5 out of 5 stars Platero is a masterpiece that you cannot afford to miss in your lifetime.......2006-07-04

This refers to the spanish edition by Catedra-

The intention of this review is to invite the english speaking world not to miss this wonderful book, luring you into it by sharing my experiences.

Of course we read some chants in primary school since this is considered the jewel of prose literature in spanish literature. Vaguely afterwards I remembered the rhymes as a teeager and forgot them as an adult. Then my son was born and around his age of 8 I started reading him the book. For those of you who are parents, do not underestimate the power of poetry in little kids, he did not understand a word of it at first and was rather unimpressed, later on with a bit of involvement, he began to "get the hang of it" (I love this colorful american expression) to the extreme that we always read it (he is now 13).

As an adult now I understand the beauty and splendour of Platero, the silvery companion of the poet in his travels and daily experiences of Moguer. (Platero is a donkey silver colored). Just as the Quixote became universal being such a "local spaniard", Platero has the same universality. I must agree with the reviewer who expressed that the translation must have been difficult because of the provincial prose.

Platero will open you to new sensitivity horizons, it will make you laugh and cry alike, it will make you look at donkeys in a totally new light for everytime I see one, the fond memories of Platero springs from within.. each chant is a a page or two long, so you can skip some, ponder on others, I strongly recommend to have a donkey stuffed dolls to play with your kids a re-enactment of the chants just read and make your on additions, the laughter and joy of this moments will be undeletable memories.

I lost something inner and spiritual in some time in my life, I recovered it through Platero, Juan Ramón Jiménez is the only poet that I consider an obligation to visit his tomb in Spain and thanks him for the gift he has brought on all of us.

I have several editions of Platero (because I also love the commentaries), in one of them (and I cite from memory), the poet describes a time when after Platero was published, a cherrished elderly maestro revered by the circle of young poets, was on his death bed offering copies of Platero to his friends... on receiving the young JRJ he shook his hand with the stregth of those leaving and he said " its just perfect... but do not grow conceited now.."

Its just perfect, do yourself a favor and take a trip accompanied by Platero, it will last a lifetime.

4 out of 5 stars Nicely done.......2005-12-26

This is a bilingual version of the classic Platero y Yo. It has Spanish on the left and a good English translation on the right. I would highly recommend this edition because Juan Ramon Jimenez can be difficult to read at times because of his use of regional vocabulary.

Book Description

Antonio Machado (1875–1939) is Spain's master poet, the explorer of dream and landscape, and of consciousness below language. Widely regarded as the greatest twentieth century poet who wrote in Spanish, Machado-like his contemporary Rilke-is intensely introspective and meditative. In this collection, the unparalleled translator Willis Barnstone, returns to the poet with whom he first started his distinguished career, offering a new bilingual edition which provides a sweeping assessment of Machado's work. In addition, Border of a Dream includes a reminiscence by Nobel Laureate Juan Ramon Jimenez and a foreword by John Dos Passos.

<B>from "Proverbs and Songs"</B>

Absolute faith. We neither are nor will be. <BR>Our whole life is borrowed<BR>We brought nothing. With nothing we leave.<BR>*<BR>You say nothing is created?<BR>Don't worry. With clay<BR>of the earth make a cup<BR>so your brother can drink.<BR>

Born near Seville, Spain, <B>Antonio Machado </B>turned to a career in writing and translating in order to help support his family after the death of his father in 1893. His growing reputation as a poet led to teaching posts in various cities in Spain and, eventually, he returned to finish his degree from the University of Madrid in 1918. He remained in Madrid after the outbreak of civil war, committed to the Republican cause, but the violence finally forced him to flee. He died an exile in France.

<B>Willis Barnstone </B>is one of America's foremost translator-poets, bringing into English an extraordinary range of work, from Mao Tse-tung to the New Testament.

5 out of 5 stars Reading is Believing.......2007-04-27

What an awesomely refreshing book of poems. Exhilarating and scenic Machado's writing is easy to connect with and explore. Refreshingly alive his words illustrate thoughts like no other. What a great read! If you have ever been a fan of poetry you should really check this book out.

