4 out of 5 stars Mixed, but useful overall.......2003-11-09

Girl-specific lists are always up for extra criticism, and this is no different. The authors do a great job of discussing their criteria, and for me there's a gap between theirs and mine. I want great books, that also are positive for girls. Theirs seems to possibly be books that are positive for girls, but except for that aren't that great. I'd rather a smaller, more selective list.

My problems with this specific book include:

The age groupings - they have 8yrs - 11yrs old, and then 12 & up. I like the middle school grouping better - 11 is much more similar to 12 than 8 is to 10, in my perspective.

Also I dislike that each book stands alone in their descriptions - there may be two books listed my an author, but neither listing will give a clue about that. I prefer where other books by that author are within a listing.

Different genre's are thrown together within each age group, and genre is not identified in the heading info. So it is not possible to skim for fiction only for instance (although that is what most selections are).

The basic info: author, illustrator, year, edition is laid-out in a way that takes 4 lines per book, which is a waste of space.

The descriptions are full, but again it often felt like I was being sold or encouraged to read it. I don't want encouragement, I want assessment/criticism.

Finally, there are the barest of indexes: one has title, author and contributor; the other has subject.

I do like the contributor items: in which a famous woman comments on her favorite books.

So it is certainly useful, and could also be even better in later editions!

5 out of 5 stars A Must for your book shelf.......2001-06-05

This is a carefully constructed resource of books about and for girls. While it includes recommendations on the well known..."Little Women", "Anne of Green Gables" and "Harriet the Spy", it also includes recommendations on unusual, clever and hard to find books such as Jan Andrews' "Very Last First Time" amd Jacqueline Dembar Greene's "Out of Many Waters".

In addition to the typical one paragraph summaries of the books, the authors have interviewed dozens of prominent accomplished American women about their favorite childhood books. Supreme Court Justice Sandra Day O'Connor particularly enjoyed the "Book of Knowledge",and author, Paula Danziger, read Nancy Drew books and "Little Women".

This is the most thoughtful book of its kind. It reviews 450 books by age and reading level. My daughter and I have discovered wonderful books we would never have found on our own. Be prepared to use your library, well as used book sales and services to find some of the great books.

The authors have clearly put a great deal of thought and effort into best guide of books about and for girls. If you are the sharing the adventure of reading with a girl, this is a must for your book shelf.

      Highly recommended

5 out of 5 stars Once Upon a Heroine: 400 Books for Girls to Love.......2000-06-30

I can't tell you how excited I am to have found this book. As a mother of a 2 1/2 year old little girl, I am thrilled that I will have found a tool in which to seek out books that will help build her self esteem, self confidence and self assurance. It'll accompany me on our many trips to the library. The books listed within, are phenomenal. And best of all, it'll carry her from toddler to teenage! It's a must have!

5 out of 5 stars Essential guide for thoughtful readers.......2000-06-27

As the mother of three daughters, I was delighted to discover this meaningful guide to good books for girls. Literature that empowers and inspires a young girl is one more way to launch confident, successful children into an increasingly challenging world. This book makes that concern much more effective and the choices more clearly directed. I especially like the sidebars of high-profile women who reveal their favorite titles from girlhood. It's amazing to see how a simple picture book as a child can have such a radical and lasting effect on an individual. There is guidance and inspiration aplenty in here...and lots to think and talk about at the dinner table, too.

In an era in which art is increasingly dictated by marketers, and publishers and filmmakers don't seem to make a move without first consulting focus groups, poetry might seem, at first, a bit superfluous. It's "difficult," for one thing, subject to many interpretations; it's also deeply personal, unsuited to creation by committee. So what possible use does the modern world have for poetry? Muriel Rukeyser answers this question in The Life of Poetry, a book that just keeps coming back in time for each new generation. First published in 1949, it was reissued in 1974 and returns to print again in 1997, courtesy of Paris Press. Rukeyser's presents many definitions of poetry: it is an exchange of energy, a record of the emotional meaning of every moment, a concentration of universal joys and sorrows. It is a thing "in which we may live and which will save us."

Rukeyser, herself a poet, was a woman who understood that poetry alone was not enough to save the world. An activist on behalf of West Virginia coal miners and later censored South Korean writers, Rukeyser had an intimate understanding of the place principle and action occupy in saving the world. But the world needs a soul as well as a mind and a will, and for Rukeyser, poetry fills that role. The Life of Poetry is about poetry, but within that realm fall subjects as varied as musicals; war; and the works of Whitman, Dickinson, and Lorca, among others. Rukeyser died in 1980, but her fierce intelligence and great heart live on in this marvelous meditation on the universal applications of poetry.

                  Book Description

Observing that poetry is a natural part of our pastimes and rituals, Rukeyser opposes elitist attitudes and confronts Americans' fear of feeling. Multicultural and interdisciplinary, this volume makes an irrefutable case for the centrality of poetry in American life.

"The Life of Poetry is not easy reading, nor was it intended to be. At times its range may seem nervously scattering, and the lyric prose takes on a heavy supersaturation. Nonetheless, one must admire, even 17 years posthumously, a brilliant mind fiercely at work."-Liz Rosenberg, The New York Times Book Review

                  <B>Excerpt,/B>

Now poetry, at this moment, stands in curious relationship to our acceptance of life and our way of living.

The resistance to poetry is an active force in American life.... Anyone dealing with poetry and the love of poetry must deal, then, with the hatred of poetry, and perhaps even more with the indifference which is driven toward the center. It comes through as boredom, as name?calling, as the traditional attitude of the last hundred years which has chalked in the portrait of the poet as he is known to this society, which, as Herbert Read says, "does not challenge poetry in principle-it merely treats it with ignorance, indifference and unconscious cruelty."

Poetry is foreign to us, we do not let it enter our daily lives. Do you remember the poems of your early childhood-the far rhymes and games of the beginning to which you called the rhythms, the little songs to which you woke and went to sleep?

                  Yes, we remember them.

But since childhood, to many of us poetry has become a matter of distaste. The speaking of poetry is one thing: one of the qualifications listed for an announcer on a great network, among "good voice" and "correct pronunciation," is the "ability to read and interpret poetry." The other side is told conclusively in a letter sent ninety years ago by the wife of the author of Moby?Dick. Mrs. Melville said to her mother-"Herman has taken to writing poetry. You need not tell anyone, for you know how such things get around."
