Mighty Stories, Dangerous Rituals: Weaving Together the Human and the Divine

Book Description
Bringing together two of our greatest sources of meaning and transformationThis book marries two partners that are made for each other. The result, as in all good unions, is mutual enrichment and deeper life.
--Jack Shea, author of Stories of God
Now available in paperback, this moving and enlightening book presents us with a compelling vision of what can happen when we take the opportunity to connect stories and rituals--a vision of individuals and communities transformed through a deeper sense of connection to our loved ones, our communities, and God. Herbert Anderson and Edward Foley reveal how when stories and rituals work together, they have the potential to be both mighty and dangerous--mighty in their ability to lift us up and help us make these connections beyond ourselves and dangerous in challenging us to learn to live with complexity and contradiction.
They show how much more meaningful a baptism, wedding, or funeral can be when liturgy is made to include and recognize the personal stories of those involved. Suddenly, these familiar life-cycle rituals are infused with new life as their participants become connected in a narrative web linking past and present, human and divine. Newly created rituals can also help us connect our stories to the divine story, giving meaning to what we experience and bringing us closer to God.
Ministers, worship leaders, and pastoral caregivers can use this approach to storytelling and ritual to find ways to bring together worship and pastoral care, diminishing fragmentation and fostering coherence in their religious communities.

Visions of Utopia (New York Public Library Lectures in Humanities)
Edward Rothstein , Herbert Muschamp , and Martin E. Marty Manufacturer: Oxford University Press, USA ProductGroup: Book Binding: Paperback Similar Items:
ASIN: 0195171616 |
Book Description
From the sex-free paradise of the Shakers to the worker's paradise of Marx, utopian ideas seem to have two things in common--they all are wonderfully plausible at the start and they all end up as disasters. In Visions of Utopia, three leading cultural critics--Edward Rothstein, Martin Marty, and Herbert Muschamp--look at the history of utopian thinking, exploring why they fail and why they are still worth pursuing. Edward Rothstein, New York Times cultural critic, contends that every utopia is really a dystopia--a disaster in the making--one that overlooks the nature of humanity and the impossibilities of paradise. He traces the ideal in politics and technology and suggests that only in art--and especially in music--does the desire for utopia find satisfaction. Martin Marty examines several models of utopia--from Thomas More's to a 1960s experimental city that he helped to plan--to show that, even though utopias can never be realized, we should not be too quick to condemn them. They can express dimensions of the human spirit that might otherwise be stifled and can plant ideas that may germinate in more realistic and practical soil. And Herbert Muschamp, the New York Times architectural critic, looks at Utopianism as exemplified in two different ways: the Buddhist tradition and the work of visionary Viennese architect Adolph Loos. Utopian thinking embodies humanity's noblest impulses, yet it can lead to horrors such as Nazi Germany and the Soviet Regime. In Visions of Utopia, these leading thinkers offer an intriguing look at the paradoxes of paradise.

Product Description
This is a new story of South Dakota's past--a fresh telling of South Dakota's always interesting, often colorful, and yet sometimes painful history. The first full-scale interpretation of the state's history in more than forty years. A New South Dakota History emphasizes the geographic and cultural diversity of the nation's fortieth state. Acknowledging rather than igonoring the problems of the past, this history offers new and varied perspectives on the state and, in so doing, provides a foundation for a better understanding of the issues facing South Dakota now and in the near future. This history also celebrates the achievements of the state in such areas as agriculture, urbanization, communications, tourism, and the arts. Featuring essays by nationally recognized authors as well as full-length chapters by noted scholars, this 650-page history is intended for general readers, college students, and teachers of South Dakota history. The text is illustrated with over 100 photographs and includes chapter chronologies, notes, a selective readings list, and an index. Beginning with an essay on Sioux understanding of the land, this history moves to chapters on geography, early Native peoples, the fur trade and exploration, Missouri River culture, Native Americans in Dakota Territory, Yankee and European immigration, cities and towns, territorial and statehood politics, farming and ranching, the Black Hills religious institutions, the literary, visual, and performing arts, health care, communication technologies, transportation and tourism, modern tribes, and the challenges and opportunities facing South Dakota in the twenty-first century. Along the way are essays on the African American experience, small towns, women writers, and the traditional Sioux family today. This is the story of a new South Dakota.Customer Reviews:
