Book Description
When a horrifying attack leaves one of the four members<BR />of the Women's Murder Club struggling for her life, the<BR />others fight to keep a madman behind bars before anyone<BR />else is hurt. And Lindsay Boxer and her new partner in the<BR />San Francisco police department run flat-out to stop a series<BR />of kidnappings that has electrified the city: children are<BR />being plucked off the streets together with their nannies--<BR />but the kidnappers aren't demanding ransom. Amid<BR />uncertainty and rising panic, Lindsay juggles the possibility<BR />of a new love with an unsolvable investigation, and the<BR />knowledge that one member of the club could be on the<BR />brink of death.<BR />And just when everything appears momentarily under<BR />control, the case takes a terrifying turn, putting an entire<BR />city in lethal danger. Lindsay must make a choice she never<BR />dreamed she'd face--with no certainty that either outcome<BR />has more than a prayer of success.
Customer Reviews:
Another mindless read.......2007-06-24
This book just proves that Patterson's work is getting worse and worse. I think his publisher is just printing anything he sends in. The characters are cardboard cut-outs and the plot is predictable and boring. You'd be better to spend your money on Dean Koontz or better yet, Bill Clem, a fairly new thriller writer who is often compared to Patterson, but whose books are ten times better. J.P. needs to retire.
Tension Target.......2007-06-24
Number 6 in the Women's Murder Club series, "The 6th Target" by James Patterson and Maxine Paetro packs all the wallop of a skilled master author of police procedural fiction. From page 5, when Claire Washburn is gunned down trying to stop a shooting spree the action never stops.
Patterson and Paetro keep fans of the excellent series reading as Lindsay Boxer must juggle three separate cases to find her friend's assailant.
Be careful what you wish for, you may get it. Lindsay reduced in grade, is back working the streets while her partner is promoted to her former position. Plot twists and curves bring home a winner for the reader.
Nash Black, author of "Qualifying Laps," "Sins of the Fathers," and "Taxes, Stumbling Blocks & Pitfalls for Authors 2007."
Dissapointing. . ........2007-06-23
I was quite disspointed with the latest novel in the Women's Murder Club Series. I couldn't wait for this book to come out and I was sorely dissapointed. There was def too much going on in this story. 3 different storylines and none of them seemed to be wrapped up sufficiently. Very anti-climatic. I can usually say that with James Patterson books, I finish them in less than 24 hours, but with this book, I was reading it for 2 weeks. The only reason it went that fast is because I was hoping against hope that Patterson would with some twisted finish wrap it all together. Unfortunately, he did not.
Disappointing.......2007-06-21
A coworker got me addicted to this series and I actually counted down the days until it's release only to be disappointed when reading it. As others have stated, the "whodonit" that kept me glued to the first few books was not part of this one at all. The 3 main story lines were all over the place ending with several unresolved sub-plots that left me more annoyed then excited about the next book. And isn't the whole purpose of the Women's Murder Club series, for them to get together and solve cases? There was NONE of that in this book. I hope the next book gets back on track.....and that James Patterson writes it ALONE.
Missing an Ending?.......2007-06-20
I gave my review 3 stars because it is James Patterson; however, I was disappointed with this book! It was almost as if he decided to end the book without really wrapping it up. None of the plots had anything to do with each other. I understand it is a series so maybe there will be more to come later, but I expected something more robust from the author.

Wholesome ingredients ..........2007-06-24
This book has everything we look for in popular fiction ... good story, compelling characters, believable action, and a sincere appeal to the emotions. Patterson turns what could be yet another story set in New York City into a special New York City story.
A Great Read.......2007-06-22
I really enjoyed this book. I kind of like the short chapters - because I do quite a lot of my reading during my lunch hour and can easily finish a chapter and not be late back to my desk. I liked that he had 10 children and that he was a devoted family man. I found the mystery griping enough to keep me guessing. I'll read others if he makes this a series. But I must say the Cross books are the best with the Womern's Murder Club coming in second.
Step on a Crack.......2007-06-08
One of the best Patterson books I have read. Could not put it down, keep you wanting to read more. I am looking forward to more books based on the new character.
Kind of confusing and over-dramatic at times.......2007-06-02
This was the first time reading a James Patterson book for me. It was alright but at times there was too much drama and confusion. I didn't like how a whole scene was just skipped with the hostages were released and the bad guys got away. Still don't know exactly what happened but it could turn into an action and suspense movie.
Great Reading.......2007-05-31
I finally have time to read! After reading "Cross" while on vacation I was hooked on James patterson. I bought this book and couldn't put it down. I couldn't wait to turn the page and see what was going to happen next. Now, I need to get another Patterson book. I highly recommend "Step on a Crack".

