It is widely discussed in fire service circles that this text is an amalgom of FDNY tactical bulletins and other internal documents, such as Ladders 3 and Ladders 4. If so, it offers useful information for fire problems most of us routinely encounter. The 3rd edition has hideously tiny print and is over run by wordiness, but does have additional chapters on WMD issues as well as townhouse/garden apartment fires. There is new text intersprised all through out the book. Norman is a tough read - passive voice, run on sentences and double negatives - but the material is still worth digging through. And hey, the bulding classification codes from the 1st and 2nd editions got corrected.
A must for any working firefighter.

I found this book to be very informative. It helps answer the "what if this happens" questions that every firefighter ponders when they have time to reflect. I definitely recommend picking up this book whether you are an actual officer or firefighter.

This book is full of valuable information, and has helped to fill in some gaps in my understanding of certain firefighting tactics that I simply have not learned in my five years in the fire service. This book simply has more valuable, pertinent information than any other fire/rescue text I have ever read. Incredible!

The books only flaw is the photos are of very poor quality.

It is full of a great wealth of knowledge and insight. Awesome text, very easy, interesting read.

I highly recommend this book.

The New Essentials.......2002-11-16

This is quite possibly the finest tactical instruction manual on the market. Despite regional variences in tactics, this book will expand your understanding of your current SOP's and allow you to try something new with a proven record. Masterfully written and not the boring text you're used to in textbooks. This is a must read for anyone wishing to advance in the fire service...truly a new essential.

The Fantastic Awkward Nature of Existence.......2007-06-07

The first time I saw some paintings by John Currin they appealed to me right away. I did not need a second look or to hear some long winded explination like from art school about why I should appreciate them. The simple fact is they connected to me and I picked up my first book on him.

He is an excellent painter but that is just incidental to his work. There are a lot of excellent painters in this world but skill alone does nothing for art. An artist has to have something to communicate, something to show beyond his talent as a painter or draftsman. John Currin definitely has something to show. He paints mostly women but that too I feel is mostly incidental. Men as a rule of thumb love to paint women. It's a tremendous lure to paint that which we find so beautiful.

To me, I love his work because with no more than a simple pose, or a well painted women with a heavily modeled pasty face, he is able to communicate the awkward nature of day to day life. Figures with uncomfortable inner thoughts and feelings show overly affected smiles or looks. Stamford After Brunch, Park City Girl, The Activists, and Brown Lady all have this feel to them. Something is lurking in the inner psyches of these people. Women they may be, but people they surly are and something is a bit off below the surface of their lives. The masks that we all put on are communicated with the actual heavily modeled pasty made up faces of some of the women.

There is also a restless longing in many of his paintings. Paintings such as: Lovers 1993, Lovers in the Country 1993, Portrait 1993, and The Never Ending Story. These paintings seem to show that something is missing from the lives of the men. In a few of them a woman is present but she seems to be there for her man, perhaps to help aid him in what ever way she can. The man in each case appears like some kind of bizarre perversion of Abe Lincoln meets Uncle Sam meets Colonel Sanders with some Mr. Rogers thrown in. These paintings, to me, have a very distinct American feel to them. All 4 paintings have clouds and appear to be set in large open spaces where the man is gazing far and wide while he thinks about what it is exactly that is missing from his life or his country. The men and women in the paintings may in fact be metaphors for America itself, looking lost like some odd flustered older man but with all the help and appreciation of a young mistress by his side.

Currin is most definitely pointing out what he likes and does not like about this world often in the same painting. Things are not clear cut black and white, good or bad, it's messier than that and more complicated.

Day to day life as a human is complicated. We all have these powerful brains and they ceaselessly function and generate thoughts and communicate ideas, impulses and urges almost all the time. I personally find life to often be quite awkward for people in general. Adulthood is mostly a veiled childhood where we think way too much about what others are doing, thinking, and how they are acting. many facades go up and come down. People see others and desire what they have, the spouce someone has, or their house, possessions, situation and the like. All the while we are bizarre animals with all sorts of odd functions that also function ceaselessly beyond our control. All the while we have the urge to sleep, eat, fornicate, and all this while we try and do better for ourselves and appear as normal as possible within the confines of what ever community we find ourselves in. For me John Currin's paintings show this day to day struggle we all have with the awkward nature of existence and the strains that having a large brain in a complex world put on a person with urges, and longings that often happen in direct contradiction to what is expected of one in this world, country, town, street, or home. Also there is the deeper thoughts that we mostly as a society tend to uncomfortably ignore. Where did we come from? Where did the universe come from? Why does anything exist at all? These thoughts are ones that as animals we are privileged to have. Still they have boggled man for ever and humans at home who are not great thinkers can contemplate this too. We all carry these unanswered questions around with us all the time. We may not know it but we carry a bit of fear with us as a result of these unanswered questions about existence and the universe every day. They are deep in the back of our minds. I sense this in some of Currin's paintings.

