Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars One of the best anthologies I've read.......2007-06-08

Usually anthologies are like panning for gold. You've got to sift through a lot of dirt to get the gold nuggets. This anthology, however, was the motherlode. All the stories were entertaining. Out of the nine, the last two were the weakest, but still a good short read.

I was pleasantly surprised by Charlaine Harris's contribution. I expected a Sookie story, but instead received a good vampire/werewolf story with no Sookie in sight. It is alwasy nice to see another part of the world which an author has created.

Jim Butcher was in true form with his entry. Gee I just love Harry Dresden, no matter what he is doing.

All in all I recommend this book for a short quick read. I already have a waiting list of people who want to borrow it from me.

4 out of 5 stars teaser!.......2007-05-31

what a teaser! Just when u are getting into one of the story, its over! but i guess that is what u can expect from and anthology.

5 out of 5 stars Wow! great collection.......2007-04-23

This collection was just stunning! Great combo, some of the stories are amazingly funny and a few are very spooky. Wonderful read, but a few at a time, there is definitely some overlap of ideas. P.S. LOOOved the Esther Freisner story. But I'm biased.

4 out of 5 stars pleasantly surprised.......2007-04-03

most books with multiple authors are rather disappointing but this one wasn't. all the stories were funny, interesting and great to read. i highly recommend this one to anyone who likes supernational and funny stories.

2 out of 5 stars Not very interesting or fun.......2007-03-21

I didn't love it. In fact it took me a month to read it. I'd flip through the stories, read one, skip the next...I eventually read all of them. I didn't like the L.A. Banks story at all, but then again, I hated "Minion." If I tried to write as "ethnic" as she does, my review would say, "Oh vey! The schmaltz in that story made me messhugana! So much mishigas for a little shtup!" Enough already. I liked the Charlaine Harris story, that was worth reading. Overall, phooey on this collection. I've read novels by most of the authors and enjoyed them more than the individual stories here, with the exception of Jim Butcher; I didn't like his Dresden books but thought the story here was well written and interesting. I really like the paranormal genre so this book was a dissapointment for me.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Bizarre and beautiful.......2006-09-29

YEAR'S BEST FANTASY 6, edited by David G. Hartwell and Kathryn Cramer, is an engaging anthology of the absurd, the fantastic, the beautiful, and the horrifying, comprising twenty-three stories written by some of the best in the industry. The tales range from light and whimsical, as in "Still Life with Boobs" by Anne Harris, to dark and chilling, as in Laird Barron's much-acclaimed novella, "The Imago Sequence," which has been nominated for the World Fantasy Award in the long fiction category for 2005.

The book comes in with a tiger in Yoon Ha Lee's elegant parable "Eating Hearts," and goes out with a tiger, in Connie Willis's smartly crafted homage to H. L. Mencken entitled "Inside Job." Kelly Link's outstanding "Monster" is a tongue-in-cheek modern-day version of Beowulf in a boys' summer camp; and Bruce Sterling's satirical "The Denial" brings to mind the genius of Isaac B. Singer. Authors include Esther M. Friesner, Neil Gaiman, Alaya Dawn Johnson, Jeff VanderMeer, Patrick Samphire, Gene Wolfe, Delia Sherman, Tim Pratt and Greg van Eekhout, Gavin J. Grant (husband to Kelly Link), Candas Jane Dorsey, Timothy J. Anderson, Claude Lalumière, Deborah Coates, Heather Shaw, Garth Nix, Jonathon Sullivan, and Liz Williams.

Award recipient David G. Hartwell is the senior editor at Tor/Forge Books, the publisher of THE NEW YORK REVIEW OF SCIENCE FICTION, and the author of AGE OF WONDERS.

World Fantasy Award winner Kathryn Cramer is an editor at THE NEW YORK REVIEW OF SCIENCE FICTION. She has also co-edited the outstanding anthologies, THE ASCENT OF WONDER, THE HARD SF RENAISSANCE, and the YEAR'S BEST SCIENCE FICTION series.

