Excellent book for college drafting course........2000-06-23

This is an excellent college level text.I particularly like the detailed "real world" drafting problems for the students. Also it has a very good apppendix. It is comprehensive enough that we use it in three different courses here at Vincennes University.

I have had this book in my drafting library for some time now. I am always using it and recommending it. The book is laid out so that you can go from beginning drafting up through advanced. It not only says what the standards are, but walks you through drafting technology so that you understand why they are like they are. I believe that anyone that is going to be doing drafting should have this in their library.

Very good book. It tackles all the main aspects of modern Fatigue Analysis. The atentive reader, following the text with a paper and pencil besdies, will extract valuable ideas for procedures. I am looking forward for books written in the same style.

Great overview with engineering data!.......2003-05-06

If there is a single book on *just* metal fatigue for your shelf, this is it. The treatment of material is rigorous without being too terse or long-winded. There's an enjoyable amount of real-world experience mixed in with the text: bits of highly relevant distilled information. Plus, there is data in the appendix that is difficult to find elsewhere (aluminum, etc).

An Overview Sort of Text.......2003-02-08

There are a number of texts in this field. This one is by authors whose professional reputations are top notch. However, this book's strengths lie in their qualitative approach. It is a very good book for a short course, and introduction or overview, but for a graduate text I feel it falls short in that it is lacking in mathematics and too qualitative. That said, the illustrations of specific
types of fatigue are terrific. The thought process they use to think through a fatigue problem is very appropriate and a great approach to most problems. If you do forensics of fatigue
problems you want to create for yourself a catalog of failure modes photos and this shows you how to start. With great examples of a number of different types of failures.

Alternative texts for a more quantitative approach that I would
recommend, are Bannantine's and Comer's books for undergraduate
engineering students, or Norman Dowling's book for graduate students.

Still, I own the book and am glad I do. So I give it 3.5 stars.

Stories with a Twist.......2006-11-15

My father recently sent me some of his books after my parents moved to a smaller home in Oregon. Included in the mostly newer books were a few old ones from his college days. Among them was the original 1945 version of "Best Stories of O. Henry". Anyone familiar with American Literature knows of William Sydney Porter, better known as O. Henry. He is famous for his short stories that lead you down a path which swerves, at the end, in a direction you hadn't anticipated. Along the way are many colorful characters out of American life around the Turn of the Century (That's the Turn of the Century BEFORE this latest one). Not only are his characters a worthwhile part of every story, his settings often give another interesting view of life 100 years ago. All this evolves in stories that often are no more than 4-5 pages in length. These snapshots almost always conclude with an ironic and/or surprise ending. His best known story, which is the opening selection in this collection, is "The Gift of the Magi". The other story of his that I always recalled, "The Ransom of Red Chief", is also in this book. It's one of the handful of longer stories and runs a whole 12 pages. Among my favorites "discoveries" in this collection are "The Cop and the Anthem", "A Blackjack Bargainer", "Squaring the Circle", "The Pendulum", "The Last Leaf", and "The Count and the Wedding Guest". There are 30 other stories in addition to the ones I've cited. Some went a bit long which sounds strange to say about a short story. However, one gets used to the rhythim of O. Henry and certain stories take you out of that rhythim. Some stories may not conclude in as surprising a manner as others but they are still worth a look at life and customs a century ago.

According to the Editorial Review shown above, O. Henry wrote over 600 stories in his life. I'm not interested in reading that much of his work. However, I'm glad I read these 38.

A wonderfully funny group of stories.......2006-03-22

I couldn't find the edition that I read, so will review here. I read O'Henry's "heart of the West", his group of stories about Texas. O. Henry (or William Porter) actually lived in Texas just before the turn of the century, and these stories therefore reflect what life was actually like for the rough and ready cowboys and their women. His characters are real, and his stories are true little gems. O. Henry's love for this place (Texas) at this time comes through over and over. O. Henry wrote for the common people, and because of that they loved him. They could see themselves in each one of these stories. These stories are all wonderful, but my personal favourite was "The Handbook of Hymen". It is so wryly funny, that I laugh about it still when I think of Sanderson Pratt and his little book of facts and how that book helped him successfully court a rich widow lady. Idaho Green's little book of poetry written by "Homer K.M." did not stand him in good stead with the good widow lady. Hilarious!

