Great book for students starting med school.......2007-02-08
This book was really helpful in giving me the general insights into different specialities that I ought to keep in mind as I enter med school. Moreover, the book is excellent in preparing you for what you have to do to be a competitive applicant for residency.
Medical Specialty.......2007-01-09
Very helpful in reviewing the different specialties in the medical field. Great for helping that medical student get an early jump on what area to consider.
One of the better books on comparing specialties.......2006-03-20
I would recommend this book to the undecided medical students in their 3rd year- I bought this early in my 4th year after having read Anita's book on Choosing a Medical Specialty, and still being uncertain. I was trying to talk myself out of Gen Surg... Ultimately, a book is not going to make the decision for you, but it is good to be informed and it helps to either reinforce what your gut instinct is telling you. Try to borrow a friends or buy a used copy- but it's definitely worth a read!
Great advise for the single med student.......2005-09-09
This book has great advise in it for the single med student. However, if you happen to be married and a parent most of the advise is far too time consuming and impractical.
Informative.......2005-08-02
A good read, especially given information from both professionals and those currently in residency. Current as of late '03...so still relevant information. I'm an MS1 and enjoyed the book as it gives me a much better idea of many specialties/subs.

Book Description
SQL Server 2000 is the leading relational database in the Windows market. The increased manageability of SQL Server 2000 has "lowered the bar" with regard to the people that can use it – anyone can use a SQL Server database. However, this book recognizes that aspiring DBAs need more than just a basic knowledge of the available features in order to be considered "a safe pair of hands" for the database and the mission-critical data that is stored in it. They require direction and advice from an expert mentor who not only understands the features available and how they should be used, but also knows what it takes to be a good and effective DBA. In essence, this book is that "mentor", and this is why the book stands apart from the "feature overview" competition.
The book teaches a database novice the core job and roles involved in administering a SQL Server database. It follows the lifecycle of the database, from installation, design and modeling, through development, tuning and securing to growth and migration. It provides practical advice ("How to..."), answers typical questions that they'll encounter from managers and developers ("How do I..."), and offers practical steps to overcome issues with which beginners traditionally struggle. At every stage, it establishes a range of tried-and-tested practices and techniques that will establish and maintain the health of a DB system ("How to be a good DBA").

A review.......2006-11-23
Warning! This might be a wonderful book except for the fact that the publishers decided to use much smaller print than is normally used for computer manuals. If staring at small print is not a problem for you then buy this book, otherwise you might be better off buying another book with normal sized print.
A very good book for SQL server self-learner.......2006-06-21
Excellent. It is a good reference for your SQL Server examination or self-learning. The examples are listed in details. If you follow them step by step, you can 100% learn the skills for your SQL server daily maintenance. I am not a professional in SQL Server, but after reading this book, I have much stronger confidence to use it.
IF THE AUTHOR CAN WRITE THE SAME KINDS/STYLE OF MATERIAL IN ORACLE FIELD, I THINK HE/SHE WILL FURTHER HELP A LOT OF LEARNERS OR USERS.
Not enough T-SQL.......2006-03-27
Overall, I would say this book is well put together and is an excellent resource. I personally was hoping for a bit more meat on the programming of the T-SQL commands and methods, but the lack of that information is not the fault of the author, merely my selection of the wrong book.
I picked up valuable knowledge about SQL Server that will serve me well, but DBAs in my company do a heck of a lot with T-SQL that apparently is not as common in other places.
Extensive coverage of what every SQL DBA should know.......2004-05-03
Packed with practical, real-world information for anyone involved with SQL Server Administration, "Beginning SQL Server 2000 DBA: From Novice to Professional" is one of the most complete administration books available. It is not without its problems but they are generally pretty minor and in fact somewhat humorous at times. For example, page 84 has a section titled "Upgrading to SQL Server 6.5" and page 90 a section titled "Upgrading to Earlier Versions of SQL Server". Obviously you don't upgrade to an earlier version nor do you upgrade from 2000 to 6.5. So, while there are errors, they are so obvious as to not be a big problem. When it comes to the technical details where accuracy is critical, I didn't find any obvious errors.
So what does the book cover? It starts with the different types of DBAs, the different versions of SQL Server 2000 available, installation methods and resolving installation problems. After getting everything installed and working correctly it moves on to working with the database with things like creating a database, basic considerations for databases (such as raid levels), and everyday administrative activities like making the database read-only, removing databases, adding databases, changing the path, creating and deleting tables. One of the things I liked about this section (and most of the sections of the book) was that it explained how to do each task by using the database manager and by using the Transact-SQL language.
Each of the sections follows logically from the prior one. With all the database management section completed the next part covers doing queries, joins, creating indexes, and similar tasks, basic backing up and restoring databases, generating a database script, creating and adding jobs, working with security and authentication, user permissions, roles, application security, ODBC, ADO, performance monitoring, and other tasks.
Although it was mentioned in brief in an earlier chapter, chapter eight provides a thorough treatment of backup and recovery. This is a very important chapter, I have run across many, many SQL installations where people did not understand the correct backup and restore procedures for SQL and made a complete mess of their system using copy and paste techniques. The author does an excellent job here and it will keep you out of trouble if you follow his advice.
The remaining portion of the book covers replication (a particularly well-done chapter), writing Transact-SQL code, creating views, error handling, writing triggers, data warehousing, data analysis, and creating a data transformation package using the data transformation package editor. Due to the breadth of coverage "Beginning SQL Server 2000 DBA: From Novice to Professional" is exactly as advertised and useful to both the complete novice and the experienced professional. Note that although it covers some of the more common uses of T-SQL for administrative purposes it is not a book on programming, it is a book on administration and within that defined area it is excellent. "Beginning SQL Server 2000 DBA" is a highly recommended read.

