5 out of 5 stars Perfect for Caribbean bird lovers!.......2007-06-01

Much clearer and more up-to-date than The Birds of the West Indies (by James Bond) This book includes great full colour plates with lots of details.Descriptions are concise but very useful. I highly recommend this book to anyone birdwatching in the Caribbean.

5 out of 5 stars Ideal reference book.......2007-03-22

Birds of the West Indies is the ideal refernce publication for residents of and visiitors to the Caribbean whether they be avid bird watchers or amatuurs wishing to satisfy their curiosity in identifying the charming little creature that wished to share their breakfast on the terrace every morning.

The illustrations are beautifully and accurately produced and reference by species makes the identifying both quick and easy.

4 out of 5 stars missing the behavioral tips.......2007-02-15

I used this guide in Februrary 2007 on St. John, U.S. Virgin Islands. Color illustrations were very good. But I missed the short behavioral cues that you find in Peterson's guides, like "scratches in leaves near road edges," "bobs head and swims half submerged."

St. John's has a Park Ranger-led walk on Francis Bay trail that was very productive.

4 out of 5 stars Good bird guide.......2006-11-05

Used in Jamaica;I bought this guide for my husband,a keen bird watcher,he said it was a good field guide, easy to use with clear pictures.Handy to pop in the suitcase.

    4 out of 5 stars Mindless Entertainment.......2007-01-10

This is not particularly great space opera but it was an enjoyable way to waste a day sitting home sick.

The story is of a young officer who has been exiled to a distant post because of his brashness. He gets the job done in spite of incompetent leadership higher up. He is assigned to command two BOLOs which are well past their prime. He has trouble from day one because his new bosses do not appreciate his past talent for making them look bad and neither do they trust the sentient armored vehicles (BOLOs) assigned to them. He has to try and cope with laziness and a maintenance unit that sees no point in working hard when nothing much happens in that dist reach at the edge of the galaxy. Also troubling is the fact that the two BOLOs seem to be quite a bit more self-aware than should be expected for their model numbers.

Meanwhile, a new set of aliens has decided to invade. These are vaguely like carnivorous dinosaurs and have the same sort of table manners. Their biochemistry means that they cannot eat humans but that does not take the fun out of hunting them. Their civilization depends upon conquering others and looting refined metals. Their fleet is huge and they are without mercy.

It is all up to our young hero to stop them. He has two aging tanks at his disposal and will have to fight his own command authority as well as the aliens.

Other BOLO books have been better but this one did provide a few hours of enjoyment. It is worth reading and will even be remembered for a while.

4 out of 5 stars good book written in the tradition of the Bolos!.......2007-01-09

This book was a very enjoyable read. Bolo fans will notice that instead of being several short stories about different Bolo marks, this is actually a novel about two "obsolete" Mark XXIV Bolos who were thought to be past their prime. While I'm normally very fond of the short story approach, this novel was well written and held my attention through the entire story. A "must read" for any Bolo fan!

5 out of 5 stars One of the best Bolo books!.......2003-11-10

Bolo brigade is a well crafted, actioned packed story in the universe of Keith Laumer's Bolos, giant sentient tanks that are humanity's most stalwart defenders.

In Bolo Brigade, a bolo officer with a dead end career winds up posted to a backwater planet that is about to become a raging battleground. The Malach, a race of reptile-like aliens appears from the depths of space and invades the planet. The only force that can stop them are two old bolos and whatever forces the planetary government can muster.

Bolo Brigade thunders to a crescendo of action that is glittering in in its intensity and at one point seems to literally roar with the fury of battle. The bolos display courage and humanity that goes far beyond the call of duty, and the ending may even leave you with tears in your eyes.

Sometimes authors just nail it right on the head and William Keith excels with Bolo Brigade.

    5 out of 5 stars Pleasing!.......1999-04-20

This is one of those books you can read again and agian. Entertaining to the last. Believable characters and an extrodinary setting. I really wish (hint HINT) that a followup would come along one day.