Book Description
Alex Cross was a rising star in the Washington, DC, Police Department when an unknown shooter gunned down his wife, Maria, in front of him. The killer was never found, and the case turned cold, filed among the unsolved drive-bys in D.C.'s rough neighborhoods. Years later, still haunted by his wife's death, Cross is making a bold move in his life. Now a free agent from the police and the FBI, he's set up practice as a psychologist once again. His life with Nana Mama, Damon, Jannie, and little Alex is finally getting in order. He even has a chance at a new love. Then Cross's former partner, John Sampson, calls in a favor. He is tracking a serial rapist in Georgetown, one whose brutal modus operandi recalls a case Sampson and Cross worked together years earlier. When the case reveals a connection to Maria's death, Cross latches on for the most urgent and terrifying ride of his life. From the man USA Today has called the "master of the genre," Cross is the high-velocity thriller James Patterson and Alex Cross's fans have waited years to read--and the pinnacle of the bestselling detective series of the past two decades.
Customer Reviews:
Cross.......2007-06-24
I was curious to listen to this, my first book on a Playaway, an iPod type listening device of a single novel. This was cool! 7.5 hrs continuous, stopping starting at any point. I stuck with this story to the end and am so mad at myself for the totally waste of time. The content is brutal, not exciting or suspensful. The writing is cliche filled, name dropping to appear contemporary and stupidly improbable! I'm annoyed at authors who write just to fill pages, ensnareing readers (listeners) with nonsense. Don't even want to dwell on a review other than to advise, skip it!
Cross Delivers.......2007-06-19
I was really thrilled to read this book as I have loved past Alex Cross novels. This was a great read. One of the more romantic Cross novels, I loved the romance scenes including his wife (although I have only read 4 others). Also a lot of great action scenes and suspense. I would definetly recommend this, I loved it.
Great thriller and a real page-turner.......2007-06-17
It's summer and my favorite pastime is sitting on my porch on a warm afternoon, reading. I started this one this morning and read it in one sitting. Wow! Cross has drama, action, and best of all, a nice insight into several characters' minds. I loved it.
I was disappointed with Beach Road, but wanted to give Patterson a "second chance." I'm glad I did. Now, I am anxious to go back and read all of the "Cross" series. I like this character a lot and want to learn more about him.
This one would make a great movie, and hopefully, that's where it's headed. I highly recommend this book.
Expecting More!.......2007-06-11
I was expecting more of this one. It was a page-turner, but it did not have the suspense I was expecting and therefore this disappointment. Excellent book, just not what I was expecting for the other Alex Cross novels I had read.
There are just too many other good writers and characters out there in this genre that deserve to be read and enjoyed.
This is not the Alex Cross that I have enjoyed at the beginning of the series. Cross must have had a head injury because the character just seems to babble along without any intelligible analysis or interpretation of what is happening around him. And then there was this plot twist between Cross and Sampson that I'm still having trouble understanding.
I was expecting more from this novel. Still it was a page-turner, to a limited degree, because there was little suspense and this caused a big disappointment with me.
It`s not a terrible book, it just didn't measure up to the other Cross stories that I have enjoyed. Besides, there are just too many other good writers and characters out there in this genre that deserve to be read and enjoyed. Speaking of a deserving read if you are a mystery lover like myself I highly recommend The Monopoly Factor by Robert L. Saunders. You won't regret this read. Have a good day.
A Mystery Solved.......2007-05-18
Patterson must go through a lot of keyboards. At the rate he writes, they surely melt down about once a week. Consider: He has the Women's Murder Club series of detective novels, the Alex Cross detective novels, the Maximum Ride series of young adult novels, the nursery rhyme titles (See How they Run, Step on a Crack, Along Came a Spider, etc.) and various thrillers co-written with Howard Roughan, Andrew Gross and others. His output is nearing 50 books.
Cross is his most recent in the Alex Cross series, about the former Washington DC detective/PhD who eventually moves to the FBI, then finally ends up as a law enforcement consultant and part time therapist. His wife was shot on the street years ago and died in his arms, leaving him with three kids and Nanna Mama, the ruling matriarch of his little family who happens to be his grandmother. The family man side of Cross humanizes and complicates the character. It sometimes gives him motivation to be a hero, and often causes him consternation and moral dilemmas.
In this book Cross finally solves the central mystery of his life, who killed his beloved wife.
I've read several of the Alex Cross books and, frankly, I'm getting a little tired of his family and his almost love life. Still, I can't put one down once I start to read it. Patterson has his ups and downs, but he is a terrific storyteller. He knows how to keep the reader engaged for one more, just one more chapter. A great writer? Nah, but an entertaining one.