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful poetry........2006-08-18

I don't usually read poetry however I'd hear so much about Antonio Machado I thought I give it a try. It was well worth it because I love his work and I feel that I have finally found a poet I can understand and realate to. Although his writing makes me feel good inside - its not because its cheerful writing. It really makes me feel like I'm outside on a sunny, cool, autumn, afternoon pondering my life. It is simple writing in the words, yet creates a deeply introspective, sad, lonely feeling inside my heart - but in a wonderfully meaning way. Now I want to go to Spain, to the places where Antonio lived and wrote, and roam the countryside seeing the places that formed his sights to life.

5 out of 5 stars Delving Deeper into the Dream Below the Sun.......2004-06-18

Antonio Machado is one of the world's greatest poets. This new addition to the slowly growing opus of Machado in English is the largest yet published, and the closest to a "Collected Poems" that we are likely to have for some time to come. (Might Mr. Barnstone be persuaded to put together a Collected Poems of Antonio Machado?) I believe there are certain felicitous pairings of poets and translators, and that the pairing of Willis Barnstone with Machado is just such a case. Mr. Barnstone's earlier volume, The Dream Below The Sun, (The Crossing Press,1981), was my first introduction to Machado's "spare, luminous, profound" poems, and so his translations have been imprinted upon my psyche as "Machado in English." I have read other translations of Machado's work, but none have yet surpassed Mr. Barnstone's.
This selection of Machado's work incorporates the 150 poems from The Dream Below The Sun, the sonnets included in Six Masters of The Spanish Sonnet, an expanded version of the evocative, highly readable and informative essay from that volume as an introduction, and about eighty-five new poems. The crowning addition here is Mr. Barnstone's inclusion of the long ballad "The Land of Alvargonzález," the longest single sustained poem that Machado wrote, presented here for the second time in English (the first translation was published in 1982 in the U.K. by Dennis Doyle). Though Mr. Barnstone rhymes in many of the translations (no mean feat, as I know from personal experience), or uses assonance to help capture the musical quality so integral to Machado's work, in this longer piece he has chosen a kind of blank ballad verse that reads with the fluency, directness and starkness of the original. Like many "folk ballads," the poem deals with greed, jealousy, murder (in this case: particide) and the supernatural force of a justice which metes out an appropriately grim punishment for the evildoers.
Mr. Barnstone has also included fuller translations of long sequences that Machado titled "Proverbs and Songs" (there are two different ones with this title: one from Fields of Castilla, 1907-1917, and another from New Songs, 1917-1930), plus numerous others featured in selected form in the earlier Crossing Press volume, and a few new ones. These sequences are full of intensely lucid perceptions, aphoristic incisiveness, paradoxical wisdom and sharp lyrical beauty. Their short, trenchant and suggestive nature brings many of them close to Japanese haikus in quality-certainly some of the closest produced by any major European poet.
I recommend this generous, beautiful volume to anyone who seeks a poetry that sings deeply and resonantly while imparting a heartfelt and soul-deep wisdom about the paradox of being alive as a human being. You will find yourself returning to these poems over and over again, as I have done.

4 out of 5 stars Platero y yo/Platero and I.......2007-01-29

The quality of the product is very good. The selection of the poems rather limited. Beautiful poems (i.e., "Angelus", "La flor del camino") were left out from the original selection. In general, I am please with the product.

One concern that I would like to express regarding the "one click" purchase option is that one should be able to choose his/her preferred mailing options. I was in no rush to receive this book and end up paying a shipping over 50% of the product price. No options to edit or preview before finalizing your purchase. I am afraid will avoid the "one click" experience in the future.

5 out of 5 stars Dar'bon, the mild anti-hero and Platero.......2005-09-30

A very sweet book and touching story. Not for the cynical. Read and try to imagine various friends and family members in the roles of these characters, as my friend did to me, calling me Dar'bon, as to my propensity at the time for burping and such, and while reading, laugh and celebrate a provincial, simple and endearing story of a simple lifestyle rich with meaning. Classic!

