Don Camillo's toughest challenge: the younger generation!.......1998-01-16
Even all his years of battling--first against the
Fascists, then against the local Communists--
have left the big Italian priest from the Po
Valley unprepared for a visit from his
wayward niece, Flora. To make matters worse, the
Curia has sent over a young priest to help bring
Vatican II to Don Camillo's parish! Meanwhile,
old foe Peppone faces challenges from
both new political rivals and his biker son,
"Venom."
Giovanni Guareschi's sixth "Don Camillo" book,
published shortly after his death in 1968,
is as charming as ever, though the new ideas
which have invaded the Little World give a
slightly different feel to this last entry in the
series.

Highly recommended.......2006-02-17
These short stories are absolutely charming. They're not cute, sweet, or preachy in the slightest, and although they deal with a Christian priest, I really don't think anybody of any faith could read these short stories and not enjoy them. I myself am not Christian but I love the Don Camillo stories.
They're short stories about a priest in Italy (Don Camillo) around mid-century, when communism is just gaining a foothold in the country. Don Camillo is a big, strong man with a hot temper despite being a priest, and he strongly disagrees with communism. The leader of the local communist party and Mayor of the town is an equally strong and hot-tempered atheist called Peppone who believes Christianity and Communism are incompatible. The two constantly fight and resort to all sorts of tricks and schemes to best the other -- Don Camillo to convince Peppone to respect god and the church, Peppone to convince Don Camillo that Communism is the way of the future and that Christianity is standing in the way of progress. Don Camillo often treads a very fine line between defending the church and behaving inappropriately as a priest, and occasionally gets a reprimand from god for going too far, as well as whatever Peppone may have dealt him.
The stories are great satire on the follies of people in general, and very funny. I don't believe in god, but if I ever did discover I am wrong and there is a god, I would like him to be Don Camillo's god. The overall message is not anything preachy, but simply the basic goodness of people and the importance of tolerance and forgiveness.
Nice.......2001-05-14
I grew up with this book- it's children's fiction at its best- witty and readable at the ripe old age of 23. Adults may even enjoy it more than kids, but it presents an even-handed and sympathetic portrait of "the little world"- the Po valley in Italy. It's unfortunate that it's not read more often. i'm told that Guareschi was very well loved by a generation of European children, regardless of nationality. If in doubt, just get it!
Enchanting, outrageous, and scathingly witty!.......2000-07-06
Don Camillo and his Flock, the second in the series of Guareschi's fabulous tales of Don Camillo, a hot-tempered parish priest, and the communist Mayor Peppone, his equally hard-headed enemy. The two loathe each other, and often resort to blackmail and schoolboy tricks in order to gain an advantage over the other. The stories are outrageously funny: there's the tale of Rhadames, the choirboy who can't sing. And the story of Smilzo, "a young gentleman who decides to put the doctrine of free love into practice." And finally, the gilded angel on top of the church that Don Camillo can't quite fathom. At the end of it all, it's Don Camillo and Peppone who must temporarily sort out their differences to bring order to the day. A fine rainy day, any day read, over and over again, this book is truly one of the finest examples of satire, with, and literary magic ever to weave its spell on me.

The book is great--a long-time favorite of mine. Funny and touching at the same time.
The only drawback to my book: it was the English translation; not the American one.

