Customer Reviews:
Disappointing.......2007-06-17
The Space Wolf Omnibus is just short of 800 pages of poorly executed sci-fi action set in the Warhammer 40,000 universe. The author's style (or lack thereof) is rudimentary, particularly evident and offsetting in the first novel, which at times is so clumsily and laughably written that reading it becomes an unpleasant effort. Every action of the main characters is preceded by arrays of superlatives, as King struggles to competently convey the sense of scale and "authentically" depict Space Marines. There is very little character development, aside from the predictable pattern of the protagonist progressing from a naive youngling to a weathered veteran of a thousand battles.
It's not all bad, though. King somehow manages to create likable characters the reader may eventually grow to care about. The dialog is often amusing, and the omnibus does get progressively better toward the end. Two and a half stars for this mess - one for the setting and one and a half for the effort. I did try to like it. Recommended to w40k geeks like myself and no one else.
A must have for fans of WH40K. An excellent Sci-Fi adventure series........2007-06-13
William King's Space Wolf novels have helped shape the world of WH40K. This omnibus collection contains the first three (of five) and would serve as an excellent place for WH40K first-timers to get an introduction to the world and setting. Through reading of the ascension of Ragnar Blackmane and by witnessing his trials and battles throughout the Imperium, much can be learned about space marines and the WH40K universe.
The first book of this omnibus edition, Space Wolf (Warhammer 40,000: Space Wolf), chronicles the rise of Ragnar. From a young member of a small islander tribe of Fenris to the glory of an ultimate warrior of the Imperium, this is a tale of growing and learning. Because Ragnar is devoid of any knowledge about the universe and proceeds to learn and observe, this book serves as an excellent introductory book to the WH40K world. Principally, this first book serves as an introduction to Ragnar and the Space Wolves, and nothing much more. Almost like a primer for the next books in the series.
The second book, Ragnar's Claw (Space Wolves), tells of Ragnar's first adventure off-world of Fenris. He and his claw are sent to assist an inquisitor on a mission to collect an ancient artifact and save a hive city from a deadly plague. Their mission takes them through vast distances to fight orks, genestealers, and daemons in a multitude of different environments. The character of Ragnar is further developed, with him being critically wounded only to be revived with a new fear of mortality. There is an undercurrent of uneasiness throughout the book that is only explained in the last couple of chapters as the heroes discover the true puppeteer of their mission.
The third book of the trilogy, Grey Hunter (Space Wolves), is my personal favorite. It has a much more epic feel with a heavy involvement by many Imperial forces, including a battalion of Titans. The planet of Garm, an industrial world that has special ties to the Space Wolves and houses a Shrine to Russ, has entered a civil war in which the forces of Chaos seem on the verge or bringing about the resurrection of the Thousand Sons Chaos Marines. Nearly the whole Space Wolf chapter is mobilized for an immense invasion of the shrine world -where they find great adversity. The action and suspense of this final novel is the most intense of the three and caps off this omnibus edition in grand fashion.
The fighting scenes and descriptions of the Space Wolf Space Marines are excellent, and as Ragnar discovers the vastness of the Imperium the reader develops a better understanding too. Perhaps the best aspect of this book is the sheer epic feel. The multitude of enemies Ragnar encounters and the vast spaces he travels make this stand out as an excellent resource for those wishing to learn more about the WH40K world. The only complaints I have with these stories arise from the writing of King. He tends to over-use descriptive words and phrases, creating a very repetitive feel to some of the scenes. Overall, a must have for any WH40K fan and highly recommended for any fan of Sci-Fi.
Damn Good Book.......2007-06-06
This is the best book I have ever read if you like Warhammer 40K than this is a must have. But even if you have never played or read a Warhammer book before this is probably the best one to start out with. It tells you how space marines become space marines and how the universe is viewed through the eyes of humans in the 41st millennium. Also you do not need to know alot about the Warhammer history to understand this book. This book is a great read and I recommend it to everyone.
Space Wolves Rule:).......2007-04-18
All i can say is read the omni-bus,the books are very good,i like the authors way of still keeping the space marines human, and not just some godlike human tanks,im looking forward to more books.
Best of the Best of the Black Library.......2007-03-13
To sum up the Space Wolf Omnibus - mind-blowing. To give some perspective, I am an avid Warhammer 40k reader and thus far have purchased and read every Gaunt's Ghost novel, the Eisenhorn and Ravenor trilogies (minus the as-yet-unreleased third Ravenor novel). I have also read the Soul Drinkers Trilogy and numerous other books from the 40k Universe.
With all that said, I initially bought the Space Wolf Omni just to add to my collection. I WAS BLOWN AWAY at the fantastic depth of story that William King has crafted surrounding the history of Ragnar Blackmane. As a lifelong Fantasy/Sci-Fi reader and RPG veteran, this book was 'crack' to my addiction!! Page-turning through all three novels, Bill King delivers a compelling story with an easy sense of humor.
Dan Abnett shows us one aspect of life in the 40K Universe in the two Inquisitor trilogies. Abnett shows us another aspect in the Gaunt's Ghost series. Bill King adds to these works as only a Master can. As an American reader I often have to filter out the inherently British euphemisms, cultural flavors, etc. that Dan Abnett delivers in every novel. William King, despite being a Scot, delivers (IMHO) a nearly ethnically neutral series of books and that (to me) allows me to suspend disbelief just that little bit more.
Fans of 40K should consider the Space Wolf Omnibus as a MUST HAVE. I would actually recommend to ANY new 40K reader that they start with the Space Wolf series as Bill King delivers a 'from the ground-up' experience that both educates new readers and provides compelling stroy for us 40K veterans!!

