Lovely Large-Format Book of John Sexton's Earlier Works.......2003-03-15
Quiet Light is a large format book (12x13 inches) containing 51 duotone plates of John Sexton's photographs taken 1974-1988. The title refers to the naturally "quiet light" of dawn and sunset which provided the illumination for the photographs within. The photographs are mostly of the natural world and range in perspective from close-ups of plants to sweeping landscapes. Some of the photographs are excellent, some mediocre, but the collection really conveys a specific mood and gives the viewer a strong sense of the style and themes of John Sexton's work during this period of time.
The quality of the paper is very good. It is difficult for me to comment on the quality of the reproductions because I haven't seen the original prints of any of them. In looking at the plates closely, it seems to me that some shadow detail has probably been lost. That always seems to be the case in fine arts photography books.
I particularly appreciate the technical information that Mr. Sexton thoughtfully provides toward the back of the book. The type of camera, lens, filters, film, exposure, and development information are given for every photograph. This will answer all of those "how did he get that shot" questions that every photographer, casual or pro, will inevitably ask himself/herself.
A worthy addition to any collection of nature photography or fine arts black-and-white books. A great introduction to John Sexton's work. A nice synopsis of his work from this period.... And a fine choice of adornment for your coffee table as well.

what is unique about his work...beyond the technical expertise...is the newness of the work....most of the images avoid the cliches and thus fill a void in large format photograhpy...which has a tendency to become repetitive...many of the images are totally new to me, i think he did some work in finding unique material
Remarkable B&W photographs.......1997-03-05
John Sexton is a master--but you already knew that. His photographs show both a deep
technical understanding of the medium and an eye for visualization that I envy even more. Every time I open Quiet Light I want to rush out with my 4x5. That is; after I've turned the last page of this magnificent book. If you practice the Zone System, this volume is a must. If you do not, this book will make you want to. If you enjoy looking at photographs that make the hair on the back of your neck stand on end, this book is for you too.
Black and white photography at its best........1996-06-02
Quiet Light is a spectacular book of black and white
photographs. The images are superb and the reproduction
is extremely well done. "Quiet light" refers to the
very soft light found before sunrise and after sunset.
Such light requires long exposure and special technique.
Sexton masters this. The book is a "must" for anyone
who appreciates fine art black and white photography.

Fletcher continually creates delicious recipes that are easy to do in all her cookbooks (e.g., Fresh from the Farmer's Market); this book is no exception. Cauliflower, eggplant, leeks, squash all get a turn here, so there's something for everybody. I've yet to create one of these recipes that wasn't met with huzzahs, so get this book and start cooking! Fantastic.
my favorite cookbook.......2001-11-20
I've given this cookbook to just about everyone I know. It's fantastic. It's organized by type of vegetable, and so far I've loved every recipe I've tried. The recipe on the cover -- tomatoes with goat cheese and basil -- has become a standard quick recipe for me and some of my friends during the summer, when the tomatoes are good. The mushrooms and fried sage pasta is also particularly good. I happened to run into Janet Fletcher at a pasta shop in Berkeley, and I'm afraid I acted like a groupie, gushing about how I'd given this cookbook to all my friends. But she was very nice about it. :)
Pick what you Want, then Pick a Recipe!.......2000-06-12
This is a great twist on the typical pasta cookbook. It is arranged by vegetable so you choose what you want and then look for a recipie and you will most likely find one you want. The Fettuccine with Artichokes, Prosciutto and Cream has become one of my favorite recapies to make cause it is so yummy and so easy! All recipes from this book have come out great so far. Great pictures too!
Best simple pasta recipes I've found.......2000-01-12
The recipes in this book are artful and rely on fresh ingredients without being overly complex. My guests consistently love the dishes and the author makes it easy to stock the basics for most of the recipes. Great for veggie lovers too -- mostly meatless dishes. Highly recommended.
The most used cookbook I own........1999-10-03
I have made at least half of the recipes from this book, and have yet to come upon one that did not receive rave reviews from my guests.

Jacobean Tragedy explores the tensions between the disruptive energies of sex and seventeenth century social, cultural and political values with an exceptional frankness, and the plays collected in this volume demonstrate the genre at its most sinister and explicit. The Insatiate Countess (1610), by William Barksted and Lewis Machin from a draft by John Marston, is a study in obsessive nymphomania and the reprisals taken by the male establishment. The Maid's Tragedy (1611) by Francis Beaumont and John Fletcher, reveals dark sexual secrets at the heart of the royal court, and emphasizes the political instability which ensues their discovery. Thomas Middleton's The Maiden's Tragedy (1611) provides an overtly Christian dimension to the conflict between lust and chastity, and John Fletcher's The Tragedy of Valentinian (1614) is a chilling portrayal of rape as the exercise of absolute power. Each play raises difficult questions about conventional moral and social attitudes to sexuality which remain relevant today.

Oh my goodness! What a wonderful gruesome collection of early 17th century plays! Jacobean drama is conventionally characterized as "decadent," and this anthology seems to justify the appellation. How about nymphomania, necrophilia, incest, murder, poison, blackmail, adultery, and rape? Although the subject matter is sensational, these are also serious psychological studies, well-written and well-plotted dramas. These fascinating plays are not widely available, but they should be. Anybody interested in 17th century English drama and culture will enjoy these plays. The plays are especially provocative in their treatment of monarchy; the royal court is typically portrayed as deeply corrupted, tyrannous, and decadent. Amazingly, for an age of royal absolutism, these plays seem to justify regicide. David Lynch, more over, here come the Jacobean sex tragedies.
I agree with the comments of the previous reviewer that the editing leaves much to be desired. The use of endnotes instead of footnotes is horribly distracting. I finally just stopped using the notes. Most of the notes are unnecessary and add little to the understanding of the text. If you're familiar with reading Shakespeare, you can probably comprehend these texts without looking at the endnotes.
