Book Description
"If you wanted to kill your spouse and get away with it, you had to do something truly ingenious: something that wouldn't even be perceived as murder. And that was the service that Andrew Rusk had found a way to provide. Like any quality product, it did not come cheap. Nor did it come quickly. And perhaps most important of all, it was not for those with weak constitutions. Demand was high, of course, but few people were truly suitable clients. It took a deep-rooted hatred to watch your spouse die in agony, knowing that you had brought about that pain. But on the other hand, some people bore up remarkably well."
With these words, New York Times bestselling author Greg Iles returns to his trademark Southern milieu in this terrifying thriller, an unnerving tale of evil lurking beneath the veneer of idyllic suburban life. Brimming with the masterful suspense and intense psychological drama that made Turning Angel, Blood Memory, and The Quiet Game bestsellers, True Evil tells the chilling story of a divorce attorney who may be orchestrating the deaths of his clients' spouses, bringing new meaning to the phrase "'til death do us part."
Dr. Chris Shepard is thirty-six years old, newly married, and well on his way to a perfect life. Or so he believes. But that future is forever cast into doubt the day Special Agent Alexandra Morse walks into his office and drops a bombshell: Dr. Shepard's beautiful new wife is plotting his murder. Shepard is so shocked that he almost throws Agent Morse out of his office. Yet once he is alone, doubt begins to gnaw at him. Paranoia magnifies the small cracks in his marital relationship, and soon he can have no peace unless he knows the truth. When Agent Morse reappears, Chris agrees to act as bait to help her unravel the divorce lawyer's scheme, which may already have cost nine unsuspecting spouses their lives.
At the center of the mystery lies a maddeningly simple question: If these people really were murdered, why can't the FBI prove it? Rigorous autopsies have uncovered no forensic evidence of foul play, and the police believe no crimes have occurred. As Dr. Shepard and Agent Morse struggle against an invisible adversary, Shepard realizes that he's working with a desperate woman. The reason: the killer's last known victim was Alex Morse's sister, who from her deathbed accused her husband of murder and extracted a vow that Alex save her ten-year-old nephew from his father. This has driven Alex to risk both her life and her career to fulfill that vow. But Chris Shepard soon feels desperation of his own. As he probes his wife's hidden past, he is confronted by the probability that the woman he loves wants him dead.
He has adopted her son and given her everything he has to give, and yet somewhere out there, a killer with the brilliance to outwit the top forensic scientists in the world is closing in on him.

Does True Evil really Exist?? .......2007-06-11
Greg Iles has written another page-turner thriller. It is no surprise to fans of Iles that he builds his story line and continually adds to it as each chapter unfolds. It's like peeling an onion to get to the center of the story.
His characters are complex, and as we go along, more and more details are revealed about each one.
This book has a large cast of characters. The premise is almost science fiction in nature, ALMOST. We begin to believe that a cancer-causing virus is plausible. Maybe it has already been done. If so, then the research Iles does to create his fiction is extensive.
We have all the elements of a good thriller, and evil doctor, a money hungry, greedy, manipulative lawyer, a rogue FBI agent, innocent victims, including children, government conspiracies, medical/bio agents of destruction, uncooperative government agents, and a heroine who won't give up. What more could we ask for in a thriller?
Some of Iles books are just too technical for me to follow, but this one made even the medical/technical aspects clear enough for me to understand and follow along.
The story is fast-paced, they are under a time limit to stop this evil person, and the justice at the end is fitting to the crimes committed.
All in all, this was an enjoyable read and one to keep you thinking of the implicated possibilities long after the conclusion.
Thriller from the first page.......2007-06-08
I love all Greg Isle's books, but this one is at the top, or close. From the first few pages on, it is exciting, scary, sad and happy, all at once. The good guys are really good and the bad guys bad. My husband kept laughing at me, when I would say, outloud "boy he is one bad guy". Now hubby is reading the book and knows why I kept saying that. It seems whenever I finish one of Greg's books I actually get depressed cause I can't wait for the next one. The title alone tells the story. He has a wonderful imagination, can handle any subject well and keeps us wanting more and more. Yes, John Grisham is fun to read but nothing like Greg Isles. Anyone that hasn't starting reading Greg should tomorrow. For me, James Patterson has lost my interest, now it is all about Greg. NIta
Best Iles to date!.......2007-06-07
This is the best Iles book to date - a detailed thriller not a 3-day treadmill read (like recent James Patterson). As a healthcare professional, I think the author handled a medical topic fairly well. Although he obviously does not have a medical background, his research was thorough. The book was also very suspenseful; I was up late reading it for at least 3 nights. Iles deserves to be recognized - right up there with Baldacci and Grisham.
Another Excellent Page Turner By Greg Iles.......2007-06-04
I am a long-time fan of Greg Iles. His writing is excellent, his stories are interesting, his characters well developed. The pace never stops, and the story grabs you from the first page. I have not read all of his books, but I have read all from the past four years and liked all but Turning Angel. I would write a separate review of that book, the writing was also excellent, but I have to admit, the story made me queasy - the older man/teenage girl relationship just didn't do it for me. Anyway, I'm glad that he returned to a more suitable subject (if a story about serial killings can be suitable). True Evil is another wonderful page turner. As I've said before, Greg Iles is not for the light of heart - his novels are quite long but worth every page, every word. One of the few authors I can't wait to see a new book published.
Riveting original thriller.......2007-05-25
This was my first Greg Iles book, and I am now a certified fan! An original premise, combined with first-rate writing and a fast-paced plot, make for an engrossing and entertaining read. I love thrillers, and this book did not disappoint. It was just a hair too long - not from the standpoint of not being able to finish the book, but rather that I think the last hundred or so pages probably could have been compressed a little. Nevertheless, this was an outstanding book, and I read it in fewer than 3 days despite the 500+ pages. It's hard to find a thriller with a truly original storyline (a la the incomparable "Dexter" series by Jeff Lindsay), but this book does it. A truly satisfying novel.

