ial Neruda" is a goldmine of beautiful pieces, and most anyone will be able to find a poem that appeals to them enough to learn by heart. "Oda al Libro (II)" is one of my favorites, and it has helped me learn and retain the meanings of several great words.
Side-by-side bilingual texts like this one also serve as terrific motivators for language learners because as we grow in skill and are able to read in both languages, we can evaluate the translators' work and notice where certain nuances and meanings are lost in the shift from one language to another. Being able to understand a writer like Neruda in his original language is a glorious treat!
an exquisite allure.......2006-05-22 Drawn into the appeal of Pablo Neruda through an art project, I
approached this collection of poems taped together and bound by
a red sleeve at a local bookstore. I was moreoverly surprised
at how entrancing and delicately eloquent Neruda's writing style
was--even transcribed from spanish to english. The editor, Mark
Eisner did a fantastic job with the translations, and I didn't
feel like I was succombing to "Kung-Fu movie" subtitles as I
would have expected. This collection brought Neruda's poetry to
a managable and palpable understanding, such as I needed to
thoroughly perceive it. Though Chile, Neruda's homeland, is, as
any other cultured region would be, variable to my own, it
continued to bring insights to my own observations of life--and
all the beauty and exquisite allure contained in it.
it is all in the title.......2006-01-16 As a former student of Spanish literature, I have always held a deep appreciation for the work of Pablo Neruda. I have often wished to share the beauty of his work with friends and family - yet many of them have found Neruda translations to be inaccessible. I have also found that many of the other translations are stilted or do not properly recreate the rhythm and imagery of the Spanish original.
The Essential Neruda combines an excellent overview of Neruda's work with accesible and faithful translation. Whether you are new to the poetry of Pablo Neruda or have already read every one of his works - the Essential Neruda will give you valuable insight into his art and an appreciation of cutting-edge poetry translation.
This book also launched a non-profit organization and on-line community dedicated to Neruda and his work.
Check out www.redpoppy.net to learn about contemporary Neruda translation and scholarship, Chilean politics and more.
It also shows how you can get involved with the legacy of Neruda.
Great Introduction to Neruda.......2006-01-03 If I were to introduce someone to the greatness of Neruda I would give them this book as it gives an insight into his life's poetry.

Customer Reviews:
Thank You, Mr. Ferlinghetti.......2006-03-31 I first read Lawrence Ferlinghetti's poem, "Constantly Risking Absurdity" when I was 26 years young. I am now 41 and I still read that poem to remind me that even though my body may be taking on the appearances of getting older, my mind, my spirit, and my soul are just as young as ever.
I believe we grow old not because of time, but what we do or don't do with our time. We let our beliefs become rigid, we let our attitudes harden, we forget what it was like to be flexible and youthful and optimistic about life.
This book opens the mind. It expands the heart. It flows through the soul like honey and lets the "imprisoned splendor" escape through the cracks of the entire psyche. I would suggest reading this book by candlelight with maybe some Lee Morgan or John Coltrane in the background.
It's a book of prayers written by a Beat Priest and every day I thank God that I came across that poem I mentioned earlier in this review it changed my life in a million ways known as well as unknown.
If you are looking for something to bring you to a place of youthful vigor, give this book a try. Remember it's never to late to have a great life.
Peace & Blessings
A distant man with a personal message.......2006-03-21 Ferlinghetti is strange in that he considers himself a man of the people, yet works in a field in which the common man wouldn't normally participate. He writes so that academics won't like him, and fans of bukowski or ginsberg won't necessarily like him. The only poet REMOTELY like him could possibly be Bob Hicok.
Ferlinghetti developed his own style of poetry that's (to paraphrase) not constrained by the limits of the poetic line. It's all over the place, in form and in content. This is his seminal work, and the modern version even contains the best from his previous: Pictures of the Gone World.
He has a sensibility for the turn of a phrase, as we see with "The poet's eye obscenely seeing" and "cast up / the heart flops over / gasping 'Love'. He is in tune with the alienation of the modern age, and although he's far from a "people person", his quiet insights have proven inspiring and invaluable.
His next-best work is probably "starting from san francisco", which contains my favorite poem, "overpopulation" (an oft-overlooked, but great piece of poetry to read aloud). This one, however, is a must-read if you're into a

A Photographic Treat.......2007-04-03 Desert to Dream is a remarkable accomplishment -- a stunning tapestry of images and words that appears in essence to be a mystery play. I am amazed at the visual, emotional and spiritual complexity of her work that evokes deep contemplation. The book is very well laid out and I like how the diptychs are paired, even in some instances where there is a b&w and color photo side by side. Traub's sense of style and composition is dynamic and goes way beyond the usual ways of seeing. Congratulations on such an extraordinary book.

