didn't work at all.......2007-01-04
This has one of the worst installers I have ever seen. I'm a professional software developer with 30 years experience, and I could not get this to install on my daughters windows xp machine.
the epitome of mediocrity.......2000-03-12
This book is very poor. I give it a poor rating because the solution manuals that compliment this book are very mediocre. The solution manual that came with the book (It came bundled with the text at my college bookstore) seems as though it was hastily put together. Some answers are wrong, have typos, or even lacking altogether. The solution manual only covers chapters 1-12. The remaining chapters are covered in another manual...that's where the above problems are thrown into plain view. In the second solution manual, some answers don't match, are missing, or wrong. For example, chapter 13 has two sections that are flipped around, which shows the haste in bringing out this book. I have nothing good to say about these texts. When Calculus 3 is over this semester, I have 660+ pages worth of TP...that's the only way I feel the purchased can be justified.
Recommed This Book With Reservation.......1999-08-04
As all of you know already, all (except some exceptional textbooks by distinguished authors) Addison Weslely Mathematics books are well known for their terrible excercizes, explanations, lessons, and their contents. There are a few reasons why the above statement is true, but you can figure them out by yourself. Also, lack of information that hinders AP Calculus B C students further emphasize that this is a book made for the novice mathematicians of extremely low ability in problem solving and thinking. Overall, this book is not a book that can be used in an Advanced Placement Calculus BC class; and indeed, this book would a terrible choice for a short calcululus class at a university that offers a good quality mathematics education. This book definiately receives a "poor" recommendation; its contents must be enhanced for it to receive a better recommendation from the instructors and learners in the United States.
Professional Review.......1999-05-24
This calculus book is an excellent choice for college bound mathematics students in high schools. It covers every topics needed to succeed in later math courses and future; it has ample real-life problem situations that not only hone mathematics skills of the students, it also helps them to understand most of the abstract concepts of calculus. This book is suitable for use in any AP Calc courses (AB or BC). Despite many special features in this overall superior book, I do not strongly recommand this book. The reason is that this book uses very minimum colors and graphics that can help high school students to be interested in the materials in calculus; besides, graphics with colors CERTAINLY helps everyone to grasp the abstract "stuff". If you are a high school chairperson, and you are considering to purchase this book for your school to use as an AP Calc text book, I recommand you to look for a newer book.
Average book.......1999-01-07
In my opinion, I think this is a very average calculus textbook. It lacks proofs for many theorems and puts too much emphasis on the graphing calculator and other computer technologies in both chapters and problems (what do you expect from some egghead in MIT?) On the other hand, all the information is organized nicely and everything seems accurate for a first edition. But I have seen better. In my personal opinion, Salas & Hille's Calculus is a better book.

Fundamentally boring.......2005-09-26
The read of this book compares to reading an Encyclopedia, a very long, fact heavy, read. Having said that the books works as a reference guide. If you need to quickly refresh yourself on the various methods of welding this book is good. If you're sitting down by the pool to educate yourself on a pipeline, this book is not for you.

Book Description
Loved, hated, revered, scorned, real, imagined: this is Los Angeles. Looking at Los Angeles is a fascinating journey into the center of the city's heart and soul. Pictured within its pages is a Los Angeles of powerful dreams and startling realities. Editors Marla Hamburg Kennedy and Ben Stiller have gathered pictorial representations of Los Angeles from the last three-quarters of a century, resulting in this selection of more than 200 stunning, beautifully reproduced color and duotone depictions of the city from different eras and different points of view. Along with the carefully chosen images by approximately 100 photographers who have time again turned to Los Angeles for inspiration, a preface and foreword by the editors describe their great affection for the city, while David L. Ulin's essay offers a critical and loving look at Los Angeles. A portion of the proceeds from the sale of this book will be donated to the Los Angeles Conservancy, and the organization provides an essay about the importance of saving this city's rich architectural heritage. Looking at Los Angeles is at once a lesson in history, architecture, style, and culture, and a remarkable visual and written tribute to one of America's greatest cities. Includes photographs by: Robert Adams, John Baldessari, William Claxton, Will Connell, Joe Deal, John Divola, William Eggleston, Sam Fentress, Anthony Friedkin, John Humble, Dennis Keeley, Florian Maier-Aichen, Grant Mudford, Karin A. Mueller, Catherine Opie, Ed Ruscha, Stephen Shore, Julius Schulman, Joel Sternfeld, Timothy Street-Porter, John Swope, Andy Warhol, Julian Wasser, Robert Weingarten, Garry Winogrand, Max Yavno, and others.
Customer Reviews:
Stretch city.......2006-12-25
How do you photographically sum a city like Los Angeles? The editors of this sumptuous coffee-table book give it a go and I think succeed, just look at the names in the Book Description above. Eighty-eight photographers in all and some I've never heard of but their 225 images do give a feel of this extraordinary endless place. Look through the pages and the only conclusion is that this must be Los Angeles.
The book is loosely divided into themes: freeways and autos, shops, buildings, suburbs, signs, vegetation, swimming pools, beach and the last section LA at night. Julius Shulman with fourteen photos rightly has the most. No other photographer captured the range and style of LA contemporary architecture over the decades. His well-known night photo of Pierre Koenig's Case Study home is included. Another famous photo is Stephen Shore's stunning 'Beverley Blvd and La Brea Avenue'. Other photos just stop you like Michael Light's aerial freeway shot on page forty-three or John Divola's '5800 South block of Hoover Street' which opens up to an image just over twenty-seven inches wide on pages seventy-seven and eight. However, as far as I can see there is nothing to represent NWA-land: Compton or Watts.
The photos (in 175dpi) are impressively large and mostly one to a page and more or less split equally between color and black and white. There is though an annoying fault with the production - so four stars - the captions are all at the back making the reader to constantly keep turning the pages to find out about a photographer and their work. Most pages have plenty of space for a caption. There is an extra wrinkle unfortunately because many pages have no numbers either: 56 to 61, 156 to 161, 172 to 189 and in the night section nothing between 200 and 225. It must have been amateur night at the publishers and it really is inexcusable for an expensive book!