Raymond Chandler once proclaimed that the first-person narrator should never turn out to be the villain in a good mystery or thriller. Luckily, the excellent writer Greg Iles has seemingly ignored Chandler's advice. Iles has created a character--Harper Cole, a futures trader and online pornographer--who could very well be the person killing off subscribers to his Internet sex service. Or is it Miles Turner, Cole's very odd colleague? If you thought that stalking a killer on the Internet had been done to death in books and bad movies, this one will have you pushing the reload button on your browser. Other Iles books in paperback include Black Cross and Spandau Phoenix.

One of Greg Iles' Best Novels.......2007-04-29
I'm a fan of Greg Iles, who I believe is one of the best thriller writers around. MORTAL FEAR is one of his first novels, and I think it's definitely one his superior efforts. I typically read hundreds of thrillers a year, and this is one of the most exciting novels I've read in quite some time.
MORTAL FEAR has a fairly standard serial killer plot, but Iles elevates this book through his rich prose and great characterization. All of the characters, including the supporting ones, are fully fleshed out and have remarkable depth. This book is overlong (over 600 pages!), but Iles is a great plotter, and I finished the novel in just a few sittings. It gets better and more involving as it goes along, which I find a rare achievement among thriller books.
The flaws in this book are typical for Iles. The book drenched with a lot of sex and verges on the melodramatic in some scenes. The protagonist of this novel is highly flawed, and makes some serious eye-rolling mistakes. But this is the way Iles writes nearly all of his books, and these flaws didn't really detract from the storyline that much.
Overall, MORTAL FEAR is a great thriller. In addition to this novel, I recommend Iles' THE QUIET GAME, 24 HOURS, and DEAD SLEEP.
Very Interesting.......2007-03-27
I'm a big fan of Greg Iles. The way he covers different subject matter makes his books very interesting, because you never really know what to expect. Although I would have liked to find out what happened to Eleanor Rigby - she just disappears.
If you like Greg Iles, you'll like this one.
I read this book.......2007-01-22
About 3 years ago and I could not put it down he had me riveted.
I also saw that he used to be in a real band called 'Frankly Scarlet' and I found an old CD here on Amazon by them but he wasn't mentioned in the credits on it when it arrived so I don't know if it was/is the same band.

I can't believe I read the whole thing, but I did. 564 pages of plodding prose. Silly at times. I'll give his others a read. Baywatch reruns would have been a better choice. :)