5 out of 5 stars Fighting against the odds and political inertia.......1999-01-22

William H Keith, JR's book, "Bolo Brigade" (ISBN 0-671-87781-X), is his second contribution to Keith Laumer's Bolo story line. On the edge of the galactic arm and human occupied space, known as the Concordiat, lays the Strathan Cluster Confederation. The Confederation consists of thirty-six human inhabited worlds that gained their freedom from the direct control of the Concordiat, but still maintain an alliance with that larger human political body. Part of the alliance between the two governments is the deployment of sixteen very old, but still powerful ground based war machines, fourteen Mark XVIII and two Mark XXIV Bolos. The Mark XVIII Bolo , was almost the last design to be equipped with only the most advanced super computers of their day, while the two Mark XXIX Bolos, named Freddy and Ferdy, were fourth generation designs using a self-direct and self-aware computer. Lieutenant Donal Ragnor, a Bolo Tactical Officer of the Concordiat, has been transferred to the Confederation as liaison officer as punishment for bucking the Concordiat military chain of command. Soon after Donal's arrival on Muir, the capital world of the Confederation, he discovers the Mark XVIII Bolos have been deployed to fourteen different worlds and that he will be the commanding officer for both Mark XXIV Bolos stationed at the capital. Further, prior to Donal's arrival two member worlds have fallen silent and several starships have disappeared from the space lanes within the Cluster. The Cluster's central government assumes that the loss of communications is due to equipment malfunctions and that the some of the lost ships have been captured by pirates, while others are being reported means of committing insurance fraud. However, the government does not send out investigation teams to verify their theories. After Donal's arrival, Muir receives a garbled message from the world of Wide Sky, near to the edge of the cluster, about an invasion, before communications abruptly cease. Lieutenant Ragnor, Freddy, Ferdy, and Alexie Turner, Wide Sky's Deputy Director General, have to fight off the invasion of an unknown intelligent species on Muir. William H. Keith, JR brings the reader another well-balanced story in Keith Laumer's Bolo saga. This book is another gem for the reader who likes the writings of William H. Keith, JR and Keith Laumer.

TO THE VICTOR GO THE SPOILS....

And this Victor is fully capable of raking them in, a Bolo Mark XXXIII of the 4th Regiment, Second Brigade, First Confederation Mobile Army Corps, in the vanguard of an all-out Bolo strike against the planet Caern. The enemy is the Aetryx, shadowy, unknown beings who enslave other species with nothing less than the promise of immortality. As a savage, interstellar war begins, Colonel Jon Streicher prepares to lead Victor and the rest of his regiment in that most difficult of tactical evolutions -- a planetary invasion.

But D-Day turns into a disaster, and Caern is a deadly trap. Colonel Streicher and his command team find themselves stranded on the target planet, desperately attempting to survive the hellfire chaos of modern warfare, as Bolo faces Bolo-human hybrid in a cataclysmic showdown that will uncover unexpected truths, reveal hidden secrets, and even call into question the loyalty of the Dinochrome Brigade itself.

For just what will happen if the Aetryx aren't slavers after all, but literal gods who can make good on their promise of eternal life?

The Dinochromes are about to find out.

    2 out of 5 stars A great disapointment.......2003-01-02

Being as longtime fan of the Bolo books, I was disapointed. The central third of this book needed severe editing. While it could have stood as a novel on its own- the endless feminist angle did not fit, nor did the extensive sociology (and again overly pressing a feminist viewpoint) just does not belong in this book. Nor does some of the somewhat obscure human relations (like the whole brother in law thing was a waste of my time).

The Bolo books are getting slightly stuck in a rut, but good lord, can we be spared this please and at least have someone write that has some military sense? Or an editor that understands the series and has the guts to chop out the amazing-astoundo-female-hunters-that-are-the-savior-of-their-race-but only when allied with human females who are of course much smarter then men due to their sensitive nature? My, how original. I sense a Star Trek script here.