YEAR'S BEST FANTASY 6 is highly recommended reading for anyone who enjoys variety in the fantastic.

Book Description

She is beautiful, she is a princess, and Aphrodite is her favorite goddess, but something in Helen of Sparta just itches for more out of life. Not one to count on the gods—or her looks—to take care of her, Helen sets out to get what she wants with steely determination and a sassy attitude. That same attitude makes Helen a few enemies—such as the self-proclaimed "son of Zeus" Theseus—but it also intrigues, charms, and amuses those who become her friends, from the famed huntress Atalanta to the young priestess who is the Oracle of Delphi.

In Nobody's Princess, author Esther Friesner deftly weaves together history and myth as she takes a new look at the girl who will become Helen of Troy. The resulting story offers up adventure, humor, and a fresh and engaging heroine you cannot help but root for.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars rethinking her long-held image as merely a beautiful woman and a passive prize of the Trojan War.......2007-06-01

Probably all most of us know about the ancient figure of Helen of Troy is the famous quote about "the face that launched a thousand ships." In NOBODY'S PRINCESS, Esther Friesner, a prolific and well-respected fantasy writer, fearlessly takes on the formidable task of turning Helen into a flesh-and-blood girl, with her own hopes, dreams and ambitions.

In Friesner's take on ancient tales, Helen is a Bronze Age princess of the brave, warlike Spartan people. Destined to be queen (the Spartan succession was matrilineal) and told from an early age that her beauty far outshines that of her sister Clytemnestra, Helen is convinced that there must be more to life than spinning wool, weaving cloth and accepting the hand of a worthy suitor in marriage. In fact, even as a child, Helen exhibits the kind of fierce independence, stubbornness and bravery that will serve her well as queen.

As a young girl, Helen decides three things:

"Even if I was pretty, it wasn't going to be enough to bring me the life I wanted: one where I was free to make choices that mattered, one where people listened to what I had to say.

Aphrodite had the beauty; Zeus had the thunderbolts. Everyone loved Aphrodite, but everyone listened to Zeus.

I'd never get my hands on a thunderbolt, so if I wanted to be free, I'd better find a way to get my hands on the next best thing: a sword."

Through the rest of Friesner's novel, Helen sets out to accomplish these goals. From teaching herself to run as swiftly as a rabbit to obtaining secret sword lessons to receiving hunting training from her mother, Helen is determined to be no ordinary princess. Soon she is using her new skills (combined with her strong heritage and her intrinsic tenacity) to reshape her world as she sees fit, regardless of what her society might say. Her strong personality continues to grow and take shape right up to the abrupt ending. But stay tuned, since the sequel, NOBODY'S PRIZE, is due to be published in 2008.

In her extensive author's note, Friesner reveals how much of her novel is based on preexisting sources. The answer? Not much, since Helen is rarely mentioned in literature outside of THE ILIAD and a handful of other apocryphal tales, and virtually nothing is known of her early life. This gives Friesner a nearly-blank slate in which to set her tale. That being said, however, the author does ground her story in ancient history, introducing actual customs, details of daily life and political struggles into her narrative.

Helen's story is so compelling that readers will find themselves rethinking her long-held image as merely a beautiful woman and a passive prize of the Trojan War. Instead, in Friesner's exhilarating, thought-provoking retelling, Helen proves that beauty is far more than just skin deep.

1 out of 5 stars Not worth the money.......2005-08-20

I had high hope for this book. I've heard good things about lawrence Watt-Evans and I'm a fan of Friesner. Unfortunately, this book does nether of them justice. The story idea is interesting enough (enough for me to shell out the money for it). A conquered queen gives birth to triplets and has to send two away or be killed, but the old retainer takes the two boys, and leaves the girl. But the actual writing makes me think its aimed for 10 year old maturity level, with a genius vocabulary level. The writing style is not captivating, and I pushed through several chapters after losing interest on the hope that it would get better... It didnt. This is the first time I've not been able to FINISH reading a book I started.

