The Ring Is Not Enough ...

... not if, like Paris Montague, you come from a long line of women who know how to marry. In her family, the unspoken rule has always been: never wed someone who's not as well off as you, and her mother wants her last unattached daughter to find a wealthy "Mr. Right" right now.

But Paris is doing just fine with her no-strings-attached relationship with her sexy secret lover, Tyson. The man may not have money, but he knows how to push all the right buttons!

Then JaBari Nolan enters the picture -- rich, charming, and oh-so-fine, with definite husband potential. But Paris can't shake the feeling that there's something shady going on with the all-too-perfect Mr. Nolan.

Time's running out, and Paris is going to have to choose between sweet Tyson and seductive JaBari.

And maybe "up" is not the way to take it ...

Paris Montague has a dilemma. She comes from a family where just marrying someone you love is not enough. Her mother wants her to meet a wealthy "Mr. Right" and does everything in her power to make this happen. Paris is tired of her mother's meddling because she's happy with her no-strings-attached relationship with Tyson. Tyson is starting to make a name for himself in the business world and wants a more formal relationship with Paris. Things get complicated when Paris is introduced to Jabari. Jabari is rich, sexy and perfect husband material. Paris is intrigued by Jabari but something about him seems a little suspicious. Ultimately, Paris has to come to a decision between Tyson and Jabari.

Marrying Up is a wonderful novel by Nina Foxx. Foxx showed how a mother's best intentions for their children aren't always the best for them. I liked how Paris was torn between what her family desires for her and what she desires for herself. Marrying Up had a good dose of drama and intrigue that will keep the reader on their toes. Nina Foxx has once again brought us an enjoyable, delightful read.

3 out of 5 stars Marrying Up or Marrying Down?.......2005-12-19

Grow up.
Marry a man with prestige and money
Live happily ever after.

That is what Athena, Paris Montague's mother, has mapped out for her. Does Paris have plans or a mind of her own? Paris knows that one day she'll find her wealthy Mr. Right. What she didn't bank on was meeting Tyson James. Tyson is Paris' sexy maintenance man. Not meeting her family's expectations on the financial scale, Paris keeps Tyson a secret. JaBari Nolan is the "chosen one," hand picked by Athena herself. But for Paris, something with JaBari just doesn't add up. Will Paris go with her heart, which Tyson has unexpectedly stolen, or will she do right by the family? For love of money or for love of love?

Marrying Up was a cute read. No frills, no thrill, just a decent read.

3 out of 5 stars Investment in my future---happiness.......2005-12-19

"Get that ring before spring, girls!" Are you over 30, single and motivated by your job? Do people tend to pity you because unlike your other friends and relatives you're the only one who isn't planning a wedding or whipping out pictures of the kids? Relax, because you could be Paris Montague, daughter of Athena; the goddess of wisdom and war.

Competition is healthy as long as you're the one setting the limit on what you can and can't handle. In Paris' case, her mother wouldn't allow her contentment with a man who wasn't affluent. So what does Paris do? She hides the guy she's distributing her time with because in her tainted eyes he doesn't measure up to Mommie Dearest standards. On the contrary Mr. Right may be charming, and hand picked, but the alarms that are sounding off in her head are for more than one reason.

I picked this book because the cover was so captivating. I would've liked more of the dark side of the story to be expounded. It was a simple enough read void any real drama.

Paris is a woman with a family known for marrying with money. The Montagues are middle class hard working people who believe a woman should marry a man that is "established". Paris is secretly dating her lover Tyson who doesn't fit the family expectations. Paris meets Jabari whom her mother thinks is perfect for her daughter.....but Paris thinks there is something very shady about him.

This book was an okay read. The characters needed a little bit more development but the story line was great. I am curious to know what happens to Paris' cousin Alexis and her fiancee Walter...hopefully Ms.Foxx will pen their story.....

This book was a quick read and I look forward to reading many more novels by Ms.Foxx.

Paris Montague personifies money and culture, while living the good life, because that's what she knows and is what her mother Athena expects. Paris works as an administrative assistant to her step-father, Brian, at Benton and Associates, a lobbying organization with plans of moving up to partner soon. She meets regularly with her girls, Alexis and Sarah, for required maintenance at the gym by doing a Pilate's class and catch up on society highlights.

