The book is very well written, and Issa uses historical references to show the importance of logistics. He also points out some failures, and conversely some success stories; the Panama Canal example comes to mind.

I would equate the book with case studies of logistics throughout history, with some keen insights into the future of logistics and the technologies that will take us there. I would recommend the book to anyone involved in the transportation / logistics industry.

Finally a resource on the logistics industry written in an interesting manner that without being full of graphs and figures. The past in stories and the predictions that detail the real opportunities and astounding changes.

Should have known better..........2006-04-03

I read the negative reviews and bought the book anyway, so I have no one to blame but myself. There are so few books on tournaments, that there aren't many other choices. I found a few tidbits that were interesting, but overall there was very little useful information in this book. I would have given it 3 stars if it weren't for the mistakes in the tables.

Jouaneh's core strategy is to only play "elite" and "playable" hands. Elite hands are hands that are favored more than 65% against a random hand (AA-TT). Playable hands are hands that are favored more than 60% vs a random hand. The table on pages 4, 5 and 7 (yes it's repeated 3 times, he had to fill those 82 pages somehow), has incorrect percentages for A8, A7,... A2. It makes it appear that AK, AQ,... A2 are all playable hands, where what I believe Jouaneh really meant was that AK-AT are playable hands (I assume this because he put these entries in bold).

To put it another way, the table indicates that A8 is as likely to win as AK; that A7, A6 and A5 are as likely to win as AQ, and that A4, A3 and A2 are as likely to win as AJ (he managed to get A9 correct).

Considering that this table forms the core of his strategy, it is unforgivable that it contains these mistakes. I looked in the front of the book for contact information for the author... nothing. I looked for the publisher... there is none! Here's a self-published book that wasn't proofed very well.

Harrington's book is on the way. Jouaneh's book is on it's way too (to ebay).

I loved it but 2 short...How to Land a Plane.......2006-01-14

This book is solid. Solid in thinking, strategy and execution but too short. I wanted more...and it was not there I almost felt as an airline passenger being instructed by the Tower how to land a plane in an emergency. Good solid advise that will enable you to win a tournament after you read it but does not create the repeatable habits and thinking that is required. It was as if the author was instructing someone how to play in a tournament 1 hour before the tournament. I absolutely loved the soft strategy components but once again, would have liked more. Overall I recommend this book for its pure solid content and unique insight, but once again, would have wanted more than the 80 pages. It is not often you hear a contrarian view, and when you do, you always want more !

I assess books based on results.......2005-12-07

I have probably read every single poker book out there with mixed reviews. I have ready many a book, where the strategy for ring games or tournaments sounds great, or is so convoluted that you really can not use the advice in a practical manner. I have found that this book has been the absolute best book for me from a results perspective for No Limit Texas Hold'em tournaments. I was skeptical at first due to the simple strategy, and aggressive approach. I thought that other players (especially online) would recognize my style and simply fold when I play or call a hand. The beauty of this strategy is that you play very few hands, assess your hands appropriately, do not allow yourself to be an early victim in the tournament, and then you are in a prime position to get callers when the chips are at a premium. I have been at the final table 3 times in the last month since I have read this book. At the end of the day, this book gives you the fundaments and you need to have the discipline to actually follow what it says. I would highly recommend it. Just stick to it and do not get fancy !

Short read and fairly basic for conservative players...

Here's what it comes down too:

The people that gives it 4-5 stars are generally internet
players or usually play with their friends at house games
once a week...they have never stepped into a Casino
poker room...

I'll tell you the secret to winning an online game...unless
you just wanna have fun...just sit on your butt and play
only high cards...you will win consistenly...trust me...

The people that gives it low ratings have read alot of
poker books and been grinding at actual cash tables or
played in multiple tourneys...

They know what it's all about...sure you can play
conservative sometime but there are alot of other
factors to winning in poker...especially at No Limit
Holdem...

Get yourself Harrington's Vol 2...it's a much better
read and teachs you some advance concepts...

I could always spot and internet player at a
cash or tournament live game...it's fairly easy
to make money off them...

One of 3 strategies to Win Poker Tournaments.......2005-11-03

I would say that this book details one of the three fundamental strategies to winning in a poker tournament. You typically have the agressive/loose strategy (play early and play often, get a chip lead, play more hands), and the moderate strategy (limp in early, maintain chip count, and tight play to the end of the tournament), and the conservative (tight, conservative hand selection, and extremely aggressive play when you hit a hand). This book details this last strategy which is in my mind the least talked about and the most difficult strategy to actually follow because it demands unbelievable patience and great resilience (as you will have bad beats). I have used all three strategies in my tournament play with varying success. What I have learned is that whatever strategy you use, you need to get lucky at some point to win. This book details the best and most appropriate long term strategy for winning and allowing luck to help you win. I can say that I enjoyed the book, I knew most of the fundamental hand selection stuff, but the strategy and focus on soft strategy was excellent. Short book, and a quick read by the way, dont expect a manual....