The scientific chapters are divided into sections by discipline i.e. biochemisty, physics, cell biology and molecular biology etc..
This book serves as a comprehensive background and update on virtually all clinical aspects of pigmentation. Extensive reviews of rare and unusual syndromes, thorough reviews of therapies available to alter skin colour and numerous photographs make this volume an essential resource for dermatologists at large. Stephen King's collection of five stories about '60s kids reads like a novel. The best is "Low Men in Yellow Coats," about Bobby Garfield of Harwich, Connecticut, who craves a Schwinn for his 11th birthday. But his widowed mom is impoverished, and so bitter that she barely loves him. King is as good as Spielberg or Steven Millhauser at depicting an enchanted kid's-eye view of the world, and his Harwich is realistically luminous to the tiniest detail: kids bashing caps with a smoke-blackened rock, a car grille "like the sneery mouth of a chrome catfish," a Wild Mouse carnival ride that makes kids "simultaneously sure they were going to live forever and die immediately."
Bobby's mom takes in a lodger, Ted Brautigan, who turns the boy on to great books like Lord of the Flies. Unfortunately, Ted is being hunted by yellow-jacketed men--monsters from King's Dark Tower novels who take over the shady part of town. They close in on Ted and Bobby, just as a gang of older kids menace Bobby and his girlfriend, Carol. This pointedly echoes the theme of Lord of the Flies (the one book King says he wishes he'd written): war is the human condition. Ted's mind-reading powers rub off a bit on Bobby, granting nightmare glimpses of his mom's assault by her rich, vile, jaunty boss. King packs plenty into 250 pages, using the same trick Bobby discerns in the film Village of the Damned: "The people seemed like real people, which made the make-believe parts scarier."
Vietnam is the otherworldly horror that haunts the remaining four stories. In the title tale, set in 1966, University of Maine college kids play the card game Hearts so obsessively they risk flunking out and getting drafted. The kids discover sex, rock, and politics, become war heroes and victims, and spend the '80s and '90s shell-shocked by change. The characters and stories are crisscrossed with connections that sometimes click and sometimes clunk. The most intense Hearts player, Ronnie Malenfant ("evil infant"), perpetrates a My Lai-like atrocity; a nice Harwich girl becomes a radical bomber. King's metaphor for lost '60s innocence is inspired by Donovan's "sweet and stupid" song about the sunken continent, and his stories hail the vanished Atlantis of his youth with deep sweetness and melancholy intelligence. --Tim Appelo
Amazon.com Audiobook Review
With his idiosyncratic blend of patrician airs and boyish charm, narrator William Hurt provides a wonderful complement to this wildly imaginative collection of short stories by author Stephen King. Hurt carefully weaves the disparate elements into a cohesive whole, embracing the subtle complexities of each character; one moment a wizened sadness leaks into his voice as a haunted old man, pursued by demons, asks his 11-year-old lookout, "You know everyone on this street, on this block of this street anyway? And you'd know strangers? Sojourners? Faces of those unknown?" Then, in a profound yet almost imperceptible switch, he exposes the boy's naive enthusiasm, "I think so." Right about here your neck hairs will stand at attention. Hurt's peculiar vocal style is in perfect pitch to King's dark, surreal vision of growing up amid the monsters of post-Vietnam America. (Running time: 21 hours, 16 cassettes) --George Laney
Book Description
Stephen King, whose first novel, Carrie, was published in 1974, the year before the last U.S. troops withdrew from Vietnam, is the first hugely popular writer of the TV generation. Images from that war -- and the protests against it -- had flooded America's living rooms for a decade. Hearts in Atlantis, King's newest fiction, is composed of five interconnected, sequential narratives, set in the years from 1960 to 1999. Each story is deeply rooted in the sixties, and each is haunted by the Vietnam War.
In Part One, "Low Men in Yellow Coats," eleven-year-old Bobby Garfield discovers a world of predatory malice in his own neighborhood. He also discovers that adults are sometimes not rescuers but at the heart of the terror.
In the title story, a bunch of college kids get hooked on a card game, discover the possibility of protest...and confront thier own collective heart of darkness, where laughter may be no more than the thinly disguised cry of the beast.
In "Blind Willie" and "Why We're in Vietnam," two men who grew up with Bobby in suburban Connecticut try to fill the emptiness of the post-Vietnam era in an America which sometimes seems as hollow -- and haunted -- as their own lives.
And in "Heavenly Shades of Night Are Falling," this remarkable audiobook's denouement. Booby returns to his hometown where one final secret, the hope of redemption, and his heart's desire may await him.
Full of danger, full of suspense, most of all full of heart, Stephen King's new audiobook will take some listeners to a place they have never been...and others to a place they have never been able to completely leave.
Download Description
By "Atlantis", King means the 1960s, that otherworldly decade which, like the fabled continent, has sunk into myth. Here, in five interconnected narratives that span from 1960 to 1999, King draws a stunning portrait of American life after the Vietnam War.
Customer Reviews:
As Good as it gets.......2007-06-14
It really is a novel, not a collection. It is the best book King has ever written. Books rarely make me cry, but this one did. My all time favorite King book and my all time favorite work of fiction.
A story with heart.......2007-05-16
William Hurt does a phenomenal job with his sections of the story. He can capture the soul, joy and pain of all of his characters. He reads 3 of the 5 stories on the CD.
Stephen Kin reads the other 2 stories. I am not as interigued by the stories or the characters they focus on. Couple that with his flat, New England voice, and the middle section is not as enjoyable.
This is NOT a typical King story. There is a small amount of monster/supernatural element to it, but this is more about the human heart.
I really like this and actually bought the CD to replace my worn out cassette version. You may want to read excerpts from the story to decide if it is to your liking.
Read This Book.......2007-05-03
This book was great. Read it...that's all there is to say. It was great. It was the best...just read this and you wont regret it...if you do, however, then you're wrong and dumb. Ok I'm kidding, but read it. If you don't like it, let me know and I'll apologize.
Dark Tower reference.......2007-04-10
I read this book straight after finishing the Dark Tower series, and fortunately for me, it did quell the withdrawal symptoms I found myself with after finally emerging from King's amazing adventure.
In short - I thoroughly enjoyed it.
It took me once again out of the square and allowed my mind to journey on a similar kind of path as did the Dark Tower books.
In all honesty - Can anyone go wrong with ANY King title.
Read it - you'll love it.
A Wonderful Read!.......2007-04-09
I finished this book today, it rocked hard. What a great book! Stephen King is still agreat author. The way he did five stories that are all tied together is simply woderful. I recomend this book to all Stephen King fans.

