5 out of 5 stars A 'must have' for all leaders........2006-06-17

If you take your job as a business leader seriously, this book is a 'must have'. As a business coach I use it in my practice with great success. For leaders (and managers who think they are leaders) and their teams it's an eye-opener. It gives insight in what it takes to turn a good team into a great team, and what great leadership is all about. If you want to be more effective as a leader and take your team to the highest level of readiness, read this book. It will change your life....and of those you lead.

2 out of 5 stars Management of Organizational Behavior.......2005-02-26

Not too bad as these books go but a tremendous amount of verbiage explaining the obvious. Excellent example of turning simple concepts in complex charts and definitions. I would imagine that people in the field love this hyperbole but it's BS to me and pretty much a waste of time to drudge though all of it.

5 out of 5 stars Goes where few texts dare to go: the real-world.......2004-03-15

I recommend this to managers as much as students.

Sure, the price seems like a lot of cash to shell out at first. But trust me, it is worth it. I had to read it for a Management class, and it started of like a typical OB text, illustrating the history of management studies (Taylor to Maslow to Mayo to Likert to ...). Good stuff, but pretty dull. Then, Hersey et al went where most scholars, even the supposedly worldly MBA types, fear to tread: real-world application!

The text covers all of the material covered Blanchard's "One Minute Manager," "Putting the One Minute Manager to Work," and a shelf load of other books. It also does a great job introducing Blanchard and Hersey's Situational Leadership, where the manager matches leadership behavior to a report's ability level and motivation. This replaces "Leadership and the One Minute Manager," and delves much deeper into the topic.

Hersey et al also cover:
- Behavioral shaping, and positive and negative reinforcement quite nicely
- Communications skills necessary to lead reports
- Power building, and using effective power bases ...
- The list literally goes on and on.

I use the concepts I was first exposed to here day in and day out. They work. My OB professor told us that, if he would be limited to just one book on management, he would choose this one. And, five years later, I agree. I am very glad that I did not sell this book back to the campus bookstore. I consult the book at least once a week while pondering both thorny and maundane problems with my employees.

You see, Dr. Davis? Some of us do listen.

5 out of 5 stars All about Leadership!!! Must read!.......2003-06-13

This book is one of my favorites! It leads you first through a complete review of management and leadership theories, then introduces the authors' famous SITUATIONAL LEADERSHIP model and theory. This book goes into great depth about the sit-lead model and theory, and is a great read. Want to be a better leader??? Read the book by the experts! ...

5 out of 5 stars Organized!.......2001-12-29

I was first introduced to Situational Leadership in the military quite a few years ago. This book did a great job of dusting off the cobwebs in the memory and proving that Situational Leadership is still a viable means of leading your people.

The book provides an overview of various management and human behavior theories, such as Maslow, Herzberg, Schein, Argyris, and McGregor. Then, fits them into a nice model deemed Situational Leadership. I must say that I've read the majority of the theories already and they do fit. Plus, if followed, the model is very effective in helping a leader in real world situations.

If you buy this book, you receive a host of valuable information. I think, besides involving you with the Situational Leadership model, the best attributes are the extensive lists of additional reading that are provided to you at the end of each chapter, and at the end of the book. If you're on a journey to better yourself as a manager and leader, the exhaustive list is well worth the price of the book. It saves you from buying the duds and "fadish" management/leadership books on-line without the ability to have them in your hands prior to purchase. Plus, the book gives you a good preview to the information contained in a book before you buy it.

All in all, if you're going to invest some time and money in a management/leadership book, definitely buy this book. You need to know this information and have it at your fingertips if you're going to survive in the organizational human behavior world as a leader.

4 out of 5 stars A long read, but time well spent........1998-11-15

I read this book because I am a big fan of Ken Blanchard and I was not let down. I could only take the book in small doses, taking over a month to read. However, situational selling to me was like a discovery, really opening my eyes to seeing the workplace and interrelationships much differently. I recommend this book to those who have the staying power of a long textbook type book.