Customer Reviews:
Excellent Book.......2003-09-29
I had the privilage of using this book for my calculus course as a senior in high school. I am now in college and very often refer back to this text because it is so comprehensively written. The book is easy to understand, but still covers a great deal of the very broad subject of CALCULUS!
Not shaby.......2003-05-07
It's actually a rather good book. My high school class just covered this book from top to bottom this year and has prepared us for the AP test quite well. The lowest score on our practice tests is a 4. The rest of the class get's 4's or 5's. Our teacher is good, admittedly, but the book has also been detrimental to our success.
The topics are logical and concise, though the book does sometimes wander on certain topics to unrelated applications and whatnot. Though not the most comprehensive, it is a good book.
Calculus: Lacking in Content.......2002-11-23
After two full semesters with this book (and looking to start a third with it), I feel that the book is lacking in thoroughness and detail. This book is thinner than other calculus books I've seen, which may be appealing to calc I students but is detrimental for those going further. Some of the techniques shown in the book are very thorough and are described in a step-by-step manner. Other techniques are covered way too quickly in order for you to see exactly what is happening. The homework problems at the end of each section are too few to be of any real help. When you do a couple of problems and feel like you might know what is going on, they move on and give you problems that refer to another part of that section. I also bought the student solutions manual hoping that it would help unravel some of the mystery that is calculus. But again I was disappointed. The same lack of thoroughness pervades the manual; some answers are shown step-by-step while other answers skip steps, change forms, are worked and then changed back. Both the textbook and manual make assumptions about what the reader knows and/or how the reader might be trying to tackle the problem. If you have to use this book then I highly suggest getting REA'S Calculus Problem Solver. It was more helpful at times than the textbook!
Calculus: Lacking in Content.......2002-11-21
I have used this book for two semesters of calculus (and starting my third semester) and feel that it is sorely lacking in content! While the book is rather thin and therefore probably more appealling to the calculus I student, this will certainly lead to problems for those going further with this book. It is lacking in complete explanations of certain techniques. Although in all fairness it also does a good job of explaining other techniques. The homework problems at the end of each section are far too few to get a good feel for the technique being taught. After doing a couple of problems and getting a feel for what is happening, the book moves on to problems for another technique, leaving you wondering if you were doing it exactly right. The examples shown in the section to illustrate a technique can be confusing because they are not always shown in step-by-step form with the authors making assumptions about what the reader knows and/or how the reader would attack the problem. I used the student solutions manual to try to help unravel some of the mystery, but was also disappointed. It breaks down some of the answers completely so you can see what is happening and on other problems it again will skip steps and change the form of the answer making certain assumptions about how the reader is tackling the problem. If you have to use this book the I highly suggest getting the REA's Calculus Problem Solver to supplement the book. For some chapters it was more useful than the textbook!
A Well-written Textbook.......2002-10-25
Written in clear, concise language. Appendices are very useful.
But does anybody have the Student's Solutions Manual?

Book Description
Violence against women is a centuries-old problem, but scholarly discussion has centered on this topic only in recent decades. This explosion of information clearly demonstrates the need for a comprehensive analysis of the complex theoretical, methodological, and ethical issues surrounding this still-controversial area.

Editors Claire M. Renzetti, Jeffrey L. Edleson, and Raquel Kennedy Bergen fill this void with the
Sourcebook on Violence Against Women, original scholarly writings that extensively cover current research on violence against women. The four parts of this volume examine theoretical and methodological issues in research, types of violence, prevention and direct intervention, and continuing and emerging issues in domestic and international public policy.

As a comprehensive information source on violence against women, this book is an unsurpassed resource for students, practitioners, and academics.