Lately, Paris has been detached from their conversations because she is intrigued by her undercover lover, Tyson. He is a man with little money, but knows exactly what to say and how to make her feel just right. There is one small problem: the rule in her family is to "never marry someone who's not as well off as you." Even though Paris loves the time she spends with Tyson, his dreams of a owning his own business are not enough to make their affair public. Besides, Athena has already selected Mr. Right and his name is JaBari Nolan.

JaBari is fine. I mean frog hair fine - have you ever seen hair on a frog? No! He is just that damn fine. Not to mention he is charming, well-educated and rich. JaBari's plan is to seduce Paris on their first date. It goes smoothly but something about him is just a little too perfect.

She wants to find out more about JaBari but she has to divert her attention to work because Brian is taken in for emergency surgery. Will Tyson's business venture pan out? Can JaBari keep his past a secret? How deep are Paris' family's bank accounts?

Nina Foxx continues to prove that she is a master storyteller who keeps the reader enthralled. MARRYING UP is a fun easy-going read with a touch of suspense that draws you into the story. Foxx brings to light the choices everyone has to make concerning happiness, values, and family. I suggest that you run out and pick up this delightful "chick lit" charmer as your next weekend read.

2 out of 5 stars Not so Wild.......2005-12-13

Going Buck Wild is a novel about a 30-year old woman named Claudia Barrett, she is a successful women with a great job. She has been engaged for 5 years and yet there is no set date for a wedding. They both seem fed up with each other yet Claudia seems hesitant to call it off. But to her dismay her fiance breaks it off before she can get around to it. While she is upset, she is also excited about a new man that comes into her life. He is Cody, a man that works in the same building as her. He actually seems like a stalker more than a man that is in lust. Claudia accepts to go out with, but what she doesn't know is that he has a very interesting past to him. The end has a very interesting twist
This novel really disappointed me, although it was some what interesting it wasn't what I expected. The tittle led me to believe that there was going to be more interesting action. Yet the "wildest" thing that happened was a make over. The relationship between Claudia and Cody was a bit strange and paranormal. Although most of the book was monotonous there was a end full of twists. I would only recommend this book if you are looking for something easy to read since there wasn't much context behind it.

This book was so boring....when I first start reading I was like ok it's just starting off very slow....but as I kept reading it appear to get slower and slower....If I could I would give this book no stars...there's nothing in the characters that you can grab onto...the Cody seem to me like a stalker and Claudia just get on my nerves...I got a headache just reading this nonsense...

3 out of 5 stars Going buck wild to nowhere.......2005-03-18

This was easy reading to say the least. When you think of a title like going buck wild you think it's going to be filled with characters going buck wild. This does nothing. I was somewhat dissapointed. I was able to finish it because the was "just" enough to hold your interest.
Don't let the title mislead you!

1 out of 5 stars Do not waste your reading time..........2004-12-16

and please take this advice! I was waiting for some good story over here and that's what i get. The only only mistake i did was not returning the book...which i should of done when i skipped about 15 chapters to get to the end of the book. So people if you want to waste your money go ahead but i would not recommend it to anyone!!!

this book works due to the charm of its heroine, who is a good girl, who still manages to be cool...plus, the story was set in my hometown. it's cool to read stories that aren't set in major cities. baton rouge is not a small town, but it's not new orleans...i'm only curious what made nina want to set her story there...ms. foxx is improving with each book she writes...

    5 out of 5 stars Good Read.......2005-10-25

I read the book on my way home from a literary retreat. I had relaxed all weekend and shared good times with other readers, and so having this mild story to top off the weekend was a treat. The story flowed well. It was not filled with 'big time' drama. It was a nice 'cute' story, a book I could hand over to my daughter sitting next to me on the plane, and not feel the need to flip pages for her (smile). Having met Ms. Fox during the retreat, I was tickled that she is as shy as she is, and it comes through in her writing, however, I do think her book Marrying Up shows growth (she did a reading)it was sold out before I could buy my copy, so I'll be ordering one soon.

