3 out of 5 stars It's what the title says..........2007-05-10

It's an introduction to audiology. If you're new to the discipline, then this is a pretty good starting point. However, it's not detailed enough for postgrad or research. For that I'd buy Katz's Handbook of Clinical Audiology or Roeser's Audiology Diagnosis.

5 out of 5 stars GREAT.......2006-02-22

My order got here on the day specified when I ordered it. It was packaged great and everything was there that was supposed to be. SPEEDY and reliable.

5 out of 5 stars Introduction to audiology.......2006-02-08

I just want to say that this text book is really easy to understand as well as to read. If some kind of uncertainty arises you can always refer to the CD that it comes with and it will help you understand the material in a more efficient and concrete way. I am happy with the text and I can now understand the science behind the hearing mechanism. I would recommend this text for the begginers with an interest to specialize in hearing and/or speech sciences.

5 out of 5 stars A great start..............2002-02-21

I have a BS in Audiology and am going back for my Au.D -- and this book is excellent in bringing me back up to speed on the materials I haven't touched in nearly 10 years. It is concise (definitely not wordy) and hits all the basics, starting from the history of hearing checks to today's detailed technological miracles of testing. Could have a bit more of the anatomy, but other than that, it really is a great start for those wanting to enter the field of Audiology.

5 out of 5 stars This book delivers its title.......2001-12-27

As an intro book, I found it extremely useful and packed with necessary information. Whoever said there was too much information to be found in this book is completely off the mark, although, this book is probably best suited to those who are pursuing a career in this field. The CD-ROM could have been more fully developed...

      Book Description

In addition to countless millions of conventional film cameras, digital cameras will be found in one out of every two American households this year. This authoritative guide provides a handy, all-in-one reference for photographers using either medium (or both), combining the practical know-how of more than 50 outstanding professional photographers with National Geographic's world-renowned tradition of excellence and expertise.

The Ultimate Field Guide to Photography presents ten easy-to-read chapters exploring every aspect of the digital revolution. With straightforward explanations of both simple, all-but-foolproof equipment like inexpensive autofocus point-and-shoot cameras and of sophisticated, megapixel single lens reflex units boasting interchangeable lenses. It also covers important accessories; provides advice of all kinds, from key facts and basic tips for beginners to advanced techniques for skilled amateurs; and addresses the essentials of PhotoShop editing, scanning and printing, effective archiving, and more. Along with digital information, there's also plenty of material on traditional film, from old techniques to helpful sidebars on when to use film rather than digital.

Throughout the book dozens of well-known, highly accomplished photographers showcase some of their most famous shots and share both the human stories behind them and the specific technical details of their creation. This wonderful mix of vivid examples and vital nuts-and-bolts information makes The Ultimate Field Guide to Photography a uniquely useful, indispensable reference for photographers everywhere.

4 out of 5 stars Good basic book for beginners.......2007-06-17

This is a very good, basic book for beginners. However, it also offers something for advanced amateurs. Even if your skills are advanced, you'll get enough out of it for it to be worth the price.

3 out of 5 stars The guide falls short on photographic techniques..........2007-02-08

The book is good but not as good as previous editions. It lacks the chapters for photographic techniques that the last field guide had. I liked that there is information for the digital darkroom but I wanted more information on how to shoot different activities.

      Book Description

Moments after finishing a six-month sentence in the Roanoke jail for a crime he might not have committed, Baptist minister Joel King is served some unwelcome papers. His wife wants a divorce, and the teenage vixen everyone believes he seduced is suing him for five million dollars.

Holding on to his faith with a white-knuckle grip, Joel accepts a ride out west with Edmund Brooks, a member of his former flock who has some Commandment-challenging ideas about helping Joel help himself. From the author the New York Times Magazine called “the drinking man’s John Grisham,” Plain Heathen Mischief ranges from the cross to the double cross, from Virginia to Las Vegas, from courtrooms to trout streams, as Martin Clark follows his Job-like hero through dubious choices and high-dollar insurance scams to a redemption no reader could possibly predict.

