5 out of 5 stars If There Were 10 Stars..........2007-02-20

Mr. L'Amour is a favorite, but one I'd almost forgotten. I read many of his novels while riding submarines in the early 80's. When, by chance, I saw his short stories, I bought all four volumes. Just finished volume 1, and, my goodness...this man was a treasure. Right always triumphs, the good guy gets the girl...I could go on. But be sure, these are well-written and captivating. There's one "Sackett" story that made me laugh out-loud on every page, and a story about rustlers that warms the heart, while compelling the reader to admire Mr. L'Amour's extraordinary story-telling capability. Get all four volumes---great read!

5 out of 5 stars Excellent collection of short stories.......2007-01-11

While I'm not a Louis L'Amour fan, my father is. We gave it to him for Christmas and he couldn't stop talking about how nice the gift was. The short stories are just the right amount of time for sitting in a Doctors Office or waiting for someone else.

We purchased the same volume in Large Print for a 93 year old friend with failing eyesight. He had the same comments. Excellent collection!

5 out of 5 stars Louis L'Amour at his best.......2006-07-25

An excellent introduction to one of the greatest American storytellers. A very good gift to anyone who admires American Western courage, independence, and sense of honor.

5 out of 5 stars I Just Love These Stories.......2006-05-12

My grandpa used to read these to me when I was in gradeschool from old-fashioned looking books that he had a lot of. He always wanted to read me a whole novel, but I was never visiting long enough so he read me stories and some of the ones I still remember all these years later are in this collection. I have always wanted to write a western and am working on one because I loved them so much as a child. This is a really nice collection that is full of super stories so get it.

Book Description

Here is the kind of authentically detailed epic novel that has become Louis L'Amour's hallmark. It is the compelling story of U.S. Air Force Major Joe Mack, a man born out of time. When his experimental aircraft is forced down in Russia and he escapes a Soviet prison camp, he must call upon the ancient skills of his Indian forebears to survive the vast Siberian wilderness. Only one route lies open to Mack: the path of his ancestors, overland to the Bering Strait and across the sea to America. But in pursuit is a legendary tracker, the Yakut native Alekhin, who knows every square foot of the icy frontier--and who knows that to trap his quarry he must think like a Sioux.

5 out of 5 stars "back in time".......2007-03-30

I am a big Louis L'Amour fan and have read most of his books. I love the Sacketts, the Kilkenny trilogy, and I guess everything he has written except The Haunted Mesa. Well, I wasn't expecting much from Last of the Breed, but I should have -its one of his best!! The ending is marvelous. enjoy.

5 out of 5 stars Going Savage.......2007-01-05

I liked this book. It was an interesting mix of western novel adventure situated in a more contemporary time yet in a still primitive Soviet Union. I found the concept of being a modern savage and not only unashamed but proud of the fact, unexpectedly refreshing. I couldn't be that person or really want to. However I enjoyed the adventure and it certainly did speak to me. I recommend "Last of the breed."

5 out of 5 stars Spellbinding.......2006-09-30

To those detractors who have disparaged this book on the grounds of:
1) It's boring, or
2) the ending is unresolved,

I say to you, PSHAW! This book is about a long struggle, a man against the elements, captors, and himself. The book was boring if you're the type that watches Survivor and has the attention span of a gnat. But getting in to this character was a pleasure, as is this novel. The ending was necessary; wouldn't you just love to have all those loose ends tied up, all confrontations spelled out, like . . . a comic book? A Saturday morning cartoon?

This book is amazing. Read every word, and read it alone.

4 out of 5 stars Good enough to read over and over.......2006-03-22

This is a book that I enjoyed so much, I passed it along. First to one son, then to another son, then to a friend, and so forth. Everytime I read it, I feel better about myself and my ability to overcome adversity. It's so good, I'm going to buy it again, and send it on its journey through my family and friends once again.

5 out of 5 stars Absolutely positive.......2006-02-05

One of the reasons I enjoy reading is that while reading, I am allowed to insert myself into the story, to one degree or another. In this book, not only am I able to do this, but I am encouraged by the author to do this. That makes this a book that is not only good literature, but makes ME part of the story! I am at a loss to explain how the author accomplished this, but he did. Bravo!

Book Description

The fourth volume of Louis L’Amour’s collected short stories features more than forty of the master’s greatest adventure tales in a keepsake edition to cherish for generations. This unique collection gathers stories guaranteed to thrill and delight readers again and again, establishing why Louis L’Amour is truly America’s favorite storyteller.

