Introduction from the Author

My first experience living in New York City was when I moved into my NYU dorm and had no idea how to get anywhere. The week before classes started, I would wander the streets staring at my new surroundings, taking in every vendor, every boutique, every pigeon. At the end of each day, I came back to my new home with the sights of the city swirling through my head, and I was excited to be living and going to school in the heart of everything Id seen. When I had applied to NYU, I was looking for such experiences. When I arrived here, I found them.

Im still excited at the beginning of every semester, knowing that I will continue to live and study in New York. In fact, a big reason students come to NYU is that its urban location leaves room for endless learning, internship, and entertainment possibilities. New York Citys fast-paced, stylish environment draws many applications from all over the world. But while the initial allure of the school may be its desirable locale, when students arrive, they find out what it is to study in a truly diverse, intellectual atmosphere.

Coupled with New York Universitys outstanding tradition of professors and academics is its notoriously ever-expanding nature. Each year, improvements are made to the University, as evidenced by the opening of the Palladium Residence Hall and facilities and the unveiling of the Kimmel Student Center, which provides a place for students to learn and study.

Whatever your reason for coming to NYU, know that it will be a thrilling journey if you take advantage of all the city and the University have to offer. This books purpose is to show you what is available at New York University so you can make the best informed decision possible and even find your own adventure.

Meredith Turley, Author
New York University
Wittgenstein, Mind and Meaning: Towards a Social Conception of Mind
Meredith Williams Manufacturer: Routledge ProductGroup: Book Binding: Paperback Similar Items:
ASIN: 0415287561 |
Book Description
Wittgenstein, Mind and Meaning offers a provocative re-reading of Wittgenstein's later writings on language and mind, and explores the tensions between Wittgenstein's ideas and contemporary cognitivist conceptions of the mental. Williams's theme throughout is the anti-individualism that she takes to underlie Wittgenstein's criticism of Cartesian thought.
This book addresses both Wittgenstein's later works as well as contemporary issues in philosophy of mind thought and lays the foundation for a social conception of mind. It provides fresh insight into the later Wittgenstein and raises vital questions about the foundations of cognitivism and its wider implications for psychology and cognitive science.
Customer Reviews:
Brilliant pedagogic discourse. Difficult but enlightening.......2005-01-01
Highest Recommendation.......2000-07-23
An outstanding and original treatment of Wittgenstein,,.......1999-09-19
Her work is, on its face, an attack against neo-cartesianism in the behavioral and neurosciences, but its scope is actually far wider than that. She takes on a range of currently fashionable positions in philosophy and logic with a deft and professional style which makes her a unique contributor to the debates in which she engages so powerfully.
I recommend this book to all serious philosophers and students of mind, psychology, social sciences and biology.
You will encounter in this text a truly original voice in the contemporary intellectual scene.

Not Christmas without this story.......2001-01-30
It was a great relief for me to find that Amazon.com had "Christmas Every Day" because the little book my sister brought home in the early 1960's is quickly becoming too fragile to handle. Thanks Amazon.com, someday I hope to read "Christmas Every Day" to my grandchildren.

Decolonizing the Academy: African Diaspora Studies
Manufacturer: Africa World Press ProductGroup: Book Binding: Paperback ASIN: 159221066X |
Book Description
Decolonizing the Academy asserts that the academy is perhaps the most colonized space. As we enter the twenty-first century, this has become even clearer now that the academy is one of the primary sites for the production and re-production of ideas that serve the interests of colonizing powers. Operating at the macro level in terms of the state and at the micro level in various applications, these interests include the organization of the disciplines, the marginalization of interdisciplinary studies, the re-assertion of masculinities, and the operations of class, privilege, and hierarchy. This collection of essays argues that African diaspora theory has the possibility of interrupting the current colonizing process and re-engaging the decolonizing process at the level of the mind, as emphasized by Ngugi wa Thiong'o in an earlier contribution. In addition, the collection asserts that this will be an ongoing project worthy of being undertaken in a variety of fields of study as we confront the challenges of the twenty-first century.

Salt Fork State Park, OH (Images of America)
Meredith Bowman , William Kerrigan , and Alicia Seng Manufacturer: Arcadia Publishing ProductGroup: Book Binding: Paperback ASIN: 0738541338 Release Date: 2007-03-12 |
Book Description
Salt Fork State Park is Ohio's largest park, covering about 20,000 acres of rolling, forested terrain just eight miles northeast of Cambridge. Despite the park's timeless wilderness feel, for almost 150 years farmers worked this land, many occupying the same property for five generations. In the 1960s when the park was created, evidence of that agrarian past quickly receded. Over time, new forest reclaimed fields and pastures, and wildlife returned in abundance. All but one of the region's farms, mills, covered bridges, and schoolhouses were removedthe Kennedy Stone House Museum lives on as a reminder of the region's past, dedicated to preserving the stories of the families who once made a life on these lands. Salt Fork State Park celebrates the heritage of the parklands, offers glimpses into the lives, labor, and leisure of its residents, and points the curious explorer toward some of the many remnants of the park's agrarian past.
