4 out of 5 stars Good Starter Book For Learning About Columbus........2002-08-03

Hi!:) This book is nice and informative without being too long and boring. It will most likely appeal to children around 5 or 6 through about 9 or 10. After that, they may want to read another, more in depth biography about this remarkable and fearless sailor and explorer.
The illustrations are realistic and well done.
I, as a parent, felt that the ending was a bit weak, but children will certainly gain a better understanding and clearer picture of the explorer, and his sacrifices, upon reading this book. Wording is simple and uncomplicated. A step 2 book.
Good information, good book!~

5 out of 5 stars Safety with a touch of humor.......2002-11-11

This "safety guide" is a perfect all around book for parents to read and review with children. The text is simple and covers 1-2 page reviews of common places and events that require safe practice. Topics include home, yard, meals, fire, animals, on wheels, playground, camping, car, beach, trips, first aid, cold weather and night safe practices. The illustrations are humorous and make some of the potentially scary ideas not so scary, yet the book still has a serious tone. The pictures clearly illustrate (and parents can certainly discuss them) what the text is saying for both younger nonreaders and the older elementary age readers. And the dinosaur topic is sure to appeal to a broad range of ages. I have purchased or checked out from the library several specific topic safety books (strangers, fire) but this one is a great addition because it includes many subjects not necessarily worthy of an individual book.

5 out of 5 stars Amazingly Awesome Book.......2000-06-01

This is a awesome book for kids.First of all it has great safety tips for your children. Also it has cute, funny pictures of dinosaurs. Most important it will educate your kids on what to do in case of a fire or if something happens on a camping trip. This book gives you safety rules for water emergencies to car safety.Plus this book is great for the whole family. So if you are looking for a great book on safety for your kids this book is definitely for you.

Schoolkids are naturally fascinated by their teachers. They stand in front of the room all day long, demanding attention and holding forth on one new topic after another. What type of lives do these odd characters have? In this funny story, one precocious lad thinks he knows how teachers live: after school they play in the gym, hear stories in the library, eat leftovers in the cafeteria, and sleep in their classrooms. But then when young Sherlock sees Mrs. Quirk at the supermarket, the mall, and in the park he makes an incredible discovery. His teacher has a secret life! What if the other teachers find out? A charming, bright, and engaging tale about school roles, personal identity, and partial knowledge that will enlighten and entertain young children. (Ages 4 to 7)

Book Description

Everyone knows that teachers belong in school. But one day, Mrs. Quirk is spotted in the supermarket. And, as if that isn't bad enough, she is later seen trying on skates at the mall. Does she have a secret life? And just who is that girl that looks just like her -- only smaller?

In this delightfully zany picture book, every child's curiosity is made wonderfully plain as Mrs. Quirk and her cohorts are found out at last!

5 out of 5 stars My thoughts on My Teacher's Secret Life.......2001-10-11

I think this book is very funny. In this story the little boy thinks the teachers stays at school all the time. The little boy thinks that the librarian reads to the teachers before they go to bed at night. He thinks the cafeteria ladies cook dinner for the teachers. He thinks the gym teacher makes them do exercises. He thinks the music teacher makes the teachers dance. He also thinks the art teacher makes them draw pictures. On one weekend he sees the teacher roller blading with a strange man and a little girl that looks just like his teacher. So he realizes that his teacher goes home at night. But what about the others!!

    5 out of 5 stars The Printer's Apprentice.......2002-11-08

I read a marvelous book titled The Printer's Apprentice, written by Stephen Krensky. This story takes place in 1734 in New York. The four main characters are Gus Croft,William Bradstar,Peter Zenger, and the governer of New York.Gus is a young bright child who is an apprentice of William and writes for the Gazzete.William owns the Gazette and teaches Gus a whole lot about writting.Zenger is a bright young man who is the writer for the Neww York Weekly Journal. The governer fo New York is an old man that runs the city. The main problem is that the poor man Zenger is being put on trial because he wrote bad(but true)things about the governer.
In the begining, the governer of New York wanted the Gazette that William owned to be cancled unless better things were written. So William told Gus to go to visit his cousin in Philadelphia to do this.At the same time,Zenger is being placed on trial because he wrote bad but true things about the governer in the New York Weekly trial. It was a great timing because Gus finds this trial with Zenger when he's in Philladelphia. He watches the trial and hears the defendent of Zenger explaining what is libel and what is the truth to the judge and jurores. He tells that what Zenger wrote was true, but if it wasn't true he should be guilty.Eleven years later Zenger dies.
This book tells what happened durring the colonial days.Writers would write things about a person in a high oosision and the person doesn't like it.You may not know that people were put on trial because of this. The high leveled person would say that the writer was writing libel things about him.If the judge lets the writer have the freedom of speech then the writer is innocent and should not be guilty and sent to prison.

This is a SUPER book! It was a very basic reading level and I'm kinda a big, advanced reader, so that's why I rated it so low, but it really was good. The characters were believable and it encouraged me to think- as my english teacher says, "to be a good reader" I recommend it to everyone, except people who think they're above good books that just happen to be at a low reading level. To them, I recommed a sour lemon to match their sour attitude!

    5 out of 5 stars Great book.......2000-12-06

This book was great. Everyone should read it.