There were some interesting concepts here, that could have made a great addition to concordiat history, but it was blown in this context. And yes, I do feel gyped for my $... Did anyone actually read the final text before agreeing to run it as a Bolo book? or did an editor OK it on an outline?

I give it two stars only for the first story which is the typical stuff we can expect, and the one or two interesting ideas in the second. Sadly, they were not well explored in a military SF way.

Maybe nmext time I will wait til the books hit the used stores.

Keith, oh why have you forsaken us?

4 out of 5 stars Bolo versus Bolo!.......2002-12-31

The novel serves up great futuristic battle action with the immense, self aware, and incfedibly powerful Bolos. With Space engagements, ground engagements, and Bolos slugging it out against other run amok Bolo's - its a thrill. We even see a Bolo of the Line committ a mercy killing of another Human. It is a very engaged reading with constant action.

The ending? It fell apart at the very end. Otherwise it would have earned a 5 star.

5 out of 5 stars Caern was once a human planet,.......2002-12-16

colonized during the Concordiat age. Cut off during the Melcon Armageddon the planet was absorbed by the Aetryx, an alien race who believed they were a race of Gods. The humans of the Cofederation Mobile Army Corps decide to launch an invasion to free the enslaved populace. But there seems to be a few problems. One, many of the people of Caern seem to be loyal towards the Aetryx. Two, the Aetryx seem to have Bolos within their ranks who are just as loyal. Three, the Aetryx may really be GODS!

The book is packed solid with good battle action, with savage space combat and lots of Bolos fighting on their own. Yes, sometimes the humans get in the way, but without humans the Bolos have no reason to fight, to reach for victory and to overcome their own limitations. Anyway the Bolos spend a good first-third of the novel on their own, fighting for their lives, before the humans even make land-fall. THEN things really get rough!

5 out of 5 stars They just keep getting better........2002-03-03

How can you argue with a 32,000 ton Mk XXXIII Bolo Planetary Siege Unit? Veeeerrrry Carefully. Action, adventure, drug abuse and recovery, are there any bases Keith hasn't covered here? Well worth the read.

2 out of 5 stars Take out the human element........2001-09-23

If there was no human element in this book, it might be 4 stars. It has a slow start. The star of the book,is Victor a Bolo Mark XXXIII of the 4th Regiment, Second Brigade, First Confederation Mobile Army Corps, in the vanguard of an all-out Bolo strike against the planet Caern. The enemy is the Aetryx, shadowy, unknown beings who enslave other species with nothing less than the promise of immortality. As a savage interstellar war begins, Colonel Jon Streicher prepares to lead Victor and the rest of his reigment in a planetary invasion. But the landing falls into a trap. They find themselves stranded and desperately attempting to survive the hellfire chaos of modern warfare as Bolo faces Bolo-human hybrid in a cataclysmic showdown that will uncover unexpected truths, reveal hidden secrets, and even call into question the loyalty of the Dinochrome Brigade itself. Should have only had the Bolo elements in this book.

5 out of 5 stars What Battletech was built on!.......2006-05-25

While this book might not crack the top 10 for many people, it's my all time favorite! Now I must admit that I am a fan of Battletech before FASA sold the rights, but this book was a large reason why.

The second book about Grayson Carlyle and The Gray Death Legion, this book is where the Gray Death Legion is really formed and Carlyle's character develops into something special. William H. Keith Jr. paints some very colorful and entertaining characters that grow on you so fast that you'll hit emotional highs and lows as they train and suffer through this Kurita held planet's rebellion.

A must read for any fan of Battletech, even those new to the game. While it's built in a time than Wizkid's version of Battletech this is what the original game was all about. Give it a try as it's well worth a shelf all it's own.

I only wish this book could have made it to the big screen. I imagine the opening scene of Bannockburn (a Riflemen Mech) standing within the jungle in camo paint as a couple of fighters screeching overhead. Then all hell breaks loose...

    Happy reading and good hunting!