Don Camillo's Little World is Magical.......2004-01-15
I fell in love with both the priest Don Camillo and his faithful adversary, Peppone the Communist mayor, when I was only ten, and since then have read all of the books, several times. After my experiences of being in the USAF in Taiwan in the 1970s, and now a permanent resident in mainland China's Fujian Province, I can appreciate the kinds of clashes that can occur between Communists and Christians--serious, but at times quite humorous also. I appreciate the zany humor but most of all the down to earth warm portrayels of both Don Camillo and Peppone. The author shows good and bad sides of both, and Don Camillo's conversations with Christ, who speaks to him from the crucifix above the altar, are priceless. After a few stories, one realizes that neither Don Camillo nor Peppone are the good guy or the bad guy, but simple ordinary people--and though enemies, they each sometimes go out of their way to help the other (though secretly, to save face). The cast of supporting characters, like skinny Smilzo, is also a delight.
The line drawings of the angel Don Camillo and the devil Peppone are, of course, priceless. Simple and to the point, they are the icing on the Don Camillo cake, and probably the reason why I draw cartoons on everything from greeting cards to my books on China--Amoy Magic, Fujian Adventure, Mystic Quanzhou, deng deng (which is Chinese for "etcetera"). I highly recommend not only Little World but all of the Don Camillo books in print.
What a Find!!.......2002-07-12
I was at a summer fair recently and browsing on the book stall when I found a very old copy of the Little World of Don Camillo dating from 1953. I had no idea what it was at the time as I'd never heard of it but i was intrigued by the blurb. this book is HILARIOUS! I kept laughing out loud and getting very strange looks! but it was worth it! I am now determined to find the rest of the books and read them although I am aware that they may cost me slightly more that my 25p find at the Fete! It's a brilliant book that transports you into another world with ease and lets you meet characters that you can believe in and love. A very well spent 25 pence!
A Masterpiece of Humor and Faith.......2002-03-13
Having first entered Don Camillo's little world at 10, I have returned innumerable times over the decades, and frequently given directions to friends, too. This little work is a masterpiece. There is more wisdom, faith, hope, and love, to be found in its pages than in many far more "serious" works of fiction. All of that is accomplished in a deceptively simple gem of literary style. Like any great work of fiction, it captivates the heart as well as the mind. It is impossible to spend time in this little world and not come away with a smile on one's face and hope in one's heart. The Little World of Don Camillo is ideal reading for anyone, of any age or condition, anywhere.
Ups and downs.......2001-12-26
Being a collection of humorous short stories, this volume has ups and downs - some stories being well-written and funny, others less so. Guareschi's talent is undeniable; he opens this book by writing, "My life began on the 1st of May, 1908, and between one thing and another, it still goes on." This is written humor at its best.
I think partially the fault for disliking a few of the stories lies in the way I've read them - I've read too many too fast; that's like eating too much chocolate. Perhaps a more paced reader will really enjoy this book and be able to give it a 5-star rating.

A blast from the past.......2003-12-17
I read this book when I was only thirteen, which wasn't old enough to grasp all of the subtleties in Guareschi's political and cultural satire and humor, but I did get some of it, despite my basically still being a kid. The book pokes fun at both Italian and Soviet politics through the antics of the irrepressible Comrade Camillo, a mischievous priest who has his own agenda in accepting the invitation to visit the Soviet Union. Guareschi wrote a number of other successful books, including a series of Don Camillo books, but I don't know how many of them were translated into English. If there were, I never saw any of them, but I enjoyed this one, and it now stands as a window into another era of Cold War politics that is rapidly receding in the wake of the Berlin Wall's coming down and now the events of of 9/11.
Don Camillo will pep you up to kick any rascals in humour.......1998-08-25
My home library contains some fabulous titles from Signor Guareschi. Over the years my wife and my brother and I have started guarding them with our lives. Particularly the above title. What a sublime humour and a bygone era. I went to Italy to see Palmar and the river Po. Made lot of Italian friends on that trip. Read Guareschi. Particularly the House that Nino Built.
Lovable Italian priest tours USSR with his own agenda.......1998-01-16
Giovanni Guareschi's irascible, irrepressible
Don Camilloworms his way into a select group
chosen by his rival Peppone (nowa Senator) to
receive a guided tour of Kruschev's USSR.
Can Don Camillo turn the hearts of a few
"godless Communists" without bringing ruin
on his old friend?
This fifth Don Camillo book dates from 1964
and is the only one to take the beloved
characters from their Po Valley setting, but
Guareschi still works his magic on the reader.