Customer Reviews:
Ummm.......hmm................2007-06-22
I was kind of disappointed with this book....although I love the 2 previous books! For one thing......in my opinion.....it sounded a bit chessy......especially toward the end of the book when Max and the other 2 girls get capture......and those 3 tests that she had to pass because of that lunatic lady. Also finding out who her dad wasn't a surprise but finding out her who mother was....this book felt a bit rush to me....
Overall it is okay, not really that great though.
Fun for the kid.......2007-06-20
I'd give this book 3.5 stars if I could. It was good, but obviously written for a young teen audience. Looking at it from the view it was written for, i think it was an awesome and very interesting book. But if you are a little older, it might seem a little lacking. Some of the characters experience no growth and were there just to add a line. And some of the plot is childish; it is a good idea in theory but it would never really work.(Warning, spoiler alert.)
For one, there are parts of the book that could have used elaborating, but just left you hanging. There is one point when Max says that she had arranged that Angel would pretend to turn, but she says nothing else about it. She doesn't say when and none of the kids question it. It is actually never brought up in the book again. How do they know Max was telling the truth and not just covering for her? Also, I cannot get over her change of heart for Ari. If someone tried to kill me I don't think I'll ever forgive them. Especially if they almost killed my bf too. And I don't think she was too wary about him. She left him alone with the kids at one point for a long time. And lastly, some of the flock makes comments on how the director looks like Max and Max even says they have the same attitude, which would make sense if she raised her or was her mother, but she was neither. A younger audience wouldn't question these, but for those of us that are a little older, this kind of takes something away.
I did like how the author tried to add the romance aspect, but i felt he could have added a little more without traumatizing the little kids. He has put a lot of tension between the two and it is kind of disappointing that this is all we're given. And the way the two act about it so juvenile. They act more like [...]with a crush than fourteen year olds. Don't worry, though, it is all G rated.
One thing I didn't like was the two and three page chapters. It felt like it was a book written for people with a short attention span. (and I don't believe someone with a short attention span would read a 300+ page book.)It jumped around too much and it felt like it was written by a [...]. Even when I was fourteen, my chapters were a lot longer than three or four pages.
Those are some of the things that bothered me, but I still liked the book. And i think that I will buy the next one that comes out. Did you hear that it might be the last one?
Maximum Ride: Saving the World and Other Extreme Sports.......2007-06-20
I could praise this book in so many ways. Max is even more likeable now, and I'm glad that Fang's blog is actually part of the book as more than just a little extra, and I found some parts that were absolutely hilarious (everything with ter Borcht in it, basically).
This book is so wonderful. Just as good as the rest of the series, and I am so sad that it's over. I am definitely going to find some more James Patterson books...
not the best.......2007-06-19
The first sixty pages were so boring to get through and then everything is just wrapped up so simply with the answers being handed out left and right.
Way too simple, you can tell the author just wanted to end the main plot... and then the plot line between Fang and Max never gets tied up...
The Best kid series around.......2007-06-19
James Patterson does a wonderful job of actually feeling like you are the character. Every single page is action packed and a must for kids. This book will make any and I mean ANY reluctant reader begging for more.