Louis L’Amour’s tales of adventure cannot be surpassed for sheer storytelling excitement, and they stand as a testament to his legendary appeal. Here are timeless stories of danger and daring, wanderlust and heroism, filled with ordinary men and women facing often insurmountable challenges with courage, dignity, honor–and heart.

Perhaps never before has a single volume contained so many breathtaking thrills: from the down-on-his-luck fortune hunter who risks everything to save a diamond-hunting couple walking straight into a jungle massacre to the mystery “hero” aboard a downed commercial plane dangling six hundred feet above certain doom. You’ll trek across the harsh steppes of East Asia with an American widow and her young son among a fierce nomadic warrior people, and you’ll relive a harrowing tale of survival at sea against thirst, madness, and the elements as a common seaman redefines extraordinary courage as simply “doing his job.”

Whether joining an American captain running a cargo ship through Japanese-controlled waters during World War II, only to find his vessel hijacked by traitorous pirates, or marveling at the resourcefulness of a young woman pushed to the limits of endurance as she flees a killer through a primeval forest, these adrenaline-laced tales of mystery, suspense, murder, and survival never let up and will keep your heart pounding long after the final page.

From those numbering a few intense pages to novella-length works, the tales in this action-packed anthology bear all the trademarks of the master’s touch–the historical accuracy, memorable characters, and timeless themes that have earned Louis L’Amour his unique place among American writers.

5 out of 5 stars Interesting collection of short stories.......2007-05-08

I bought this to take on vacation, although it is rather heavey to carry through airports. I have only read the first few stories, however they are filled with drama and intrigue that take you to strange lands. So far they are filled with adventure and I look forward to spending more time with these stories. I would guess that Louis L'Amour westerns would be equally exciting.

3 out of 5 stars short stories l'amour, vol 4.......2007-03-29

5 out of 5 stars Product review.......2007-01-16

Arrived in good shape and to me way ahead of when I expected it.

5 out of 5 stars More than just stories - A lifetime of ADVENTURE!.......2006-11-01

There is more to this book than just the old pulp fiction. It has interesting stories about Louis own life and adventures. While the adventure stories are action packed and thrilling there are also several higher quality tales where the writing is at least as good a Louis' novels if not occasionally better! There are also many poignant stories about Louis' personal life and the world he experienced as a young man traveling the globe. Much of the book follows Louis' early travels to places like China, Japan, Indonesia, and Europe.

There is also a web site just about this book (LouisLAmourGreatAdventure) which offers loads of additional materials including maps, film and sound clips, detailed mock ups of ships and airplanes etc, all related to the stories, adventures and life of my favorite author!

5 out of 5 stars Think of this as Sackett's Land: Part 2.......2006-08-13

Sackett's Land and To the Far Blue Mountains make a complete story of the life and times of the Sackett progenitor. The combination is entirely satisfactory. L'Amour had the ability to tell the story well, and he developed that ability with years of work and research. It is probably fortunate for Sackett enthusiasts that he wrote the first books in the series later in his writing career. We benefit from his seasoned skills.

As in his westerns, in this book L'Amour focuses on what he finds interesting and what he thinks the reader will like to know. For the most part, he doesn't go into the technical detail that some authors pursue, but he paints a clear picture. The reader has a feeling of being there, or the strong sense that they could be there, right along with our hero.

The Sackett family saga is the story of an American family. Like all of L'Amour's work, it is wholesome and educational. He consistently hits on themes that his readers recognize, the importance of education and critical thinking, respect for our fellow creatures and the world in which we live, loyalty to family and friends, and taking positive action to shape one's own life. All that and a fun story too, for the cost of five bucks.

5 out of 5 stars A superbly written adventure story.......2004-04-05

Dramatically narrated by John Curless, To The Far Blue Mountains is an flawlessly recorded audiobook presentation of yet another of Louis L'Amour's classic western novels featuring the hardy endurance of the Sackett clan as they addressed the challenges of life in the Old West. To The Far Blue Mountains follows Barnabas Sackett, who is on the run with his steadfast wife Abigail and his only escape is to the west. This is a superbly written adventure story of earning a life for oneself on the frontier, surviving all manner of hazards both human and environmental, and eventually prospering despite the hostilities of nature and man alike. To The Far Blue Mountains is an enthusiastically recommended audiobook for personal and community library collections!

3 out of 5 stars A mixed bag.......2003-04-21

I picked up this book because the intro on the back cover sounded good and I've liked almost every L'amour book I've read. Its written in a first person narrative as though he was sitting across from you on the couch telling the story.