Greg Iles lives up to the promise of his previous bestseller, 24 Hours, with a new thriller that showcases his ability to deliver top-level suspense as well as multidimensional characterization. When Jordan Glass, a world-renowned photojournalist, happens on an exhibit of a series of paintings known as "The Sleeping Women," she is stunned to discover that one of the models--a nude who, like the other women in the paintings, looks dead rather than asleep--is her mirror image. But Jordan knows the face in the painting isn't her; it's her twin sister, Jane, who disappeared from her New Orleans home more than a year ago, and is presumed to have been murdered by a serial killer who's been snatching women off the streets of the Crescent City for at least that long. None of the bodies of the missing women have turned up, but their faces match the models in the other Sleeping Women paintings. A veteran FBI agent named John Kaiser brings Jordan into the Bureau's hunt for the anonymous artist, who may also know something about the disappearance of Jordan's father in Vietnam almost 30 years before.
This is a taut, well-crafted thriller with a nice secondary love story that's woven into the action without slowing it down. Jordan is a fascinating, many-sided character who's a little too tough to be wholly believable, but that's a minor quibble. While winning well-deserved new fans for Iles, Dead Sleep will keep his readers awake until the very last page. --Jane Adams
Book Description
They are called "The Sleeping Women." A series of unsettling paintings in which the nude female subjects appear to be not asleep, but dead. Photojournalist Jordan Glass has another reason to find the paintings disturbing...The face on one of the nudes is her own-or perhaps the face of her twin sister, who disappeared and is still missing. At the urging of the FBI, Jordan becomes both hunter and hunted in a search for the anonymous artist-an obsessed killer who seems to know more about Jordan and her family than she is prepared to face...
"Hair-raising...Iles continues to scare the living daylights out of readers." (New Orleans Times-Picayune)

Slightly better than Mediocre.......2007-06-07
Too heavy of a hand on the Brilliant Woman/ Stupid Cops theme.
Enjoyable, but Outlandish.......2007-01-13
I read a lot of thrillers, and I really enjoy Greg Iles' work. He is really excellent at creating fascinating, complex characters. Most of the characters in his books are highly intelligent adults, and he is really superb in how he crafts his dialogue. Iles is also highly skilled in structuring plots that keep the reader turning the pages. In terms of writing quality, Iles is probably one of the best suspense writers working today.
DEAD SLEEP is a very good suspense novel that contains all the strengths I just described. This is a serial killer book, but with an interesting twist -- the victims of the killer are featured in a series of highly successful paintings. Much of this book centers on the FBI investigation of this killer, which focuses on some highly eccentric members of the art world in New Orleans.
The flaw with DEAD SLEEP is the problem I have with much of Iles' work, which is that the plot is outlandish. Jordan Glass, the heroine, is a 40-year old photographer with no law enforcement experience. Despite this fact, she practically takes control of the FBI investigation, outsmarting a group of highly experienced professionals. In-between interrogations (which she often takes charge of, despite her complete lack of experience), Jordan also finds some spare time to kindle some romance with a hunky FBI agent, in a subplot which I personally found contrived and ludicrous. The ending of this book is equally silly, with a remarkably unbelievable explanation of why and how the killer committed the murders.
But that's okay. Iles is a highly skilled writer, and this book is a lot of fun to read despite it's over-the-top nature. I read this book in two sittings and thoroughly enjoyed it. My advice, however, is to make THE QUIET GAME your first novel from Iles; I found that book a little bit more believable than this one, and just as well written.
Perfect Page Turner.......2007-01-07
This book was chosen as a good bed-time read but it had me ducking out of chores to get another chapter in all weekend! The characters are developed deeply enough without having to troll through several annoying subplots, and the story winds and weaves at a fast pace yet doesn't leave you having to "take notes" to keep up.
The story is exciting, well executed and timed perfectly. The book keeps a great pace and does not fall for that rushed ending that so many do.
Well worth the weekend spent reading it!
strong woman.......2007-01-05
With well-drawn settings from New Orleans to New York to Hong Kong, Greg Iles presents Jordan Glass as a strong woman at the top of her field as a photo-journalist. She even gets to enjoy sex, a rare thing for a female lead. The serial killer plot is truly creepy, if a bit of a cop-out at the very end.
compelling.......2006-11-10
Another excellent read by a very talented yet underrated author. Thanks for the ride Greg!