This is a very good collection of my favorite short story author.

It's hard to imagine anyone who hasn't read and loved O. Henry, but if for some reason you have discovered this work yet, this collection is a great place to begin.

O. Henry's short stories are tiny masterpieces. Each story takes literally only minutes to read (they're an average 6 - 12 pages long), but they are brilliant in plot and character development, each with an unexpected twist of some sort at the end, and each different from the other.

Where do new circuit ideas come from? Aloha kakou,
Outstanding collaborative effort by two very important Native Hawaiian voices. This wonderful portrait details a man`s life spent well--dealing with the challenges and trials of surviving Hansen`s disease in Kalaupapa, Moloka`i. Not an in depth about Hansen`s or Kalaupapa, this is Henry`s story, his life, loves, talents and legacy. Henry tells his story, through Sally-Jo`s sensitive handling, with the self effacing, off hand manner of a true local Bruddah. Typical of Hawaiians of his generation, he can do a handful of difficult things really well. This celebration of a life lived with purpose also shows what can result from a life lived purposefully with Aloha. I strongly recommend this book.

This is an amazing story. It is Henry's story. Henry Nalielua, diagnosed with Hansen's disease at the age of ten, was branded leprous. "No Footprints in the Sand" is an important memoir. It tells of the journey that took Henry from a sugar plantation community on the Island of Hawaii to Kalaupapa, a remote settlement on the Hawaiian island of Molokai.

Nalaielua's story is inspiring. Even in exile, with lifelong medical and physical challenges and isolation from his family, he faced life with hope, perseverance, courage, and humor. Henry learned to draw and paint. He became an artist. Henry loved music and mastered the ukulele and upright bass. He became a musician. Henry's mind was sharp. He was determined and quick-to-learn. He became an historian. Henry has also served on numerous public agency advisory boards. When the facility at Kalaupapa was named a National Historic Park, Henry became a guide for park visitors. He still resides at Kalaupapa

Co-author Sally-Jo Bowman worked determinedly over a period of years to help bring Henry's story to publication. She first met Henry in 1995, when he helped her with on-site research at Kaluapapa for several magazine articles about the Hansen's disease colony.

Henry's story is unforgettable. It is told with intimacy and openness. "No Footprints in the Sand" is a heartwarming memoir that will inspire anyone facing adversity, long term illness, or needing encouragement. This was a very positive reading experience.

I've now given away so many copies of No Footprints that I should have bought a dozen or twenty at wholesale. Henry's is an amazing story of a kolohe kanaka - naughty Hawaiian - who had the misfortune to contract a dreaded disease in 1936. Sally-Jo Bowman's input makes it a fascinating read. Sounds just like Henry sat down and wrote it all by himself, but we know it doesn't work that way. I chuckled at Henry's can-do attitude. Man after my own heart. I'm glad the book includes all his Casanova events. What a guy, a real renaissance kanaka kane - Hawaiian man. Great title!

A powerful reading experience.......2007-01-19

Henry's authentic Hawaiian sensibility and voice walked all the way through his memoir into my heart. This book is the footprint denied him by Hansen's disease and the sands of Kalaupapa. The history was previously unknown to me, so I was shocked at times and outraged on his behalf, but I always trusted his courage, humor, and rebellious resourcefulness. I couldn't wait to see which way Henry would spin in order to stick the next landing. He's a man I'm proud to have met, if only in print. A bit of Henry goes with me now to see how many ways I, too, can accept or face down obstacles.

This book is a winner just as is Mr. Lee. I have met him and his courses are so well put that one wants to extend the learning periods.