The first half of the book is terrific, following his escape from England. We learn of his thirst to be out in the wild open spaces of the newly discovered America, he is falsy accused and is running from the law collecting people to join him as he describes the new beginnings they can have in the New World. Its very tightly written (though I think his escape from prison was way too easy) and you really love the character.

Once the group got to America things changed. In an effort to show the WHOLE life of Barnabas the whole story changes, now we have 50 years of history in 100 pages. So the narrative changes from a day-by-day upbeat story where friends are joining the group to a list of significant events, usually where one of the group dies from an indian raid. It becomes a series of "we built a fort", "xxx died in an indian raid", "the fort burned down", "we went down to sea and traded our skins for supplies", "yyyy died in an indian raid", "we built another fort", etc.

I didn't like the ending either, I think the whole story basically got pretty depressing towards the end with all the group dying or leaving to go off and do other things. All the next generation were grown up and strong but we don't have the emotional connection with them that we did with the first group.

5 out of 5 stars Great read!.......1999-10-10

I read this book a long long time back, but I still remember it very well.great characters and an entertaining story.A worthy sire to a wothy series.

4 out of 5 stars A terrific sequel, just as good as the first one.......1999-09-22

L'Amour is oustanding, no other writer has his attention to detail and imagery in their writings. Barnabas, Jeremy Ring, and others are once again beautifully presented and brought to life. definately a must read.

Customer Reviews:

2 out of 5 stars I must be missing something.......2006-08-18

I spent a lot of time pondering Sackett's Land, the first in L'amour's famous series about the winning of America. Sackett's Land is the story of Barnabas Sackett, a plucky fen-man (a man from the fascinating culture of the British swamps, long since drained) who journeys to America in the 1590s and explores the Chesapeake Bay. This book has one of the most exciting and well-written opening scenes that I've ever read in my life. I was immediately drawn in to the story of Barnabas and couldn't wait to see what happened to him.

Unfortunately, the book really lost focus after the opening. Written much in the style of a summer movie like Pirates of the Caribbean, it's one action sequence after another, with very little character development and almost no real plot. Even though the book was only 178 pages, I had to flog myself to get through it.

The best parts of Sackett's Land are when L'amour lets his own philosophy and knowledge of history shine through in brilliant little asides. I was amazed to learn about the different ethnic groups that existed in England back then. There's a great scene in which Barnabas and his friends loot an old Roman settlement, which L'amour slyly uses to comment on the ethics of digging up archeological treasures.

At heart the book is all about self-reliance, and I wish L'amour had given himself a driving plot to bring home this point that Barnabas makes so well:

I would not sit waiting for some vague tomorrow, nor for something to happen. One could wait a lifetime, and find nothing at the end of the waiting. I would begin here, I would make something happen.

4 out of 5 stars A fitting beginning to the Sackett saga.......2006-06-25

No matter where you started with the Sackett books, go ahead and read this one now. For fans of L'Amour's work, especially The Walking Drum, you will be pleased.

Sackett's Land is a good and appropriate beginning for the entire saga. It may well stimulate you to read the whole history in order.

The book is important for yet another reason. It's style and depth are a window to what The Walking Drum has in store for you. Sackett's Land hints at what L'Amour was capable of beyond the pulp western market.

When we pick up a Louis L'Amour book of the standard pulp market size, we have a set of expectations. Good and evil will be clearly recognizable. Good will prevail. The story will be enjoyable and just instructive enough to make us feel that we grew from reading the book. Sackett's Land fulfills all these expectations.

Sackett's Land also holds an interesting place in popular literature. It is representation of a specific family (along with fellow travelers through life) and that family's initial transcontinental encounters. As one reads it, one is reminded of Edgar Rice Burroughs's stories of Lord Greystoke. In fact, as I was mentally remarking that Sackett's Land reminded me of Tarzan (books 1 and 2), I turned the page to find our protagonist marooned on the new continent. In this case, the new continent was the North America, not Africa, but the similarity was fun to notice.

Louis L'Amour was a man of his time, and while he could tap into Burrough's storytelling rhythms at times, L'Amour was ever more interested in depicting people as people, and a great respecter of human diversity. I believe descendants today of American Indians and Europeans can read Sackett's Land and enjoy thinking about their own American families.

5 out of 5 stars THE ORIGINAL.......2006-05-26

This is one of his original works and a great story written well before he began recycling his "white hat - black hat, final shootout and gunfight plots." The movie follows the original closely as well.