Book Description
In this stunning follow-up to Brian Freeman’s remarkable debut novel, Immoral, Detective Jonathan Stride discovers that there are only two ways to go in Las Vegas. You can hit the jackpot. Or you can get Stripped...
They looked like isolated cases: a hit-and-run and a celebrity murdered during a fling with a prostitute. No one could ever imagine they’d be linked to a brutal crime in Las Vegas’s steamy past—and that the race against the clock to corner a determined serial killer would stir up secrets long thought buried with the dead. As detectives Jonathan Stride and Serena Dial are called separately to investigate, they have no idea what they’re stepping into: a world where desperate ambition rules and loyalties know no bounds, and where their own uncharted emotions and sexual desires will reach an explosive conclusion.
Shocking, twisted, with edge-of-your-seat suspense, Stripped pushes the limits of its heroes and keeps the reader turning ever page until the last plot twist.
Customer Reviews:
Great -but maybe one too many turns.......2007-04-12
I thought this book was a great read as was the first book. Since I know both cities ( Duluth & Vegas) it is especailly interesting to me. I can't wait to see if Stride does indeed go back to Duluth?
This book has many twists and turns, maybe one too many would be my only negative comment.
Promising, but not yet fully mature.......2007-03-10
Imagine a mosaic that looks good from a distance. Then you get close and you realize the individual parts don't fit together all that well. That's about what I felt when I read Stripped. The main story is interesting enough to make you want to turn the page, but something about it doesn't quite work as well as it should. Perhaps the author is just trying to cram too many ingredients into the book, and some end up detracting from the overall flow (example of this would be excessive emphasis on the relationship between the two main characters and too much space devoted to exploring the homosexual theme). Or maybe, in trying to put in too many twists, the last one is given the distinct flavor of an afterthought, which again detracts from the story. On close examination, the behavior of the bad character during the climactic scene is not consistent with the smart, calculating killer he's been up until then. Similarly, in the same scene, the ruthless hotel/casino owner takes way too long to put an end to the standoff. All in all, a fairly contrived situation to allow for the key secrets to be revealed while the main characters are little more than participating spectators. In spite of all that, the setting in Vegas does give the story a certain flavor and the plot, except where it stagnates, keeps the reader interested. I think Freeman can spin a good yarn, but he needs to find a better balance for the various elements of the overall picture. Hopefully, he'll improve with experience.
You won't be sorry!!.......2007-03-07
This is my first B Freeman book and I enjoyed it immensely! His characters, descriptions and plot all are very finely written. I will continue to read his Jonathan Stride books!
Suspenseful, sexy, and great! .......2007-03-04
If you loved Immoral, you'll love Stripped, the next book about Detective Stride. Unexpected twists, sexy prose, and that good old Minnesota work ethic make this another one worth picking up. I can't wait to see what happens to Stride next!
More Fat Than a Vegas Buffet.......2007-02-25
The murder of a Las Vegas playboy and a twelve-year old boy killed in a hit-and-run seem to have little in common, but these disconnected events set the stage for Brian Freemen's second novel, "Stripped". Las Vegas homicide detective and Minnesota transplant Jonny Stride draws the former, while his girlfriend, detective Serena Dial, is working on the latter. The two cases quickly (if preposterously) merge, leading to a mystery of corruption, sleaze, and murder stretching back some four decades, linked to the Sheherezade, a legendary casino of the 60s, scheduled for demolition.
At its best, this is high entertainment, a grand epic of lust, decadence, and treachery in this world capital of sin. Give Freeman credit for an unusual plot, a rich set of characters, and a fast moving pace that keeps the pages turning.
But what could have been a 5-star read is bogged down by events and linkages which stretch credibility just a bit too far, a convoluted plot containing a collection of coincidences that are too convenient, and in the end, somewhat contradictory. On top of this, Freeman works too hard at trying to make this more important than a straightforward crime mystery, feeling compelled to burden each of his comic book-glamorous characters with enough psychological baggage to fill a full season of Oprah. The masters of hardboiled crime - the guys who embody what critics refer to as "lean, taut, prose", understand simple story lines and focus. By contrast, "Stripped" is bloated and needlessly complex, compelled to take on weighty issues that run a convoluted gamut from transsexual cops to child abuse to graft in the state house.
In the final analysis, more plastic than the boobs of a Vegas showgirl, an average mystery that if truly "stripped-down" could have been much better.