5 out of 5 stars The Complete Platero.......2001-11-20

This translation of Platero and I is the only "complete" translation into English of the Spanish Classic. It is also the most Spanish! This refers to the paperback edition.

5 out of 5 stars The Return to Simplicity.......2001-06-02

This is a beautiful little book by a Nobel Prize Winner of Literature that is too often neglected, Juan Ramon Jimenez.

Only Jimenez could make the blood of a leach in a stream of water into beautiful imagery. Children read this book as part of their curriculum in Argentina, however, this book can be equally enjoyed and appreciated by adults.

The story is a simple one: it is a first person (semi-autobiographical) account of a poet and his donkey in the mountains of Spain, appreciating, almost Zen-like, the simple beauties of life. The elements, children playing, leaches bleeding in a pool, everything seems beautiful in this book, and the descriptions are exquisite.

This is probably the best introduction to Jimenez, a book not to be missed!

Platero y yo es un libro tierno y sencillo que cuenta la relacion de un borrico y su amo. Yo lo recomiendo a todo aquel que quiera aprender espanol con esta pequena historia llena de poesia.

Book Description

Over one hundred vignettes in Stories of Life and Death create haunting images of the author's favorite subjects: women in love, children coping with tragedy, eccentrics, the emotions of compassion, bitterness, envy and longing.

Meet Mercedita Saro, the shy, perfectly-groomed beggar-child of the local drunk, whom Jiménez loves, protects, and treats with sweets, forbidden by her father. And Max, "the blue child," a West Indian boy traveling on the same ship as Jiménez to live with relatives in South America, who covered his black face with white powder "to look whiter to my brothers." See a woman in love, "white tender, bray, submissive, delicate." and the tiny ray of sun awakening a baby, which "has opened in his eyes a magic and flowery garden that holds him bewitched." Feel sadness at the death of a village girl, empathy for the mother of a sailor lost at sea, and compassion for an angry man who gets drunk for the first time.

The author creates an impressionistic landscape with subtle nuances of light and shadow, leaving tantalizing ambiguities to be resolved only in the eye of the beholder.

“As might be assumed from the title bestowed on this work, Jiménez's prose and poetical observations of the world around him, previously encountered in Platero and I, take on a somewhat darker more transcendent hue in this further collection. Gone is the unifying theme of itinerant man and donkey, and the physical boundaries of time and space. Here Jiménez allows his poetic vision to sweep far and wide, distilling and concentrating his art into thumbnail sketches of such disparate characters among many are a beggar-girl, a grape-harvester, an elderly canary and even the moon itself. Prefaced by a scholarly introduction from the translator, this is a fine and sensitive translation which captures gloriously the sheer lyrical beauty of Jiménez's writing.” —British Bulletin of Publications

          Book Description

Written while in exile in the United States, “Time” and “Space” were originally intended to appear together in a single volume. Not until 1986, however, did they appear so in Spanish— and not until 1988 were they published together in English. By presenting them together, Jiménez had wanted them to convey the same continuity of emotion, the same philosophical intensity, that he had experienced while writing them. “All My Life,” he wrote in his introduction, “I have toyed with the idea of writing a continuous poem...with no concrete theme, sustained only by its own surprise, its rhythm, its discoveries, its light, its successive joys; that is, its intrinsic elements, its essence.” That continuous poem is Time and Space the last book Jiménez wrote. Presented here in a bilingual edition, Time and Space will take readers of both English and Spanish on the longest and most sustained ride on the crest of poetry they will ever enjoy.

“The greatest poem in this Century...” —Octavio Paz

Antonio T. de Nicolás, translator and editor of Time and Space is also widely known for his highly acclaimed translation of the Juan Ramón Jiménez classic, Platero and I, as well as many other works in Spanish. His first book of poetry, Remembering the God to Come, is also being published by iUniverse.com.