    Book Description

This is Volume II: Since 1863 of LIBERTY, EQUALITY, POWER, Fourth Edition. LIBERTY, EQUALITY, POWER offers students a clear understanding of how America transformed itself, in a relatively short time, from a land inhabited by hunter-gatherer and agricultural Native American societies into the most powerful industrial nation on earth. The authors promote this understanding by telling the story of America through the lens of three major themes: liberty, equality, and power. This approach helps students understand not only the impact of the notions of liberty and equality, which are often associated with the American story, but also how dominant and subordinate groups have affected and been affected by the ever-shifting balance of power. This Fourth Edition retains the narrative clarity, unparalleled coverage, and thematic unity that are the hallmarks of LIBERTY, EQUALITY, POWER. It updates the text's proven ability to cover social and cultural history with such timely topics as globalization, the impact of science and technology, evolving roles for religion, and expands upon the text's extensively multicultural coverage. Backed by an ancillary package unmatched in this market, LIBERTY, EQUALITY, POWER makes its thorough, memorable coverage equally accessible to students and instructors. It's available in the following volume splits: LIBERTY, EQUALITY, POWER: A HISTORY OF THE AMERICAN PEOPLE, Fourth Edition (Chapters 1-31), ISBN: 0534627307; LIBERTY, EQUALITY, POWER: A HISTORY OF THE AMERICAN PEOPLE, Volume I: To 1877, Fourth Edition (Chapters 1-17), ISBN: 0534627315; LIBERTY, EQUALITY, POWER: A HISTORY OF THE AMERICAN PEOPLE, Volume II: Since 1863, Fourth Edition (Chapters 17-31), ISBN: 0534627323.

    4 out of 5 stars AP class.......2007-05-30

In reference to the other reviewers, the complaints here don't seem to address the actual content of the book - $95 is expensive for a paperback, but that's why the same book can be found for $20 under Used&New.

ANYWAY, I'm a high school student who ordered this for use in my AP United States History course this fall. The book is clearly laid out, the prose is engaging, and the parts that I have read so far are comparable to(and in some instances this one surpasses) Alan Brinkley's "American History: A Survey", which is ranked far better. I'll probably drop another review next year after the AP exam, but it seems to be clear and concise, and the resources on the CD-rom are invaluable.

1 out of 5 stars Textbook price-gouging going on here........2005-12-04

$95 for a paperback book is highway roberry.

Have been pricing out college textbooks on Ebay, Amazon, and the college bookstore. It's a bloody medieval guild these publishers have going here and professors who insist on the latest editions of texts are aiding and abetting the rip-off.

This is monopolisitic practice if I've ever seen it. If the industry doesn't rachet down this greed-fest, someone else will - and as far as I'm concerned, it can't happen too quickly. Shame on you all.

1 out of 5 stars Worst High School Textbook Ever.......2005-10-13

I teach an accelerated college prep US History class in a high school. Our department selected this book before I arrived at the school in what I've gathered was a flurry of political correctness hysteria to "The American Pageant's" emphasis on white men. Even if Murrin's book makes an effort to be more PC (sometimes to a fault) it makes the much bigger mistake of assuming that readers already have a fairly sophisticated background in American History. I think it's interesting reading, but then again, I have a degree in history, so trying to learn how the concept of 18th century mercantilism is connected to the 19th century concept of progress all on the same page isn't really a major feat of mental gymnastics. Most teachers in my department don't even use the book because it's too confusing for the kids. If I could have my way, we'd just sell them all and buy something that's (gulp) a little simpler.

To its credit, the book has a nice website with lots of maps and images and resources - but in my memory as a high school student (which was during the age of the internet), a clear, concise textbook was a foundation of learning and more important than a nice website. This textbook is no learning tool.

Paul Johnson, whose previous works include the distinguished Modern Times and A History of the Jews, has produced an epic that spans the history of the American people over the past 400 years. The prolific narrative covers every aspect of U.S. history, from science, customs, religion, and politics to the individual men and women who have helped shape the nation. His detailed, provocative examinations of political and social icons, from Lyndon Johnson to Norman Rockwell, are especially strong. Johnson's text is intelligent and rich with detail, and yet extremely accessible for anyone interested in a reinterpretive analysis of America's past.