Fans of James Patterson's resourceful cop Alex Cross will be relieved to find that he's back on familiar territory with Violets Are Blue--and, more importantly, that this is one of the best Alex Cross thrillers yet.
The malign criminal genius of Roses Are Red is fixing to give Alex a hard time once again. The FBI joins Patterson's dogged cop in a particularly unsettling investigation: two San Francisco joggers have been viciously murdered and are found suspended by their feet, with all the blood drained from their corpses. And when further brutal deaths follow in California and on the East Coast, Alex is forced to contemplate the bizarre possibility of modern-day vampires, although his instincts point him to one of the many sinister religious cults that flourish on the West Coast. Aided by Jamilla Hughes, a streetwise young woman detective from San Francisco, Alex finds that he has to crack not one but two impenetrable mysteries to stop further bloodletting.
Patterson fans expect the extremely concise, page-turning chapters (116 of them here!), along with a reluctance to dawdle over details of his hero's personal life, and both characteristics are firmly back in place. If you can resist reading this one in just a few sittings, you deserve some kind of a thriller reader's medal. --Barry Forshaw, Amazon.co.uk
Book Description
Two joggers are found murdered in San Francisco's Golden Gate Park, and the killings are bizarrely reminiscent of a Washington, D.C. case that Alex Cross has been unable to solve. He is called to San Francisco, and then learns of similar murders in eight cities from Las Vegas to Charleston. Together with a female San Francisco detective, Cross plunges into a menacing world where posing explodes into bloodlust and frenzy, even as he is being stalked by a terrifying criminal who calls himself the Mastermind.
James Patterson is at his most shocking and suspenseful best in a novel that will stun and satisfy his vast audience.
Download Description
Alex Cross has never believed in vampires. But when two joggers are found slain in a manner that suggests a macabre ritual, he has to reconsider. Someone believes in vampires enough to have committed a series of bizarre murders that appear to be the work of one. Local police are horrified, and even the FBI is baffled.
Cross takes on the case and plunges into a netherworld of secret clubs and role-players, a world full of poseurs and playactors--and someone demented enough to have crossed the line from dark ritual to real blood. At the same time, a lethal supercriminal from Cross's past known as the Mastermind is stalking him, taunting him, and threatening everything he holds dear. Cross has never been closer to defeat, or in greater danger. In a shocking conclusion, Alex Cross must survive a deadly confrontation--only to discover at last the awful secret of the Mastermind.

Do NOT read this book, out of order.......2007-06-04
Do NOT read this book if you haven't read his earlier books. Not only are there lots of confusing references to his earlier books, but also lots of spoilers. Much of this book did not make sense. Also the 'sidekick' Sampson is always wasted in these books. It's like he's just waiting around to help Cross or console him and doesn't have much to do. Big disappointment compared to Spenser and Hawk (I recommend Robert Parker novels BY FAR over these.)
Average Book -- If You're a Patterson Fan, Read It, If Not Don't Start Here.......2007-04-16
I think there are two themes in the reviews to this book.
1. The book doesn't come up to those in the rest of the Alex Cross series. Its not a *bad* book, but its just a weak effort in the series.
2. The two stories in the book -- the vampires plus the mastermind, just really don't mesh. I understand what Patterson is trying to do here, in a theme within a theme, but even given that the connection between the two should be a little more evident.
I would add another piece that I thought the vampires piece wasn't a strong story in and of itself. It had the set-up to be a good story, but ultimately in my mind it just didn't all fully hang together for me logically. Without going too deeply into spoilers, I was left asking is it supernatural, or is it not?
Finally while I bashed this a little in this review, its not a bad book. Its a decent page turning thriller and if you grab the book in a used book store or otherwise need something to occupy your time on a long flight, you won't be disappointed.
Excellent read.......2007-04-05
I loved it. I read 'Roses are Red', 2 days later got this. Awesome. I also liked how realistic the story was in describing the Goth world. Very very true, which makes the book even more interesting.
Gripping Suspense.......2007-03-21
I actually received this book by accident several months ago from a book club I am a member of. A few weeks ago,I decided to pick it up and try to read it- since I had never read anything by Mr. Patterson before. I am so glad I did. Now I want ALL of Mr. Patterson's books. I believe it only took me four days to read this book. I was drawn into so deeply, I coulf not put it down. I LOVED it!
A new look at Patterson.......2007-03-07
I haven't read an Alex Cross adventure since Kiss the Girls. This definitely wasn't as good but, it did make me want to go back and re read all of the Alex Cross adventures that I missed.
I wasn't lost, which is a good thing about Patterson's books. I don't have to read them in order if I don't want to. I did like this book, don't get me wrong, but the two cases in one sort of made me a little confused throughout the whole ordeal. With that said, I can still picture Morgan Freeman in every story!

