ringtone88.com d including a comprehensive discussion of Fibonacci numbers. The second part of the book involves the practical application. The authors being brave enough to keep the work from older editions of the book with forecasts and guidelines intact. There's a little discussion of cycles and other theories including Dow Theory and the Kondratieff Wave. The Elliott Wave theory is applied to stocks and gold with detailed forecasts and descriptions and in my book, the forecast for the 1990s with great detail and discussion as to the reasons for the forecast.

If you like this book, you may also find useful some of the work by Bryce Gillmore (from Australia) in his two hard to find (and more recent) volumes.

This was, and I think still deserves recognition as being a ground breaking book in technical analysis.

Best wishes for your trading and thank you to Robert Prechter and A. J Frost for a such a wonderful piece of work.

1 out of 5 stars Subjective and unconvincing.......2006-07-13

I purchased this book many years ago when i was market uneducated and market naive and believed that I was missing something as I could never make the connections the author has made throughout his book. After years of studying the markets and attempting to trade profitably, I have revisited this book once again and am just as annoyed with the conclusions the author has made. I am confidant that my work resolves the wave like behavior that defines price movement more precisely than the author. Perhaps it was the clean slate with which I began my research. From what I can gather, people were attracted to the wave analysis because of the author but unfortunately his thesis has proven to be ineffective for traders. As a member of the technician's society I have hoped to introduce my ideas regarding this subject to the author and convince him my approach is more applicable than his. I am embarrassed to announce that this is not even my full time job as real estate consumes much of my time and trading is merely a hobby. Just think if I were able to devote full time. Regardless this book fails just as it did the first read many years ago.

Amazon.com Audiobook Review

Listening to these time-honored poems, it's difficult to imagine the young Frost struggling to find a publisher for his work. In fact, he was nearly 40 (and living in England, of all places) when A Boy's Will, his first collection, appeared. Over the next 50 years he would become the quintessential American poet, securing a well-cushioned catbird seat in the literary canon.

Performers Susan Anspach, Roscoe Lee Browne, and Elliott Gould, among others, heighten the conversational cadences of a writer who seldom strayed from his beloved iambs. Included are "Mending Wall," "The Road Not Taken," "The Death of the Hired Man," "The Fear," and much more, all complete and unabridged. (Running time: 1 hour, 1 cassette) --Martha Silano

Book Description

This is the only comprehensive volume of Robert Frost's published verse; in it are the contents of all eleven of his individual books of poetry-from A Boy's Will (1913) to In the Clearing (1962). The editor, Edward Connery Lathem, has scrupulously annotated the more than 350 poems in this book.

5 out of 5 stars Robert Frost, the poet for poetry lovers.......2007-04-12

I have read Robert Frost's poetry for years. There's nothing better than being curled up on the sofa on a cold afternoon drinking hot cocoa, and browsing through a Robert Frost poem book to warm your heart. For years I had been looking for a complete collection of Robert Frost's poems. I'm glad I found it a Amazon.

5 out of 5 stars Frost's treasure.......2006-08-24

Robert Frost has a world-wide admiration. And in this book, you can find all his poems grouped neatly in sections connecting them to the place they are written in. So to put it in a nut shell, it is just what you are looking for if you want to buy something you won't regret.

5 out of 5 stars North Country Simple?.......2006-07-13

Frost's poetry is like the essence of New England's North Country-it's sparseness, praticality, absence of frills, fall color, winter bleakness but strong, independent confidence. Yet in both the North Country and in Frost's poetry there is an underlying complexity and an openness to unfettered interpretations. This book delivers Frost's work in a simple, straightforward manner. His poetry needs no fancy presentation but then neither does the North Country. Visit both, but especially Frost.

A warning-it may be best to read only one or two poems a day. The more time each is thought about, the more it grows in depth and thought complexity-or doesn't....

2 out of 5 stars Trite and banal.......2006-05-03

I wonder how long it will be before Frost's literary stock is devalued as much as it deserves to be. These are trite and banal poems that do not ring true or sincere. Frost seems distant from both his poems and the reader. What he has to say is obvious and unoriginal. How he says it is on the level of a hallmark greeting card at its best; at its worst, it is no better than a limerick. Posthumous revelations about his horrific cruelty to others and his shrewd creation/manipulation of his celebrity image as the New England farmer-poet only confirm that there was something seriously wrong with this man and his poems that an earlier generation missed. How earlier generations could find genius in such obvious observations is astounding.
Bad poetry from a twisted man.