5 out of 5 stars Get Some Lovin'!.......2005-06-28

When Ben Chapee dies suddenly, his granddaughter Angelica travels to Baton Rouge Louisiana to say good bye to the last of her family. With her parents dead since she was five and her grandmother gone for a year, "Pop-Pop" was the only family Angelica had left in life. Unsure of what to do, Angelica arrives in time for the funeral- and the reading of the will.

Angelica is shocked to realize she has inherited the family business: three well to do funeral homes. Funeral homes had been in the family for years. After all, Pop-Pop always said "Everyone's got to die." As well, she has been left all of her grandfather's assets amounting to two point three million dollars. It is all hers, enough to pay her way in to Julliard so that she can realize her dream of becoming a singer - on one condition: that she lose her virginity within six days.

Enter Juan Delgado, next in line to inherit his father's dry cleaning business. Only, his heart isn't in it. Longing to play his saxophone instead of smelling cleaning solvents, out of duty to his father as the oldest son Juan and his friend James are shipped out to Baton Rouge to redeem an ailing outlet of his father's. It has seen better days, but James and Juan must turn the business around in a week's time. It seems an impossible task to take on.

Angelica and Juan don't know what lies in store for them, or how impossible things might become. With a supporting cast of characters that are as well defined as the leads, "Get Some Love" is part love story, part coming of age, part thriller, part mystery that is a gumbo of emotion and hilarity. What is most beautiful about Foxx's writing is that she keeps it real, life like. There is no excess of words or hubris here, only wonderfully true to life dialogue, laugh out loud humor and crisp, clear writing.

The most shocking thing about "Get Some Love" is that it isn't what you think it's going to be when you start reading. There is a depth, a darkness, to it that is not apparent when you begin reading, but as you delve deeper you realize that this is more than a comedy of errors. It is life living on the page, deep and stirring. The novel catches you off guard, knowing that you've already judged it to be one thing when it is in truth another.

There is something and someone within the pages of "Get Some Love" for everyone, whether it is romance, thriller or romantic comedy. What is perhaps most stirring is the silence when you finish it and realize that you're done the book. I found myself wanting to continue reading, to live with these characters for a little bit longer. A comedy of errors that emphasizes the importance of love, acceptance and family.

2 out of 5 stars Want Some Love Get Some Love.......2004-11-09

I'm not really sure how much I like this book right now. The story about Angelicas life is pretty boring as of now and sort of forcing. Angelica lost her grandparents the two important people in her life that she has been with for a while. Apparently her loving grandfather was a very wealthy man and had a lot of money. The sick part is in order to get the money they want her to go to a family doctor to prove that she isn't a virgin anymore at the age of twenty one but Angelica is one of the most innocent characters I have ever read about. She also has only six days to prove this. Reading about theses six days is like reading about six years. Its like nothing is going on right now in the book and I am on page approximately 120 and it's really boring.

    2 out of 5 stars Get T o The Point!!!!!!.......2004-11-09

This book is not very exciting. The main character, Angelica Chapee has six days to lose her virginity in order to inherit the money that her grandfather has left her since he has recently passed away. The funny thing is that Angelica's grandfather just happens to be rich. This leaves Angelica surprised being that she never knew her grandfather was a millionaire.
This book is extremely boring with no surprises or action at all. It lingers with the fact of Angelica losing her virginity within six days. I don't like how the author stays on the same topic, meanwhile taking forever to get to the point! This makes me not want to continue reading the book. Although I am still reading the book and also hoping there will be some action somewhere throughout it. My opinion is that if you want to read a romance, don't read this one. It will only be a waste of your time!!!!!!!

      Book Description

When smart, successful, levelheaded lawyer Alexis Pearson gets blindsided by her faithless fiancé, who disses and dumps her, she decides to change everything. Gone are the trendy dreads in favor of her own soft and natural tresses. She's going to get her body, mind, and spirit in shape with tae kwan do classes -- and maybe kick some butt in the process to work out the aggression brought on by the abandonment . . . and her boss's unsubtle offers to help mend her busted heart. Of course, she never intended for it all to get out of hand -- and she certainly didn't mean to break the elbow of her first-time sparring partner, Remedy Brown.