What makes this book unique is Johnson's approach to this self-professed Herculean task. The prevalent tone throughout is optimism. Whether he's discussing race relations, industrialization, the history of women, immigrants, Vietnam, or political correctness, Johnson--a staunch conservative who was born, bred, and educated in England--is openly enamored with America's past, particularly the hardships and tribulations that the nation has had to overcome. He sees this story as a series of important lessons, not just for Americans but for the whole of mankind as well. At a time when other contemporary scholars find it easier to bemoan the past, Johnson offers the reader "a compelling antidote to those who regard the future with pessimism."

      Book Description

"The creation of the United States of America is the greatest of all human adventures," begins Paul Johnson's remarkable new American history. "No other national story holds such tremendous lessons, for the American people themselves and for the rest of mankind." Johnson's history is a reinterpretation of American history from the first settlements to the Clinton administration. It covers every aspect of U.S. history--politics; business and economics; art, literature and science; society and customs; complex traditions and religious beliefs. The story is told in terms of the men and women who shaped and led the nation and the ordinary people who collectively created its unique character. Wherever possible, letters, diaries, and recorded conversations are used to ensure a sense of actuality. "The book has new and often trenchant things to say about every aspect and period of America's past," says Johnson, "and I do not seek, as some historians do, to conceal my opinions."

Johnson's history presents John Winthrop, Roger Williams, Anne Hutchinson, Cotton Mather, Franklin, Tom Paine, Washington, Adams, Jefferson, Hamilton, and Madison from a fresh perspective. It emphasizes the role of religion in American history and how early America was linked to England's history and culture and includes incisive portraits of Andrew Jackson, Chief Justice Marshall, Clay, Lincoln, and Jefferson Davis. Johnson shows how Grover Cleveland and Teddy Roosevelt ushered in the age of big business and industry and how Woodrow Wilson revolutionized the government's role. He offers new views of Harding, Coolidge, and Hoover and of Franklin Roosevelt's New Deal and his role as commander in chief during World War II. An examination of the unforeseen greatness of Harry Truman and reassessments of Eisenhower, Kennedy, Johnson, Nixon, Reagan, and Bush follow. "Compulsively readable," said Foreign Affairs of Johnson's unique narrative skills and sharp profiles of people.

This is an in-depth portrait of a great people, from their fragile origins through their struggles for independence and nationhood, their heroic efforts and sacrifices to deal with the `organic sin' of slavery and the preservation of the Union to its explosive economic growth and emergence as a world power and its sole superpower. Johnson discusses such contemporary topics as the politics of racism, education, Vietnam, the power of the press, political correctness, the growth of litigation, and the rising influence of women. He sees Americans as a problem-solving people and the story of America as "essentially one of difficulties being overcome by intelligence and skill, by faith and strength of purpose, by courage and persistence...Looking back on its past, and forward to its future, the auguries are that it will not disappoint humanity."

This challenging narrative and interpretation of American history by the author of many distinguished historical works is sometimes controversial and always provocative. Johnson's views of individuals, events, themes, and issues are original, critical, and admiring, for he is, above all, a strong believer in the history and the destiny of the American people.

5 out of 5 stars great very helpful.......2007-05-06

johnsons book proved very readable unlike many of the textbooks and because he comes from across the pond you get a greater understanding of how and why and United States was founded the way it was. Other books don't get to how the ideals of the U.s. came to be. I also liked his slant on modern history vers. howerd zinn's veiw.

      5 out of 5 stars Great book........2007-05-04

This is a great book and the other reviewers who give it a tumbs up do a great job of explaining why, so there is little I can add. Johnson does a wonderful job wrapping together over 400 years of history into a one book which is no small thing. Its easy to read and grasp and almost 'see' history happening in the book. This is a must read history book if you want to learn about America.

3 out of 5 stars I would have like to been able to rate this higher, but..........2007-04-01

This history is a very readable and interesting one, however, there are a few problems. First, the history truly is of "American People", but only a select set. On some pages it throws out 20 names, few of which all but the more careful students will be able to remember. The book retraces important people over events, which makes it at times hard to follow.

Although I would peg myself as a conservative, and while this book admits to being an optimistic history, it goes too far in some respects. Though I loathe the apologistic, revisionist history of someone like Zinn, this book makes some unforgiveable omissions.

As examples, while slavery is labelled the abomination it was, the book really gives no insight into the lives of the enslaved. And while it at times goes into great details about some slave owners who treated their slaves especially well, it does not contrast that with "as opposed to what".