James Patterson and Peter de Jonge's The Beach House opens with the death of a handsome townie on Memorial Day weekend in the Hamptons, where being a single-digit millionaire is laughable and being poor is unthinkable. Peter Mullen is a high school dropout who parks cars at the private bashes of the superwealthy Barry and Campion Neubauer. When Peter is found dead on the beach, the Neubauers and their friends insist that he drowned, but his brother Jack, a law student who saw Peter's body, knows he was beaten to death. As Jack uncovers evidence of his brother's secret life, he begins to realize that the very rich are indeed different from the rest of us. Revenge is a dish best served cold, and Jack's patiently plotted payback for Peter's death is one that the Hamptons will not soon forget.
There are no big surprises in The Beach House, but it's vintage Patterson, with plenty of action, villains with hearts blacker than obsidian, and a working-class hero who pulls himself up by the bootstraps. Patterson and de Jonge previously coauthored the inspirational golf romance Miracle on the 17th Green, but this new game of money, mayhem, and murder clearly suits them to a tee. --Barrie Trinkle
Book Description
Jack Mullen is in law school in New York City when the shocking news comes that his brother Peter has drowned in the ocean off East Hampton. Jack knows his brother and knows this couldnt be an accident. Someone must have wanted his brother dead. But the powers that be say otherwise. As Jack tries to uncover details of his brothers last night, he confronts a barricade of lawyers, police, and paid protectors who separate the multibillionaire summer residents from local workers like Peter. And he learns that his brother wasnt just parking cars at the summer parties of the rich. He was making serious money satisfying the sexual needs of the richest women and men in town. THE BEACH HOUSE reveals the secret lives of celebrities in a breathtaking drama of revengewith a finale so shocking it could only have come from the mind of James Patterson.

BY James Patterson & Peter De Jonge?.......2007-06-14
I think Patterson could have done without the help. I like Patterson's style and move-along plots. This plot however, with the autopsy on Peter's body getting passed off as a drowning-suicide, was a disappointment. The rich buy the courts, but not with the kinds of evidence the coroner presented. The ending really frosts the cake when they have their "Kangaroo Court" in the abandoned Beach house over a two-day span. Since it wasn't terrible, I can only give three stars.

Hard to believe its a Patterson book!.......2007-06-10
What a waste of time spending that much time, then to have an ending that doesn't make sense at all!! Feel that I wasted my time and money on this one. After recently readingJudge and Jury , hard to believe its written by same person. If you want a good one, pick up Judge & Jury.
Book on CD.......2007-05-23
I listened to Beach Road on CD and I must say that I did enjoy the book. I thought that it was interesting the way the story played out. Honestly I was surprised by the charater Loco turned out to be. I enjoyed this book.
Audio CD Review; Always Good.......2007-05-16
I've listened to quite a few of Patterson's books on Audio, and I enjoy the little background scenarios that are sometimes created with music, or various sound effects; the stories are solid and I feel something is lost by dissecting them or their characters. We enjoy and return to Patterson's books because we know they are reliable and we won't be let down. That said, I have one issue which relates ONLY to the audio versions and not the books themselves: PLEASE make sure your pronunciations of unusual-sounding names or places is correct! The Long Island town of Ronkonkoma, for example; to see it in print is no problem, but to hear it repeatedly mispronounced made me crazy and truly detracted from the moment. (The accent belongs on the 2nd syllable, not the 3rd...)
interesting style of patterson's..........2007-04-03
This is my first book that I've read of Patterson's. I saw his list of books and found it interesting that he co-writes with other authors. However, it doesn't seem to be a bad idea. With *The Beach House*, I found it to be interesting how fast you can read through a book with small chapters. It turned out not to be such a bad idea.
Peter Mullen is found dead at the beach in the Hamptons. The officials in the town are calling it a suicide. However, Jack, the older brother who is studying law, believes it was murder. One, Peter was an expert swimmer and knew the "laws" of the ocean. Two, when Jack saw Peter's body, he was covered in bruises. Three, a competent coroner who did the autopsy confirmed that Peter did not drown.
However, none of the officials agree with Jack and still claim that Peter had committed suicide. Meanwhile, Jack gradually builds up a team of people who agree with the fact that Peter was murdered. Of course, the tide turns and everyone starts to say that Peter suicided. Just who or what has made these people changed their minds?
Jack and a few people (his grandfather, his new girlfriend...) seem to be losing the battle. All seems lost when the court rules Peter's death as suicide. That is when Jack and his people become desperate. They hold their own televised court when they come across some incriminating evidence.
Do the rich really buy their way out of crime? Can they buy "facts" or have them altered and get away with it? Do the rich really control the courts? Jack and his people are rich but they aren't poor. Can they be bought out?
The question is which ruling will the general public and the courts uphold? The original court's ruling or the "kangaroo" court's ruling?
*The Beach House* is an interesting story about how the court and the rich cornering a man when he'll have no choice but to fight back like a feral animal. And when he does, all hell breaks loose.