The Gospel According to St. Henry.......2007-01-17

"True Crime" is a genre that is clearly flourishing, and in "Cracking More Cases" famed forensic scientist Dr. Lee has again dug deep down to the smallest of fibers, atoms, and blood spatters as he presents his view of the Skakel/Moxley case, JonBenet Ramsey, and "many more." There is the first problem: to me, THREE other crimes does not qualify as "many," but perhaps I quibble. While the crimes and the evidentiary trails are fascinating, to be sure, it is hard to escape Dr. Lee's ego which towers like an Alp over this book. The peak is reached on Page 111: "During my testimony, I referred to 'indirect forensic evidence,' a term that Mickey Sherman pointedly decided not to challenge, somewhat sarcastically asking, in effect, 'Who would want to take on so well known a figure as Dr. Lee?'" Now there is a legend being created in someone else's mind! Actually, there is little new in the book, other than Dr. Lee's self love. A check of the notes will reveal just how much he draws upon the work of others.

Sophisticated information presented in friendly language. .......2006-09-11

Fantastic! On a personal note, this is the only book of its kind that I will ever need for my work as a novelist. I'm not qualified to pass judgment on Dr. Lee's abilities but it's clear that he is premier in his field and this work will stand the test of time and will surely be updated with new editions as necessary.

My review serves two purposes:

First; this is an essential addition for any writer's library. If one of your characters should commit a crime that might require forensic science, you had better know what you are writing about.

Second, some of these reviews are hilarious! Are the Hardy Boys for real? I guess we'll turn [..] into a courtroom for amateur sleuths. A couple of morons with magnifying glasses have challenged Henry Lee to a duel!

If you're a TOP 50 REVIEWER and you have decided you know more about a murder Case than Dr. Henry Lee, I suggest that you re-evaluate yourself and stop speed-reading so that you can absorb and understand what the author is trying to say.

The Doc spotlights the Ramseys..........2006-09-11

Ditto to Dennis Littrell's eloquent and well-informed review, by the way. This is a solid and varied sequel indeed, and the Doc looks very cool on the cover, but I just want to focus on the Ramsey case above all.

While the excellent Dr. Lee does not flat out accuse the Ramseys of involuntary manslaughter and a pitiful cover-up, his use of probability terminology speaks for itself.

To clarify things, the critical points to grasp about the Ramsey case include the following...

There is no conclusive evidence - of any kind - that there was ever an intruder. All of the 'possible clues' touted by pro-Ramsey people have long ago been debunked.

The tainted, partial DNA sample that has been referred to repeatedly, could have come from any number of sources, including the clothing manufacturer/packer, and there is absolutely no evidence whatosever that it came from an intruder.

The sample is a limited 10-loci/marker sample and could never be enough to convict in isolation (you need 13 loci or sequencing markers), even if an idiot like John Mark Karr had been telling the truth. It is of some limited use in eliminating suspects, i.e. if any of their 10 corresponding markers don't align with the sample, they can be excluded.

The DNA is a red herring, anyway, especially as used by the Ramseys' belligerent lawyer Lin Wood. For him to drone on that the Ramseys were cleared by comparison to the case DNA is utterly meaningless on two counts. Firstly, because there is NO evidence that the DNA was that of a killer/intruder; secondly, because, as with any parent/child relationship, the Ramseys' DNA could have quite legitimately been all over JonBenet. Nothing short of finding John's semen in her mouth, vagina or anus could have been considered truly compromising.

As Dr. Lee suggests, given the total lack of evidence to support the intruder theory, the likelihood is that JonBenet was killed by accident and the parents panicked and created a woefully illogical and transparent cover-up.

No intruder could have had such prolonged and close physical contact with the child and not left siginicant DNA behind. To do that, he would have to have been wearing a space suit.

Same-old song and dance from Lee.......2006-06-08

A book that I couldn't finish--it was just as bad as his first book, and I just wonder when he will, if ever, let go of the O.J. Simpson case. I'm tired of reading about it, and the other cases are rehashes of previously known stories, with no new facts. Perhaps someone not familiar with these cases will like it, but to those of us who read true crime books all of the time (at least this reader!), it's the same-old, same-old...

Everything you've ever wanted to read by O. Henry. Good gift, good read.