4 out of 5 stars Good Collection.......2006-03-17

Really good collection. I was able to find an old pressing of a collection of his poems that has one extra book release in it, but otherwise they were identical. I don't need to say Robert Frost is a great writer.. This is a very good collection.

Book Description

Robert Frost is one of the most widely read, well loved, and misunderstood of modern writers. In his day, he was also an inveterate note-taker, penning thousands of intense aphoristic thoughts, observations, and meditations in small pocket pads and school theme books throughout his life. These notebooks, transcribed and presented here in their entirety for the first time, offer unprecedented insight into Frost's complex and often highly contradictory thinking about poetics, politics, education, psychology, science, and religion--his attitude toward Marxism, the New Deal, World War--as well as Yeats, Pound, Santayana, and William James. Covering a period from the late 1890s to early 1960s, the notebooks reveal the full range of the mind of one of America's greatest poets. Their depth and complexity convey the restless and probing quality of his thought, and show how the unruliness of chaotic modernity was always just beneath his appearance of supreme poetic control. </p>

Edited by preeminent Frost scholar Robert Faggen and annotated to help readers with the poet's more elusive references, the notebooks are also thoroughly cross-referenced, marking thematic connections within these and Frost's other writings, including his poetry, letters, and other prose. This is a major new addition to the canon of Robert Frost's writings. </p>

3 out of 5 stars Read What Frost Himself Published.......2007-04-14

The few finished essays that Robert Frost offered to his public ("The Figure a Poem Makes," e. g.) are so extraordinarily memorable, so full of canny, down-to-earth shrewdness and overall scintillation that I picked up his _Notebooks,_ edited by Robert Faggen in this attractive, 809 page book from Harvard with anticipation.

I am sorry to say that I was disappointed. The drafts or starts of poems seemed to me mostly flaccid and unfocussed. Of course, these are drafts; they were never meant to be read. Frost seems to have used most all his best lines in his published work. The work here never breaks into the dead-on, stunning revelations, the suggestive aphoristic brilliance of the crystallized Frost. Moreover, there are pages and pages of fragments like "A few words of policy now and then A stroke of policy now and then." That is either obvious and not with saying, or obscure in reference. There are thousands of phrases here that hold no meaning by themselves--e. g., "Not fantastic." So what? What is not fantastic? "What is philosophy. Education as inuring. Tom-tom in poetry." What is that all about?

Faggen has dutifully chased down everything an editor could be asked to chase down--references, dates, connections to other Frost material, sources of quotations. He has reproduced these notebooks with all their cross outs so indicated (and faithfully crossed out), and indicated when Frost switches from pen to pencil. On occasion there are nuggets--blasts against Roosevelt and the New Deal, bracing comic flashes ("And oh but it was fetching / To see the wretches retching"), and insight breaking through obviousness or obscurity every seventy pages. However, as a whole I don't think all this is worth it by itself, nor I'm not sure how much it helps read the Frost that is worth it, which is the Frost we already had.

5 out of 5 stars Frost Revived and Rejuvenated.......2007-03-19

I had read and heard Frost too often and had come to think of him as an old poet, too familiar, too crotchety, too tired. This volume re-ignited my interest in his life and his poetry because more than any other volume it reveals his thinking. He thinks all sorts of ways other than poetically, and thinks about poetry as well as anyone ever has.

He acknowledges that the poets "at whose metric feet we worshipped and bowed down were Arnold Keats Browning Tennyson Kipling (wooden music xylophone) Emerson Longfellow" and declares "Poetry is that in us that will not be terrified by science." In Notebook 17 (26-30) he lists 39 things that can be done with a poem besides read it.

For me, this volume makes him more intriguing and much more exciting than he has ever been before. I have gone back to the poems with enthusiasm. Readers are advised to sample back and forth to get a sense of the whole before starting from the beginning and reading through: the first notebooks are by no means the most interesting, or even typical.

As Robert Faggen's introduction emphasizes, this volume presents Frost as a first-class aphorist, comparable to Francis Bacon and Friedrich Nietzsche. Faggen's intimacy with Frost's life, poetry, and other works adds much to the introduction and notes. This must have been an exceedingly difficult task.