Book Description
Senior FBI agent Nick Pellisante is closing in on the notorious mob boss The Electrician, when the scheduled sting goes spectacularly awry. Two FBI agents are dead, the boss is wounded, and Pellisante vows the Electricians next move will be from a jail cell. Andie Echeverra, a part-time actress and a single, full-time mom, is assigned her next role as Juror #11 in the landmark trial against Mafia Don Dominic Cavello. Everybody is on edge. No one has ever crossed the man whose orders have made entire families disappear. Though Cavellos influence extends across blue uniforms and black robes, the case should be open-and-shut. But the legal system fails with devastating results, and Nick and Andie are the only ones left to seek justice. To stop the Electrician, they must take matters into their own hands. They are the judge and jury now. James Patterson spins an all-out heart-pounding legal thriller that pits two people against the most vicious and powerful mobster since John Gotti.

Good Read.......2007-06-25
Not Pattersons best, but defintiely worth your time. It takes about 100 pages for the story to really get going, but once it does, its a good thrill ride that is typical Patterson. I would recommend this to any Patterson fan, or fan of suspense novels. Good beach read. Read it in 2 days on the beach.
A pageturner, as usual.......2007-06-07
Dominic Cavello is a ruthless Mafia boss who kills "just for the fun of it" and who will stop at nothing to escape punishment for his crimes. Andie DeGrasse is an actress and a single mother who ends up on the jury of Cavello's latest trial. Nick Pellisante is an F.B.I. agent who has devoted several years of his career to catching Cavello and working for his conviction. These three characters' lives intersect and the sparks begin to fly. This is a typical Patterson/Gross pageturner, and if the reader can suspend disbelief in some unbelievable situations, he or she is in for an entertaining read.
I'm Puzzled. This Mystery is a Disappointment Yet, MR. Patterson can do better. .......2007-05-29
I'm not sure what has happened to Mr. Patterson's writing skills, but it seems to me that a majority of his novels that he has co-wrote with someone have been real duds. I just finished reading his latest release, "The 6th Target and that was another real dud. All I can say to Mr. Patterson: "I have enjoyed many of your earlier novels, would you get serious and start creating well-written stories that you certainly have the talent to conceive."
There are numerous reviews that give a detailed account of the story, so I'll be brief. In the story "Judge and Jury", I almost got excited and began to read pages non-stop, but then the story started to fall apart again. At this point I was reading the scene where the mob leader is on trial for murder. Does he care? No. He just solves the problem by hiring an assassin to destroy the bus that the jury panel is riding on. Murder an entire jury? I just shook my head, wondering who was next: the judge, the DA?. I know this is fiction but the scenes should have some resemblance to the real world. Then we have Nick Pellisante, the FBI agent in hot pursuit of the mobster all over the world with a bank account that seems to have no bottom to it.
I was disappointed with the novel. It's not a terrible read, but I do feel that it is not a super mystery read. If you are a die hard fan of Mr. Patterson, you may find it an enjoyable read.
Please allow me to make a recommendation to my mystery friends. A few weeks ago I bought a book at a Bookfest by Robert L. Saunders, entitled The Monopoly Factor. I have to shout out that this mystery was an impressive read and I wholeheartedly recommend it to any of you folks that are searching for a refreshing writing style. The story will keep you reading non-stop and the characters...well I can only tell you that you'll find that you can't help but cheer on Barry and Susan. It's a thrilling mystery novel by a soon to be well-known author. Plus it's not peppered with a lot of foul language! Have a good day.
Disappointing.......2007-05-18
Yes it's easy and fast to read with large print and rarely more than three pages to a chapter. But the story borders on ridiculous, the characters are lame-brained and the writing hovers over the level of "Reader's Digest". I've read much, much better Patterson.
Audio CD Review; Excellent!.......2007-05-16
As a fan of both James Patterson and Robert B Parker, I was very happy to see this audio version of Patterson's book read by Joe Mantegna, the 'voice' of Parker's much-loved Spenser. I have to admit to a bit of confusion, though, when my mind would start to wander and I would hear 'Spenser' not being 'Spenser'... at any rate, Joe Mantegna delivers a terrific (as always) performance, beautifully spoken with strength, character, subtleties; and Patterson's story is as adventurous as usual. Those who would nit-pick about the ignorance of poker-playing, I say to you, you're missing the Big Picture; and that is, a solid story for those of us who like Patterson's action-adventures.