5 out of 5 stars A funny, light read.......2002-11-12

This book is a hoot! It sends up most of the major conventions of the fantasy genre and has a great time doing it (what else would you expect from these authors?) Read this book a little at a time so you can savor all the zingers. But DON'T read it before bedtime--laughter is not conducive to sleep!

4 out of 5 stars Rather amusing.......2000-11-22

This is a nicely done comic fantasy book. The characters are fairly shallow, the cliches are rampant and yet the book is an well done poke in the ribs at traditional "serious" fantasy. At times it comes off like a cross between a Monty Python script and the "Who's on first" conversation.

My only complaint is that it takes a little bit (50 pages or so) to ramp up to the truly funny scenarios, and thus initially gives the mistaken initial impression of not being all that entertaining. Once it's warmed up though it's a good fun read.

5 out of 5 stars Funnier than the Tough Guide.......2000-03-26

This great rip on fantasy cliches predates Dianna Wynne Jones' satire by almost a decade, and it's considerably funnier. I love rereading it every couple of years; it's a keeper.

5 out of 5 stars Very Entertaining.......2000-03-14

I found this book very entertaining and light-hearted. A nice change from most of the serious fantasy and science fictions stories.

Obvious this is not a serious book. But the short stories are fun to read and are easy read for some quick amusement. The stories a matriarchal which is refreshing change of pace from the old damsel in distress. I give this three stars.

4 out of 5 stars Fun, satisfying short stories.......2006-06-11

5 out of 5 stars Yes! They have a Starhawk story!.......2000-08-02

I loved almost all the stories in this anthology. However, I especially enjoyed the return of Barbara Hambly's wonderfully complex ex-nun-turned-mercenary Starhawk (of "The Unschooled Wizard" and "The Dark Hand of Magic" fame)

"A Night with the Ladies" proves that the 'Hawk doesn't need her wizardly boyfriend Sun Wolf backing her up--although a few gal-pals don't go unappreciated...

4 out of 5 stars funfunfunfunfunfun!!!!!!.......1999-04-08

I loved this book! It completely blew just about every stereotype against women out of the water. While I was reading it, I constantly chuckled to myself, and occasionally laughed out loud, hard enough to bring tears to my eyes! I've never read the first book in the series, but I always wanted to, and now I do more than ever!!!!

5 out of 5 stars Thank you, Esther, for another great anthology!.......1998-05-12

As a fan of the warrior woman genre and the humor fantasy genre, I absolutely loved this book! Reading it along with the first one made for a great afternoon, especially since one author chose to write a continuation of her first story (Elizabeth Moon, write more of this stuff, please!). The dedication made me laugh out loud and immediately head to my e-mail to spread the fun.

4 out of 5 stars You can't quite get the title right in plaintext........1998-04-24

Well, it's a followup to 'Chicks in Chainmail', I'm sure that everyone figured that out already. It's not quite as sublime as some of the first, but it's entirely readable and fun. It when it goes into those court ladies, well, ok, I laughed hard enough to get the spouse to grab the book (and start laughing herself).

Fun.

3 out of 5 stars Did they ALL have to be funny?.......2007-03-08

Permit me to ask again, because I really want the answer; did they ALL have to be funny? The title is clever, yes, though it depends greatly on knowledge of the previous installments for the strength of its joke. But this anthology would have been better served if more of its contributors had been persuaded to leave it at that. The most egregious offense, given the context, is their portrayal as women. Bound and determined to be funny, the authors either exaggerate female stereotypes (giving us "warriors" who shop compulsively or worry about their hair and nails) or push the pendulum to the other extreme (portraying gigantic, violent women who drink a lot and spend the rest of their time...well, whatever the female equivalent of "wenching" is). Beyond that, of course, are the awful puns that manifest themselves throughout the volume, and, worse, the pun's bastard cousin: the fantasy or historical character who makes a reference to something or someone contemporary (the worst offender here is Turtledove's name-dropping of Matt Drudge in his pastiche of Greek mythology). A writer, especially a fantasy writer (especially a fantasy writer working with a few short pages who doesn't have the luxury of a thirty-plus book series to build his pun-based world a little more logically), has a responsibility to take extra pains to convince the reader that all this stuff is really happening. Instead, they all try to be funny, and most fail at that.