Poor snapshots.......2007-02-13 Wow, what a dissapointment - it hardly captures the magic of Burning Man. With only a couple exceptions, the photos in this book are middling to poor. Most of the pictures of people are of the back of their heads. The pictures of art and vehicles are often framed poorly or feature distracting shadows. The night pictures are blurry and amateurish. There are a lot of great burning man photos out there (see the burning man website); I find it hard to believe this got published and even sanctioned with (a generic) blurb by Larry Harvey.
visually stunning.......2007-01-10 Having attended Burning Man twice (in 2003 and 2005), and having connected to the amazing experience that it represents for the mind and the body, I am glad to see a book that is capable of capturing most of the images that trigger our senses. Good any time of the day ... it's best alongside your breakfast, helping you carrying the 'burn every day' philosophy throughout your day and evening.
Desert to Dream: A Decade of Burning Man Photography.......2006-12-07 The photographs in Desert to Dream: A Decade of Burning Man Photography
by Barbara Traub convey the special and unique personality of the annual
Burning Man Festival. They also convey the humanity, sense of community
and the unique artistic sensibilities of the participants. The photographs
are excellent in their own right and are a sensitive mixture of color and
black and white. There are several pictures of nude women and men, which are real tributes to human beauty. Also, toward the end of the book, many of the photographs portray surrealistic images that only an expert photographer like Barbara Traub would be capable of. This book is well
worth the investment, not only for those interested in Burning Man, but also
those interested in photography that is spectacular.

A dream walking.......2005-01-11 A beautiful surrealist novel, this is the sort of thing that's so easy to do badly, and so difficult to do well. It doesn't have a plot so much as an underlying archetypal theme, that of Man pursuing the ideal & unattainable Feminine in all of Her ever-changing aspects; but it does have an ongoing narrative drive, one which unfolds in fluid prose, rich in imagery & emotional intensity. Ferlinghetti perfectly recreates the essence of a dream, which has its own logic & its own needs, and makes its own sort of deep sense. The reader has only to surrender to its flow & be carried along, with one image or scene yielding to another in a continuous surge of immediate experience & psychological surprise. Highly recommended!
just can't put my finger on it.......2003-07-21 When I looked at the cover of this book, I couldn't even begin to fathom what was inside of it. The story itself is so surreal that it wouldn't even be considered a story by some. The plot (if there is one) is so vauge that I couldn't identify it. And that's what makes ot good! I must read more Ferlenghetti. I have tried my hand at writing such a book, but with no sucess. The text is fresh, not at all dull. Don't try reading this while you're in your right mind, though, and not during the day, either. The scenes that the author creates are sort of harrowing, they linger in your mind, and they stick. Read it in small sections. It took me weeks, but it was worth it.
It is difficult to get used to Ferlenghetti's writing style, but once you're into it, it doesn't let go. It's all sort of like a dream, some parts a nightmare. The ending was hard to understand from my perspective, but it seems to sum everything up. I highly reccomend this book.
random pourings.......2001-11-10 totally agree with the first reviewer, many more people should be reading this book, expressing as it does a complete subjection to the writer's art and babbling about blowing up to fill a room. like breton perhaps ferlinghetti forgets about popular literary constraints and merely expresses himself in perfect sequences. remember philip quarles in Huxley's point counter point, he says that a good story could come out of one person's seemingly unmemorable journey from the bus stop next to his house and his front room. Ferlinghetti, like so many kids, spends these pages searching for the essence of the female, essentially. yes, read this book when drunk or tired, or both. or neither.
strange stuff but it all makes sense (maybe).......2000-03-02 it worries me that no one has written a review for this book yet. they say i'll be the first. i'm ordering this book through amazon, but i read it my first time many moons ago, back when i was reading "watt" by beckett, and a lot of other wierd stuff. maybe it was just a point in my life, but this book spoke to me. wacked out on whatever those crazy beats got whacked out on, consumed by passion and equally consumed by confusion, ranting and pouring it all out on the