A prior reviewer objected to the "dark" Frost. Faggen explains that by "dark" Frost meant a great deal, not least the need to grope in the dark in order to advance. The notebooks have meditations on the dark, including this from Notebook 23:
"Dark darker darkest.
"Dark as it is that there are these sorrows and darker still that we can do so little to get rid of them the darkest is still to come. The darkest is that perhaps we ought not want to get rid of them."

I have two complaints: (1) I wish the book had a better index. Only names and book and poem titles are indexed. Of course, any kind of subject index would have been laborious, but it would have added greatly to value of this very rich book. (2) The proofreading for the editor's introduction and notes is atrocious, so plainly bad that I worried about the accuracy of the transcriptions. For instance, this note: "Enoch Lincoln (1788-1829), a Congressman for Massachusetts and Maine when the two states were one. When Maine was made separate, he represented that state from 1921 to 1926."

Even so, a huge book, hugely wonderful.

1 out of 5 stars Buyer Beware.......2007-03-17

Why am I skeptical about "the dark side of Frost". Academics need to get their work published to get tenure or to get promoted--why not claim that one of America's greatest poets had secrets and a shady past?
However, having heard about academics who studied the Frost material at UVA and Pinkerton Academy, I challenge other scholars, poets, and experts in handwriting to compare Robert Faggen's work with the original sources. The Financial Times said that Faggen "meticuously catalogued and cross referenced Frost's thoughts." If this is true, why did Faggen claim that Frost's handwriting was "abyssmal" and utterly illegible in places, and therefore had to do a lot of guessing as to what Frost had written. Other scholars have found the handwriting legible. Also, Faggen's friends assert that he reprinted all the Frost material in its entirety. I beg to differ--having noticed some glaring ommissions. I hope that a competing publisher will give another scholar or starving graduate student a chance to present an alternative transcription of this material to the reading public. With no other text to compare it to, we are asked to accept it as the gospel according to Faggen.

5 out of 5 stars An essential tool in understanding America's most famous poet.......2007-03-11

Robert Faggen has forever changed the course of poetry scholarship with this finely tuned and sensitively annotated collection of all the known notebooks of Robert Frost, our most famous and controversial poet.

Faggen's comments are helpful without being intrusive and the material itself is all Robert Frost without interpretation or added punctuation. Previously this material would have only been accessible by visiting the special collections of the major insitutional libraries that keep it under archival lock and key.

It's the kind of book you can open at random and find something fascinating to read. However, if you take advantage of the well organized and cross-referenced notes, the context in which Frost created these notebooks becomes much clearer, and the poet's creative process is revealed.

Recently, a great deal of publicity was generated when the Barrett library at the University of Virginia uncovered a previously unpublished early poem by Frost in their archives - here in this one collection are 688 pages of material that only a few scholars have ever seen. Frost fans should be lighting some serious fireworks in celebration of such an important addition to the Frost canon.

Book Description

Helping the Stork The sourcebook for all the information parents-to-be need to know about the choices and challenges of donor insemination Each year donor insemination (DI) offers a pathway to parenthood for the hundreds of thousands who turn to family-building alternatives. Although DI is considered as often as adoption, couples facing male infertility, as well as single women and lesbian couples, have had few places to turn for information about this method, which has been shrouded in secrecy. In Helping the Stork, parents-to-be, as well as friends and family, doctors, and counselors, can explore the choices and challenges raised by this alternative to overcoming childlessness. This comprehensive handbook moves through each step of the process: reaching a solid decision about whether donor insemination is the best choice for a family's future; handling the difficult issue of privacy; selecting a donor and getting started; and learning to thrive as a family meeting DI's added challenges. Full of wisdom from medical and mental health experts, Helping the Stork is also enriched with stories from many families who share their insights and experiences. This book is a reassuring, supportive, and helpful guide that no one considering or going through the process of donor insemination should be without. Visit us online at http://www.mcp.com/mgr

5 out of 5 stars Thank good ness for this book!.......2003-06-03

This book was a wonderful tool for my husband and I when we were exploring DI as an option. This is the one book that truly addresses our unique infertility situation. None of the other infertility books spend more than a page talking about using donor sperm. This was wonderful!