Not best space wolf novel.......2007-06-20
This is a book I found easy to put down, though at times the action is riveting. If u never read another space wolf book, you will find this book shortcoming in many aspects. The plot is limited in both temporal and spatial scales. Characters are extremely shallow and undeveloped, with suspension of belief in the storyline as a result. Environments also suffer, though the limited scope of the storyline would encourage painting of detailed pictures...
Positive signs? a glimpse on how earth-like planets could end up if building pressure is carried on to extremes. But even this very good opportunity is really wasted by totally unrealistic concepts, as buildings still standing after what is hinted like hundreds of meters of other buildings placed on top of them! lol...
Positive points are glimpses of an imperial assasin, navigator life, including a secret that is hinted at 200 pages before it is revealed, some battle scenes...
Only recommended if u must read all 40k novels! Pulp scifi at its most hastily thrown together type...
Ragnar continues to impress.......2007-05-29
William King has done a superb job with the Ragnar series. The characters in the books are well thought out and each show their own personality. King really works hard to bring sense to the Space Wolves and the Adeptus Astartes. Other authors would just show space marines as mindless killing machines, but some authors like King really show the inner working of the Marines and that like all of us even though they have been indoctrinated into the life of a warrior they each have a complex inner dialogue and feeling.
This book branches out from those in the omnibus as it leads Ragnar away from his bretheren in the first 3 books, and picks up his life after losing the Spear of Russ. The book takes place on Terra and the treacherous things that take place in the center of the Imperium. It is filled with new Space Wolf characters who have a decidedly different attitude than those populating the first set, but the reader will not be dissapointed.
Couldn't stop myself, read it in one sitting.......2007-04-24
If you're familiar with William King and his other Space Wolf novels, then you should be reading this one. King at his best-setting, plot, action, humor-great storytelling!
If you're not familiar with William King or the Space Wolf novels, you will probably not be disappointed by checking out the Space Wolf Omnibus which has all the 3 novels before this one.
And if you like Fantasy, you cannot miss King's Gotrek and Felix novels.
William King, Continues his greatness!.......2007-04-04
This book is fantastic. I've read all the William King - Space Wolf books and this one continues the same feel, touch, smell and sight of the 40k Universe & Space Wolf Series. Ragnar's Introduction into the Wolf Blade allows for the introduction of some great colourful characters and a change of 'setting' from the previous Space Wolf Universe but still does a convincing job of throwing our hero (Ragnar) into an unfamiliar and dangerous world.
I enjoyed how William King took Creative license and referred to things in some fairly obscure '40k fluff' and interposed it into this booking making it convincing and full of 40k sci-fi life!
Like all William King books, some knowledge of the 40k world is useful, but not mandatory and the book is written in a way you don't need to know too much of what happened in the previous books.
Best of the Space Wolf Series.......2007-03-21
This is probably my favorite book of the series. I was able to read the entire book in one day.

