5 out of 5 stars Interesting book.......2006-11-10

This book is interesting not just because the stories are good, but it's also interesting to look at stories that depict a future that has since passed.

5 out of 5 stars Exellent.......2006-03-24

This little book has some intresting sc-fi tales,I stumbled across it in a small ass town and got it very cheap and it's not disappointing at all.

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful.......2005-07-12

If you enjoy SciFi then this one's for you. These are obviously very short stories since 50 of 'em are crammed into such a small book - but many of them have a hidden depth that transcends their brevity. Some are deeply philosophical, and many contain clever Rod-Serling-esque twists at the end. Very highly recommended. Turn off the TV and read this instead.

5 out of 5 stars The best SciFi collection ever.......2005-05-02

This book was my first scifi short story collection. I was given it when I twelve by my great aunt. It is so incredibly classic and so powerful, it probably slanted me toward sciences even more than I had been.

If you enjoy Gardner Dozois (editor) anthologies, you'll love this. If you think Dozois' anthologies are sometimes weak, well... you've got Asimov, Clarke, Heinlein, and Leiber to name a few in this 1963 packed paperback. The only regret you will have is that there are only 287 pages.

5 out of 5 stars Great bite-size Science Fiction for fans and newcomers.......2000-08-05

I have read this book 5 years ago. The stories are great and the writing techniques superb. Some stories are only a page long and yet they will stay in your head for a long long time. I loaned my first copy to a friend and he lost it! Bought the second copy from Amazon and promised myself not to lend it out again!

Read it and get hooked to Science Fiction if you are not already a fan.

While Howard Phillips Lovecraft was closing the final chapter of his writing career, Fritz Reuter Leiber was only beginning to open his own. The year was 1936 and Jonquil Leiber, Fritz's first wife, sent a letter on her own initiative to Lovecraft, knowing that her husband had been an avid admirer of his work, ever since his first reading of "The Colour out of Space" and hoping that Lovecraft's presence in Fritz's slow-paced writing career might be the source of inspiration he so dearly needed. Lovecraft replied promptly on November 2 of that year, the seed of an invigorating correspondence, which lasted till Lovecraft's passing. Fritz Leiber and H.P. Lovecraft: Writers of the Dark presents Lovecraft's letters to Leiber, an impressive selection of Leiber's fiction which shows Lovecraft's influence, and a selection of Leiber's essays on Lovecraft and Matters Lovecraftian. Book Description

In the ancient city of Lankhmar, two men forge a friendship in battle. The red-haired barbarian Fafhrd left the snowy reaches of Nehwon looking for a new life while the Grey Mouser, an apprentice magician, fled after finding his master dead. These bawdy brothers-in-arms cement a friendship that leads them through the wilds of Nehwon facing thieves, wizards, princesses, and the depths of their desires and fears. Superb writing and brilliant, believable characterizations highlight the first entry in Leiber’s seminal series.

3 out of 5 stars Vengeance, magic and a heavily structured plot........2007-06-02

The three stories inside this book, of Fafhrd and Gray Mouser, remind me a little of the Thieves World series. But, unlike those stories, these stories feel forced, their characters unrealistic and too powerful, their plots too simple and the settings too confused with overwhelming details that are not needed. While some details, details that I would enjoy about the history or background of the people or lands, are totally missing.
For example, I wanted to know more about the city of Lankhmar, yet the third story barely touches on it. True, there are only three stories, so how much information can I get about the city? But I still felt cheated - it WAS the title of the book. With just under 200 pages I felt as if I paid too much. And that's rare for me, no matter how bad the book is.

5 out of 5 stars Masterpiece of Fantasy.......2007-03-10

Leiber is a true master of sword and sorcery, and is probably the third most important author, just behind Tolkien and Howard, in creating the genre of fantasy as we know it today. Leiber penned this novel before fantasy became a regurgitory practice producing an infinite number of Tolkien and Howard clones. Though he may not have shaped the genre as much as the other mentioned artists, he has probably contributed more to the building of it than any other author besides those two. Sure there were authors before these three, but they mostly influenced Tolkien and Lewis and little else in the genre. It was Tolkien, Howard, and Leiber who spawned dungeons and dragons, the surge of fantasy trilogy, and Dungeons and Dragons. Though it's evident Leiber was heavily influenced by Howard, his own light shines through with an unbridled energy.
The story is written artistically, with excellent description and style, and his main characters are thoroughly realized. Unlike Tolkien and Howard, Leiber seems to change his writing style for every Fafhrd and Grey Mouser story. The early, passionate, raw style in this offering might just be my favorite.
It's important to remember that at the time of this writing, Leiber had little to base his muse of fantasy on except Tolkien and Howard. Fantasy authors of today have alot more material from which to draw inspiration, and yet most aren't able to pen a work as fascinating, original, and as fully realized as Leiber's Lankhmar series.