5 out of 5 stars A slightly different take, the first of the sackett books, set much earlier.......2005-12-30

The nice sense of humour which I enjoyed in L'amour's books - or at least some of them, is apparent in this book. Set in 17th century when Barnabas Sackett was first driven out of England and makes a home in the new land. This is the first of the Sackett's who arrived in America.

America of this early date was not the America of the push to the west, but it is nevertheless a good read, and the standard plot devices are there, the fights and so on. More than anything it is the humour and the great characters which really make this a great read.

My favourite of the L'amour's I have read so far have been the Sackett books, but I also really like Fallon for the same reason. The easy humour which runs through some of them. The least favourite of the reads have been the ones where they are really just western without the wry good humour of the main character. Mojave crossing, a later Sackett book was another excellent good fun read - a bit confusing but funny too - so if you are looking for more good reading to follow this I hope that will give you some idea!

5 out of 5 stars The story of the founder of the Sackett clan.......2004-07-17

Louis L'Amour wrote over a hundred westerns. His best-known series are a set of stories about the Sacketts, a family of tough men and women. Many of the books are about the men coming out west and their adventures. They have integrity and stand up for truth and justice. They don't go looking for trouble, but when it comes to them, they don't back down.

"Sackett's Land" sets the stage for the rest of the stories. It doesn't take place in the west in the late 1800s, but starts in England as Barnabas Sackett has some troubles and heads for the New World in the 1600s. He has great adventures and does great things. There is lots of fighting, but instead of with guns it is more often with swords.

The story starts off quickly with Barnabas finding some old coins and trying to sell them. He encounters the nephew of an earl. The nephew ends up looking foolish; the nephew doesn't like being made a fool of so he decides to kill Barnabas. Barnabas runs, and along the way we are introduced to old England, England in the early 1600s. We meet people of all walks of life. Then the story moves to America and back to England.

This is a fun book. It is easy to read and entertaining. If you haven't read it, it is worth reading. If you have read it, do yourself a favor and read it again.

4 out of 5 stars Storytelling masterfully done.......2006-03-26

No one matches Louis L'Amour for writing westerns. He is unquestionably the daddy of Western literature.

In Mustang Man, Nolan Sackett, a man on the run, helps out a group stranded in the middle of no where, only to be had by them later in the hunt for gold. Although the plot is straight-forward and a little predictable, the the first-person narrative is always engaging and Nolan Sackett becomes a well-defined and likeable protagonist.

Highly recommended.

5 out of 5 stars Another good one in the Sackett series.......2006-02-22

L'Amour never really missed with any of his books. If you would like to read about the American West, a family that I wish mine was like, please read the Sackett series of books.

5 out of 5 stars Almost too much for even a Sackett to handle.......2004-11-03

Louis L'Amour really was a master at his craft. "Mustang Man" is a fairly short book, but it is packed with action and intrigue. There are several groups in the book looking for 300 pounds of gold. The hero, Nolan Sackett, gets caught up in the race when he tries to help a stranded group.

The book starts off with Nolan on the run, he beat a man to the draw, and the man's friends come after Nolan intending to kill him. Nolan has a run in with another man when Nolan needs a fresh horse. A few pages later Nolan comes to help a group, and the group tries to kill him. And the story never slows down.

This is a fairly typical Louis L'Amour, a very well written story. It is a page turner, and is hard to put down. If you enjoy a good western, pick this book up; it is worth reading.

5 out of 5 stars Why I Read L'Amour.......2004-02-17

I had read a couple other Louis L'Amour books before I found this one. It was seventh grade and it so affecimpressed me that I knew then that I would name my first son Nolan, after the main character. It was many years before I had a son, but his name is Nolan.

This book does not cover new ground (literarily speaking) from other L'Amour novels, but in this one he is at the top of his craft. An abrupt beginning and a ride that keeps you clinging to the saddle for the whole story are just a part of it. The characters are real, the locations are so cunningly described you think you're there, and the ending will blow you off the desert.

If you like LL, you'd probably also like my work (which is available at Amazon under the title "First Time: The Legend of Garison Fitch")

5 out of 5 stars For all who are fans of classic Louis L'Amour westerns.......2003-11-17

Mustang Man is the unabridged audiobook presentation of a novel of Old West in the era of gold rush fever, written by the popularly cherished, award-winning author Louis L'Amour. A part of The Sacketts series, this is the story of a man who lives by his own moral code, and finds himself caught in a crossfire between a rightful heiress, her jealous relations, and a remorseless killer. An exciting and dramatic tale of the lengths to which greed can drive human beings, Mustang Man is vividly narrated by Terrence Mann and a "must" for all who are fans of classic Louis L'Amour westerns. (5 hours, 3 cassettes).