Bummer.......2007-06-25

Wow, what a disappointment. I kept thinking, This isn't translating well. I don't think it was the English as much as that the ideas were a bit much for my children. We do have a cherry tree, but they couldn't appreciate the poetry because they had a hard time figuring out what was going on. The "seasons" theme was distracting. It seemed like just as soon as they were getting the hang of it, the book flipped the script on them. The illustrations are lovely, so this could be a nice book for the kids to study the pictures, but definitely not a lapbook to read at bedtime.

The power, the beauty of each poem comes from words erased, struck out. OR, in the minds of the greatest writers of haiku, may never have been considered.

Translator Sam Hamill has a heightened sensitivity for nuance. He 'listens' to any subtle variation of sound or meaning, and also the changes that evolve through generations. This reviewer considers him the "translator-of-choice". Wouldn't it be a joy and honor to have your own writings translated into Japanese by this man?

Hamill's thorough knowledge of the writings of the greatest authors of haiku is rich from a friendship that spans the ages. It rewards him - and his study doubtless brings occasional surprises still. Kobayishi Issa lived from 1763-1827 and in his "Song of My Life" we find travel notes interspersed with haiku. These "seventeen syllables" are interludes that expand our understanding of the author's progression of work and philosophy and bring readers deep joy.

In the next section poems are presented in English and Japanese. A wide range of subjects give the expected seasonal connections, from which I have chosen these examples:

With my folding fan
I measured the peony --
as it demanded

So many breezes
wander through my summer room:
but never enough

Before this autumn wind
even the shadows of mountains
shudder and tremble

I know everything
about the old householder,
even his shiver

Inspiration, contemplation and meditation each play a role in Issa's creative mind. He was sad about the loss of his daughter and son but wrote verses that brought laughter to other children:

The firefly departs
so quickly, so breathlessly
it leaves behind its light

A watercolor by Kaji Aso decorates the cover of "The Spring of My Life" and there are many 'haiku paintings' that speak to the meaning of Issa's words. Reviewer mcHAIKU believes the most rewarding way to read haiku is to allow its music into your soul with gratitude.

I found this book's content very interesting and the prose style very easy to read.

In it you will get to know the haiku poet Kobayashi Issa intimately through his own thoughts.

Much of Issa's haiku focuses on nature's small animals and insects like the turtle, the frog, the cricket, the lowly fly, etc.

He was obviously a very sensitive and compassionate human being.

Issa talks about parts of his life and we get to know his haiku very well.

I like the way the content is laid out:

In the "Spring of My Life" section, portions of Issa's life are told in short prose passages with a poem or poems following; the poems tend to highlight what was just said in each previous prose passage.
And then in the "Selected Haiku" section of the book we have only haiku with no prose.

One MUST judge a book by its cover!.......2000-09-14

I bought this book for three reasons: a pre-existing love for Issa's poetry, the picture on the front cover, and the review by Ramon Melendez. Really, I have little to add to his review since he sums up the book very nicely. I haven't even finished reading it...What I would like to write are my first impressions. It was a delight simply to hold this book in my hands: it's size and shape are unique, reflecting the uniqueness of the words and worlds inside. Those colours on the cover reflect, perhaps, the colours of Issas "canvas" as he composes beatiful poems, so visual, delicate and sensitive. This book even smelled nice - yes, it is the nicest smelling book I've ever smelled.

Sam Hamill's translations are wonderful: he (successfully) attemps to retain the intended rhythmic and visual effect in the original Japanese poetry - so very little (if anything) is lost in the translation (as far as I am aware). Comparing these translations with some others I have read, subtleties become apparent in Hamill's translations where others have left me confused and disappointed.

A book of a rare beautiful simplicity.......2000-05-06

This is one of the most beautiful books I have read. Issa's story is moving, deeply humane yet not tainted by any melodramatic tendencies. Framed in the Japanese tradition of haiku poetry his poems to his daughter are tender and moving and reveal a deep appreciation of life, beauty and simplicity.

good reference for verbs, prepositions, and objects.......2002-03-28

If you're like me, you have a hard enough time just picking up vocabulary, let alone trying to remember which prepositions are used with certain verbs, and which verbs can take objects in the dative, genitive, prepositional, or instrumental case. This book covers all these areas and gives good examples.

My only complaint is that sometimes verbs are shown with their aspectual pairs, and sometimes they aren't. For example, the perfective verb kupit' is listed by itself, but the listing for the imperfective form pokupat' shows both forms.

Truly indespensable.......2001-11-27

I've been using this book for 1 1/2 years now and its dog-eared quality is second only to that of my main textbook. Its sample sentences are what bring new verbs alive to me. I've had Russian friends tape record these sentences as I've encountered new verbs, so I've gotten the benefit from both print and aural presentations of the book's contents. If I hadn't bought this book I would have had to invent it myself. It, together with 501 Verbs: Fully Conjugated and the Russian/Eng dictionary are my triumvirate. There is zero chance you'll regret this purchase.

