Customer Reviews:
Calvin is the best personal theological trainer I have ever found. Don't listen to the naysayers!.......2007-05-07
What can I tell you? John Calvin helped me get my spiritual compass pointing north again! He got the flab and plaque out of my man-centered doctrine and whipped it into God and Christ-honoring shape! Reading his 'Institutes' was like getting a top-flight seminary-level education for fifty bucks. (except that unlike seminary, Calvin will strengthen your faith, not undermine it)
There are those who pick up the 'Institutes' for the first time and read it in the same way they pick up a Bible for the first time and read it. With preconceived notions and without the right historical (and spiritual) context. "It's too hard to understand. Too many words. Not relevant enough! Doesn't help me with my immediate problem(s). Doesn't add to the discussion (or debate). What is he talking about here, and why? He sure sounds intolerant! Have you got anything else?"
The Bible was not written in a vacuum and neither was Calvin's Institutes. When you realize the unbelievably adverse historical and personal circumstances Calvin did his pastoral and theological work under, you marvel that he even had strength or will to write letters to his friends and even to princes, let alone lengthy biblical commentaries and bulky catechetical tomes (which is what Institutes is). So it's only natural that his works have frequent references to some of those volatile situations and events and important, paradigm-shifting movements going on at the time, and the persons living (and dead) who were his most vociferous enemies. Read Paul's and Peter's epistles and the Gospels (and even the Psalms!). They are peppered with denunciatory remarks aimed at their enemies. Biblical faith and Christianity are not for pansies, cowards or the faint of heart. Straight talk and direct verbiage based on unchanging truth will defeat error, heresy and the wiles of the devil to encourage struggling believers and bring comfort and relief to sincere seekers.
If you have eyes to see, ears to hear, and the patience to remember that Calvin's Institutes was written first in Latin, then in French, then translated into English (and several other languages later)--and written nearly 500 years ago in a world much different from ours--then you will find an endless supply of useful and supremely-relevant spiritual wisdom and supernaturally-profound insights that will strengthen your faith and deepen your understanding and appreciation of the Scriptures and the unfolding of God's revelation to man throughout history, much more than you thought possible, and probably more than with any other book on systematic theology, ancient or modern.
Let it never be said that Calvin's Institutes should be placed on a par with the Bible or that it is free of error and infallible! I do, however feel totally confident in saying that, for a better understanding of the historical development of Christian doctrine, especially during that epochal and turbulent period called "The Great Reformation," and for a more established perception of what is biblical and unbiblical in a world of proliferating opinions and conflicting positions on matters of religion and faith, Calvin's Institutes is invaluable. It belongs in every Christian's library, period!
Disappointment.......2007-05-01
I feel like Institutes was a major let down for three reasons.
#1 Calvin does not add any value to the ongoing theological conversation
Please, please, please provide any comments to the contrary. I would love to hear them. But from where I stand, I fail to see where Calvin brings anything to the table in terms of thorough research, wrestling with issues, and trying to discover the true meaning of the text. Maybe I'm spoiled in that I went from reading N.T. Wright's COQG series to Institutes, but whereas I feel that Wright has actually advanced the conversation including doing the hard digging for evidence, I feel that Calvin has taken the easy way out and given us a meandering polemic full of speculation.
Most of the book is a rant against various heresies of the day but he rarely provides quality reasoning that makes any sense. I believe this is because the Bible doesn't address all the issued that Calvin wants it to address. But that is, I think, the number one mistake of biblical interpretation: Forcing the Bible to address issues it was never meant to address.
In business they have the phrase "to add value." A product goes from being manufactured to being in a warehouse to being sold in a retail store. The manufacturing plant and retail store are general considered to add value to the product. The warehouse is not. The manufacturing plant adds value by putting various zero-value parts together to make something of value, thus adding value to the parts. The retail store adds value to the product for the consumer by getting it to them in an efficient way. The warehouse is just a place where you store extra product while waiting for retail to request it. Value got added on the assembly line, then it was in a holding pattern in the warehouse and then value got added at the retail point of sale. I see Calvin's Institutes as a warehouse in the production of theology. He adds nothing to the conversation.
#2 Calvin is an expert at saying a lot without really saying anything
This particular problem makes a review especially difficult. During my reading and as I think back, I'm trying desperately to see somewhere that Calvin has actually done the work of a theologian and helped readers to understand God better. I can't come up with a single quote, passage, chapter, or part that I would recommend to anyone. I can come up with more than a few where I just have to stop and say, "Where the hell is he getting this from. Here is a quote from Book I chapter 15 that sounds like it is right out of Plato, not (Sola) Scriptura,
"Furthermore, that man consists of a soul and a body ought to be beyond controversy... Now I understand by the term `soul' and immortal yet created essence, which is his nobler part. It is of course true that while men are tied to earth more than they should be they grow dull... Now the very knowledge of God sufficiently proves that souls, which transcend the world, are immortal, for no transient energy could penetrate to the fountain of life."
