5 out of 5 stars Perfect for secondary school teachers.......2002-04-20

I reveiwed this book to use in a college science writing class and found that it is--as the book's preface says--"addressed to secondary school teachers who are interested in developing good student writing in the areas of science and math." The book is filled with sound instruction on Instruction--literally how to teach this course, or implement some of the ideas involved in science writing into a high school curriculum. It has workshop ideas, some lesson plans, ideas. What's really fantastic about it is the number of sample essays in the book from student essays to (mostly) professional samples. These samples range from Jane Goodall and Stephen Jay Gould to William Carlos Williams and Robert Louis Stevenson--opening the art of science writing to fields outside of "strict" science. It allows students (and teachers) who want to write about/teach science choose from many different styles and genres. If I were a high school teacher--I would definitely think about using this book if I wanted to introduce an element of science writing into the classroom.

      Book Description

New work from one of America's most original experimental poets.

Comprised almost entirely of never-before-collected poems, Scarlet Tanager is Bernadette Mayer's first collection of new work in nearly a decade. Mayer, "one of the most original writers of her generation" (The Washington Post), has mixed together here delightful epigrams ("The Mammal Epigram": "Sexually / it's cute"), long-line free verse, and her astonishing sonnets. There are also curious translations of Mayer poems into joking, free-styling French, which are then re-translated back into English, landing somewhere extremely witty and quite some ways from the original. There is no one writing today who can touch Bernadette Mayer for sheer pleasure and throw-away brilliance.

Bernadette Mayer is an amazing poet. Her poetry ranges from experimental to witty to extremely personal. I loved reading these poems. They even inspired some experimental poetry of my own.

        Book Description

Perhaps Bernadette Mayer's greatest work, Midwinter Day was written on December 22, 1978, at 100 Main Street, Lenox, Massachusetts. "Midwinter Day," as Alice Notley noted, "is an epic poem about a daily routine." A poem in six parts, Midwinter Day takes us from awakening and emerging from dreams through the whole day-morning, afternoon, evening, night-to dreams again: ". . . a plain introduction to modes of love and reason/Then to end I guess with love, a method to this winter season/Now I've said this love it's all I can remember/Of Midwinter Day the twenty-second of December//Welcome sun, at last with thy softer light/That takes the bite from winter weather/And weaves the random cloth of life together/And drives away the long black night!"

          Book Description

This anthology presents material selected from the collection of Angel Hair magazine and books edited by Anne Waldman and Lewis Warsh between 1966 and 1978. Included are substantial sections of writing--in some cases entire books--from an impressive range of poets including Clark Coolidge, Alice Notley, Hannah Weiner, Robert Creeley, Bernadette Mayer, Kenward Elmslie, Tom Clark, Joanne Kyger, Bill Berkson, Ted Greenwald, Lorenzo Thomas, John Wieners, Joe Brainard, Ron Padgett, as well as Waldman and Warsh, among many others. From the nascent St. Mark's Poetry Project on the Lower East Side of Manhattan to Bolinas and Boulder, Angel Hair published an idiosyncratic cross-section of innovative writing in distinctive format, becoming one of the longest-lived and most influential publishers on the small press scene. The anthology of literary writings is supplemented with brief memoirs by more than twenty writers, and the book also includes an annotated checklist by Aaron Fischer and Steven Clay that comprises a citation and photograph of each of the approximately eighty books, magazines, broadsides and catalogues issued by the Press.

Bernadette Mayer got me into sonnets with this wonderful book. Her style is remarkably like that of Gertrude Stein so imagine Steinian sonnets with a twist. A refreshing ramble which will have your imagination running wild.