Still, some stories succeed more than others. My take on the contents:

"Myth Manners' Guide to Greek Missology #1: Andromeda and Perseus" by Harry Turtledove: Imagine all the slightly off-putting sexual innuendo of a Xanth novel, but with even less wit; Turtledove should know better.
"Chain, Link, Fence" by Steven Piziks: What to do when you've stolen an item so unique that it can't be sold? Even with its predictability, one of the cleverer of the volume's offerings.
"Fool's Gold" by Elizabeth Moon: Most notable for its treatment of the friction between natural-born dragons and transformed dragons.
"In for a Pound" by Lawrence Watt-Evans: The wife of a potential political candidate stages a guerilla raid on a dog pound to retrieve her husband, who has wandered too far afield during a full moon. Cute.
"Death Becomes Him" by Marina Frants: That staple of Russian folk tales, Baba Yaga, sends her apprentice on a quest. The magical duel is uninteresting and perfunctory, but it's not really the point anyway. Probably the most "serious" story here.
"Straight Arrow" by Susan Shwartz: It can be tough for women in such traditionally male professions as warrior or fighter pilot, but these are strong women, who are able to overcome adversity because they can work together. Because that's what women do. Especially strong women. Which these are. Also, it's a ripoff of Brigadoon. Only with all women. Strong women. In case you missed it.
"Bad Heir Day" by Rosemary Edghill: Amusing take on the Arthur legend; the precociousness of the narrative voice isn't enough to overwhelm the story, thankfully.
"Why Do You Think They Call It Middle Earth?" by Susan Casper: Oy vey.
"Leg Irons, the Bitch, and the Wardrobe" by Laura Frankos: Interesting tale of intrigue in the royal theatre, absolutely killed by the awful title.
"Shiftless" by Josepha Sherman: A married team of shape-shifters takes on a local lord. Good right up till the end, when it tries to get too cute.
"May/December at the Mall" by Brian D. Akers: An interesting setting (a mall out of time) is about all this has to offer; nothing much happens, and when it does, it's over in seconds.
"Yo, Baby!" by Jan Stirling: Hijinks surround an apparent foundling in this story of magical transformation and a usurping Duke.
"Don't Break the Chain!" by Jody Lynn Nye: We get the joke (magical chain letters with real curses) immediately, but it just goes on and on.
"Cross CHILDREN Walk" by Esther M. Friesner: Corruption of politicians and wizards endangers a town. Among the stronger efforts, though the ending bogs down a little in all the exposition and misdirection.
"...But Comedy is Hard" by Kate Daniel: Intrigue surrounds a missing Greek actor and the Amazon charged with tracking him down. Not bad.
"Baubles, Bangles, and Beads" by Kevin Andrew Murphy: Usually an exotic setting (in this case Africa) is meant to cover up a thin plot. Not here; one of the most enjoyable stories in the book.
"Hallah Iron-Thighs and the Five Unseemly Sorrows" by K. D. Wentworth: Two warriors set out to slay a dragon and rescue several missing princes. Falls into a common trap; to underscore the women's heroism, the men have to be a bunch of mincing ninnies.
"Miss Underwood and the Mermaid" by Sarah Zettel": A mermaid and a fairy battle over the hand of a mortal man.

Let me say, in closing, that it's no accident that the most serious and least "humorous" stories in the collection are, without fail, the best. Someone should apprise the editors of this principle for the sake of future volumes.