Beyond controversy? Nobler part? More than they should be? Sufficiently proves? Transient energy? Clearly this is straight out of the 16th century. If you talked this way in today's theological discourse you wouldn't get published, but rather laughed at.
And by the way, forget Plato. That quote sounds like it is straight out of the newly released Gospel of Judas and fits in line with nearly every one of the Nag Hammadi texts (sometimes called extra-canonical gospels such as Gospel of Thomas, Gospel of Mary, etc.). Compare Calvin's quote above with this one out of Judas, "But you will exceed all of them. For you will sacrifice the man that clothes me." It seems the Calvin had fallen back, at least partially, into the Gnosticism that the early church fathers had battled so hard to avoid.
This is obviously an example of something I just simply disagree with Calvin on, but the point is that Calvin assumes all this but provides no support. The larger point is perhaps that he doesn't provide much of anything I can either agree or disagree with. He just doesn't say much. Any support he does provide is in the form of proof-texts stretched way further than they were ever meant to go. To sum up this point, Calvin reminds me of those professor's (we all had at least one) in college who would talk for like an hour and a half, and after you got out of the class, you'd ask yourself, "Did he actually say anything whatsoever in all that time?"
#3 Calvin addresses issues that are irrelevant today.
Throughout the book, Calvin addresses numerous little "disagreements" he is having with what he would consider fools. The majority of these not even considered issues to be debated any longer today. Though in the 16th century he may have been arguing against real person, his book today argues against a straw man, or I should say an army of straw men. This goes along with point #1.
A superb and enduring work..........2006-05-20
A superb and enduring literary work based upon careful biblical exegesis and ancient church history which calls for reformation, now as then, in the Christian Church. Whether one agrees with all of Calvin's conclusions or not, it is evident that his writings have greatly influenced Western thought and action. These books are required reading for the culturally aware. The modern backlash against Western civil and religious tradition demands the present-day examination of these volumes.
Calvin Institutes.......2006-03-15
very good volume of the Institutes with lots of footnotes. a must for any Calvinist or those looking to broaden their knowledge of Calvinism and what it is all about
A Brilliant Christian Thinker.......2006-03-06
John Calvin is a controversial figure in the history of thought. The main intellectual architect of the Protestant Reformation, his influence casts a shadow over everything from the Wars of Religion to the English Civil War, to the bitter split in Western Christendom between the Catholic Church and Protestantism, which continues today.
However contemporaries describe Calvin as a fairly meek and mild figure; prone to poor health and fits of coughing, Calvin died at a fairly early age by modern standards. Yet during this time he was remarkably productive, producing his brilliant magnum opus 'The Institutes of Christian Religion', his commentaries on the Bible, creeds and catechisms, as well as taking a very active life in the form of both theologian and public administrator.
Calvin's controversy comes from a certain part of his systematic theology, predestination. The logic of predestination is this; if God is omnipotent and omniescent, it is a logical necesscity that God forsaw the fall of Adam and Eve and of all of humanity. Since the Bible seems to indicate only those in Jesus Christ will be saved, it seems God has pre-destined most of humanity to eternal damnation to hell for original sin, even before they are born.
Predestination in fact does not form the central focus of Calvin's theology itself, at least as much as it did in later Calvinists. However Calvin simply felt he was returning to the theology of Augustine, which he felt (asides from the unhealthy influence of Platonism and Manicheiasm on his thought) largely got Christian theology correct. Similar positions to Calvin can also be found particularly in St Anselm and also in Jansen, before the Reformation.
Whatever the role of predestination, Calvin aimed to produce a new systematic theology which was truer to the Bible than corrupt scholastic Catholicism had been, in much the same spirit as Luther, though Calvin is more logical and systematic than Luther, having recieved a far better liberal education in the form of his humanistic studies and Law background. He is also an excellent biblical exegete, and one of the first modern exegetes who pays close attention to the original Hebrew of the text and its literal meaning, something neglected since the time of Origen and St Jerome. It is no doubt in the spirit of Calvin that Protestantism produces some of the greatest bible scholars and commentators who healthily remind other Christians to pay close attention to the Bible and its context, before wandering off into other roads.
Yet I also feel Calvin's legacy has some great weaknesses; his attachment to Augustine's rigid predestination is hard to defend when now we know the majority of the world's peoples don't know or never knew Christ at all, and that many religions have very different concepts of God or reality than the Christian one. His instances of religious intolerance and bigotry, particularly towards Catholics, and his brutal heartlesseness towards the 'heretic' Michael Servetus (noted with particular disgust by the Protestant historian Edward Gibbon) in allowing him to be executed, are certainly not in my view exemplars of behaviour to be allowed in society today. He was also in many ways blind to the beauty and power of Philosophy, seeing that humanity was hopelessly lost and corrupt in ignorance outside of what revelation could teach, a position I find hard to accept given the remarkable progress the human mind has made in understanding our own nature and that of the universe.
Despite these reservations, Calvin is a brilliant mind who sheds much new light on Christian theology and is a pivotal figure during the time of the Reformation, and cannot be ignored by any student of this period of history.