Customer Reviews:
great book read until the very end.......2007-03-03
This is the best book I have read in a long time. The mystery lasted until the last pages of the book. I especially loved it because I knew every place he was talking about from Duluth to Vegas.
Anyone would love this one. I can't wait to read his second book.
Very Good.......2007-02-02
I can't believe this book. It's one of the best books I've read in the last year or so. I loved the plot twists and how things are presented. I'm not going to give you a plot summary since others on Amazon have already did this. I enjoyed the main characters and really felt like I got to know them. I liked their interactions and how the characters were developed. I can't wait to read his next book, Stripped. Never would have guessed that this was his first book. Just really think that it was developed and thought out well. I would highly recommend this book.
Great Debut.......2007-01-02
As many of the reviews posted already have described the story I just want to add my opinion. Brian Freeman is a real talent. He is a master of surprises. The plot has many twists and turns.
There are some quibbles, especially we really do not have any clue to the character of Rachel. These are quibbles and do not get in the way of making the reading of this book a thoroughly enjoyable experience. Tonight I will start Stripped. I only hope that it will be as good as Immoral.
If so Freeman may enter the stratosphere of Connally. Now he most reminds me of DeMille before he lost interest.
HOT COPS.......2006-12-02
Entertaining? You bet. A quick read? Check. A five star book? Come on! A quick description of the women in this book; Rachel, so good looking that when a naked picture of her shows up both men and women are drooling. Serena, stunningly beautiful cop that people stop to gawk at,hasn't had sex in years and doesn't trust men(except our married hero of course because she immediately sleeps with him). Maggie, Stride's partner, again beautiful(where do all of these hot cops live?), also in love with our hero. Lavender, stripper, so gorgeous that again, people stop and stare, of course she also immediately has sex with a cop(they are just so damn hot!). Andrea, attractive but is growing a little soft in the body(warning! unattractive = problems), sleeps with our hero immediately.
Mr. Freeman falls into the Cornwell, Coben, Patterson problem of everyone being extremely good looking and heroic or fat and untrustworthy. Who can forget Coben's WNBA superstar/model/pediatrician in the Myron Bolitar novels. That said I would read another one of Mr. Freeman's books because if there was ever a true beach read, this is it.
Read this book - it's great!.......2006-08-25
I am not sure why people put in such a detailed description of the book they are reviewing. I believe you should read the book for yourself and this book is definitely worth reading. It is a great suspense novel, a real page turner and keeps your interest from the very beginning. I love the pairing of Serena and Stride and am delighted they will be together in the next novel. I have already ordered Stripped and am looking forward to reading it. Congratulations Mr. Freeman for a job well done.

Book Description
This book presents an anatomical overview of the changing form and structure of the human body. Although biomechanical embryology can be traced back to the 19th century, up until recently the most commonly accepted framework for the study of human ontogeny (development of the individual) was molecular biology, which all too frequently relied on findings from animal experiments that remained untested for humans. German embryologist and anatomist Erich Blechschmidt's research concentrates on the evidence presented by the human embryo itself. He offers a new approach to the study of early human growth as a way to shed light on the development of body build, instincts, gestures, language, mathematics, tools, and dress.