Roses Are Red, James Patterson's sixth Alex Cross thriller, opens with the District of Columbia detective attempting to mend his nearly unraveled family. The year-long kidnapping of one's intended (1999's Pop Goes the Weasel) will do that to a relationship. Christine, the kidnappee, is amenable with one reasonable condition: that her family's horizon remain uncluttered by homicidal maniacs. How unfortunate, then, that the joyous christening of their newborn son is rudely interrupted by the FBI bearing news of several heinous murders requiring the attention of detective (and doctor of psychology) Cross. <blockquote>"Three-year-old boy, the father, a nanny," Kyle said one more time before he left the party. He was about to go through the door in the sun porch when he turned to me and said, "You're the right person for this. They murdered a family, Alex."
As soon as Kyle was gone, I went looking for Christine. My heart sank. She had taken Alex and left without saying good-bye, without a single word.</blockquote> Which leaves Cross free to hunt the Mastermind, the barbarous brains behind a widening series of bank robberies in which employees or their family members are held hostage and, when instructions aren't followed to the finest iota, slaughtered. Given the cases' glaring and unfathomable inhumanity, Cross's long- time DCPD partner (the wonderful giant, John Sampson) gives way to the warm, attractive, and fiercely intelligent FBI Agent Betsey Cavalierre.
The longer and harder Cross and Cavalierre remain on his trail, the bolder and more brutal--and shiveringly close to home--the Mastermind's strikes become. And, thanks mostly to lightning-short paragraphs and a point of view that rappels from the first-person Cross to the third-person Mastermind, the tale progresses at hot-trot speed to a bona fide doozy of a denouement. It'll be over before you know it, so sit back, hold your breath, and enjoy the show. And stay tuned for the next one. --Michael Hudson

The team, which includes an attractive FBI agent named Betsy Cavalierre, faces pressure on every front right up to the shocking and explosive climax. Patterson, author of seven national bestsellers, is a past winner of the prestigious Edgar Award.
"Patterson keeps the pages turning all the way up to the jaw-dropping conclusion...this one is not to be missed." (Booklist)

But the money is not enough. Alex Cross's investigation has gotten under the Mastermind's skin, and he makes it his personal goal to take revenge on Cross's entire team, one person at a time--before coming after Cross himself. Good . But the use of GD word is often .......2007-06-09
This is a book of Bank Robberies and killings of bank managers families and a few detectives . I was able to read the entire book however I found the GD word that used way to many times in book to be a little offensive so I won't be reading anymore of the Alex Cross series .The book would have been just as good without the GD words in it .

Another Great Alex Cross Novel.......2007-04-30
Like all the other JP Books especially the Alex Cross series this book is the same - a great thriller that keeps you guessing right to the end. He has the usual short chapter set up which we all love i am sure making this a short read full of suspense. BTW you must also get Violets are Blue so you can find out how it all ends! Great read would recommend to anyone
Roses are Red.......2007-02-06
The author devotes too much writing to covering the activities of the family of the leading character.
One of the worst of its kind........2007-02-05
Yuck. Terrible. Two and three-page chapters, one dimensional characters, senseless plot, serial killer with no apparent motive, etc. I've read all the books in the Harry Bosch and Jack Reacher series and was looking for something new, but I don't even know how this got published.
Roses Are Red.......2007-01-10
This is the first book that I've read in the Alex Cross series. I'm a big fan of the movies "Along Came a Spider" and "Kiss the Girls" and I kept picturing Morgan Freeman as I read the story!
I thought the novel was an entertaining quick-read. Perfect for a train ride to work since the chapters are short and to-the-point. I enjoyed the plot of the story, even though, I agree with other reviewers that the twist at the end was a bit weak.
I think that the novel would have been better if there was more focus on the action/mystery instead of Alex's personal life. I don't think that his daughter's illness added much to the story besides proving that he is too involved with his work, and the story with his love interest (don't want to give spoilers) only leaves an opening for his character for future novels.
I'll probably read the next novel "Violets Are Blue" to see what happens, but I'm not in a hurry to go and buy it any time soon.