20 years young..........2006-06-01
These adventures all stand the test of time, still being funny and terrifying after all these years.
The other reviewer did a bang up job of detailing the contents. The Amazon review is wrong, however. HIL Sector Blues actually appears in Extreme Paranoia, and is only casually mentioned in the introduction of Paranoia Flashbacks.
The price here on Amazon is well worth the many adventures contained herein, chosen for fun value rather than any other reason. These are the best adventures of the previous editions, upgraded to Paranoia XP.
If adventures are what you need, I'd definately get Flashbacks before any other book in the XP line.
Good compilation of classic Paranoia Adventures.......2005-08-02
Paranoia XP: Flashbacks is compilation of eight classic Paranoia adventures, slightly updated for Paranoia XP. In addition of these classic adventures, book also contains three `Code 7' mini-missions from Acute Paranoia box set and new (and quite dull) orientation mission for freshly shanghaied Troubleshooters. For those who are wondering could they use this book with their Paranoia 2nd edition, answer is simple 'yes'. Though you need to convert characters for 2nd edition rules all by yourself, most other conversions in this book are minor and the adventures are very close to their original counterparts. Most of the original artwork is also there, but in case of some of later released adventures, some of the original artwork has been replaced with new one.

* Send in the Clones

* Yellow Clearance Black Box Blues, the
* Vapors Don't Shoot Back
* Three 'Code 7' mini-missions

But should you buy it? It depends. If you are seeking good compilation of older Paranoia material, book is goldmine. If you are searching something for one-shots, book is also very good choice though some of the longer adventures can take even three gaming sessions to complete. But if you don't really care for pre-made adventures, there is probably nothing here that would interest you, though most book's adventures have terrific ideas for killing Troubleshooters.

Book Description
There are curved stories here, intrigues and quests whose exuberance of plot and sense of farcical immersion in the world of appearances is rendered with a light touch and a sure command of tone, staging the conflict between the mind's drift and the "inflexible etiquette" of form (Gerard Manley Hopkins's "soft sift / In an hourglass"). The making of these condensed dramas is often the unmaking of the person speaking, whose "frets and fresh starts" reveal an original sensibility concerned not with self-display but with a general comedy of wrong moves. Intrepid, cross-pollinated, oblique, Mark Ford has been called an American Philip Larkin and an English John Ashbery, but in fact he is like no one else, and only occasionally like himself.