The book also completely ignores events such as Boss Tweed, Tammany Hall and Teapot Dome.

While there is a detailed account of America's first railways, there is literally NO mention of the Chinese labor that built them.

I stopped reading at about page 800. Up until about 1910, the book is reasonably well balanced in terms of Republican vs Democrats. From that point forward, however, all Democrats are malicious idiots and all Republicans are angelic saviours. Curiously at the same point the book takes this sharp turn you start to find grammatical errors and typos. If I were to make up a conspiracy, its almost as though the editor refused to continue once Johnson takes this stance.

Had Johnson opted to temper his bias in the 20th century section and to address the darker events in American history, this would have been a truly great work.

5 out of 5 stars A Must Have in your library.......2007-01-20

Paul Johnsons "A History of the American People" is a must read for anyone interested in learning history while feeling like you're reading a novel.

5 out of 5 stars Made me think!.......2006-12-28

Paul Johnson has done something incredible that no other author has ever done; he has enabled me to finish a book that appears the size of the Titanic and actually enjoy it!

This history book enables the average reader like myself to thoroughly look at the history of my country as never before. Johnson seems to turn many stones over and view them as no other historians have. The book is simple and easy to read and in no way is like a textbook!

After reading this book, I then purchased The History of the Jews also written by Johnson. At this point, I am struggling to finish the second Titanic of a book; never fear, in time I will finish this second whopper of a book because it too is simple to read and enlightening.

This book should be on any reading list! A writer who sees things through conservative eyes, but not so much as to alienate any reader left or right. This makes a book for the masses when you can attract all types of readers to read a subject many abhor like cancer, history. It made a history buff out of me!

Paul Johnson says that writing A History of the Jews was like writing a history of the world "seen from the viewpoint of a learned and intelligent victim." Johnson's history begins with the Bible and ends with the establishment of the State of Israel. Throughout, Johnson's history is driven by a philosophical interest: "The Jews," he writes, "stand right at the centre of the perennial attempt to give human life the dignity of a purpose. Does their own history suggest that such attempts are worth making? Or does it reveal their essential futility?" Johnson's history is lucid, thorough, and--as one would expect of almost any project with such a broad scope--a little wrong-headed. By the end of the book, readers will be grateful for Johnson's questioning of the Jews' confidence in their cosmic significance. However, readers may also be a little annoyed by his energetic inquiries as to whether this significance was man-made or providentially provided. Either way, it's a given: for a historian of Israel, this should adequately settle the question. Johnson's 600-page history is probably the best we've got by a living gentile--which is no small accomplishment at all. --Michael Joseph Gross

1 out of 5 stars entertaining but unreliable.......2007-03-02

I managed to read less than a half and all the way I had very strong sensation the author is not really familiar with the subject, he is making mistakes very characteristic for non-professional, amateur attitude. As if he doesn't really care about adhering to the reliable sources because he's got some really interesting and important tale to tell.

        5 out of 5 stars Service excellent.......2007-02-20

The book came very quickly and was packaged well. Service excellent. Book was in excellent condition, even better than advertised. I appreciate the professional service.

        5 out of 5 stars Penetrating Survey.......2007-01-09

With one gleaning only the word "cathedocracy" from this penetrating survey makes the book worthwhile. Mr.Johnson conceptualizes the Jewish people as a class of scholars/professors striving to actualize the teachings of the Torah in everyday life. The book reflects a breathtaking examination of what has been written about the Jewish people in English, incorporating most if not all of the current scholarship.