Awful writing style.......2006-05-19

I started reading this book after I had just finished reading ALL of the Sherlock Holmes stories (for the first time), and quite simply, it grated on my nerves. The writing style does not come close to that of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle's, who's writing is well thought out and presented. I once read somewhere that O. Henry never edited his stories, and it is VERY noticeable. It is really strange to have an explanation of why he uses a certain word over another as part of the text, albeit paranthetically. I've since moved on to Poe, whose short stories are pretty good. On the plus side, the irony is pretty good.

I have a smile on my face every time I finish reading a story from this book. Each story tickles my fancy ... I was sold on this volume by an amazon.com reviewer -- whose enthusiasm for O. Henry was contagious. O. Henry was one of my favorite story tellers in the past ... I am pleased to have discovered this book. It is filled with delightful and enlightening short stories about the foibles of humanity ... many are heart-warming and sensitive, many are humorous, some are serious. He has mastered the art of the "surprise" ending for which he is famous!

"The Gift of the Magi", "Brickdust Row", and "The Furnished Room", bring back fond memories of growing up. I remember events and characters from these stories. Each story is poignant, emotionally satisfying, and complete. O. Henry possesses an uncanny ability to hook the readers attention in the first paragraph and then keep the reader hanging on every word, anticipating what happens next ... O. Henry is the master of creating a twist to the ending ... he often throws the reader an unexpected curve. He shows us life is *not* always what it seems.

In this volume, O. Henry writes about people, human reactions, culture, society, class structure and how to earn a buck, through a bit of conniving and deceit. I thoroughly enjoyed the stories which took place out West and in Central America ... they were fresh, original and well-crafted. His technical expertise as a writer, the use of words to create an impression and set up a plot are sheer genius. They demonstrate the reason for his stories are popular throughout the world. One of my favorites is the story titled, "The Ethics of Pigs". Here is a sample of O. Henry's famous word-play: "Jeff is in the line of unillegal graft. He is not to be dreaded by widows and orphans; he is a reducer of surplusage. His favorite disguise is that of the target-bird at which the spend-thrift or the rockless investor may shy a few inconsequential dollars." [p. 147, A Signet Classic] This book contains stories with a wide range of themes, plots, and locales. It will appeal to a large audience of readers from middle school age on up. Expect the Best; You'll Get It.......2003-11-19

The thing I always find remarkable about reading O. Henry is that the "surprise" or "twist" at the end of so many of his stories arrive so naturally. You never feel manipulated. They are so simple and logical, like the narrator's tone. It's little wonder that so many consider O. Henry to be one of the founders of the modern short story. And that an annual short story award is given out in his name.

His stories, like Horatio Alger's, give us a unique first-hand account of what New York and other cities were like at the turn of the last century. And for that it is a valuable collection as well.

The great standards are in this collection, like "The Gift of the Magi" and "A Retrieved Reformation". But it's the lesser known, the hidden gems, that make this collection so remarkable. People make much of the fact that so many of these tales were written while O. Henry was in prison for various minor offences and that the stories provided him with bail money. The fact is that the man had a lucid view of human nature and the funny way life infringes upon it. He could have--and did--write so many of these tales outside of the jail cell.

Great for O Henry fans; unnecessary for a first O Henry book.......2003-05-25

O Henry is a sort of "must know." Without the knowledge of O Henry's writing style, and because it's been so influential, you miss out on the transformation of the short-story form since. It's almost a historical mandate for an understanding of the short story from the turn on the centrury onward.

That said, when do you choose to read him and which book? If you haven't read O Henry, O Do. But, I don't think that as many stories that are in this collection are necessary. Once you see what he does, you've got it. Once you see it, you can also then see what's happened since, and along the way - short stories of the 20s, 40s, 50s, etc., and to the present.

Read a few O Henry stories if you've got an interest in reading short stories. If you're short of money or time, you don't need quite as many as are in this book. Unless you are highly interested in O Henry, my sense is you won't read every story in this book anyway.

Buy this book if you can't get enough of him and have that burning desire to see the ones left out of earlier anthologies. Otherwise, pick up any O Henry book - they've got the "important" ones and that's all you need. This book, so many stories, is too repetitious after awhile; once you've read a few, you know how from the first paragraph how every story will end. This book is for fans only.

Interesting little bio at the front, though.