4 out of 5 stars A great book to help with the loss!.......2002-10-31

I am a DI adoptee and I recommended this book to my mother. She really felt validated by the book. As an DI adoptee I also recommend "Adoption Forum" by Kasey Hamner. It covers DI from all angles. And those touched by DI are represented in many of the other topics. Oh, and remember, always disclose!!

4 out of 5 stars Helped me feel less unique.......2002-10-15

I agree with other reviewers that this book focuses more on the emotional side than the technical. However, I can get all the technical information I need from my doctor. What this book gave me was a sense that there are a LOT of others out there who are doing what I'm doing. It also helped me focus on and deal with all the stress that the process brings with it. I think you can get a lot out of this book even if you are not the hetero couple that is more targeted by the examples. You still have to deal with the issues between you and the child and the donor, no matter what your relationship is, and those chapters were very helpful.

5 out of 5 stars A Godsend for us!.......2002-10-02

This book was an ENORMOUS help to my husband and me. I agree with some of the other reviewers that it is focused more on the emotional aspects and couples dealing with male infertility and may not be such a great help to single mothers and lesbian couples. But there ARE those of us out here in that category of couples with male factor infertility. My husband and I had already tried unsuccessfully to conceive through ICSI and could not afford more attempts. Donor insemination was our only other option besides adoption. This book focused on EXACTLY what we needed. What are the pros and cons, tell or don't tell others, tell or don't tell the child (I felt they were pro-telling, but discussed the positives and negatives of each choice), known donor or anonymous? These were some of the many issues we were concerned with. I didn't need a biology lesson to learn how it's done - I had other books on infertility to explain that. I didn't need a cost rundown - it varies so much, my clinic could answer those questions. After FOUR years of agonizing over whether or not to do this, this book FINALLY helped us make our decision and decide how we would handle all of the ensuing choices. I felt the authors did a great job of presenting all sides of the issue in an honest and fair way. I highly recommend it to other couples in our situation.

3 out of 5 stars Some useful info but not quite enough detail.......2002-03-27

While this book gave me an overview of the basic process of donor insemination (DI), its pitfalls and successes, I found myself wanting...more. More information, more details on exactly how it all works, why, statistics, etc. This book is, in my opinion, more focused on the emotions of dealing with infertility -- complete with little vignettes *ad nauseum* from DI parents -- the DI process and dealing with postpartum DI concerns. (While those issues are indeed important and that info useful, it wasn't really what I had expected the book to be majoratively focused on.)

For single women choosing to parent alone or for lesbian couples, you may find this book a little tiresome, as a good 90% of the language and content addresses couples and nearly every vignette/personal story (perhaps 98%) is from a DI couple. The authors are very upfront about this right in the foreword for the book, but they should perhaps be more forthcoming about that fact on the bookjacket/editorial description, as by then you've likely purchased the book. :-) In the meantime, I've ordered Single Mother by Choice (by Mattes) and have higher hopes.

Robert Frost's well-known poem takes on new life in its first picture-book adaptation. The poem--long appreciated for its strong rhythm and evocative images--leaves readers wondering, "Where was the man going on the darkest night of the year?" and "Why on earth did he stop by the woods in a snowstorm?" Artist Susan Jeffers answers these questions visually--the kindly older gentleman who narrates the poem stops his sleigh to feed the forest birds and creatures. He stops once more to visit his daughter and grandchildren, then is off again through a blizzard, with many miles to go before he can sleep. The silent beauty of a snowy night shines through Jeffers's artwork; the man's clothing and blanket are the only bright touches of color in the white and wintry world of the woods. This quiet yet powerful book has a magic all its own. (Ages 4 to 7)

Book Description

Ever since it was published in 1978, the picture-book presentation of Robert Frost's poem "Stopping by Woods on a Snowy Evening" has been an enduring favorite. For this special edition with a new design, trim size, and three new spreads, Susan Jeffers has added more detail and subtle color to her sweeping backgrounds of frosty New England scenes. There are more animals to find among the trees, and the kindly figure with his "promises to keep" exudes warmth as he stops to appreciate the quiet delights of winter. The handsome new vellum jacket will attract new and old fans as it evokes a frost-covered windowpane. This celebration of a season makes an ideal holiday gift for a child, a teacher, or a host.