a great collection.......2005-06-12 I had become very interested in French poetry but was not sure who to read that was more modern. I first heard of Prevert in my French text book. They had included some biographical information on Prevert and one of his poems for students to read due to its simplicity of language. This was the tip I was looking for, and I was very curious to read more of this poet--and I am glad I did!
I would compare Prevert to W.C. Williams in the sense that they both find the profound in the mundane. This is an ability that I greatly admire in a poet, and Prevert has the gift of being able to illuminate the beauty that passes us unnoticed at all times. If you are a long time lover of great poetry or are simply looking to expand your horizons you will not be disappointed with this book. Prevert and his poetry span the entire range of humanity--the young love him as well as the old, the academic as well as the average reader. He is accessable to all, and loved by all.
a wonderful little collection.......2000-05-31 This is a fantastic collection of poems. Ferlinghetti did a fabulous job translating these poems into English. Jacques Prevert is a greatly neglected French poet who spoke volumes with his verse. This bilingual edition is a great gift for any lover of poetry. Poems like Pater Noster and Flowers and Wreaths are beautiful verses. Prevert is simple in language but amazingly poignant at his best. He knew the value of directness. These poems are like little jewels of human wisdom. Human Effort, I Am As I Am, Song of The Jailer, etc. There are many highlights in this book. This often maligned, overlooked poet deserves to be reread today. Many who give this book a couple honest reads will probably be impressed by the sheer poetic wonder of this volume. I would state that because it is bilingual, students of the French language might also find value in finding the translations en face with the original. This is a great package all around.

The Buddha in the Poet.......2007-05-14 The new poems that begin this collection are wonderful; the voice is strong and sure with rich, fresh images and allusions that explode in all kinds of directions. the poems give me a chance to say, "Oh, I get that." or most of it.
I haven't gotten to the selected poems from all of his books, but I know it will be fun to read poems I haven't read in years.
This volume should be a must read for young rebels and writers; should be right up there on the shelf with On The Road and Howl
Total Bliss..........1998-12-22 This collection of poems from Ferlinghetti opens the mind due to it's variation of poems from over the years. His style has remained the same yet we see a different side of Ferlinghetti with each era of poems. This was very enjoyable and I recommend it highly.
astonishing.......1997-11-12 Some of these poems are really really good! Ferlinghetti has great imagination, humor, moments of enlightenment or shall i just say that his poems are really fresh and astonishingly real and immediate? From poems about underwear to poems about Mattisse art exhibits, this collection is a must have for poetry lovers!
I'd also recommend Gregory Corso's poetry collections for those of you who are interested.
This compilation is fantastic!.......1997-01-09 I bought this book after seeing Ferlinghetti speak at my
school in New Hampshire. He was fantastic, and his book is
even more so.
Buy it!

Book Description
"The more I make love, the more I want revolution; the more I make revolution, the more I want to make love." In Paris, in May of 1968, revolution, and love are very much in the air. The barricades are going up, the students of the Sorbonne are taking to streets alive with the graffiti of revolt, and the Odeon is ablaze with speechmaking.
For Annie, a young American painter, and Julian, her Portuguese lover, a banker and anarchist, the events of that Paris spring form the backdrop against which their love affair is played. Annie sees the world through an artist's eyes; she is reckless in her passions, wanting and needing love with other people. There is none of this fanciful nonsense for Julian, an anarchist disdainful of the entire human race, who thinks even the enragé students storming the streets of Paris with there posters proclaiming "open the windows of your heart" and "revolution is the ectsasy of history" to be hopelessly naïve and sheeplike. Ferlinghetti charts the progress of love unfolding against those heady and momentous days when the pampered children of the bourgeoisie tried to find common cause with workers who despised them, "when Julian and Annie were in the heat of their love and reason."
Love in the Days of Rage is a work of lyricism and commitment, painting and politics, passion and intellect-a work to set beside the great expatriate novels of earlier generations.