Eve Sumner has an uncanny resemblance to a long-dead woman with whom John Waters was once obsessively in love. The successful Mississippi oilman's college affair with Mallory Candler ended long before she was killed, but the mysterious Eve knows things about that affair that only Mallory could have known. That's more than a coincidence, since Eve is actually Mallory's reincarnationor, at least, she's the corporeal body into which Mallory's restless soul seems to have migrated. Long before the bizarre denouement of this supernatural thriller--a departure for Iles, whose previous thrillers have been much more straightforward--the reader's sympathies have been engaged by Waters, a decent man whose best friend may be his worst enemy and whose past may destroy his future. Iles has many gifts as a storyteller, including ingenious plotting and solid pacing, both of which are on display here, but this foray into the occult doesn't show them off to best advantage. --Jane Adams
Book Description
The beautiful stranger John Waters has just met reminds him too much of his old girlfriend-because she is.
Customer Reviews:
Not one of Iles' Best.......2007-04-17
I'm a big fan of Greg Iles, and I think some of his thrillers are genuinely terrific, most notably THE QUIET GAME, DEAD SLEEP, BLOOD MEMORY and 24 HOURS. I also believe that Iles deserves a lot of credit for not writing the same novel twice. Each one of his books is different, so just because you love one of his novels doesn't meant that you will like the others.
I enjoyed SLEEP NO MORE, but I must admit the storyline was off-putting. This novel involves a large element of the paranormal, and I didn't find the plot to be particularly believable. This book also deals with the issue of sexual obsession, leading to a large number of relatively graphic sex scenes that quickly become repetitive and boring. I also didn't care for the main character that much -- he struck me as a weak, indecisive man for most of the book. The ending was also a bit of a cop out, but I can't say more without ruining the story.
That being said, SLEEP NO MORE is original and undeniably exciting. Iles knows how to structure a good suspense novel, and I remained tense until the last few pages. So it's a worthwhile page turner, especially if you like stories involving an element of the supernatural. But if you're new to Iles, you may want to try one of his best novels first, like THE QUIET GAME.
Happily Ever Afterlife.......2007-03-26
I've read only one other Greg Iles book, the excellent "Turning Angel." I do understand Iles' body of work to cover a variety of genres. "Angel" is a legal thriller in the thoughtful, literate vein of Scott Turow, set in the Mississippi Delta geography of John Grisham. "Sleep No More," written in 2002, is also set in Natchez, Mississippi (and features some peripheral characters who starred in other Iles novels), but for the story itself, Iles steps into Stephen King/Dean Koontz territory - another genre leap he acknowledges in a note to his faithful fans. The tale gets underway briskly: John Waters, a happily married and successful oil driller, feels haunted by a college lover - long since dead - who appears to have returned in the body of a hot-looking neighbor. Iles seems to take for granted the reader's reluctance to accept a supernatural premise, so he dangles the rational explanations as long as possible. Which is to say, until we all agree the rational ones are so far-fetched that the only explanation left is supernatural: that it is possible to move your soul - including your memory and your temperament, complete with psychotic mood swings - into the body of another person. Once Iles commits to that, the story occasionally turns comical in ways that seem unintended, or at least unacknowledged. When a character describes how one can willfully transport her soul into the body of another during sex - aye, even at the very moment of climax, when the mind is completely free of any sense of self ... well, please forgive my juvenile tittering. And when your long-gone lover speaks to you from the body of your business partner-slash-best friend - a guy who had also bedded this woman back in the day - buddy, that is high camp, and there's no point trying to hide it. Yet Iles writes these scenes completely straight-faced. Still, if you've gotten that far, you're hooked, and Iles rewards you for sticking around until the end. And I give him credit for not backtracking into the natural world for the forced, convoluted, earthbound wrap-up many of his best-selling colleagues might have tried.
Unfortunate waste of paper.......2007-03-22
I'm a huge Greg Iles fan. After reading the back cover I thought this book would be as good as the rest. It was well written, but the plot was absurd. If you like realistic thrillers this is not the book for you. Try a different title, as Mr. Iles is a great storyteller.
childish pap.......2007-02-12
I enjoy Mr. Iles books very much which is why I bought every one I could find. I am almost finished with this book, having about 100 pages to go and I don't know if I'm going to finish it. It started out with a good premise but has turned into an uninteresting bit of pap. Mr. Iles should leave this genre up to Mr. King and stick to what he knows best.
Don't bother.......2007-02-07
This did not feel like a Greg Isles book to me. He is such a good writer and this book was so far below his usual standards. Stupid.

As constant danger deepens their intimacy, Rachel realizes the key to Trinity lies buried in David's disturbed mind. But Trinity's clock is ticking... Mankind is being held hostage by a machine that cannot be destroyed. Its only hope -- a terrifying chess game between David and the Trinity computer, with the cities of the world as pawns. But what are the rules? How human is the machine? Can one man and woman change the course of history? Man's future hangs in the balance, and the price of failure is extinction.