5 out of 5 stars A Wonderful Companion.......2003-07-30

Robert Frost's poetry has accompanied me on many a journey throughout my life. He has helped to comfort me in times of sadness and disappointment. He has lifted my spirits as I walk through the woods with him traveling down that road less taken. He has allowed me to escape steamy hot summer nights into a snowy wood, refreshing my mind with the pictures he poetically presents. This volume of poetry has been a friend wherever my life has taken me and I highly reccomend it to any lover of Frost and anyone who enjoys a warm companion on their own life's journey.

5 out of 5 stars A Fitting Tribute to Americaýs Greatest Poet.......2003-02-13

Robert Frost has been one of my favorite poets since I watched him attempt to read a poem on a sunny, crisp morning at John F. Kennedy's Presidential Inauguration.

Although I have only owned this book for only a few months, it is already littered with Post-it notes marking the location of my favorite poems. I am told this is the only comprehensive volume of Frost's 11 published books. Edward Lathem, a Frost scholar and editor of this volume, includes bibliographical information on the poems' publication and specifies the textual changes Frost made over the years.

Although I have decades of exposure to Frost's work, I inevitably find a new nuance or thought as I thumb through this volume's pages. It is a fitting tribute to a four-time Pulitzer Prize winner and a man I consider the United States' greatest poet.

5 out of 5 stars The Ultimate Collection of Frost's Poems.......2002-11-22

This book, reputedly, contains every published poem by Robert Frost, from each of his eleven books. As such, it is the ultimate collection of Frost's poetry now in print.

If you are a Frost enthusiast, or if you like poetry about life in rural New England, you need this book.

Also intresting are the endnotes, which track editorial changes Frost made in each of his poems through the years.

This is a great book to read while sitting in front of the fireplace on a cold winter night; or while sitting in the woods on a nippy autumn day taking in the colors of fall.

5 out of 5 stars The complete Frost- The road not taken .......2005-11-07

For most of us most poets live through a few poems of theirs we have read in anthologies. It may be that in the case of a poet we especially love we have gone and read most of their poetry.
This volume presents a wonderful opportunity for the devotees of Frost to have in one book the work of a lifetime.
For me Frost is "The Road Not Taken" and "Birches" and "Mending Wall" and a host of scattered lines, " Good fences make good neighbors" and " The land was ours, before we were the land's".
Frost is also however, I must admit , for me the poet whose life casts a shadow on his work. Unfortunately perhaps I long ago read parts of the Thompson biography of Frost the central theme of which was his inveterate cruelty to all those around him.
All this has left me, you will excuse this, a bit 'cool toward Frost' and I personally prefer the more musical metrics of Wallace Stevens to the canny, often pithily wise lines of Frost.

5 out of 5 stars You'll Never Need Another Frost Book.......2005-05-19

I took a class last semester on Robert Frost, and it was quite an experience. Frost was truly a wonderful poet who deserves every bit of praise he gets (and who is unfairly ignored in academia it seems). His words are so often true and lifechanging and beautiful and honest. Nobody is fully educated until they have read Frost's classics: "The Death of the Hired Man," "Mending Wall," "Birches," "After Apple-Picking," "Storm Fear," "Meeting and Passing," etc. There are so many good ones.

The Library of America edition is a great way to be exposed to Frost's poetry. It's true that there are a lot of pretty bad poems since everything, good and bad, is included in the volume; the uncollected poems here were meant to stay uncollected. Nevertheless, that everything is here is really a great strength to the book. It's great being able to place a single poem in Frost's entire oevre. I also liked seeing how his command of the language and the forms of poetry. Seeing everything also helped to see how his conception of his role changed. Most importantly, I loved that Frost's prose and his plays were included here. There are a number of gems to be found there. I particularly enjoyed the "'Sermon' at the Rock Avenue Temple" and Frost's children's stories. The ability to read Frost's prose alongside his poetry really enhances the reading of both.

Overall, Frost was a magnificant poet who cannot be given less than five stars, and by reading everything in this edition, one can certainly gain a greater appreciation of the poet at his finest.