. Every job has it's ups and downs. They get monotonous and draining. Worrying about money [stinks], so you compromise nearly everything up to and including you're very being. Hank likes being "commercial" because big corporations pay well and promptly. Movies and commercials are money on the table. It's easy and if he doesn't take it someone else will.
Biafra is one man publicity stunt show. Running for mayor(truly funny and creative). Including a poster of sodomy in records and calling it artistic freedom under the holy grail of free speech. I don't know anyone who buys a record expecting or wanting such a thing. The poster is funny but is by all definitions pornographic. Not everyone has a dirty sense of humor. Jello fought and lost for our right to do such silly things. Now he worries about his company's future as a b-music distributer especialy with the rise of this internet file sharing thingy (more punk than the whole punk movement combined). He's made a living as a paranoid alarmist worrying people to death.
Bottom line, everyone's replacable, independent. Past succes doesn't guarantee future success, but that's who gets better odds. Like it or not. Whether your stuff has critical mass approval or not. Carrying the torch will get you burned both up and out. These guys are one trick ponies branching off into other areas. A good perspective on 2 long winded spotlight hogs. Their music speaks or itself. JB's album with no means no and doa are worth buying or downloading. Black Flag is good clean fun. RESEARCH/VSEARCH always put out good stuff.
Real Conversations: an envigorating and inspiring book!.......2002-04-29 I've been familiar with Biafra/Rollins/Childish and Ferlinghetti for a long time, but can't say I'm a huge fan of any of the four, but in reading through these interviews, I have a whole new respect for all of them. Vale talks about so many issues of political importance, artistic integrity, life, and everything with them. What comes through is not esoteric or academic, not something only appealing to punks or poets, but a feeling of being alive. All four are very smart, funny, engaging and interesting individuals and Vale really knows how to bring out their personalities. This is like a bible of common sense from 4 great prophets of the eternal underground. If you yearn to be creative and find your own happiness outside of the constraints of a 9-5 job and mainstream culture, this book will hopefully be an inspiration to you. It's also refreshing to hear people talking about important political and philosophical issues in a way that makes you believe that you can be involved and help make culture and live how you want. We also glimpse into their lives outside of the public eye through some wonderful storytelling. Vale helps to put the nail in the coffin of the "dumb punk" notion: these guys are geniuses. You need this book!
A great read for these times.......2001-10-18 [paragraph missing]
Essentially, the best thing about "Real Conversations No. 1" is that it's just that -- a good chunk of honest dialogue between a guy and four other guys who sound like they're pretty close friends with him, talking about what's on their minds and in their lives (both theirs and his) in ways that are sometimes entertaining, sometimes thought-provoking and sometimes even illuminating. And, yes, at least two of the people talking in this book have figured somewhat prominently in the entertainment and pop culture landscapes for the past few years. But guess what? They actually say stuff that doesn't totally sound like part of their act! Henry Rollins, for all the macho, stoic bluster that he gives off, turns out to be pretty funny and down-to-earth, as well as enthusiastic to the point of geekdom when it comes to archiving bootlegs of bands that he admires and/or played with. Jello Biafra's comments are obviously more political and exhibitionist, but he does make light of how he got that way in the first place, and how he was just as inspired by other people in the anti-WTO protests in Seattle as they were by him. Besides that, the most wholly "inspirational" words probably come from Billy Childish, who advocates "doing it yourself" (and "thinking and taking responsibility for yourself" as well) not just as a moral or even as a craft, but as something that fits into enjoying the simple fact that you're alive. And Lawrence Ferlinghetti comes off almost as the wise grandfatherly figure who has a wealth of stories to tell about the past but knows pretty clearly about what the future entails.
But really, the total effect of all these conversations for me wasn't so much hero worship or a privileged glimpse into the workings of complicated minds. It was more the idea that, if I ever had the chance, I'd wanna hang out with these people and talk about some of this stuff with them myself. (Of course, in some ways, I'm not sure that I could even get a word in edgewise, but that's another matter.) I guess that's one of my personal reasons for being glad that I bought this book directly from Re/Search in San Francisco, almost beyond the whole deal of supporting the independents: When I called the place up to inquire about my order right after the attacks happened, I thought at first that I'd gotten a particularly thoughtful and conversational assistant who sounded vaguely like Jello Biafra on the phone. It turned out to be Vale himself, and we talked for maybe half an hour about the attacks, how they'd played out on CNN and the likelihood that any chance for progressive politics was dead now. He seemed as interested in what I had to say as I was in what he had, and I think it probably helped get us both out of the shell-shock and thinking clearly again.
So maybe some of these good things still aren't quite out of reach yet. Or, if they are, then maybe now we'll scramble a bit more to get hold of them again.

Kick written warmth exuding joy.......2000-06-03 Man oh Man oh Man... this book is WORTH the read and probably worth whatever Amazon's asking for it. It's a thrown down literary jump kick and thinking about Ferlingetti as the "Up Beat" is a good way to describe the writing style. Ginsberg liked to scratch along the belly of the humanistic machine but sweet Lawrence writes poetry (the best of which i think this book encapsulates) that swings around the golden side of our existance. i borrowed this book for awhile and would wake up and read a bit of it and everything became a little clearer, a little sweeter and little bit more tantalizingly beautiful. this book has the potential to make you hungrier for things and is an easy read in terms of poetry. Oh man oh man oh man...
populist vistas.......2000-04-01 Until the publication of A Far Rockaway of the Heart, this collection (consisting of 2 books published in the late seventies) was by far my favourite collection by this sometimes publisher, sometimes poet. It includes a number of his greatest poems, such as "populist manifesto," "the old italians dying" & "director of alienation". Although Ferlinghetti may not be one of America's greatest postwar poets, there is a wonderful accessablity to his verse. Indeed a populist poet & worthy of that station & a poet who sometimes does not get the credit his work deserves (in the wake of recent anthologies such as Rothenberg and Jorris' Poems for the Millenium and Messerli's From the Other Side of the Century).