        3 out of 5 stars The Jews...and the Nations.......2006-12-27

It is well known amongst Jewish scholars and Sages that Israel was choosen amongst the all the nations, first and formost for their obidience and then their willingness to accept the yoke of the Tora without knowing really what it entailed. Hence, we have Abraham as our Father, and an example of the rock that we as Jews were hewn from...Amonay (G-D) loved Abraham and the subsecuent Patriarch and Matriarchs who brought for the legions of Yisrael, and through them and us, would all the nations be blessed. "Blessed" here in this context is more or less a legal transaction, not just a feeling. It is a state of Harmony, and perpetual peace and prosperity. As we all know this has not happened yet. Not for Israel nor for the Nations. When Christobal Colon went on his jurneys to of discovery, he took with his certain Converso navigators and shipmen, who were well versed in Hebrew, a forbidden language by the Universal Church of Christ. They prohibited every form of Jewish observance from territories belonging to the Universal Church of Christ, deeming it the "devils work" etc.,etc. That didn't stop the crypto Jews that were with Colon ( colon too being a crypto Jew) to dream about what could perhaps a discovery not of Gold or Silver, but more importantly the Lost tribes of Israel. If only they could find them, this would surely bring about the emergance of the long expected Messiah. While the Nations were expecting to make it big monetarily wise, the Jews and crypto Jews back in Europe had other more important Messianic expectaions. Why?
Because the temporal feelings of grandeur and success are just that temporal. In the life of observant Jews the emphasis is working towards the Eternal...This is what we have taught to the Nations through our Holy Scriptures. Of course, we can't take all the credit ourselves. It was an act of mutual relationship with Amony Eloheinu Melech haOlam, The L-RD G-D King of The Universe, blessed be He, who saw it fit to fellowship with a certain breed of men/women known legally as Benai Yisrael (sons of Israel). As history has shown, and what was expected by the jews, i.e., the discovery of the Americas did not bring about the Blessedness that has been promised to the Nations through Scripture. In fact, it brought total destruction to the Americas native inhabitants. Fray Bartolome de Las Casa, a Converso Jew, Chronicled the utter chaos of what the Spaniards and Portuguese perpetrated upon the New World, more than twenty five million deaths.
Johnson's book while well written, can not be taken as a true Jewish historical account, it lacks the sensitivity that only a Jew can comprehend. His reference to the "Old" Testament, is church influenced anti-Semitism, better known as replacement theology. Logically, the New in this case, Testament, replaces the Old Testament. For us Jews, these are clear indicators that the Author is clearly not objective in his writtings. I have to hand it to Johnson though on a different level, he really tried to capture the spirit of our History. I can recommend this book, but with reservations that it is a Masterful account of the outsider looking in, who is subject to undeniable biases which cannot be overlooked.

        5 out of 5 stars Inspiring.......2006-12-14

To anyone who wishes to succumb to the siren song of anti-Semitism, I heartily recommend this book as an antidote. Paul Johnson brilliantly condenses four millenia of Jewish history into several hundred pages, and in so doing pulls off the impressive feat of stuffing his book with fascinating information about the history of this long-suffering people, while simultaneously maintaining and developing several predominant themes (Jewish tenacity and courage, their moral and intellectual contributions to numerous civilizations, their determination to maintain a sense of self-worth amidst adversity) throughout the text. The end result is that Jews who are either unaware of or (as is regrettably the case on occasions) ashamed of their heritage can read this book and feel pride in who they are and what their people have accomplished, while non-Jews can peruse this same text and come away with a greater appreciation not only of the struggles of the Jewish people, but also of the larger scope of human history in general. A fantastic book.

The history of the 20th century is marked by two great narratives: nations locked in savage wars over ideology and territory, and scientists overturning the received wisdom of preceding generations. For Paul Johnson, the modern era begins with one of the second types of revolutions, in 1919, when English astronomer Sir Arthur Eddington translated observations from a solar eclipse into proof of Albert Einstein's general theory of relativity, which turned Newtonian physics on its head. Eddington's research became an international cause célèbre: "No exercise in scientific verification, before or since, has ever attracted so many headlines or become a topic of universal conversation," Johnson writes, and it made Einstein into science's first real folk hero.

Einstein looms large over Johnson's narrative, as do others who sought to harness the forces of nature and society: men like Mao Zedong, "a big, brutal, earthy and ruthless peasant," and Adolf Hitler, creator of "a brutal, secure, conscience-less, successful, and, for most Germans, popular regime." Johnson takes a contentious conservative viewpoint throughout: he calls the 1960s "America's suicide attempt," deems the Watergate affair "a witch-hunt ... run by liberals in the media," and deems the rise of Margaret Thatcher a critical element in Western civilization's "recovery of freedom"--arguable propositions all, but ones advanced in a stimulating and well-written narrative that provides much food for thought in the course of its more than 800 pages. --Gregory McNamee

How lucky Americans are to have cruised through the ghastly Twentieth Century in such abundance and relative safety.