pretty good.......2007-06-08
i would say the last 100 pages were the best part of the book, however that doesnt mean the rest of the book was bad, it just means the last 100 pages were that good. though i didnt think the ending was great, i didnt think it was horrible either. it was just a different perspective that i thought of.
some parts of the book were predictable, other parts were just far fetched, but i would definately read this book again in the future if just for those last 100 pages.
another thing, i measure books by if when im reading it, i cant wait to find out what happens, this is one of those types of books for me.
Not One of My Favorites.......2007-04-27
I've read eight of Greg Iles' novels, and THE FOOTPRINTS OF GOD is probably the most disappointing one.
I do admire what Iles tried to do here. This book has an enormously ambitious sci-fi plot that tries to combine all sorts of interesting ideas about religion, technology, quantum mechanics, and new age spirtuality. Unfortunately, Iles' reach exceeds his grasp in this case, and the end result is something of a mess. There are just too many ideas and concepts thrown into this book, and they never really gel together into a well-paced, believable story.
Even worse, there is no depth of characterization in this novel. All the characters are cardboard, and the villains are simply cartoons. The romance between the two main characters just kind of happens and there's no real effort to develop it. When I don't really care for the protagonists, it's hard for me to feel truly engaged by a book such as this one. That's a shame, because Iles' is normally very good at creating fascinating characters.
I enjoy most of Iles' work, and heartily recommend novels such as THE QUIET GAME, DEAD SLEEP, BLOOD MEMORY, and 24 HOURS. Iles is a writer of enormous intelligence and range, and I give him credit for taking chances. But my advice is to skip this particular effort.
Who is God?.......2007-04-03
A mixture of religion, science, philosophy, hi-tech, and murder. This is the story of one mans search for ultimate power and another mans quest to stop him. A journey seen through the pursuers eyes from present time to the birth of the universe with possible scenarios for the future.
Written in the 1st person, every chapter moves right along culminating in an ending which although improbable is a distinct possibility.
Not My Favorite Book By Iles.......2007-03-02
I give it 3 stars because while I don't agree with the views of God that are portrayed and the fact that I'm not a big science fiction reader, I still think the overall storyline is interesting. This was my second novel by Iles, and after reading 24 Hours, this was kind of a let down.
Footprints of God Honors Review.......2007-01-29
Footprints of God, I thought was a great book. It kept me on the edge of my seat the entire time, and it was a definite page-turner. The mix between science and religion was really well done, and Greg Iles also made it seem like it could actually happen. Before I started reading the book, I had very low expectation for it because it was another book that was recommended by the school, and most of the time those books are not very interesting. But I will be the first to admit that I was dreadfully wrong in that assumption, because this book was a knockout. My expectations were met and exceeded. I think that one of the greatest strengths of this book was how Greg gave the reader the perspective of what was going on through Tennant's eyes, and the Trinity people's eyes. This aspect of the book kept the reader excited about what was happening next because there was never a dull moment. The biggest weakness of this book was perhaps its tendency to stay on what topic and elaborate on it for too long. Sometimes they would talk about his delusions for example, for pages and pages and occasionally it got boring. But for the most part, I couldn't put down this book. Greg Iles is a great writer, and I would read any piece of literature by him again in a heartbeat. His style of writing really flows and it is not choppy or confusing. He makes a very complex subject, very easy to understand through his clear explanations and the fluidity of his writing. I would recommend this book to anyone that can read, or even if you can't, maybe someone could read it to you. It is definitely worth it! Most of all, I was fascinated by the concepts that Iles was able to come up with. First of all, the idea of a quantum super computer that could crack any code and perform nearly impossible tasks within seconds was fascinating. Second, the idea that the human brain can be used by itself to make decisions and answer questions without needing a body is incredible. Iles had an extremely large imagination and he put all of his crazy thoughts into this book, and it turned out magical. After I read this book, I came away with a positive feeling. I started to think more about God, and what he is capable of. I wondered if we have only seen a little of what God can do, and if he hasn't shown us anything yet. I loved this book, and I think that you will too.