5 out of 5 stars A "keep-on-reading" tale about the Gray Death Legion.......1997-09-13

The Gray Death Legion, a mercenary group formed by Grayson Death Carlyle, takes on its first assignment -- to train rebels on a Draco world in anti-mech tactics. But when their way off the planet is destroyed, they must ally with the untrusting natives to free the capital city, the only way off the planet. Personally, I found this book very entertaining. It deals with freedom, loyalty, and life. This story will keep you reading way into the wee hours of the night. A must for any Battletech reader!

4 out of 5 stars A good tale with just one little problem..........2000-05-24

Okay, I'm a sucker for anything with the Gray Death Legion in it. I've always like Grayson and his band and even the totally formula routine of betrayal, overwelming odds, and final triumph, didn't ruin the fun for me. I must admit that the plot is the same basic one used in the first two books in this trilogy (Decision at Thunder Rift, and Mercenary's Star) but it contains some key elements that are fundamental to how the Inner Sphere "finds" the scientific breakthroughs brought about by Hanse Davion in later Battletech books.

The problem I have with this book is a continuity problem that leaves a hole in the plot you could fly a jumpship through. Ricol had a company of Battlemechs with him, clearly discussed when he and Grayson decide to cooperate and try to retrieve the Star League weapons cache. But in the final showdown when the Gray Death has its back to the wall, outgunned and facing a numerically superior foe, those 12 Mechs would have made all the difference in the world. But to make the final battle more "skin of the teeth" Keith reworks the plot and suddenly Ricol has no battlemechs with no explanation where they went. This error is really annoying but what can you do. Long live the Gray Death!

3 out of 5 stars Read one, already read them all.......2000-03-21

This book is nice, the action parts are good, but AGAIN? Once more Carlyle is betrayed, once more the Legion suffers, once more they lose their dropships, once more they face unsurmountable odds, just like in " Decision at Thunder Rift" and "Mercenary's Star".

5 out of 5 stars A tale of deceit and also of trust.......1997-09-13

The Gray Death Legion has just finished a year-long campaign for House Marik, but when they return home, they find their reputations destroyed. Accused of killing twelve million civilians, the Legion must prove themselves innocent of the heinous crime. Pursued by the enemy, the Legion flees. In order to survive, they must trust Grayson Death Carlyle's nemesis, Duke Hassid Ricol. The discovery of a Star League treasure raises the stakes, with the victor claiming the spoils, and the loser claiming their graves. Will the Legion survive? I found this book to be interesting, and this new chapter into the Gray Death was very informative. Unfortunately, this book was unable to win a perfect score because of a few dragging parts. This book may be a bad investment for those who have never read a Battletech novel, as there is little to no introduction about the world of 31st century combat, or the history of the wars that grip the Inner Sphere. But if you're a Battletech fan, you won't be disappointed. The interesting story, subplots, and brilliant depiction of the Gray Death will make you put this novel on a bookshelf for treasured finds. A must-read!

4 out of 5 stars Carrying on the Bolo Tradition.......2005-06-09

Mr. Keith's Bolo books do very well in maintaining the quality of the series. Like several reviewers of this and other Bolo books, I tend to view a Bolo book with too much emphasis on human drama and interaction as a waste of money. Mr. Keith is able to walk that fine line and write a book that melds well-developed human characters with the action and adventure we want from a Bolo book. I have enjoyed his contributions to this series and sincerely hope he writes more...I hope that the more recent "Road to Damascus" is not an indication of the way the Bolo series is going. That one has so much mother-daughter stuff and teenage angst in it that it should be serialized on the Lifetime Channel.

    1 out of 5 stars Bolo fallen.......2003-10-01

The early Bolo stories were touching, to say the least. Self aware, highly intelligent tanks which applied themselfselves selflessly to their duty. This book has gone a long way from there. From a military point it is unbelievable, even in its most basic tenets. David Drake assumes vast strides in technology and comes up with 170 ton tanks; well okay so it is SF. Here we see a 32000 ton "tank". If there is one thing military history has taught about armour it is to use tanks together in highly mobile formations. You only use very heavy stuff if you want to invite defeat. Using armour out of support range is to invite defeat. Here a single damaged Bolo takes on an enemy which not only was victorious but has had a year on planet to replenish itself, and and has vast numbers of highly intelligent weapons under a unified command. Please!