5 out of 5 stars Fantasy in its purest form........2007-03-09

The first in the Swords series by Fritz Leiber, Swords and Deviltry follow the intertwined destinies of two young adventurers: Fafhrd, a barbarian from the Northern Wastes, and Mouser, a wizardling apprentice from the outskirts of the great city of Lankhmar.

The book is divided into three major portions. The first of which is of Fafhrd's exile/escape from his ice-witch mother Mor and the snow-village Cold Corners. The second portion is of the wizard's apprentice Mouser who sought revenge on the lord who killed his wizard master, and headed to Lankhmar with the lord's daughter. The third portion is of Mouser and Fafhrd meeting for the very first time, and of their subsequent venturings into the Thieve's Guild.

    1 out of 5 stars A waste of money.......2007-01-27

If it was possible to give no stars, that's what I would have given this book. Halfway through the book, and I had to put it down. I was bored silly! The books age made itself known with how all the women and men were portrayed, in ways you only see now in parodies. They were either controlling/manipulative/emotionless witches (both figuratively and literally), hardened prostitutes who would willingly sleep with whoever was stronger (even if the person was a murderer), or spineless. Why couldn't there have been some fairly well-balanced females like the ones we see in, I dunno, the Pern books or the Valdemar books? The only male character I even partially enjoyed was Mouse, known later in the books as The Grey Mouser. The Tarma to his Kethry, is just aggravating. ::snorts:: Not that Fafhrd would have much a chance to be anything else with the role models he grew up with. Perhaps it gets better later in the book/series, but I couldn't stand reading it long enough to find out. I am highly disappointed. This book was highly praised and reviewed at both sites I checked, and I can't see why. The descriptions of the lands are nothing special, and neither are the characters. I do not plan on spending anymore of my money on this series.

5 out of 5 stars The Father of Swords and Sorcery.......2005-03-08

The Fafrhd and Grey Mouser novels and short stories are very influential on all modern fantasy and contempory fiction and should be bought and studied by any reader who considers himself a fantasy buff.

The idea of two companions adventuring across a fictional world, both opposites in terms of physical and mental attributes is a common genre, appearing in Lord of the Rings, Batman and Robin and almost all super hero stories.

Leiber creates real characters, they whore, drink, steal and murder out of a whim unlike Tolkiens unrealistic ideal characters such as Legolas and Aragorn.

Leiber was also the first writer to introduce the 'Swords and Sorcery Genre' which has given birth to literally thousands of novels and short stories.

In this first novel we are told how the barbarian and thief meet and are told of their two wizardly mentors, Sheelba and Niguable, which provides context for the rest of the novels and short stories.

Leiber explores the ideas of morality and civilization with Fafrhds contrasting experiences of the Cold Waste and Lankhmar, while the Grey Mouser, considered one of the finest characters ever to be created in the history of modern literature, explores sexual humour and farce which can be compared to Chaucer's 'A Millers Tale'.

In short, any and all readers who consider themselves members of the contempory fiction community MUST read this book.

5 out of 5 stars Fantastic Fantasy. A must read........2007-01-19

The Fafhrd and Gray Mouser series is a great find for the fantasy reader. I highly recommend all the books in this series. Fritz Lieber is a fantastic writer, if you have never read his books you are in for a treat.

The Lankhmar series has two main characters Fafhrd the Barbarian and the Gray Mouser. Fafhrd is a barbarian and thief. The Gray Mouser is a small quick-witted thief and sometime wizard. They are best friends and go on many fantastic adventures together, which are told as a series of short stories. This book is a reprinting of two books: Swords and Deviltry (The First Book of Fafhrd and the Gray Mouser); and Swords Against Death (The Second Book of Fafhrd and The Gray Mouser).