4 out of 5 stars Much Better than Chicks in Chain Mail.......2006-05-13

Having not liked, in general, Chicks In Chain Mail I'm happy to be able to report that I actually enjoyed this follow up. The stories are definitely of a higher caliber and much more amusing.

In particular I found "Leg-Irons, the Bitch and the Wardrobe" laugh out loud funny due to the theater jokes. As opposed to Chicks in Chain Mail, this entry in the series manages to have a wide variety of stories within the constraints of the rescuing men plot dictated by the title. The definition of rescue may be stretched quite a bit in some of the stories, but it is all to the good and creates a better range of stories.

Cute! I like the concept.

Men need to be rescued and then spanked for making us go to the trouble.

Eighteen stories of warrior women who come to men in distress. The tables have been turned! This is the second in, what I hope will be, a series. These women may look like "babes" in very little chain mail, but they show themselves to be able to take care of themselves...and other men. My husband and I enjoyed it thoroughly!

Book Description

One good turn deserves another and those unpredictable amazons are back, swords sharpened, chainmail polished, and makeup in place, ready to fight the good fight on the field of battle (and also on the bookstore shelves). And if you think they're just male wish-fulfillment fantasies, you'd better say it under your breath where they can't hear you, because these barbarian babes were born to battle. All new adventures by fearless women warriors by Eric Flint, author of 1632; Nebula-winning author Harry Turtledove; Jody Lynn Nye, co-author of the best selling The Ship Who Won; Campbell Award-winner Wen Spencer, and many more, including the inimitable Esther Friesner herself, as fantasy adventure takes a turn for the lighter side.

4 out of 5 stars Good Stories.......2006-04-22

It has taken a long time for this volume to come out and make it to mass market paperback. I have mixed feelings about this fifth collection of Chicks in Chainmail stories.

This series takes the artists' ideas of women warriors, mainly chainmail bikinis, and pokes fun at the whole concept. Or it used to. In this volume the reader is treated to a very nice selection of stories involving women warriors. They are very-well written and quite entertaining. But the humor aspect is missing. A couple of the stories are a little lighter but most lack the digs of the early collections.

If you are looking for more of the type of humor found earlier in this series, you might be disappointed. But you won't be disappointed in the quality of the writing presented here. An excellent collection of stories but I miss the humor. There were some jokes (some even repeated by more than one author) but not like there used to be. There was also a larger percentage of transgender and transvestite issues than in previous volumes. I personally did not find this as a flaw but was just surprised at some of the similarities of issues amongst the stories.

5 out of 5 stars I'm forced to give this 5 stars simply because it's so good........2005-11-16

The story Mightier Than the Sword by John G. Hemry alone is worth the price of the book. As usual a great series of short stories. A BUY and KEEP book at any price.

4 out of 5 stars Quite funny.......2005-10-22

I got the original "Chicks in Chainmail" in high school, and it is one of my favorite fantasy books. "Turn the other Chick" is also quite good, continuing one or two stories from the original. This is "amazon humor" with strong women, tons of puns and some sexy scenes (making some of the stories PG). I had a lot of fun with it.

5 out of 5 stars McCoy fans start here!.......2006-11-29

Great book -- not just for young readers. Finally someone captured the personality in process of Leonard McCoy. With a terrific plot and the chance to see McCoy hook up with Spock and Kirk for the first time, I would rate this as one of the best Star Trek books written.

5 out of 5 stars McCoy to a tee!.......1997-03-14

This was an excellent piece of penmenship. It fit the charcters Spock and McCoy really well. The appearence by Kirk was a great idea. The part with McCoy's father at the end was a pleasant surprise. I also liked the part about how the girl McCoy liked was already taken by the troublemaker Jim Kirk. Keep up the good writing Jon Vornholt! Also another excellent job by Todd Cameron Hamilton. he captures the charcters very well.