Book Description
In a riveting debut thriller that has drawn comparisons to masters of the genre like Dennis Lehane and Michael Connelly, Brian Freeman weaves obsession, sex, and revenge into a story that grips the reader with vivid characters and shocking plot twists from the first page to the last.
Lieutenant Jonathan Stride is suffering from an ugly case of déjà vu. For the second time in a year, a beautiful teenage girl has disappeared off the streets of Duluth, Minnesota—gone without a trace, like a bitter gust off Lake Superior. The two victims couldn’t be more different. First it was Kerry McGrath, bubbly, sweet sixteen. And now Rachel Deese, strange, sexually charged, a wild child. The media hounds Stride to catch a serial killer, and as the search carries him from the icy stillness of the northern woods to the erotic heat of Las Vegas, he must decide which facts are real and which are illusions. And Stride finds his own life changed forever by the secrets he uncovers. Secrets that stretch across time in a web of lies, death, and illicit desire. Secrets that are chillingly…immoral.
Customer Reviews:
What a disapointment!.......2007-03-30
The story was slow and the writer seemed to use blatant gmmicks to end many chapters.
The entire story is implausable, and the silliness of the story is even worse.
Rachel is some super woman! graeme is some nut, but he "hunts" only after having been turned down by Rachel? That is the stupidest thing i have ever read.
The entire ending is such a gimmick, it is a blantant attempt at hiding a bad story. There was no suspense, this is not a nailbiter. I wasted hours reading this book, hoping for a payoff. the payoff never came. The words "intelligent plot" shoudl never eb used to describe this book.
HORRIBLE!! The fact that this was nominated for an Edgar Award shows how bad books and writers have become.
Nominated for an Edgar . . . but why?.......2007-02-12
The middle third of this book is pretty good. That's the part that is a police procedural even though the police follow no procedures I've ever heard of. The first third, the courtroom drama is probably good if you care for legal mysteries. The last third, where the author descends into soft porn, and realism going totally out the window, is just to be endured. All this sprinkled with cliches (jeans so tight you need a knife to cut them off?) and thrown into a blender to make the storyline as convoluted as possible.
There is talent here. With a stronger editor and a decision on what genre he's writing, Mr. Freeman has the ability to write a novel that is qualified to be nominated for an Edgar. But this wasn't it.
lacking.......2006-12-10
Another reviewer was completely accurate in describing the immature sex scenes which the author seemed to feel necessary throughout the book. I felt he portrayed police and investigators as sex-starved, mindless twits who were too easily distracted from their case. There was no reason to care about any character, which made the ludicrous, slap-it-together ending less of disappointment. Pop-lit with some relationships what you're looking for? This is it. But for someone seeking a plot that actually keeps you guessing and surprises you with a satisfying ending, keep looking. And please let me know when you find it.
From Book Limbo to Satisfying Read.......2006-10-20
I guess you can say I've been in "book limbo" recently. Wandering the aisles of the local book stores looking for that book. I bought a few here and there, which were good, but left me unsatisfied and still craving a good mystery. I have been tired of the usual authors I turn to - Patterson, Clark, Cornwell. Their stories have almost become predictable to me. Almost boring. I needed something different. I must admit that when I picked up Immoral, I was somewhat intrigued but not very excited. It sat on my desk for a few days. I'd glance at it as I came and went. About the third day after purchasing your book, I finally picked it up and was immediately drawn in. This was the book I had been searching for. I devoured it in a matter of days - not wanting to put it down. Each time I thought I knew who "dunnit" I was surprisingly shocked by the latest turn. It wasn't until page 381 when I realized what Jerky Bob had to do with the mystery... but even then the story didn't end there! What a great book. I have told all of my coworkers about the author and am passing the book around at the office. People don't know what a real mystery thriller is until they've read Immoral. I am eagerly awaiting the debut of Stripped! Thank you and keep them coming!
Also, if you are interested, go to bfreemanbooks.com and send the author an e-mail. He will respond!
Great Hype....Bad Book!!.......2006-08-24
What an over hyped piece of trash.....the sex scenes are like a 14 year old boy's immature fantasies....the revelations at the end of the book are highly far fetched and just plain stupid...
The author spends more time on the main character's sex life than on real plotting....two long drawn out scenes of individuals urinating....boy ain't that exciting?
Try the "Woman in White" by Wilkie Collins to see what a real writer can do with a mystery.....However most modern readers should love it since pop fiction is all they crave...creativity be damned..