All this just scratches the surface of what I get from his paintings. Some of them are just beautiful portraits in their own rights and need not be viewed as more than that.

He is definitely one of the few great contemporary American painters alive today and he has his brush on the pulse of the odd facade that is exhibited with the awkward doppelgänger that is writhing just below the phony surface of this country.

A great art book, undoubtedly. It actually is a catalogue raisonné, with all the information needed on the provenance, the size and the medium. Now isn't it a bit early in Currin's career? At only 40 years old, he has yet to prove that he can stand the test of time. If you try to set aside all the hype that has been surrounding the artist (the "very dear" of the the art world, in every sense of the word "dear"), I am not sure that you will find his works worth the weight and the price of this beautiful monography...

I was so excited when the big package containing this book had arrived at my door, Currin has been one of my favourite artists and during recent years I had the pleasure of starring at many of his masterpieces from up close.
This may explain my disappointment with the selection of works & reproductions (yes, I do understand it is impossible to come close to the originals with 4 color printing, but the images in the book at least could have been larger, i dont need all this white space, and I guess theres a reason amazon didnt have a "look inside the book" for this one).

I love saying that. But seriously, I bought this book for a loved one keeping in mind it'll be a collector's item some day. The loved one is the type that handles books with white cotton gloves, since he doesn't want fingerprints or hand oils to transfer to the pages...yeah, it's like that.

This is a pricey item, but definitely worth the purchase since it was done in a limited run. The prints are gorgeous, and it follows Currin's rise to surprisingly quick fame along with what his current collections look like. He is technically brilliant (although I know a lot of art nerds would totally interject here) and his topics are always fun. How can you not stare at an oddly shaped nude woman wearing huge shades? Besides, he's the only alum that Yale can really brag about.

If you collect books or know and/or appreciate who John Currin is...go on and spend the money. You won't regret it.

The Ultimate Warrior.......2007-05-01

Most war stories aren't as graphic but Doc Bahnsen holds nothing back. War is not a business for the untrained and it is well documented that Doc trained by example. Sissies need not apply. We could certainly use more no-nonsense men of this caliber in the 21st century. I have learned a lot from reading this excellent documentary and am proud to be able to say "I knew him when".....he was a cadet at West Point.

Meeting a Warrior.......2007-04-24

Doc Bahnsen is undoubtedly a hero in the history of the United States and of the Free World. He has all the credentials to document it. Yet there is another plane of magnificance in the manner and deportment of this retired officer and gentleman. I met him by chance and immediately sensed that I was honored to be in the presence of a great man.
I read his book and it confirmed my impression. Well written and organized in a clear and concise format,this work puts the reader in the fight with "Doc" and with those soldiers at his side whose comments and narration give the reader a 360 degree view of the action.In the the thick of the battle, in mid 60's Viet Nam,you're taking "point" with a man who placed himself in harm's way in front of his troops--he never asked anything he wouldn't do himself.His decorations are countless and his units had the highest proficiency ratings "in Country". This is the story of how he did it.A great read,a great account of one of the Army's awesome men,and a great lesson about things that matter in life.
To his credit ,General Bahnsen also shares his flaws and shortcomings. His willingness to expose himself to honest criticism is refreshing in today's cloying atmosphere of political correctness.Even these failings are shared and interpreted by those who were his partners in battle and R&R. How about stealing Col.George Patton Jr's two "holer" outhouse?

An Army Legend's Own Vietnam Story.......2007-04-12

There have been hundreds, perhaps even thousands, of books written on the Vietnam War; however, all of them fail to make the deep historic impact that "American Warrior" does. I think the biggest reason for this book rising so far above the rest is Brig. Gen. John C. "Doc" Bahnsen, Jr. who along with his writing partner Wess Roberts give us a astounding personal account of Doc's two tours of duty in Vietnam (1965-66 & 1968-69).

