Loved it!!.......2006-08-01
I bought this book when I was 11 years old. I started to read it a few times but always ended putting it back down after the first chapter or two. As a kid I thought it was kinda boring and I couldn't understand the old English dialect. However..........I am now 25 years old and a week ago I picked up the book again (something told me to keep it all these years)and read the entire book. I am so glad I kept it!! It was so good. I recommend this book to everyone who likes to read. And, if it is boring the first time, keep it and then try again. That worked for me!!
A thoroughly absorbing and often terrifying time-slip fantasy.......2005-06-28
Young Abigail is a fairly typical teenager--blind to the needs of her mother that seem to run contrary to her own needs, and yet concerned enough over the frazzled, tired look on the face of the woman next door to take the neighbour's children, Natalie and Vincent, off her hands for a while. They go to the park where other children are playing a game they call Beatie Bow. Both Natalie and Abigail are very taken by a strange girl that Natalie calls "the little furry girl", who is closely watching the game. But the little girl flees, squawking, when they talk to her. Later, wearing a dress she has made from some Victorian crochet lace, Abigail sees the little furry girl again. When the child flees from her she follows--to soon find herself in streets she no longer recognises.
Young readers might find this time-slip novel a little slow to start, even for a book published in the 1980s, but if they persist they will soon find themselves in a thoroughly absorbing, and often terrifying, tale. While it might have surprised Abigail that the undersized, illiterate girl who was always screeching "I'll punch ye yeller and green!" became someone of considerable importance, I doubt young readers will be surprised. Beatie Bow is a thoroughly unforgettable character and Ruth Park's prose is always a joy to read.
It made me sad to see the reviews here posted by students who were forced to "study" the book at school. This is a serious disservice to everyone concerned because all it's likely to do is turn young people against reading. Fiction should be for fun not for study.
Playing Beatie Bow.......2003-10-10
This is my favourite children's book. I read it when I was about 11, I think, and love it to this day (I'm 18). If you like time travelling novels, I highly suggest this one.
Beautiful.......2002-09-21
Okay, I'm not actually under thirteen (I am 13) but anyway....
This book is beautiful. It's evocative, passionate and has an elusive, mysterious aura about it. The characters are all loved by Ruth Park, even the obnoxious Beatie and the hypochondriac, Gibbie.
I loved the way Abigail was so independant, and so strong. I completely fell in love with Judah and I don't think Robert will replace him- not for Abigail or me, actually.
Ruth Park is a fantastic author so I would recommend other books by her, particularly the Harp in the South- a look at suburban Sydney in the 1940's.
Playing Beatie Bow - A review.......2002-07-05
well, i had to read this book for english and i didnt really enjoy it. It dragged on a bit and it was really boring. Sorry if im offending anyone who liked this book but this is what i think. My teachers always tell me to give a reason so i will. i think the main reason i didnt enjoy this book was because it was a bit old. It was published in 1980, so thats probobly why. I wasn't even born then. Anyway, the book is about this girl called Abigail who ends up travelling back in time by accident, and the family she stays with thinks she's the gift or something. Im not going to say what happens in the end, not because that would spoil it but because i didnt read the end - it was too boring. (please note, this is not meant to offend anyone or anything. This is the review i submitted to my teacher.) Thankyou, Written By ME (no names for saftey purposes)

family treasure.......2006-01-01
Our children's grandfather brought this treasure home as a gift when he visited Australia almost 20 years ago. Our four kids are grown, but when we are all home for an occasion, we still can sit and read out-loud from this delightful book. We have been known to laugh until we truly cry at the antics of these very human and endearing characters. I rate it with Winnie-the-Pooh as the best ever, for children AND adults.
Buying a second copy.......2003-08-14
We originally bought this piece of classic Austrailian children's literature back in 1992. That book has worn out from use and we are purchasing a second at the request of the children. It is similar to Winnie-the-Pooh, although Wombat can get a little stubborn sometimes. We find it very humorous.

Book Description
Color is hot and this system sizzles. Color has such a strong emotional and physical influence on buyers that manufacturers have spent fortunes to determine what colors to use in packaging their products.
Packaging people is even more important. Sucess through Color Charisma brings the knowledge of the power of color to a very personal level.
Color Charisma is a unique system of color analysis based on a solid foundation of fact. Sandy Parks has unraveled the complex science of color and Ruth Miller has used her wordmastery to turn this complex subject into easy and interesting reading. She leads us to the understanding of the messages that colors project...the Missing Link in Communication.

The Influence of Color in Your Life.......2003-03-06
-Success Through Color Charisma- was a fast, interesting read packed with information on color that explains how color impacts individuals and businesses in every day life, personal relationships, reactions and advertising. The premise of the book is that people have to be trained to see color, its advantages and disadvantages, and how to maximize the use of color in their lives. The book doesn't advocate throwing out everything in your closet, make-up drawer, or home, but to gradually change over to a more compatible color scheme to use color more effectively. Color analysis can help an individual feel better about himself, or herself and gain self-confidence! Give it a try!
Success through buying their system.......2002-03-31
This book is nothing more than a sales pitch for the author's "Color Charisma" program. It talks about what right and wrong colors will do for you, then it says you can't color analyze yourself. You must have a professional do this, of course, preferably through one of their "Color Charisma" offices. The rest of the book consists of rudimentary color information you could find on the web for free. This book has nothing to do with success or charisma and is a waste of time and money. I'd suggest "10 steps to fashion freedom" by Malcolm Levene and Kate Mayfield if you want an informative, uplifting alternative. It focuses on building self-awareness while updating your wardrobe and has a great chapter on color.

Poking faces .......2007-03-22
"There was this boy named Josh. He could do lots of things. There was one thing he could do best of all. He could make faces."
This was a favourite story of mine as a child, and it is still amusing today, mostly due to the illustrations. Josh pokes really ugly faces to his advantage and disadvantage.
This book appeals to children 4 and up.
Great read-aloud from down under.......2003-11-15
Watch as Josh makes some really scary colorful faces. Large colorful pictures and the story keep the attention of young listers as they listen to Josh's story.
Josh learned how good he was when he made a face that scared the big, angry dog next door. He scared Gran and the mailman. His dad told him, "I don't know if you've heard Josh, but if you are making a face and the wind changes, it will stay that way." Josh scoffed.
When the wind changed one day while he made his best face ever, Josh heaved and squeezed it to smooth out his face. How could he change it?

My Sister Sif.......2007-02-15
I wasn't very impressed by this book. It was colorful and fairly well written, yet somehow, it seemed as lifeless as an artificial flower. It wasn't easy to get into and I lost interest before I'd even got halfway through. The story itself was bizarre, and for the most part, torpid; the casual indifference and bluntness to which we're treated to the sudden appearance of mermen, telepathic dolphins and even dwarves(!) only seemed to make it worse. After fifty or so pages, I skipped straight to the end, only to find more of the same. Heck, I only paid 99 cents for my copy and I still feel ripped off.
Intriguing and hard to put down!.......2007-01-17
I truly love this book. It was one of those books that held my interest the whole way through and was definitely worth the time. This story includes fantasy, adventure, a bit of romance, and a whole new way to look at mermaids. I really recommend it to anyone who loves reading!
Good fantasy for the younger readers........1998-11-29
There was a great cast of characters. I enjoyed the futuristic fantasy. I'm in seventh grade and found this book very intresting.