This explosive suspense thriller gets off to a blistering start: the kidnapping of a little boy--in eight breathless pages--that culminates with the child's safe return and the disappearance of the successful kidnappers. That sets the stage for the book's centerpiece, the abduction of little Abby Jennings, daughter of Will, a successful physician, and Karen, a slightly dissatisfied suburban woman who's wondering where the passion in her marriage went. The criminals' modus operandi is established early on. They target the progeny of Mississippi doctors, demand a reasonable (to an affluent M.D.) ransom, release the child after it's paid, and promise the victim parents that if they ever breathe a word of the incident to anyone, their kids will be taken again and killed. The kidnappings are carefully set up, targeted to take place when one parent is out of town at a medical meeting or convention, thus ensuring the cooperation of the other. And the victim is held by a sweet, slightly retarded but humongous and powerful man whose loyalty to his cousin, the mastermind, is unquestioned.
24 Hours is a version of the locked room school of kidnap mysteries and a very good one indeed, especially when Will turns the tables on the kidnapper and takes control of the situation. Abby's diabetic condition (she needs lifesaving injections on a regular basis) notches the suspense up one last turn. It's a well worked-out plot, the pacing is terrific, and the characters likable and attractive. Iles is a master storyteller, and this one has big screen written all over it--with Harrison Ford and Michelle Pfeiffer as the Jennings, if we're lucky. --Jane Adams
Book Description
Greg Iles's novels have been praised for their unusual depth of characterization and complexity of plot, and The Quiet Game was no exception. Reviewers called it "beautifully crafted" (The Providence Sunday Journal), "heartbreakingly honest" (Cleveland Plain Dealer), and simply "a grand thriller with a wonderful Southern seasoning" (The Orange County Register). In 24 Hours, Iles takes readers on a daringly executed roller-coaster ride with enough twists and surprises to last a lifetime.
24 Hours begins with the perfect family. On the perfect night. About to become trapped in the perfect crime. Will Jennings is a successful young doctor in Jackson, Mississippi, with a thriving practice, a beautiful wife, and a five-year-old daughter he loves beyond measure. But Will and his family are being watched by a con man and psychopath who may be a genius. A man who has crafted the unbeatable crime. A man who has never been caught and whose victims have never talked to the police. A man whose life's work strikes at the heart of every family's unspoken fear: the unstoppable kidnapping.
But this man has never met the likes of Will and Karen Jennings.
"Here is a major talent strutting his considerable stuff."-The Denver Post (review of The Quiet Game)

Intense pace.......2007-05-31
This Greg Iles thriller has a quick hook to grab readers, and doesn't release you until the final pages. A simple, yet potent plan by the kidnappers goes awry, and the reader is carried along by the tension. I don't want to spoil any details, but the writing is superb, and concentrates on the actions and emotions, not the reveling in the author's vocabulary that fills the genre occassionally.
A great read, particularly when you have enough time to power through it, as you won't want to put it down.
Good Mississippi Writer.......2007-05-26
I like everything I've read by Greg Iles. This book keeps you on edge.

He is a truly fascinating writer. I found the book interesting, suspenseful and superb writing. Have read many of his books and will continue to do so.

Good idea, poorly executed.......2007-03-14
I've had this unread book on my shelf for a few years. On a recent transpacific flight, I decided to do some rare leisurely reading and brought this book with me.
I had different expectations from this book from the beginning. My copy was called "24 Hours". It was later renamed "Trapped", yet the content is the same. The plot of the book is pretty good, and it is an anticipatory page-turner, so no complaints there. It essentially tracks the life of a pompous narcissistic doctor, his family, and a psychotic nutjob out to steal and terrorize them. Others have done a good job explaining the plot details, so I won't explain it here.
My complaint about this novel is (a) some of the plot holes and (b) the awful dialog between the characters. The plots holes were plausible in some places, and big enough to drive a semi-truck through in others. However, what really threw me off was the embarrassing and terrible dialog between the characters. The doctor's daughter was 5 years old, but many times throughout the story, Iles made her come across as intelligent as a college student--certainly not believable. Other dialog between the good guys and bad guys was absolutely horrendous and numbing. It didn't make the suspenseful parts of the story very realistic.
For these reasons, I give the book a 3-star rating. It loses at least 2 stars for the dialog and plot holes, but overall the story was pretty good; it just wasn't executed too well.
My First Iles Read...........2007-02-24
And I can't wait to read another. This is one of those books that gets hold of you and before you know it, it's over. The ending may be a little far-fetched, but it's also fiction, so who cares. I thought this was a really great read.