Book Description

Until she stumbled upon the Divine Relief Temp Agency, Ilana Newhouse was having a hard time finding a summer job. Apparently, a T-shirt that reads "Orc: The Other Green Meat" isn't appropriate for an interview. But when she reports for her first day as a temp, Ilana discovers why Divine Relief isn't shy about hiring someone a little left of ordinary. Ilana is temping for the extraordinary, life-controlling, Greek mythological goddesses, the Fates. Now her summer is going to be less about surviving a stuffy office and more about avoiding being turned into a pig, or worse!

4 out of 5 stars Mythology, Humor, Fun Characters--this one's got it all.......2007-03-18

Ilana Newhouse is desperate for a summer job. Any summer job. So, she doesn't worry too hard when the temp agency that hires her proves to be a little . . . strange. It turns out that Ilana is temping for The Fates of Ancient Greek fame. And that's all I can say without giving away the plot too much.

This book gets major points for putting ancient Greek gods (and some other myths from other countries) into a modern setting and preserving their integrity. The gods that we meet in the story are convincing characters and they work perfectly in the modern environment. It's the first book I have read in a while that can claim as much.

Furthermore, the story is hysterical. Ilana is a true oddball and following the plot through her point of view is a lot of fun. Friesner had me laughing out loud several times during the reading of this story. Some of the characters come off more like cartoons than "real" people, but that's probably to be expected of a story like this. Friesner introduces some great characters in a fun, upbeat story that readers will definitely want to see again.

1 out of 5 stars Mediocre fluff.......2006-10-09

Derivative pseudo chick-lit. The idea of Greek gods as air-headed Americans is neither new nor, in this case, amusing. The humour is unfunny slapstick and the more serious points are hammered in as crudely as if to an audience of six-year-olds. Even as a young adult novel it is condescending and shallow. If this were the work of some incompetent first-timer I might be more forgiving, but Friesner is capable of far, far better work than this.

4 out of 5 stars Entertaining silliness.......2006-09-23

Ilana Newhouse needs a summer job, and she's not having much luck. For some reason, potential employers are put off by the little skull she drew on her face in ink, or the t-shirt reading ORC: The Other Green Meat, or her unfortunately sardonic sense of humor, or maybe just her hazy acquaintance with punctuality. Things aren't looking good until she finds a business card in her sister's room, and calls the Divine Relief Temp Agency.
It's very disorienting when she finds herself temping for the Three Fates--Clotho, Lachesis, and Atropos. Oh, and Arachne hangs around the office, too. Weekly meetings with her fellow temps, at a coffee house run by Circe, also add variety to her life, and the only damper on what's turning out to be a good summer is all the disruption caused by her sister Dyllin's upcoming wedding. When Ilana learns that she and the other temps can borrow the powers of the gods they temp for, she can't help trying to fix just one or two little things, and Ilana starts to get acquainted with the meaning of the word "chaos." (This is apparently a sequel to an earlier book, but not having read it didn't seem to be a problem.)
Great fun.

4 out of 5 stars Irreverent of ancient mythology, but a great book!.......2006-07-10

This book was very funny and well-written, regardless of how irreverent it was. I enjoyed it thoroughly and it showed me that there are worse summer jobs than mine. Unfortunately, it didn't have so much closure, and I really want a sequel to tie up all the loose ends. Excellent.

5 out of 5 stars Funny and original.......2006-06-17

In her newest novel, Friesner takes us into the world of teenage summer jobs-and actually makes it exciting! This book has the perfect mix of everyday life (friendships, bosses, family, love interests, COFFEE) and mythical fantasy (gods, goddesses, talking insects, what have you). I was drawn in by the witty, fast paced dialogue and the original plot line. I think this story will appeal both to the die hard sf fans and to people new to the genre, myself included. Maybe we'll be reading more about the gang at D.R. Temps in the future? I hope so!