Awarded the Adele Mellen Prize for Distinguished Contribution to Scholarship This book offers a critical Latin text with English, facing-page translation of Epifanio de Moirans's "Servi Liberi" seu Naturalis Mancipiorum Libertatis Iusta Defensio". The events described in "Servi Liberi" occurred in Havana, Cuba toward the end of 1681 and the beginning of 1682. It was then that the author, de Moirans, a Frenchman from Burgundy, along with Francisco Jos?? de Jaca, a Spaniard from Aragon and fellow Capuchin, did what was most impossible and subversive at the time: he condemned the very institution of slavery. The only extant copy of "Servi Liberi" is in Seville s Archivo General de Indias, which, though formerly a stock exchange, became the official depository for Spanish colonial documents over two hundred years ago. "Servi Liberi" has survived because of the Archive; had it perished, we would have no knowledge of these events, no awareness of these campaigns, and no idea of how two Capuchins struggled with all the established political, economic, and religious interests of their time to change the widespread and destructive practice of slavery.

Written just before Simon's death, this book is a breathtaking odyssey of his adventures crossing the Arctic Sea in a sailboat; a nearly tragic scuba diving accident with his sons, and his direction of the Federal Energy Administration at the height of the oil embargo.
Customer Reviews:
A Noble, Extraordinary Life.......2004-03-01
William Simon's is an extraordinary lifestory, and reading his memoir, published posthumously this year following his death in 2000, was thoroughly enjoyable. Simon's life had so many incarnations -- prescient Wall Street trader, principled public servant (energy czar and treasury secretary), conservative intellectual, pathbreaking merchant banker, champion of the U.S. Olympic movement, philanthropist, intrepid adventurer, Eucharistic Minister -- that it's hard to fathom one person leading such an eclectic, richly diverse life.
Known for his sharp opinions while in public office, Simon is largely magnanimous in recounting his life experiences. For example, he declines to elaborate on the reasons for his falling out with a longtime colleague and business partner, saying only that he trusted someone he thought was his friend. He pulls no puches, however, in expressing outrage at wrongheaded government decisions, such as the 1989 FIRREA Act (which suddenly made struggling S&Ls insolvent), Pres. Carter's Olympic boycott (which accomplished little other than prompting Soviet retaliation four years later) and foolish government meddling in the oil market (rationing, price controls, etc. which largely created the 1970s energy "crisis").
The memoir offers several colorful, revealing anecdotes. For example, Simon's pointed counsel to Ronald Reagan, urging him to drop former Pres Ford from consideration for the Vice Presidency. (I never heard or read of this before; Lou Cannon makes no mention of it in his new biography of Reagan's pre-presidential years.) Also, Simon's confrontation -- nearly leading to blows -- with an inebriated Vice President Rockefeller. This is fascinating stuff.
Equally fascinating are the chapters on Simon's pioneering role in the use of Leverage Buyouts to restore underperforming companies to sound profitability. Simon eschewed hostile LBOs, preferring to work cooperatively with, and empowering, management, and deftly abandonded the business when it attracted a surfeit of "takeover artist" capital in the late 1980s.
Simon's separation from, and reconcilliation with, his wife of 40 years is particularly poignant, as is his ministry to indigent AIDs patients and other destitute people. The caring and compassion behind a gruff -- sometimes mercurial exterior -- is palpable.
William Simon led an amazing, noble life. Emulating such an extraordinary human being is beyond the reach of most of us. But thanks to this new book, we can at least read about and admire him. Highly recommended.

Book Description
This text and casebook is a research/theory based text that cites the theoretical foundations of sales management. It fits best in more rigorous undergraduate programs and MBA programs. This edition features the significant contribution of two new co-authors, John Tanner and Mark Johnston. This book will appeal to a variety of teaching approaches. Instructors who primarily emphasize the lecture-discussion approach will find ample material for either a one-quarter or a one-semester course in the chapters and end-of-chapter discussion questions. For those who prefer case-oriented instruction, we have included 32 cases. These cases can be found at the end of the three sections since they primarily emphasize issues discussed in a particular section. The last five cases in Section III are more encompassing and contain a variety of marketing and sales management issues. The book now has two fewer chapters making it more flexible for schools that wish to have more time to cover selling skills and/or wish to have more time for case analysis.
Customer Reviews:
A great insight on sales force management.......2000-12-30
While other books try to teach the selling process, this piece of art helps you understand all the issues underlying in a sales force area, it's administation, the relationship with pre and post sales areas and the way to succeed in a managing position. One of the best books I've read on this subject.
A must-have book for undergraduate sudents and teachers........2000-12-29
I teach in one of the finest schools of Mexico, MBA Marketing and Field Force management topics, and was really tired of looking for comprehensive, complete and reasonable readings that covers the most important areas of managing a Sales Force. Churchil is a must-have text for both, college and high level (superior / undergraduate) students, since it really takes you through every important aspect of the topic.