Customer Reviews:
A Whirlwind Fantasy Adventure at a Bargin Price.......2006-11-25
This collection of the first three books in the series of Gotrek and Felix covers Trollslayer, Skavenslayer and Daemonslayer. From the very first short-story this book had me hooked and didn't let me go until the very end of the book. I devoured the 763 pages in record time (for me at least, which was under one week). If you love fantasy adventures with great characters that you can identify with, I heartily recomment this book. I found it to be a great value over purchasing the books separately (though this does make it less portable if you enjoy reading while on-the-go).
I am not a player of the Warhammer games, so I did not quite know what to expect going into this book. I had originally picked it up to gain some background on the Warhammer universe for a job interview with the Warhammer Online development team. And even though I didn't get the game programming job, I was happy to have found this treasure.
The first two books are in a short story format which made me eager to read several in a single sitting. Looking at the table of contents I was leery that the final book, Daemonslayer, was not in the short story format as I had come to enjoy it so much. But the chapters flow so well in Daemonslayer that I didn't want the excitement to end. I'm eagerly looking forward to the second and third omnibi (omnibuses?) of Gotrek and Felix.
A fast-paced, war-torn world which has since spawned a host of popular adventures........2006-10-15
Pair a bargain price tag with a Warhammer omnibus of fantasy action gathering the flagship series under one cover and you have a fine pick for any serious fantasy collection. All three of the classics - TROLLSLAYER, SKAVENSLAYER and DAEMONSLAYER are included to provide a smooth, seamless introduction to a fast-paced, war-torn world which has since spawned a host of popular adventures.

An unlikely alliance.......2007-02-03
William King's GOTREK & FELIC: THE SECOND OMNIBUS bundles DRAGONSLAYER, BEASTSLAYER and VAMPIRESLAYER under one cover, telling of a poet Felix Jaeger who finds himself in an unlikely alliance with a dwarf Gotrek to witness his death and compose an epic poem about it. His position as a fugitive and his new alliance will bring him further into contact with new dangers.
Great Book.......2007-02-01

I have all the books awhile ago and lost them . SO i got the first and

The only trouble with the hole story was the ending of the last book.
I think it was ended badly there was no ending the book looked like it could be opening for a another book but i have looked around and no word on that. I would tell you o buy them .