Now the non-military public will also learn about this most remarkable man who is truly one of this nation's greatest warriors. The book moves like a man on a mission "walking point"! The reader will have no trouble becoming absorbed in Doc's combat experiences. If this were a novel no one would believe it! The man is one of those rare leaders much like General Patton was for WWII. He is bigger than life but ever so human.

The book tells it like was and the General holds little back. This is a bold accounting of a time long gone by when men who were great heroes were forgotten and ignored by our nation. Now they can read about one of those who honors the rest of us Vietnam Veterans!

This book is given The Military Writer's Society of America it highest rating of FIVE STARS! The story is a must read! I personal recommend this book! It is a nominee for the MWSA Founder's Award for 2007! Truly one of the best books ever written about Vietnam War! They just do not come much better!

Outstanding personal history.......2007-03-31

This is a well written and detailed personal memoir of the author's two tours in Viet Nam. The format - personal recollections by identified persons - interspersed with the author's first person narrative draws the reader into the action. Doc is a true warrior and, based on his actions, one of the luckiest SOBs on the planet. I consider myself fortunate to be one of Doc's classmates.

There is perhaps no medical specialty that has more misconceptions, "wives tales" and variation than Obstetrics. Williams Obstetrics is more exhaustively comprehensive than any other text for general Obstetrics. Williams has long prided itself on presenting "evidence-based medicine" - separating the wives tales from medical knowledge obtained from published studies from peer-reviewed journals. Very good comprehensive text.......2006-07-08

This book was mandatory for a forensic case law course taught by a seasoned forensic expert. It is thorough, accurate, and provides everything one needs to know before conducting forensic evaluations, as well as a significant amount of information most professionals ought to know but often don't. I recommend it as a tremendous resource for any clincian, especially those who have even a mild interest in forensic or correctional psychology.

Not a light Sunday afternoon read, this book requires time to think and digest topics. It provides outstanding survey and advanced analysis of research, U.S. laws, and policies across the major foci. While a bit dated, it probably is the best source for gaining an understanding of forensic mental health. An outstanding reference. I feel somewhat odd in reviewing this book, almost like, I'd imagine someone feels when reviewing the Bible. Well worth the price. I wish it would have an annual or biannual update.

Excellent reference, but a little outdated as of this writing (Dec. 2001). Opinions and recommendations of the authors do not in all respects reflect the majority, or even the respectible minority, of forensic psychologists and psychiatrists. Nonetheless, an excellent reference to have in your library to get the overall gist of an issue or a topic at the interface of psychology and the law. Detailed information pertaining to actual practices will need to be located elsewhere.

Best of Breed.......2001-06-09

I have used this book extensively both as teacher and practitioner for years and it remains the best available text for mental health professionals conducting evaluations for the legal system. It is also an outstanding reference for attorneys litigating mental health issues. Its greatest strength is in the criminal law area, but it is excellent in other areas of the law/mental health interface as well. Psychiatrists should not be deterred by the term "psychological" in the title; it is equally applicable to both disciplines.

Expertly done survey of the area with practical applications.......1999-10-09

If you buy only one book to gain an introduction, or update on the area of forensic psychology, this must be it. The authors have gathered legal precedent, research, illustration, and opinion, while retaining readability. It is long - especially with double column pages - but well worth it. An added feature is that the authors, through the publisher, maintain a web site for periodic updates to the book and relevent case law.

Dated contexts but durable insights.......2007-05-16

This is one in a series of several dozen volumes that comprise the "Harvard Business Review Paperback Series." Each offers direct, convenient, and inexpensive access to the best thinking on the given subject in articles originally published by the Harvard Business School Review. I strongly recommend all of the volumes in the series. The individual titles are listed at this Web site: www.hbsp.harvard.edu. The authors of various articles are among the world's most highly regarded experts on the given subject. Each volume has been carefully edited. Supplementary commentaries are also provided in most of the volumes, as is an "About the Contributors" section that usually includes suggestions of other sources that some readers may wish to explore.

Acquiring required skills and tools to effectively manage or mitigate crises is essential to the success of modern organizations. `Harvard Business Review on Crisis Management' is a collection eight essays presenting new ideas and concepts on how to manage, mitigate crises and other related key issues in a rapidly changing business environment.