The first 150 pages consist of how deep humans have fallen and their bickering and complaining (reading one in ten words is quite enough). In the rest of the book there is action. This can perhaps be best illustrated by the Bolo's fight in the closing pages. The Bolo, in its own words, fires "fusillade after shrieking fusillade" with "all remaining weapons". A little later it "redoubles its hammerings" in spite of increasing damage. A little later onwards it "gathers its power". All in all the book reads like one of Ron Hubbard's efforts.

5 out of 5 stars Totally Gripping, Heart Pounding action and adventure.......1999-12-19

This book exceled among all others in my line of favorites. I have read various war books. Such titles are Team Yankee, Red Storm Rising, Hunt for Red October...etc. This book combines plot, and scenery to capture your atention, in even the first 3 pages. This book, being staged in the future, refers to past incedents, uses things that we are accustomed to, and explains things we otherwsie wouldn't understand in great detail. This book surprised me, and kept me on the edge of my seat, the only reason I put it down, was because school and sleep kept inturupting me. I recommend this book to all those who like adventure, suspense, and an all around greatly written book.

5 out of 5 stars Does Not Disappoint-- A Great Read.......1999-08-28

This was a totally satisfying bolo novel. I have read a number of others, but most of the best are in the past. I'm delighted that a talented writer has gotten his teeth into this series, and hopefully can continue to breathe life into it.

The personalities were developed very well for an action novel. As well as we could ask. Hector's personality came alive as his "blocks" were slowly removed, one by one, and his real personality emerged.

Battle scenes were gripping, and they were abundant. You got to really care about the characters, also. The ambiguous ending makes us wonder if William Keith is planning a sequel. I hope so.

One theme that unifies the book and adds a bit more than just the "thriller" aspect is the exploration of "machine intelligence." The aliens are machines also, and the contest is not just based on gunfire, but on whether Hector's mental processes can "checkmate" the alien thoughts of the /*/*/*/, as the invaders call themselves.

David Drake's books are great, but he has totally stopped writing future war novels. Too bad. Now let's just hope that Mr. Keith picks up the mission and pumps out a few more.

    Can't put this book down ! ! !

    5 out of 5 stars What? I cant give it 6 stars............1999-07-10

This has to be one of the best books I have read in my entire life. I have read it twice already, will wait a while, and probably read it again. The !*!*! are an awesome enemy, yet, the bolo is an awesome foe. The final battle is tremendous, as is all previous minor ones. There are never parts of the book that are dull. I have always liked bolos, and this was....just amazing.

2 out of 5 stars Mottly space opera, but good hard SF.......2001-09-20

On the plus side, this book is definitely hard SF with few fantasy elements. The technology is pretty well presented and basically plausible. Some of the technology seems to be based on the Kim Stanley Robinson series about Mars. The warstriders of the title are basically improved tanks that appear in many hard SF stories. However, though well described, they are not particularly central to the story.

There are various minor negatives. Characterization is so-so, and it's hard to feel much involvement with any of the characters. Lots of the plot involves pretty peripheral stuff, and though it is well told, those parts could pretty much have been cut out without harming the main plotline of the story. The big negative is the ending, which is a real wimp out. Happy ending, but totally unlinked to the rest of the story, just an easy out.

All in all, basically a book to painlessly kill a few hours.

5 out of 5 stars Pure Battletech Goodness.......2000-11-20

I read this one a while ago, but all I remember about the book is how much it rocked. Lots of action, and it kept your brain thinking. If you're a Battletechie (like me), read Tactics of Duty (another great book) then you'll definately want to read this one. I'm wondering why Keith hasn't written another one yet. Right now, I can't wait for it!