The Italians, the Germans, the English, all the Africans, the Russians, the Poles and so many others have had a much rougher ride.

Mr. Johnson has done a good job of giving us a look at Modern Times.

A refreshing perspective that is missing from establishment leftist history writing.

The Bush library is only going to contain "approved" history so Mr. Johnson is making sure that "My Pet Goat" isn't the only volume on the shelves.

5 out of 5 stars Brilliant, Brilliant, Brilliant!!!.......2006-11-26

I'll second all of the other reviews that are positive about this book, they say most of what there is to say. What I can add is that Paul Johnson's book has done something for me that no other history book has been able to do; and that is seaming together the major events in our recent history that makes sense with clarity and understanding. In almost every case he backs up his views with data and fact which are facinating to see. Its one thing to say 'here is what happened' and simply report the event, it's a whole new level to say 'here is what happened, how it happened, and most importantly why it happened.' And on top of that make it very readable and entertaining along the way. I don't mean to minimize the importance of the book by saying it entertaining, but to make your way through 800 pages would be hard to do if it was written in a boring or dry way. Johnson acutally makes our modern history come alive and its actually far better than made up, ficational, story could ever be. I've learned so much from this book I've decided to wait one year and than go back and read it again because there is so much important stuff between the front and back cover it's worth it. So put your thinking hat on, open you mind, commit to the 1 month it will take you to digest the contents and read this brilliant book!

        1 out of 5 stars FLAGRANT RIGHT-WING PROPAGANDA.......2006-10-26

One could right an honest right-wing history, I suppose, by sticking to the facts. Paul Johnson's propaganda is simply lying. As just one instance of this, Paul Johnson assures the reader that President Johnson was reluctant to escalate the Vietnam War. He further assures us: "There is no evidence, as was later alleged, that the incident was contrived, to get America deeper into the war." And further: "But congress, by an overwhelming majority, passed . . . the "Tonkin Gulf Resolution' authoring the President to take vigorous measure to protect US forces." One would think that if he going to make such a claim that he should at least explain why the Pentagon Papers so explicitly state that the official account of the Tonkin Gulf attack was a deliberate deception. In the October HARPER'S article, "The Next War," Daniel Ellsberg claims to have had drawerfuls of critical working papers, memos, estimates, and detailed escalation options revealing the evolving plans of the Johnson Administration for a wider war, expected to commence soon after the election." Though far more inclined to trust Ellsberg than Johnson, either Paul or Lyndon, I admittedly have no way of knowing who is telling the truth, but I have not heard that the Pentagon Papers were not genuine.

When Johnson is not simply lying, he uses facts to support a viewpoint which he himself must know to not be true. "Support for intensifying the war was always greatest among the under thirty-fives," (at least prior to November 1968, "by which time the decision to get out had already been taken)." (By whom)? Considering that the young had been nursed on heroic World War II movies, trained in blind "patriotism" and educated in such a manner as to preclude questioning governmental authority, what else was to be expected? Once we woke up to what had been done to us, we, the American People, most definitely lost our stomach for the war. With "historians" like Paul Johnson, it is not surprising that another generation has been duped.

        4 out of 5 stars interesting sidebars.......2006-11-11

The book covers both history and the current political framework of the US. The history is covered briefly in the early chapters. In enough detail to explain key ideas and debates that shaped the nation. Federalism especially. We see how the early United States cobbled together an initially fragile federal government, that gained strength with the passing decades. Enough to prevail in the Civil War.

Most of the text describes many aspects of the contemporary scene. Including factors like the role of the media in effecting the political debate, by investigating issues. Here, the narrative delves into subtopics like a possible ideological bias by journalists.

The book also has sidebars that raise thought-provoking questions. These actually make the book distinctive, since the main narrative can be found in several other books on the subject. One interesting sidebar is why aren't Senators elected from subdivisions of their states, instead of state-wide? While this is commonly seen as immutable, it is actually not explicitly defined in the Constitution, and there were once Senatorial districts. What the sidebar omits, perhaps for space considerations, is that the establishment of these districts nowadays would open up an entirely new source of gerrymandering.