Book Description
Twelfth Night is one of the most accessible yet elusive of Shakespeare's plays. It has enjoyed enormous popularity in performance, but it continues to challenge students. It has experienced numerous revivals and has provoked some of the most brilliant critical responses from Shakespeare's critics. Written for students and general readers, this guide is a comprehensive introduction to Shakespeare's play. The volume begins with a look at the play's textual history. This is followed by an exploration of its historical and cultural contexts and its sources and analogues. The book next turns to Shakespeare's dramatic art and then examines his themes of identity, sexuality, and madness. The final chapters look at the critical response to the play and give special attention to the play's performance history. The guide closes with a bibliography.
Customer Reviews:
A guide to Shakespeare's most puzzling play.......2006-04-28
Twelfth Night is one of Shakespeare's many classics; yet the play remains the most puzzling of all. It's popular but challenging: thus the need for John R. Ford 's TWELFTH NIGHT: A GUIDE TO THE PLAY , which joins others in the 'Greenwood Guides to Shakespeare'. Plenty of other titles have offered critical analysis: what makes this one different is its inclusion of the play's textual history and changes, explanations of underlying history and influence, and a gathering of criticism and analogues under one cover. The inclusion of the sum of critical thinking about Twelfth Night makes A GUIDE TO THE PLAY an essential addition to any serious high school or college-level collection where Shakespeare's works are studied.

Customer Reviews:
Confusing.......2001-02-21
While readers who are familiar with the universe that these stories are set in might be thrilled with this book, I found it very hard to get into it. This is one of the first books that I read by Norton and had bought it mostly because one of my all time favorite author, Cherryh, was a contributing author. Unfortunately, I found the stories dry and not very engaging. As works of fantasy, they are average...I think that if I was more familiar with witch world, I would have enjoyed it more.
Riveting...a must for WW fans!.......1998-03-09
Boyer, Cherryh, Pierce and Tarr capture WW well in these stories set in Ms. Norton's beloved realm. Very satisfying for us who have been there from the beginning and a must for her fans, fans of the WW and genre followers alike. Worth looking for. Worth adding to your library!