Are you someone who buys for the art of the book as much for the art of the contents? If so, you can't do better than any of the stellar titles from the Library Of America series of books... This splendid collection of Frost will not dissapoint...One of the many treats of this volume as is virtually true with all of the Library Of America volumes is the ease with which you can hold it comfortably in your hand...Exclusively thin acid free paper is the secret and this volume packs in a two inch thick volume what normal paper would weigh you down with five or six inches of...

What nice unedited and thorough Frost you get here!...Speaking of editing, the true Frost afficionado will want to be sure to avoid items edited by an Edward Latham...This edition is Latham free and contains Frost's work as he originally wrote it...Unfortunately, from the late sixties on, several editions of Frost went forward with unnecessary "clean up" editing by this very punctuation weilding word meister...He added to many editions extra commas and punctuation in places Frost never originally put it...If you'd like to read a much more thorough analysis of this than I can describe here, be sure to pick up a copy of writer Donald Hall's " Breakfast Served Anytime" and read the article he wrote exposing Latham and his added cleansing of Frost's work...This Library Of America edition captures Frost unedited and at his purest and best...

The reader can choose here from a smorgasbord of outstanding selections and offerings...Poetry, prose, plays...there is quite a variety of choice fare offered here...

In the words of Mr. Frost.." I'm going up to the meadow to check the newborn calf,...I shan't be long...You come too!"

5 out of 5 stars The American school anthology .......2005-05-02

This is a wonderful collection of American poetry classics. It contains most of the poems that have been taught through the years in American schools as the ' classics ' of American Literature. It does not really touch the American poetry of the past fifty years.
Most of its poems are the shorter poems of great poetic masters , for instance for Wallace Stevens, " Thirteen ways of looking at a blackbird' and the 'Emperor of Ice- Cream' but not the 'Idea of Order at Key West' for Eliot, " Prufrock" but not the "Wasteland " or the "Quartets".
A wonderful collection most highly recommended.

5 out of 5 stars A Manifested Dream.......2005-03-22

This book is the manifestation of the dream of former U.S. Poet Laureate Joseph Brodsky when he said, "Poetry must be available to the public in far greater volume than it is." Brodsky believed that poetry books should be distributed free of charge in many places, such as supermarkets and factories. He also had the idea that an anthology of poetry should be, "found in every hotel room in the land." Brodsky went on to create the American Poetry & Literacy Project in 1993, and is the compiler of this book.

This little anthology covers more than 350 years of American poetry. It includes poets who were famous in their own time such as Edgar Allen Poe, and poets whose talents weren't realized until after their death, such as Emily Dickinson. It displays American patriotism in poems such as Walt Whitman's, "I Hear America Singing", and Henry Wadsworth Longfellow's "Paul Revere's Ride." Poems such as, "Dream Deferred (Harlem)" by Langston Hughes, and "Incident" by Countee Cullen, explore themes of racial prejudice and African American culture. War, loneliness, nature, children, all the many issues and emotions we as human beings find ourselves dealing with today, are all included in this small, yet well-comprised anthology.

Many of my personal favorites include poems about poetry itself. These poets and writers give serious, and not so serious, contemplation to the art of writing. On page 65, the teacher and library assistant Marianne Moore begins her poem, "Poetry" with these lines:

I, too, dislike it: there are things that are important beyond all
this fiddle.

Moore, known for her complex poems was known as the "poet's poet," and was the editor of the literary magazine The Dial, according the book's biography about her.

Pulitzer prize winner Archibald Macleish's poem, "Ars Poetica" gives his view of what a poem should be on page 72:

A poem should be wordless
As the flight of birds

A poem should be motionless in time
As the moon climbs

The books biography on Macleish says that he was an editor for Fortune magazine, Librarian of Congress, and Assistant Secretary of State.

According to Andrew Carroll, the Executive Director of The American Poetry and Literacy Project, Joseph Brodsky never saw the final version of this book, "101 Great American Poems" before his death. He leaves us however, with Brodsky's inspiring words in his Introduction to the book:

"Books find their readers, and if not, well let them lie around, absorb dust, rot and disintegrate. There is always going to be a child who will fish a book out of the garbage heap. I was such a child, for what it's worth..."

