A Good Resource For Guitarists.......2006-10-17

I wish that I could have seen just what songs this book had before I bought it. While the songs range from the 60's to the 80's in style, most of the songs aren't my favorite songs although I do like Walk Don't Run (the Ventures), Sunshine of Your Love (Cream), and Won't Be Fooled Again (the Who). The others I could live without.

However, over all this is a very good book to have around for intermediate to advanced guitar players. If you are a beginner I wouldn't quite recommend this book as most of the music is fairly advanced. This shouldn't come as a surprise as the music was written by accomplished rock musicians and played by accomplished rock musicians. The book tries to help by providing notes at the beginning of the book about many of the songs on the techniques involved and how these songs should be played but still, this is not a book for rank amateurs unless someone with more experience is around to help answer a few questions.

But given the short supply of rock music with both standard music notation and tablature, this book is a good resource for a few good songs to learn such as Hit Me With Your Best Shot, I want You To Want Me, Message In A Bottle, The Boys Are Back In Town, Shattered, Born To Be Wild, and others. Also, what would really help this book is a CD of the songs like those found in the Guitar For Dummies and Rock Guitar For Dummies books, but sadly, I guess for contractual reasons, no CD of the songs is offered here although there could be cover versions but we don't even get those. So for lack of a CD and the limited number of hot rock songs, I give this book only four stars.

Herriges gives you detailed descriptions on how to play 35 rock classics, from Cheap Trick to Van Halen. Symbols, technical help, notation definitions, a guitar notation legend, a chord chart, and TAB for every song! "Proud Mary," "Smoke on the Water," "Brown Eyed Girl," and "Hey, Joe." A previous knowledge of music notation and tab is helpful, but the references in the back will clear up any confusion.

So funny I thought I would die!!.......2004-07-31

Like the other reviewers, I found this book to be so clever and funny that I couldn't help but laugh out loud. On a recent trip to Atlanta, the people on the plane with me must have thought I was crazy. As a music fan and a mystery fan, I found the plot to be totally satisfying. I'm buying this book for all my friends for the holidays.

His best yet.......2002-04-10

Of his three sovels so far, The Winter Dance Party is Herriges' best yet. I read it on a plane trip to California and could not keep from laughing out loud. The character Rudy Keen is as original a post-modern protagonist as your likely to meet, and his method of rewriting rock history by using actual events takes storytelling to a higher level. Definitely recommended.

Non-stop rock 'n roll nostalgia! A unique twist on events of the rock 'n roll era that kept me laughing!! A must read! Herriges creates an aura of intrigue that makes you wonder what Rudy will discover next! Outrageous yet...truth is stranger than fiction...Rudy uncovers yet another conspiracy of an age wrought with conspiracy...who would have thought...Rudy did! He bounds ahead in search of the truth...does he find it? Read it and find out!

i transfered out of harper college awhile back. it is there where i heard a lot about greg herriges. i finally got around to reading the local fiction writer in that area and was dissapointed: lack-luster humor, cliche sentimentality. i heard he likes salinger a lot, and it definity shows that he listened to his creative teacher when he said "copy the greats", but come-on, if i wanted to read salinger at his utmost worst i would pick up a few stories from the uncollected 22. This is the only book that i have read by herriges, i just hope, if i have the courage to get around to it, reading other books by this author will be more beneficial

Great book.......2002-03-23

I must say, I first read this book when I ws maybe 10 or 11, and haven't read it again in several years. But I've read this book at least three times and I love it. The writing, though, is very much geared toward younger people. The main character is a 17 year old growing up in the city with his divorced mother. It centers on his very paranoid perception of the city, and he continues to have problems in school. The characters in the book are interesting and differnt- from guidance counselors, to his friends, and his mother. The main character has a sarcastic and ironic sense of humor that I like.

This book is as much about the journey as it is about the author's fascination with and devotion to J. D. Salinger. It centers around a young teacher, full of passion for the writer who inspired him at an early age as well as for the lovely lady who accompanies him on his trek to meet with the reclusive J.D. The book is riveting as I got swept up in his escapades and the events which took place on this journey. I read the book in one day, I simply couldn't put it down! Funny, introspective and very entertaining. Mr. Herriges' finest piece to date. A must read!!
