still has a lot of accurate information and specific advice relevant to my individual needs. I think this book is the best money I ever spent and my praise doesn't get any better than that! I can see why the authors are internationally recognized experts in the application of this personality test.

Do you communicate ineffectively with some people and powerfully with others? The reason may be a difference in personalities and communication preferences. The Art of Speedreading People is a crash course in communication strategies, showing you how to observe behavioral clues to gain valuable insights into people's personalities and communication styles. The result: you become a more effective and convincing communicator, and you are more likely to receive the response you want.
This book is like a practical communications seminar based on the psychology model called Personality Typing, which is focused on identifying key personality traits in order to communicate most effectively. First, you analyze your own personality type and determine your placement on the scales of extrovert/introvert, sensor/intuitive, thinking/feeling, and judging/perceiving. The book then teaches you about the clues that indicate other people's personality type, including speaking style, body language, and occupation. You test yourself by reading a few scenarios and personality typing the characters described. You put the system to work by learning approaches to "speedreading" people in person and on the phone using skill-building exercises. Finally, you learn how to communicate effectively with people who are a different type or temperament than you. The Art of Speedreading People is intriguing and useful, especially for those who work in a sales, service, teaching, or managerial position, or any job where effective and positive communication is paramount.
Book Description
Wouldn't it be great to have x-ray vision into other people's personalities - to know what they are thinking, what they care deeply about, their likes and dislikes? With x-ray vision you'd know how best to approach people, how to pique their interest in your ideas, how to strike a bargain, resolve a conflict, or simply help others feel more at ease relating to you.
A salesperson pitching a customer. A manager trying to motivate an employee. A teacher attempting to make a point with a student. In each of these situations, how do you determine what strategy is best? Should you joke around? Stick to the facts? Make small talk? Cut to the chase? The right approach can spell the difference between getting what you want from people and getting your signals crossed.
In THE ART OF SPEEDREADING PEOPLE, Paul D. Tieger and Barbara Barron-Tieger show how easy it is to identify key personality characteristics and how you can use this knowledge to communicate more effectively and achieve faster results. Filled with real-life examples and easy-to-follow directions, their book draws on the same scientifically validated Personality Type model that most Fortune 500 companies use. It will help you:
* Instantly identify the preferred communication styles of othesr
* Present ideas in ways more likely to lead to "Ye"
* Recognize the natural strengths and weaknesses of other people (and also understand your own)
* Identify the 4 different temperaments and 16 different personality types
Whether your goal is dealing more successfully with coworkers or employees, friends or family members, prospective customers or clients, THE ART OF SPEEDREADING PEOPLE offers you a powerful advantage in communicating with all types of people.

Excellent book!.......2007-05-15
Wow, what an eye-opener this book is! I really enjoyed reading this book about human personality and strongly recommend it to everyone. The book compares different personality traits and guides the reader to effectively and efficaciously interact with people regardless of their trait. Wish I'd read this book in high school!

I took the Myers Briggs personality test and learned a bit about personality type in communication and psych classes in college. But I wanted to know more. I wondered how I could figure out the personality types of others and use this information to help understand and communicate with others. I came across this book on Amazon and I think I purchased it because of all the great reviews. So I thought I should contribute a great review too. If you only buy one book on personality type I recommend this one. It's a great intro to type and it's very easy to understand. I refer back to it all the time. I also recommend "Just Your Type : Create the Relationship You've Always Wanted Using the Secrets of Personality Type" by the same authors, which matches all 16 personality types with each other, explains how type affects couple's interactions and suggests potential sources of conflict. Also very interesting. I would definitely purchase other books by these authors.
Changed my way of seeing people!.......2005-09-10
This book has changed my life. It is amazing how much I learned about myself. Now I understand my wife and other people, and I don't judge them anymore. My relations to others is now easear and less stressfull. Thanks!
Fantastic!!.......2005-05-17
I must say I was a bit skeptical about the techniques advocated in this book. Just to be on the safe side, I tried it out on my wife first. I'll be darned if we didn't end up doing that hot monkey sex till almost dawn. A must read!!

It will bring tears to your eyes ... from many touching stories and a couple that will make you laugh til you cry.

Something for everyone.
Great Reading.......2006-08-15
Bought book for my 88 year old mother. The large print enables her to read and the great stories and the humor kept her interested in this book. She really injoyed this book and now I have started reading it also and find it to be delightful.
Grams and Grandpa loved it! .......2005-04-16
My mom bought me chicken soup for the kids, preteen and preteen 2's soul. I fell in love with the series. Well, my Grams and Grandpa's anniversery was coming up so I thought a rose bouquet, a card, and a chicken soup book would be perfect. I looked for a chicken soup book that would be for 60+ people and I found this! It's just great. But one thing thats not true: Anyone can read this and enjoy it! I am just a kid and I liked it. My grandparents definetly liked it. I recommend this book for everybody!
Excellent for all(even 25 year olds)!!!.......2003-06-03
I originally bought this book for some older friends of mine. I ended up reading it all the way through before giving it to them. The stories touched all of my emotions and reminded me of my wonderful grandparents as well(my grandparents raised my sisters and I thru much of our childhood). This is a great book for anyone and everyone-don't pass it up.
They've done it again.......2000-12-05
Readers who haven't received a recent dose of "Chicken Soup for the Soul," shame on you. In "Chicken Soup for the Golden Soul," Mark Victor Hansen, Jack Canfield, Barbara Chesser, Amy Seeger and Paul Meyer present us with one of the best of the series.
I say it is a must-read for anyone on either side of 60. It is a timeless, energized, enthusiastic, motivational book written with golden years in mind, but filled with stories all can enjoy. Will be a great holiday gift for lots of folks on your list.