For the true O'Brien aficionado's out there . . .......2006-06-30
A wonderfully illustrated geographical guide to the complete series. Great for both historians and the geographically-challenged, this book enhances the enjoyment of each novel. While King tries hard to avoid any 'spoilers' one has to be careful in looking at the route plots too early in each novel lest you see unexpected developments revealed - or, as Jack Aubrey would say, you'll be brought by the lee like a true lubber! Enjoy.
a rather weak effort.......2005-12-21
I dislike rambling Amazon user reviews, and so I'll keep this short; Mr. King's book is reasonably good in terms of maps, though one might wish that a few more were added. The introductory material is somewhat interesting, if a bit simplistic. The prose leaves something to be desired; I found myself constantly irritated by particularly inept turns of phrase.
All of this could be forgiven, though, if it were not for the most disappointing aspect --- which is the reason I'm writing this review --- namely, King's summaries of the novels. These summaries were one of the main reasons I decided to buy the book. I had read the first 14 O'Brian novels over the course of three months, earlier this year, but a fall semester of full-time graduate studies understandably pulled me away from the adventures; I found that the passage of time had left the exact order of events a bit hazy, and so I was looking forward to reading summaries of the first 14 installments. King's summaries are truly terrible; he usually recounts only the battles in any given book, if that much, and rarely mentions anything else of note (Diana Villiers and Sophie Aubrey are mentioned only twice each, in passing; Wray is mentioned once). Also, in order to 'avoid spoiling the endings,' he has left out the most important plot points of each novel; in certain cases he will leave out the entire final third of a plot, because to summarize that aspect of the novel would be to 'give away the ending,' which seems to me extremely idiotic if one's stated goal is to provide summaries of the novels (and not, say, a book review, in which one wouldn't want to give away the ending).
Excellent companion.......2005-10-26
Synopsi of each book; info on all the islands, cities and other places visited, excellent maps. I did want a little more though... more of each type of thing. It's one of those that you would want on your shelf along with other companion books. No 1 book is perfect.
Jack Aubrey would use this!.......2005-10-04
There are two things wrong with O'Brien's Aubrey-Maturin books: I often can't figure out who is talking, that's one, and I cant keep track of where they are, that's two. King's book really solves the second problem and in doing so, extends the books in a way another novelist could not. King provides the missing knowledge of the seas, the world, the ports, and some history that O'Brien merely assumes. And in doing so makes it even more delicious and filling, extending the world according to O'Brien that we all love into not more novels, but more depth and relevance for the existing 20 and well worth accompanying them for that purpose.
As for problem one. Can anyone suggest a set of rules for interpreting who is doing the talking in the O'Brien books? Most of the time it is apparent, but sometimes its a struggle to reread and try to figure it out. Or is it just me ....
An Excellent Reference Book.......2005-09-30
I don't understand why anyone would be disappointed with this book. The first 17 books in the series all have their own chapter, complete with a summary, maps and interesting side notes about the places visited. Many thanks to the author for providing these summaries, because it is easy to get confused the story lines of each book after they have been read. There are plenty of maps to show the places and routes for the first 17 books in the series. I urge anyone wanting more information about Jack Aubrey to buy this book.

Seafood Lovers Rejoyce!.......2006-01-12
If you are a lover of seafood this is the book for you. Absolutely brimming over with detailed information about seafood, how to cook it, keep yourself safe eating it and just plain enjoying it. Chef King shares with the reader his recipes of seafood that are used in the famous "McCormick & Schmick's Seafood Restaurants," perhaps now you can enjoy these delicious meals at home.
We are given many recipes such as, Seafood Cocktails, Spenger's Fish Tacos, Apple Halibut and Grilled Rainbow Trout, to name only a few. This book is not stingy with its recipes and you will be amazed how many are shared with you and the concise and easy to following instructions for you to make these dishes.
You will also find a section on some mouth-watering deserts, such as, "Three Berry Cobbles," and "Deep-Dish Apple Pie." Hungry yet? The photos that I saw were bright and clear and certainly brought the food to light in a very visual way. All in all, for the seafood lover who would like to enjoy these wonderful meals at home, this cookbook is for you. Very well done.

Comments on earlier volumes: "William Cowper is one of the very greatest of letter-writers in English.... To read them is to be in touch with a mind of civilised humor and a style of healthy clarity.... The completed set will become an indispensable work of scholarship."--Critical Quarterly.