Anyone studying Russian should have this book. The many examples of usage are what make it so incredible. It does't replace a standard dictionary, but it is an outstanding supplement. I can say that it is a big help to me and is a book that I highly recommend to people.

One of the best verb references for Russian!.......2000-12-14

Although it isn't as exhaustive as Daum and Shenk's verb tome, this book is perhaps even more essential for the Russian language learner. Its strengths are that it not only covers petty much all but the most specialized verbs (believe me, 750 verbs are more than you'll ever actively use), but it also illustrates them in context -- giving you the variant meanings when used with different cases and in conjunction with different prepositions. These last two points pose the biggest difficulties in using Russian verbs properly, once the learner has mastered the conjugations and the idea of aspect. Regular practice with this book would benefit ever the most advanced students of Russian.

"Must Read" for those working in Muslim organizations.......2005-05-01

I came across this book as a nice complement to the other books on leadership that I have been reading in part due to my small business association as well as the completion of my MS in education administration. Thus, being familiar with the current literature on the subject, I very much enjoyed the synthesis this book brings from the Islamic perspective. The authors have obviously done their homework on the subject at hand, offering a healthy connection between contemporary writings on leadership in general with Islamic principles and healthy examples of Muslim leadership from the Islamic legacy. One of the areas a non-Christian reader will often encounter in the leadership literature is the role of religion, faith, or prayer - which is usually presented in the Christian context. As a Muslim, I adapt these to my own situation by applying what is relevant in the Islamic context. Often I dream of a day when modern Muslims will begin to contribute to this genre of literature, as I believe we have much to offer - and in this book, I was not disappointed.

Chiefly, the book espouses leadership rooted in Islamic values and aimed at effective teamwork while mentoring new leaders from within. It is balanced in that it helps address difficulties encountered in common scenarios. The one most common in Muslim organizations occurs when leadership is too directive. However, I also found the material on the opposite scenario to be helpful as well: when leadership is so non-directive that followers are left without any leadership at all. For example, in discussing delegation, the authors caution: "delegate, but do not abdicate". They also discuss how gauging the maturity level of followers is important to determining the appropriate style of leadership. For those whose tendency is to resort to heavy-handed management, the book serves as a crucial guide to developing a climate of teamwork and mentoring. For those who tend to trust subordinates in their abilities from the beginning, there is beneficial advice as to how to cultivate this ideal when it is not automatically present.

My only caution is when it comes to the use of the term "Islamic" in the sense that at times, the misuse of this term results in a fixed value being placed on what it describes that is not necessarily valid. The title for example, "An Islamic Perspective", is fair enough in that the word "perspective" offers us a sense of flexibility on the subject. However in chapter 7, "Using Multiple Frames...", the so-called "Islamic frame" did not necessarily strike me as an absolute. Certainly, among the frames and their scenarios, there are obvious problems with some that are important for the reader to recognize and identify. But understanding the situational appropriateness of a certain approach is critical to adopting the right one for a given circumstance rather than trying to conform to only one simply because it is deemed "Islamic". Similarly, in the last chapter, the section about Khurram Murad (God have mercy him) idealizes an "activist" definition of Islam and Islamic work. For me personally, in the years since 1999 when this book was published, I have come to accept a broader definition of Islam and Muslims that values the contributions of Muslims who are not necessarily bound to "Islamic" movements and activist groups. For the most part though, the book is not susceptible to this problem.

The authors, both Muslims and professors of management at North American Universities, have offered a great service to Muslim communities through this book. Though the book is oriented toward Islamic activism, it is fittingly so in the sense that its primary audience is composed of workers in Muslim organizations. I am a firm advocate of "book of the month" type activities that promote solidarity and shared values. This book could be adopted in that regard, or it could be used as part of an induction / orientation program for new members. The principles are conventional enough to help form the policy basis for the management of Islamic organizations, especially where too often the case is that the organization is subjected to the whims of elected board members who are well intentioned, but lacking in the prerequisite training in management and leadership. Using a book like this, leaders can agree to operate within the framework it provides, trusting that it is based on a balanced synthesis of Islamic and scientifically researched leadership principles. I think it is a "must read" for every person working or volunteering in a Muslim organization.

This is a terrific and thorough examination of the work of Chant Avedissian, an Egyptian-Armenian artist. First, the book is gorgeous, all colour plates printed beautifully with a great introduction that tells about the artist and also about the social and political framework of Egypt and how the work fits into that. The plates are divided into categories by subject matter. Second, the work is really beautiful and demonstrates the influence on the artist of his travels (to the far east, and west) in the lush patterns and references, and the mediums, (often monotypes on cardboard). It captures this body of Avedissian's work wonderfully. The Cairo Stencils series uses pattern, portraiture and text to capture the richness and complexity of Egypt. Avedissians work is a historical (yet contemporary) visual tour of the Egyptian psyche.

Being one fanatic person when it comes to Ghada Samman's works, The Square Moon is definitely one of my favorite books. Easy to read, yet makes one think and use their horizon in examining the unusual. This book says a lot -without preaching-and encourages the reader to explore more in their own lives.