Book Description
Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) is a common problem encountered in both primary and secondary care and contributes to a substantial workload for medical practitioners in district general hospitals, teaching hospitals (about 10% of hospital admission) and the community. COPD treatment frequently involves a number of multidisciplinary team members; this series of articles would be of interest to a large number of individuals.
The ABC of COPD provides easily accessible, reliable information outlining the aetiology, natural history, diagnosis and current evidence based management of COPD. Treatment recommendations are based on NICE guidelines published in 2004 for the management of COPD.

Book Description
It's been twenty years since the friends known as the Lightning Five visited the Summer Place together. Twenty years spent living in the shadow of something they did in high school, an event that defined them forever in the minds of everyone in their small town. Now they're returning for what should be a relaxing weekend of hunting and fishing, a chance to reminisce about old times and forget their troubles... but mother nature has other plans in mind.
There's a storm brewing. A meteor shower is in the forecast, but it's going to be unlike any event in recorded history. This meteor shower is bringing change to the world, it's awakening the creatures of the forest from their quiet slumber... and before long, the Lightning Five are going to find themselves trapped on the roof of their cabin, with their numbers dwindling and supplies running low...
Trapped with no means of escape, the men will have to make some hard choices... like who gets to live and who has to die.

Blue November Storms
Brian Freeman
Cemetery Dance, 2005, $30.00
ISBN: 1587671107
In Beacon Point, Pennsylvania, the townsfolk named the high school football stars the "The Lightning Five" for their athletic exploits. Steven, Harry, Joe, Matt, and Adam were best friends and even built the Summer Place in the woods overlooking the nearby lake together. However, a girl died there, but instead of investigating what happened, the fearsome fivesome were treated like heroes.
Two decades later, Adam, who the others thought was dead as he seemingly vanished, calls his friends to ask them to meet him at Summer Place. Adam never truly overcame the tragedy that haunts him still, much more so than his buddies. Excited over the prospect of seeing him for the first time in years, Steven, Harry, Joe, and Matt agree to a twenty year reunion at The Summer Place.
The five meet filled with nostalgia and excitement, but also lingering is the one dark episode., However, a meteor shower suddenly attacks from the sky with unnatural blue stones hitting near where the quintet reunite. Not long afterwards the woodland animals go berserker trying to kill the trapped humans forced to retreat onto the roof of The Summer Place, an eerie reminder of the tragic pivotal moment in their lives with each remembering while wondering if they like the critters could turn into sociopath killers.
BLUE NOVEMBER STORMS starts off as a deep psychological thriller in which the audience wonders what happened twenty years ago and why suddenly Adam reappears; however Brian Freeman sets the reader up as the tale digs inside the psyche and soul of the lead five, it twists into an old fashion B-movie horror tale (cross between King's Maximum Overdrive and the Ninja Turtles) yet retains that soul deep look at the ensemble as each wonders if the others will turn lethal. Brian Freeman provides a solid tale that fans will enjoy.

Blue November Storms.......2005-11-04
How many times have you read a book and thought: "This book could have been a lot better if it were shorter and the writer had picked up the pace". Well, Blue November Storms is a very quick read (97 pages) and the pace is excellent. This book could have been a lot longer. The writer gives us a quick glance at these characters and then leaves us asking for more...
Anyway this is a great plot and a great little story.
In a world gone mad, five friends are trapped with little hope to escape.......2005-10-06
I loved that the characters are given real histories with each other and they're not just cardboard cut outs used to hold a place so the story can be told. I also loved the slow build, the way Freeman takes his time introducing the key plays before the storm comes. There's an underlying mystery to this horror story, and I liked how it that was built, too. All in all, I highly recommend this book.
Fun Read But Nothing New.......2005-09-30
I kept having flashbacks of scenes in Stephen King's Dreamcatcher as I read this. No, it's not the same thing, but it was obviously inspired by King's book. This is the first book I've read by Brian Freeman and although I enjoy his storytelling, his writing feels a bit pedestrian and the flow was uneven at times. He would spend time on details and then, without warning, brush swiftly over more important actions. I understand he is a young writer and I'm sure he will improve with experience. That being said, since he's not a veteran writer with a large body of work, I find it strange that he has written under the pseudonym of James Kidman as well as his real name, Brian Freeman. I'm not sure there's enough in this book to recommend it, but Freeman is certainly someone to keep your eye on.