Classic story by L'amour where the hero manages to struggle through extremely difficult circumstances to win in the end because of toughness, ingenuity and skill.

5 out of 5 stars Sackett gets himself in a heap of trouble helping a girl.......2003-11-09

"Mojave Crossing" by Louis L'Amour is part of the "Sacketts" series. It is told in the first person narrative and contains almost non-stop action. The reader is brought into the "Old West" in this historic fiction novel.

Tell Sacket was heading toward Los Angeles when he meets a black-eyed woman that seemed to be pursued by a gang of men. She is an excellent characterization of a woman that uses her looks to manipulate men in the business of temptation. Hesitantly, he agrees to take her with him, which gets him tangled in a heap of trouble.

The vivid description of what the West was like includes the way they talked, dressed, and the landscape itself. The reader also learns about deserts and practical tips on how to survive in them. You can read this in order as part of the Sackett series, or only this single volume. Either way, it is sure to be an enjoyable and entertaining reading adventure.

5 out of 5 stars The Sacketts(Mojave Crossing).......2003-03-18

I think The Sackett books are good to read because its on the western 1800s time.
At first I was like why read this book but its actuly based on true places but fictional characters.
Tell Sackett saves some kids so he can get his newphew back from the indians.

"Mojave Crossing" by Louis L'Amour is about a man Tell Sackett who crosses the Mojave desert which really got me interested in the book. This western novel from beginning of the book to the end had nonstop action. I have read many Louis L'Amour novels and this along with "Flint" are my favorite. L'Amour is a a very consistant writer and I am sure that once you read one you can't stop.

4 out of 5 stars Sacketts, The Next Generation.......2007-05-08

"The Warrior's Path" was a bit of a let-down after the first two Sackett novels ("Sackett's Land" and "To The Far Blue Mountains"). Also, the Warrior's Path had very little to do with the story. Nevertheless, I enjoyed the book immensely and highly recommend it to anyone who enjoys an adventure yarn.

1 out of 5 stars Questionable History.......2006-01-23

The book is an interesting story, but I would have expected the history to be more accurate. Hopefully no one is learing their American History from Louis L'Amour. He refers to the Plymouth Colony as the Massachusetts Bay Colony, and they were two separate groups. They eventually merged, but not in 1630. The main group of the Massachusetts Bay Colony didn't even arrive until 1630 when this story supposedly takes place. The logistics are also bad. I find it unbelievable that two men from the Blue Ridge in Carolina (can't find any history of white men on the Blue Ridge in 1630) could have been found and have made their way to Massachusetts overland to help rescue kidnap victims. Historical fiction can help us learn our history, but not this fiction.

5 out of 5 stars Review of a book on cassette tape.......2005-09-12

We have listened to three Sackett books . This one is excellent--as were the other two. The narrator is so believable as the characters in the story. We recommend it highly.

5 out of 5 stars Another Great Sackett Adventure!.......2005-03-25

First of all..if you have kids, encourge them to read the Sackett novels. They are full of history, mystery, and adventure. Along the way they just might pick up some long forgoten values missing in today's youth. This is the 3rd book in the Sackett Series, Kin Ring, Son of Barnabas Sackett, sets out on a journey to put a cramp in the slave trade. A young white girl is kidnapped, and Kin Ring gets her back, only to find her kidnapped again by slave traders while he searches for another who has been long missing. On land or on the sea, Louis L'Amour knows how to tell a story. If you have never read LL, you are in for a surprise! I was! Lay aside all your misconceptions and dive into a LL novel. You won't be sorry!

5 out of 5 stars Another great Sackett novel........2000-12-16

As a child of the true American West, I grew up with Louis L'Amour. I have always loved his westerns and especially the Sackett books. All of them are great. Although I grew up a cowboy in the original sense of the word, my favorite Sackett novels are the first four. Maybe because it is a part of the world I never knew, who knows. No one who has any kind of adventurous spirit could dislike this book. It has everything, the wild Appalachian Mountains to the open seas and tropical ports full of pirates and swordsmen. Barnabas may be my favorite Sackett and Kin Ring is definitely a fitting son. This book is a must read even if you could never get into Louis' western novels. There is something for everyone here.