The Definitive Autobiographical Experience!!.......2007-03-18
I cannot figure out which is more amazing and inspiring: the man, his films, his life or his autobiography.
Every autobiography will pale in comparison after you read this one. Frank's book should come with a
warning that he will open your mind, transform your relationship with films, and ultimatley find a place of permanent endearing love in your heart! Friends don't let friends go into the Light, without reading this book,
as I am sure, it is required reading in Heaven!
Frank's biggest fan, Vaishali, author of "You Are What You Love."
An Astounding Talent and an Astounding Life.......2004-04-12
From the opening chapter which describes the incredible saga of how this man (as a young child) and his poor Sicilian family managed to come to America, to the end of his inspiring life and his brilliant career when he suffered cluster headaches so severe he could barely function, but kept his head up, this book captivated me. Capra exemplifies the American Dream, where a poor immigrant can become anything he sets his mind to be. Especially significant is his pure and honest soul. This book is SO inspiring.
Straight from the Heart.......2002-01-08
Frank Capra's superb autobiography provides loads of fascinating information about the film industry during a thriving period, when he was one of filmdom's most popular and successful figures, as well as about the mindset of this intriguing man of accomplishment. What is refreshing, along with his basic candor, is that despite his enormous success he retains a humble and highly humane touch.
Some of the most humorous anecdotes of "Name Above the Title" involve madcap, always colorful Columbia boss Harry Cohn, who took his Gower Street studio from the ranks of "Poverty Row" to the that of a giant. Capra helped significantly with box office smashes such as "It Happened One Night", "Mr. Smith Goes to Washington","Lost Horizon" and "Meet John Doe." It took awhile, but the Capra film which has soared to top spot in the hearts and minds of the public was the 1946 release starring Jimmy Stewart, "It's a Wonderful Life." The star was so enthused about the story that he pitched it personally to Capra after driving over to his house. Capra relates the time that he begged Cohn not to drop a struggling young cartoonist from the Columbia payroll, predicting that he would be sorry. Capra was right as the cartoonist was a young, meek Iowa farm boy named Walt Disney.
One of Capra's great contributions was directing and producing the excellent World War Two documentary series "Why We Fight." He tells about being called into the office of Army Chief of Staff, General George C. Marshall, who asked him to undertake the project. "But I've never done a documentary!" a surprised Capra replied. Marshall pointed out that he had never run an army before either, and that the American way during the critical war period was for citizens to learn jobs with which they were previously unfamiliar. Capra saw Marshall's logic and the rest is history.
This autobiography is fascinating enough for the interesting information about Capra's life. What makes it even better is that you are reading the revelations of a good man who did his best to instill positive values into his films, and to help in his distinctive way to make America a better country.
Five Inspiring Words: It's a Frank Capra Book........2000-06-30
To begin with, several adjectives to describe this wonderful book: 1.) candid, 2.) inspiring, 3.) poetic, 4.) instructional, 5.) spiritual, 6.) humanitarian, 7.) humorous, 8.) compassionate, 9.) courageous. From what I gather, it took Capra approximately three years to write this book, and what book it is. To be honest, this book is perhaps one of the best pieces of work we might ever have about the legendary director, the course of the twentieth century, and the people who have helped shape the film industry. This book demystifies the often deified directors, actors, moguls that ruled Hollywood during the golden age, reminding us of the universal bonds of humanity that link us all to each other. In many ways, it reads like a Frank Capra movie -- life-affirming to the end. For the younger generation (X'ers and Y'ers) who might question the values of their fathers' generation, this book is a must read. Underline this fact several times because when Capra takes you into his fold and shares his world, it is an experience you won't likely forget. Most history books seem to be written with a detached sense of objectivity from an supposedly impartial historian. The results of such labor is often an uninspiring book that keeps the reader at arm's length from the fascinating history, often boring the reader to no end. No so with Capra's autobiography. Capra reminds the reader that people are still simply people, no matter what generation, no matter which occupation. There are always going to be saints, martyrs, bullies, intellectuals, clowns, idiots in every walk of life. Such an example can be seen when Capra served in World War II and was privy to a touching moment with the great Admiral Nimitz. The old war hero had just come back from seeing three thousand men he had sent off to war -- some of them now without limbs, others without faces, yet all of them saluting him and thanking him from the bottom of their hearts. Nimitz broke down and wept, his shoulders so burdened by the sadness of his men's suffering. Hitting his desk over and over again the Admiral cursed the war with ever fiber in his being. After a brief moment to recompose himself Nimitz thanked Capra for being in the same room... allowing one tortured soul to connect and draw strength from another. Personally, it is easy to find yourself laughing when he laughs and crying when he cries. Like all classic works of literature, this book is so fresh in content, that it inspires the reader to look into his/her own heart and find the beating pulse of humanity and to take pride in the fact that one such as Capra was able to do so much through his films. I look forward to reading this book again and again. And perhaps, others will agree and do likewise.
The Great Frank Capra.......1999-06-24
I have never read such a fascinating auto-biogrophy. Frank Capra is not just a brillent directer, but a surprisingly good writer. Though it took him more then three years to write, THE NAME ABOVE THE TITLE was sure worth his time, and yours.
The around six-hundred page book covers Capra's life from his childhood as a Sicilian imagrent living in Los Angles to his retirement from film in the early 1970's. Early on you discover how important family was to Mr.Capra, and the impact that his father, mother, and dozen brothers and sisters had on him. I was also surprised to learn that as a youth Frank loathed this country. The book goes on to tell about Franks work as a gage writer for silent films, and how when he first signed-on with Columbia, the studio was considerd a joke.
There a number of major themes throughout the book, among them the importance of family and friends, patriotism, the changes in the Hollywood system, and the importance of a good storie. One thing I particularly enjoyed was to learn about the many diverse friends that Capra had, among them Russian-born composer Dimitri Tiomkin, space-telescope name-sack Erwin Hubble, and even Ted Gusile (better knowen as DR. Suess).
This wonderful book is so many things, it is the storie of Capra's life, it is fifty years of Hollywood history, and the bible of Frank Capras philosophy on life. If you are interested in any of these things, then read this book.