Customer Reviews:
Great Book.......2007-01-25
I really enjoyed this book and would have given it a 5 rating, but it was about 100 pages too long. The book gives great insight not only to WW II but it also gives insight into Berlin during the time of the Berlin Wall. There were a few characters that were not necessary to the story and plot line, but Mr. Iles kept my attention throughout the overlong book. It was my 1st novel by Mr. Iles but I will definately try another.
Amazing.......2007-01-05
Its amazing what you're willing to do to pass time in the desert. Reading was never something to interest me. However, after reading Spandau Phoenix I intend to read more of Iles's work.
WWII has always been an interesting subject for me and this book is just brilliant. It educates and entertains at the same time with a believable story. The book explores the conspiracy theory of deputy fuhrer Rudolph Hess of Nazi Germany and his flight to England. It defines a master plan made by the Fuhrer himself to ultimatly control all of Europe with the help of an unlikely allie. All this and more is revealed slowely as you turn pages and get more indepth of a new secret ploy ran by a ghost from the past.
Whith so many good things to say, I did find some things to fault. There tends to be to many characters to keep track of at times, some of which roles could have been eliminated completely. As another reviewer ponited out, at the end when the character in question is faced with the question, "why?". I expected Iles to explore the reasons from the point of view of a Nazi Character. It was a dissapointment. Then again it could be brilliance not to answer "why?". Whatever happened then, whatever reasons there were, maybe its best for the dead to bury the dead.
Complicated and overwrought.......2006-03-25
Having previously read Greg Iles's "Dead Sleep" which I thoroughly enjoyed and found to be both creepy and exciting, I approached this one with a lot of eagerness and interest.
After about page 70, I was starting to get frustrated by the way the novel unfolded, but decided to stay with it. Although I was pleased to finish it, I found the story line to be overly complicated, filled with too many characters and overwrought in its execution. Things were too loose and the story although at times a bit infeasible would be of much higher quality if tightened up a bit, with more focus and less switching from scene to scene.
The subject matter was very interesting and would have been handled in a more capable manner by the likes of Ken Follett, Nelson DeMille or Frederick Forsyth.
not a pleasant read.......2006-01-22
greg iles is one of my favourite author but this book is such a downer..
i tried reading it and fell asleep twice that in the end i gave up even before reaching page 100...
if jeffrey archer was to write this story i'm sure he would;ve done a good job...
the book was too long, it;s confusing and just plain boring..
i was really dissapointed as i am a HUGE fan of his books especially blood memory and sleep no more
wish it could've been better..really do
Must Read!!.......2006-01-01
I cant believe anyone who read this would not consider this book brilliant. Great characters, pace and story. My first Iles book and Im very happy I bought it. I read alot and I consider this among the best 15 books Ive read all year (out of about 60)

This is the second book I've read of Mr. Iles. He never disappoints me. Very well written and accurate for the location.
Not Great, but readable.......2007-06-01
This book is mildly interesting. Its slow in certain areas and I haven't found a character that I really care about. I'll continue reading, but only during the ride to work on the Metro.
Having just read "True Evil" , this book is a big big let down...

Is there space in the overcrowded courtroom for one more writer of sharp, very suspenseful legal thrillers? Yes--if that writer is Greg Iles, who has proven in such varied efforts as Black Cross, Mortal Fear, and Spandau Phoenix that he knows how to squeeze the last drop of suspense out of all sorts of situations.
Iles immediately makes us feel both sympathy and empathy for his glossy hero, Penn Cage--a former ace Texas prosecutor turned suspense novelist whose sales are up there in the John Grisham Himalayan range.
Trying to cope with the recent death of his wife, Cage takes his 5-year-old daughter to Florida's Disney World, where the child sadly sees visions of her mother everywhere in the fantasy-filled environment. Wouldn't a trip to his parents' stately home in Natchez be more soothing for all concerned? Wrong, as it turns out--and before Cage can catch his breath, he's deeply involved in several dangerous matters. His father, a dedicated doctor, is being blackmailed for a past mistake in judgment, and a powerful judge (who just happens to be the father of Penn's high school sweetheart) has a nasty personal agenda of his own. Then there's the unsolved 1968 murder case of a black man, which Cage insists on reopening with the help of an attractive, ambitious newspaper publisher.
Iles does for Natchez what John Berendt did for Savannah in Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil, creating a gothic Southern landscape where elegance and depravity walk hand in hand. --Dick Adler