At least she got the attention of this tall, dark, and very handsome nightclub owner with the unfortunate name. And though Alexis is wary about diving recklessly too soon into the relationship fire again, she can't help wondering if sexy, warm-hearted Remedy might be a remedy for what's ailing her. But the man comes with some crazy baggage -- namely Ayzah, his estranged and deranged ex-wife, who's pure, unadulterated 'hood. And suddenly both the personal and professional lives of the "new" Alexis Pearson are about to get a lot wilder . . . and riskier.

      4 out of 5 stars She's Got a New Attitude.......2006-10-02

In her latest novel, Just Short of Crazy, Nina Foxx brings back the popular Alexis Pearson. When we last saw Alexis she was heart-broken over the unexpected breakup initiated by then fiancé, Walter. To mend her broken heart, she swore off men and consumed herself in work to become one of the top grossing associates for the law firm where she is employed. To relieve stress, she has also been busy taking tae kwan do lessons and is one butt-kicking sister who takes no prisoners. Ask Remedy Brown, the tall, dark and handsome stranger who underestimates Alexis' strength and suffers a broken arm as Alexis' sparing partner. Alexis seems on edge as she copes with an over-friendly boss, the thankless task of maid of honor in her cousin's wedding and the latest encounter with a sparing partner has family and friends concerned about her well-being. Believing she is tethering on the edge, they strongly encourage her to pursue anger management classes before she seriously injures someone.

Just Short of Crazy is a funny and intriguing sequel to chick-lit read, Marrying Up. Foxx is back with her signature trademarks --Austin, TX backdrop, romance, suspense, snappy dialogue and name brand shoes. The storyline is refreshing and entertaining. It is the characters that bring the story to life and unique storylines that are creatively crafted. The characters are engaging and their antics comical and deadly. I liked Alexis' sassy, "I got a new attitude personality" and I'm not going to allow anyone to tell me what to do. Remedy's character adds spice to the storyline as he is a do right brother but when you add his psycho ex-wife to the mix, you wonder if he is worth the trouble of getting involved with in a relationship. She will stop at nothing to get him back and Alexis does not believe in backing down from a good fight. Hearing the story from Alexis and Remedy's ex-wife's voice enhanced the storyline and added breath to the storyline. Foxx always adds that extra little humph that keeps her novels from being just another romance novel. Just Short of Crazy is great comic relief for any day.

4 out of 5 stars deep character study .......2006-06-28

At the same time that her cousin is preparing for her wedding, attorney Alexis Montague Pearson struggles with the disintegration of her relationship to her now former fiancé. Her boss assumes she needs cheering up and offers to be the cheerleader, but his inappropriate action angers Alexis, who quits and files a sexual harassment suit.

To release her rage against males, Alexis decides to attend her Tae Kwon Do class though she feels bad that the last time she was there she out-sparred businessman Remedy Brown, accidentally breaking his elbow during their battle. Remedy likes Alexis and plans to use the broken arm incident as an avenue to get to know her. However, he has a slight problem, his ex-wife Ayzah, encouraged by her man, tries to extort money out of Remedy using their son as a pawn.

Nina Foxx's romantic suspense thriller is actually the comparative tale of two women as the audience along with Remedy contrast Alexis and Ayzah, who rotate first person perspective. The story line is driven by these females as Ayzah is a loose cannon, who uses the "Hood" as a protective mechanism while Alexis is a professional, who learned dirty fighting at a different type of bar than her adversary. Fans of a deep character study will want to read Ms. Foxx's strong comparative analysis of two diverse females whose only link is Remedy.

Kwame Alexander's latest book, Do the Write Thing, is a godsend. Write Thing is to the point, concise and chock full of incredible information that would take the average person several months to research. This book can save you time and money, which speaks directly to the hearts and wallets of the average American.

I found the web site references and glossary quite useful. It's also good to know that Kwame isn't speaking from pure research, but from experience, which gives the reader the feeling that they can self-publish, too.

Remember that commercial from Life Cereal with Mikey? Remember the slogan? Try it you'll like it? In the same vein, buy and try Mr. Alexander's book, you'll like it. It's all for you.

        Book Description

Amber once thought she would have been satisfied with job security as a psychologist, a not-so-saucy marriage, and a life far away from the hicks and sticks she grew up in. But the reality she lived in was far different from the world she dreamed about. Counseling began to feel like a mere management of other peoples problems.