For us, Brodsky's own poetry and the legacy he left behind in The American Poetry and Literacy Project, continues to be worth a fortune.

ringtone88.com ;B> The Northern Wars</B> examines the impact of the war on the very different social and political systems of Sweden, Denmark, Poland-Lithuania and Russia and explains why Russia emerged victorious from the wars. Robert I. Frost argues that the conditions and demands of war in northeastern Europe were different than those of western Europe and challenges the assumption that warfare in eastern Europe was resistant to change. The author also questions the traditional accounts of important figures such a Peter the Great and Gustav Adolf. For anyone interested in the history of northern Europe. 5 out of 5 stars Vivat The Commonwealth!.......2006-06-11

Polish Hussars, Crafty Lithuanian Dukes, Mad Danish Kings, Gay Swedish Boy Kings, Patient and Lethal Muscovites, Prussian Electors and Lettish and Estonian Barons fill the pages of this seminal and erudite work of history. I can only echo the other reviews of this fine work of well researched, and enjoyably written history. For any and all interested in the histories of any of the nations taking part in the "Struggle for the North" you simply can't do better than this excellent study. Despite its hefty price tag (I got it for less some years ago) it IS worth it. Long Live the Commonwealth!

3 out of 5 stars An erudite collection of essays........2003-05-12

This book is a collection of discrete essays on the theme of the Baltic or Northern wars. In the period following the end of the crusading in the Baltic region four key players emerged to contend for control of the crusader states. These were Sweden, Denmark, Russia and Poland/Lithuania.

Frost analyses the rises and falls of the influence of each of the states over time with regard to a number of factors.
1. He looks at the makeup of the military machines in each state. The ratio of professional and conscript soldiers. The makeup of the officer corps. The percentage of cavalry to infantry. The adoption of firearms, the development of the Huzzar to replace heavy cavalry, the failure of early mounted musketeers against Polish cavalry shock tactics and the ability of well drilled infantry to frustrate cavalry ambitions as practiced by the Swedes.
2. He looks at the relationship between ruler and state, from the wholly autocratic Russian system to the almost democratic Polish and Lithuanian system. The income of ruler and state such as the ability of Danish kings to act autonomously of their parliament due to the money from sound dues etc.
3. He looks (most interesting to me) at the ability of nations to fund war. The cost of standing armies and mercenaries. The need to vote extraordinary funds to armies in times of national peril. The difference in support given to rulers by landowner classes in periods of defence against an agressive neighbour and in periods of national expansion. His analysis of the economics of war is where Frost excels.
4. He also places the northern wars in their temporal, historical and geographical context by commenting on the developments in Western Europe, the 30 years war, the wars of the protestant reformation, the expansion of the Ottoman Turks in the south of the region, the incursions by Tatars from the asian steppes etc.
5. He analyses the impact of war on the societal makeup of the countries in the region. How landownership and serfdom developed, the evolution of the Cossack class, and so on.

If you are looking for an adventure story about knights charging into battle this is probably not the book for you. If you are looking for real history on the different approaches that can be taken to wage war, and how these strategies played out in short and long term, then this is a very useful read.

Because they are discrete essays it is possible to deal with them one at a time. Although the essays move chronologically through time, they deal with different sets of players and different types of tensions. Frost strives to uncover why any given set of strategies was successful in the time period where they worked.

5 out of 5 stars Polish Lancers, Swedish Boy-Kings, Russian Musketeers..........2001-10-18

... what more could one possibly ask for in 400 pages? Between 1558 and 1720 the Baltic region was in an almost constant state of war. It began as a quadrangular contest for hegemony, Denmark vs. Russia vs. Sweden vs. Poland, and marked the evolution, in three of these states, of a modern military system led by an autocratic ruler. The unwillingness of fourth, Poland-Lithuania, to adapt its constitution and embrace a militarized state, led directly to its demise. Frost is quick, however, to combat the "traditional" Western history which is dismissive of Eastern military tactics and glibly attributes Russia's early setbacks and Poland's later humiliation to supposed "backwardness." As he explains, the great institutions of the East, such as the Polish cavalry, owed their existence to local conditions and geography. Nor was there any intrinsic reason why Tsarist Russia, as opposed to another political unit, should emerge victorious in the end. The one intriguing element in this drama is the rapid emergence and equally precipitous collapse of Sweden: the first mention of King Charles XII, doomed genius of the North, will quicken the pulse of even the most jaded reader. This is a great piece of scholarly writing.