Some of the essays in this collection are written by leading management consultants and CEOs. Topics covered include; `strategic approaches to product recalls', `leadership', `what happens when an executive defects' and how companies can develop better media policies and plans as part of crisis management and preparedness.

My favorite is Norman R Augustine's essay titled `Managing the Crisis You Tried to Prevent'. In this well researched essay, Augustine describes six stages of a crisis drawing lessons from several well-known crises. The important issue emerging is that "almost every crisis contains within itself' the seeds of failures as well as the "roots of failure." Drawing quotations from Shakespeare and Oscar Wilde, the author provides very useful insights into understanding, managing and preventing a crisis.

This book is a useful tool for executives and managers who need to upgrade their knowledge or gain access to leading experts on topics related to crisis management.

Starts out slow and then drags it out,however the the plot all comes together in the end

A slave girl's view of Gor .......2007-01-19

Witness of Gor was another of the slave girl novels. It focuses on a captured Earth woman who is captured and enslaved on Gor. After her initial slave training she is sold to Treve as a prison slave. She is selected because of her almost complete ignorance of Gor, its geography and politics. Her job is to feed and care for a prisoner who was once the Ubar of Ar, and her ignorance prevents her from telling him anything of his current location or the political situation. What she doesn't know, she can't tell. Personally, I get tired of the mindless and seemingly endless repetitious, "I'm glad I'm a slave," conversations. About three fourths of the way through the book something happens. There is an attempt to free Marlenus. Some assassins are sent from Cos to eliminate the prisoner, but they underestimate his skill and cunning. Finally our slave girl is sold to Ar and then finds out that as a witness to the identity of the prisoner she has been marked for death. Tarl Cabot is mentioned only once in the book, in passing in a conversation about who might be the best swordsman on Gor, perhaps equal to the prisoner. We learn nothing more of space aliens or Priest Kings. Our view is that of an Earth girl made slave, one who might be the least politically knowledgeable woman on Gor. If you particularly enjoy the slave girls in Norman's novels you may like this one. Its not an action thriller.

This book completes my collection of the Gor series. I have not read it as
yet but I am on issue 19 so it won't be long. The book arrived in good time and order. Looks new and I can't wait to read it.

This last book in the Gor series follows the usual formula of daring deeds performed on the Counter-Earth world of Gor. Told from the perspective of a unsuspecting slavegirl, it explores yet another arena in the John Norman world of Masters and their helplessly beautiful captives against a backdrop of politics and heroism.

The book arrived in new condition , excellently packaged, in extremely quick time.

A must have for those interested in the Gor series by John Norman, or for those interested in science fantasy style novels.

it is everything I thaught it would be and more, the book was in great condition and reading through it norman has done it again, very excellent read if your into the gorean novels. now if he will just get the next one published so we can all read it.

This is an excellent book for studying advanced math. Important concepts clearly explained with good matlab examples. But I was surprised to find this book titled "Engineering Math" with the miss out of some thing like probability and random variables which are of the critical importance for Electronics/Communications students.

If you are not already a superuser of MATLAB or a mathematician and want to choose one single book on MATLAB that also brings a solid math base, this is the one. The authors have chosen the subjects very well, with emphasys on the use of mathematical principles coupled with the use of the computing power offered by MATLAB.

In addition to a sound presentation of concepts - without however being extensive (or boring) on theoretical details that probably would not be relevant - this book addresses most areas of University Math (Physical Sciences undergraduate curriculum) with a wealth of good practical programming examples. I specially liked the chapters on Eigenvectors and Eigenvalues, those on Differential equations, Fourier analysis and the simple but very clear and didatic one on Discrete sytems.

In summary, although not a complete text, the subjects addressed in this book are so well presented that it can be forgiven for not covering some areas (like complex variables and calculus of variations, to name only two). There is no waste of pages in this book, but as a suggestion for future enhancement I would mention the inclusion of a chapter dedicated to exploring the graphing power available in MATLAB.

Also as a reference, for most needs you'll probably be able to start doing something productive right away after reading. Well worth its price!

Excellent reference for engineers.......2000-08-07

This is an excellent reference book not only for matlab, also an excellent reference book for the basic concepts such as Fourier Analysis. I think any engineers who work in electric design filed must have a copy.