The first book describes where Fafhrd and the Gray Mouser come from and how they meet. In the second book Fafhrd the Barbarian and the Gray mouser lose their first loves to death, and they set forth on a quest that leads them throughout Newhon on a series of adventures where they finally steal the mask of death from Death himself.

To sum up, if you like fantasy, you'll like this book.

5 out of 5 stars Must read for any lover Fantasy Lover.......2005-09-23

Fritz Leiber is without a doubt one of the the most over-looked of a group of authors that are basically the fathers of the modern Fantasy genre. Ill met in Lankhmar is an excellent collection of short stories detailing the meeting and early adventures of the two most renowned Heroes/Rogues in the fabulous world of Nehwon Fafhrd and the Gray Mouser. What is most enjoyable about the stories is the crisp action filled pace Lieber sets while still managing to describe everything in a way that gives you a feeling of immersion in the rich, exoctic world of Nehwon and the vast City of Lankhmar which is the Heroes main base of operations. The main characters are exceptional creations. Two lovable never do wells who usually emerge from there various adventures victorious but with little or nothing to show for it. There is a comic bent to their various escapades that is very enjoyable. Overall, just a great collection of short stories.

5 out of 5 stars Most Underappreciated Work of Fantasy.......2004-03-28

Poor Fritz Leiber. He has never truly received the credit he deserves for fostering the fantasy genre. Along with the old Conan stories and Tolkien's Lord of the Rings, this is amongst the most influential works of fantasy fiction.

Fascinating worldbuilding, intrigue and exciting characters abound in these tales, all told with Leiber's exceptional artistic skills. Not only are the plots and personalities compelling, but Leiber has a magical rhythm to his storytelling and descriptions. This is one of the few stories that is on my "reread" list.

Pick this up and you'll love the stories--and when you look at the copyright date of these tales, you'll come to appreciate just how much Leiber has affected the fantasy authors that have come since.

4 out of 5 stars Short Stories with Fun and Action.......2004-03-06

The book reads like a series of short stories. Cele Goldsmith commissioned Fritz Leiber to write a series of Fahrd and Gray Mouser stories for Fantastic Stories pulp (one of the two early plups edited by Cele Goldsmith). That says it all. They are a fast read with plenty of action and very little of the long, dreary and seemingly endless descriptions of scenery etc.. found in many other books. The stories revolve around characters and the deeds of those characters. Unlike Jordan's Wheel of time series, which provides pages and pages of explanation of the types and colours of curtains found in each room of a house, something happens on every page.

Fahrd is like a Viking big, lustful and not scared to kill. Gray Mouser is an apprentice wizard that is not scared to use the black arts to get revenge eg. burning enemies to a crisp. Forget political correctness which is expected in so much of the literature these days, you will not find it in this book. It is like the old Star Trek (kill anything that gets in your way) and unlike the Next Generation (lets us open up the lines of communication so we can have meaningful dialogue).

If you like short stories that are well written, do yourself a favour and get a copy of this book.

    4 out of 5 stars Classic Swords & Sorcery.......2000-06-12

This book is the earliest adventures of Fafhrd and the Grey Mouser, their early lives, how they met and adventures. The novellas are rich in detail of the surroundings and show that the world of Nehwon is well-developed. Fafhrd and The Grey Mouser's interactions are realistic (except perhaps for the high-flown language) and kept me turning pages eagerly. Lots of hack'n'slash as well as intellectual puzzles, a few moments of hair-raising suspense and some definite sizzle. Classic swords & sorcery with very little mumbo-jumbo and no complicated explanations.

        Book Description

From the moment when they first met, in the commission of the same, audacious theft, Fafhrd, the giant barbarian warrior from the Cold Waste, and the Gray Mouser, master thief, novice wizard and expert swordsman, felt no ordinary affinity. Forged over the gleam of sharpened steel as, back to back, they faced their foes, theirs was a friendship that would take them from adventure to misadventure across all of Nehwon, from the caves of the inner earth to the waves of the outer sea. But it was in the dark alleys and noisome back streets of the great fog-shrouded city of Lankhmar that they became legends. THE FIRST BOOK OF LANKHMAR includes the first four volumes of the hugely enjoyable Swords series.