When recently widowed Penn Cage leaves Houston with his young daughter and returns to his hometown seeking peace, he finds something very different. Natchez, Mississippi, is the jewel of the antebellum South, a city of old secrets and older money. Upon learning that his father is being blackmailed, Penn finds himself reopening the most highly charged murder case in the town's history, searching for the evidence that could bring down the judge who nearly destroyed his father years ago. As the town closes ranks against him, Penn is joined by Caitlin Masters, a young newspaper publisher, on a deadly quest to find answers to one of the darkest chapters of American history, a quest that pits them against the FBI, a band of brothers still fiercely guarding the tainted legacy of J. Edgar Hoover. But Penn's most dangerous journey must be made alone--into the abiding mystery of his own past, into the mind and heart of a woman he lost twenty years ago, and who still has the power to save or destroy him.
Customer Reviews:
Went in to work bleary eyed on a Monday.......2007-05-08
Started reading on a Sunday morning, and could not stop turning pages till I was done 3AM Monday morning. I don't think I got much done at work that Monday morning. This was my first Iles novel, and I think this is also his best one so far, with Dead Sleep a close second, followed by Black Cross. That's my personal opinion. I won't get into a detailed book review here, since that's been done by 100s of other fans. In my opinion, Iles succeeds by writing incredibly taut stories that leave you wanting more. Putting down the book before it's finished is hard.
One of Iles' Best.......2007-04-27
I recently found Iles and can't put them down. The Quiet Game is one my favorites so far. Very fast paced, nicely developed characters. Puts Grisham to shame.
Penn Cage, Protagonist Extraordinaire.......2007-03-26
The mystery at the heart of this thriller is the 1968 murder of a black man, Del Payton, in Natchez, Mississippi. Penn Cage, former attorney and now best selling author, inadvertently brings this case to the attention of an attractive newspaper publisher, Caitlin Masters. The resulting uproar in the town leads Penn and Caitlin to further investigate the murder. Various characters emerge to either help solve the case or keep it buried. The town is divided mostly along racial lines, although there are exceptions. Those who were in power 30 years ago are still in town and adamantly against anything being done. Most of the cops who investigated the killing are still alive and so are the FBI agents who were brought in. The action is fast-paced and involves side trips to Texas and Colorado. Greg Iles does a remarkable job showing different sides of Penn, including as a devoted father, widow, and son. A side story that has some implication for the overall plot involves Penn and his father. A complication to the emerging romance between Penn and Caitlin is the presence of his former lover, Livy Marston, and unresolved issues between them. This book is billed as a legal thriller, but very little action takes place in the courtroom.
I have a few quibbles with Iles about the likeliness of some escapes and the timing of some revealed evidence, however, it is overall, an excellent book. It kept me up past 10 pm and it is a rare book that does that these days. I have never been to Natchez, but the descriptive power of Iles allows me to almost think I have. There is a second book with Penn Cage as protagonist (Turning Angel) and two more set in Natchez (Blood Memory, True Evil).
Really liked this one....Iles is awesome...........2007-03-11
My 5th Greg Iles novel, and I was not disappointed. Fast paced and Fun.
One Of The Best.......2007-02-17
If you are looking for light thriller reading, don't read Greg Iles. If you are looking for stylish, well-written prose with characters so real, at the end of the book you feel like you know them, then read Greg Iles. I am a fan of thriller books. Right now, Greg Iles and Harlan Coben are my favorite authors. The Quiet Game is detailed without getting boring, exciting from beginning to end. There are few books I read where I can actually see scenes in my head as if I am watching a movie. Such is the writing of Greg Iles. Nothing is simple, but you never get lost as you can reading some other authors. The depth and quality of his writing stays consistent from book to book - unusual for any author. Read The Quiet Game if you have high standards for quality of writing and love a good thriller. Be prepared, though, for a marathon. His books are never short, but always satisfying.

Splendid Piece of Entertainment.......2007-05-02
I've read almost all of Greg Iles' novels, and I think BLACK CROSS is perhaps the best one, on par with THE QUIET GAME. I'm normally not a fan of military thrillers, but this World War II novel kept me on the edge of my seat for over 600 pages.
Iles does everything right here. He creates a fascinating, multi-layered plot involving a Nazi plan to develop sarin gas. All the major characters are heroic, interesting and complex. Nearly every scene in BLACK CROSS is intense and exciting. This is a hugely enjoyable adventure novel.
It's a shame that Iles hasn't written more historical thrillers of this nature (BLACK CROSS was his last one). His more recent novels are decent, but don't measure up to the quality of his first five books. So if you've never read Iles before, I suggest starting with this one. Other good choices include THE QUIET GAME, MORTAL FEAR, and DEAD SLEEP.
Incredible.......2007-03-20
Black Cross is the third book I've read by Greg Iles. The range of topics he uses in his novels is impressive. Black Cross is one of those stories that you just don't want to end. The way he describes the action makes you feel as if you are right there with McConnell and Stern. Definitely a must read - this book would make a great movie.
Engrossing.......2007-02-04
I'm not going to go into detail about the book, but I will say that the characters in this novel are well developed. Greg Iles definitely engrosses the reader. I didn't want this novel to end. I took my time with it, not because it was boring, but because I wanted it to last. This is the first Greg Iles book I have read. I plan on reading his other works. I recommend this to anyone who loves a historical fiction thriller!!
A page turner.......2006-03-29
A very compelling read. My wife and I both read it and loved it. We picked up another novel by Mr. Iles and are looking forward to it.
It is definetely worth your time.
Excellent.......2006-03-24
This is the first book I've read by Iles, and it was definitely an excellent place to start.
While the book seemed to drag a little at parts, I still never lost interest; the last quarter of the book is just plain incredible. Highly recommended.