3 out of 5 stars It was alright.......2004-05-06

I finished this book as well another book in the same day, that only tells you 2 things either it's really good or it's very dry. It was very dry I went though it so quickly but in the end it was alright.

        1 out of 5 stars Give Me A Break.......2003-10-07

This was the absolute worst book that I have ever read. I could not relate to any of the characters. The main character was manultive and self absorbed. There is no real story and I was left feeling that I wasted my money. Don't make the same mistake that I did. Go dippin somewhere else!

        4 out of 5 stars Good Read.......2003-08-04

I read this book in one night (I was meeting with the author the next day at a book conference). I enjoyed the book and there definitely was a STORY there. I feel that the author did a good job. The characters were well developed and the story line progressed well. I did buy Nina's newest book - but I have not read it yet. Also, I was totally impressed with Nina after meeting her - articulate and personable. Keep up the good work!

        3 out of 5 stars A RETRACTION AND REVISION.......2002-05-29

I posted an earlier review of this book and after receiving an email response from the author herself (within hours) of submitting my comments to her via ninafoxx.com I would like to post a retraction/revision to my earlier comments. Below is a copy of the email I received from Nina Foxx commenting on her novel. I hope this clears up any other reviewers questions/concerns about her novel.

"Thank you for your comments. There is no excuse for the editing in DMS. There is a lot that has to be learned when one embarks on a self-publishing effort. Unfortunately, I had to learn them the hard way. In the first edition, there were problems with the editor and editing that impacted the final product. Fortunately, that was corrected, but not until about 1000 of the books were sold. After that, I went on to sell over 15,000 of them, not to mention book club rights to Bookspan. This is a major accomplishment for an author that was the author, publisher and publicist for her book. DMS was my first book, unlike many of the other authors you mentioned, and it was produced with limited resources and without the backing of a major publisher. Although I decided to become a writer AFTER I wrote the book, I am glad you enjoyed the story. Prior to that, I had no training in writing, editing or publishing; I have a Ph.D. in an unrelated field. DMS was my schoolroom (That and a graduate fiction writing course from U Of W. It was a learning experience for me; I learned more going through it and making the mistakes I made than many writers ever do in their whole writing career. I have completed three other books since them (two of them fiction), and have even thought about re-writing Dippin' as a screenplay. My next book (fiction ) will be produced by Harper Collins and I will put you on my email list to receive notification when the time comes. Thanks for your comments and your support."

On a personal note, as a reviewer; If you are one of the lucky one's to purchase one of the 15,000 books with the corrections made, then you will truly find a decent story within.

        1 out of 5 stars DON'T BUY THIS BOOK!!!.......2002-05-28

I got this book as one of my 3 free from Black Expressions book club. Never heard of the author before, and the subject seemed interesting. As I was reading this book, I wondered, just what institution gave this lady her degree??!! I thought I must have received a bad copy because no published book could have this many grammatical errors or typos. So I searched online to see what others thought, and true book readers all agree. "This book was simply awful. It was filled with typo's, mispelled words, and the grammatical errors were ridiculous." This was taken from another reviewer, so I'm not alone in my opinions.

First let me say that there WAS a story here. If written by a better author, this could be best-selling material. Something all women can relate to. But Mrs. Foxx doesn't have the skill yet to really tell this story. It was so badly edited that I'm wondering if Norma Martin (editor) even got her diploma, GED no less. I even went as far to find the authors web site ninafoxx.com to send her an email. This story has so many loose ends it's ridiculous. The author has so many ideas that she doesn't know how to put them all together in this story. What happens to Tyler? Why did he come back to town and what did he do when he was there? Who ransacked her apartment? Why wasn't there any character development on Malik? You can't write half a story then sum up a quarter of it in an epilogue. Just look at the last paragraph of the book. "More important than anything, Amber knew her past had made her what she was today. She was quite proud of that fact, and except for the Malik's shooting, she wouldn't change a thing." This is just an example of some of the bad writing/editing and grammatical errors that are in this book that make it a hard read because the words don't flow together. So basically, the last paragraph of this book leaves you with this thought, this lady cannot write.