      4 out of 5 stars Umm, that's Missoula MONTANA!, folks . ........2007-06-22

Set predominantly in the Big Sky country, my state of birth, "Plain Heathen Mischief" is a most interesting morality play. Are there shades of grey? Or is anything beyond the straight and narrow path just plain heathen mischief, as the protagonist's old professor (who he used to call Dr. Brimstone) used to say? Often quite unlikeable, Joel King nonetheless does what he does with a consistent desire to do whatever it is he is doing for the greater good. With often misplaced loyalty - and with the burden of being seen as a child molester by the law enforcement community, even if the young woman who he is accused of having sex with was 17 and even if she was the aggressor - he fumbles along, straying farther and farther away from his beginning point as a Baptist preacher. With his sister Sophie - who is often earthy to the point of vulgarity - to act as a foil to his prudery, I found myself liking this book despite myself. Not knowing Missoula very well, I can't tell if the landscape was described very well or not - maybe a native Missoulan can step up and tell us? But Montana winters were definitely described to a "T" - Brrrrr! Recommend from me for anyone looking for something a little different to pass the time.

4 out of 5 stars What else could happen?.......2005-12-15

This is definitely the story of Job. I couldn't put the book down once I started it, but I kept thinking "how can this guy be so gulible?" As usual, I got into the characters and Joel (Job?) was someone I felt for. When I hear myself saying to a character, "don't do it!", I know I'm into the book. His sister, Sophie, was remarkably believable in her no-nonsense, out-of-patience take on life. Of course, if I had a brother like Joel, I'd be the same way. What a fun read. This would a good book for discussion in a book club.

3 out of 5 stars Great story, great characters... but the dialogue?.......2005-08-05

I'm willing to suspend a fair amount of disbelief when reading a novel: I know that few authors can accurately reflect human speech in their narratives, and often we wouldn't enjoy novels that did. In Plain Heathen Mischief, though, I couldn't do it. Main character Joel King is interesting, and his attitudinal shifts only seem slightly pat, but basically all of his dialogue (and others) is a series of competing monologues. More people speak seven sentences at once, without interruption, full of clever metaphors and snappiness, than I've ever met.

This is a significant negative in what otherwise is a fine caper novel, with some great turns and fun character development.

I'll certainly read another Clark novel - I enjoyed reading most of this - but I was exasperated by the end. Talk like a normal person!

      2 out of 5 stars A Step Back.......2005-07-06

I will try to be as fair as possible in this review because I really like Martin Clark's writing, and I know he reads these reviews. First the good: Clark has matured exponentially in his grasp of the English language since his first book, "The Many Aspects of Mobile Home Living." This is a beautifully written book. His phrases are just right and often startling in their artistry. I'm rather envious that a judge has attained such a high literary level. However, the main weakness of this novel is the protagonist, Joel King. He's simply a flat, dull character. I found myself never really caring about him or his moral dilemmas. And his passivity was nettlesome. This was disappointing to me because the characters in "Mobile Home" are very rich, complex, real, and downright funny. While there are spiritual themes in "Mobile Home," there are more religious ones in "Plain Heathen Mischief." Christians should respond well to this novel. "Heathens" may find it overbearing. I'm still a fan of Mr. Clark, and I will read his third novel. I hope he returns to the characterization that made him a star.

5 out of 5 stars Suspend Your Disbelief.......2005-07-01

What a fabulous ride this book is. Beautifully written, dialog that absolutely sizzles. This isn't an "inspirational" novel. No God beams or angels with flapping wings appear to hand Joel King a Hollywood-style redemption. Instead this book is filled with outstanding description, emotions, and characters that are at once poignant and so goofy and hilarious, they jump right off the pages. Sa'ad X. Sa'ad and Edmund made me think of a Johnnie Cochran knockoff and Cosmo Kramer. I hope Martin Clark is working on his next book because he's got a sale here.

      Book Description

Medicine and the media exist in a unique symbiosis. Increasingly, health-care consumers turn to media sources—from news reports to Web sites to tv shows—for information about diseases, treatments, pharmacology, and important health issues. And just as the media scour the medical terrain for news stories and plot lines, those in the health-care industry use the media to publicize legitimate stories and advance particular agendas. The essays in Cultural Sutures delineate this deeply collaborative process by scrutinizing a broad range of interconnections between medicine and the media in print journalism, advertisements, fiction films, television shows, documentaries, and computer technology. <BR><BR>In this volume, scholars of cinema studies, philosophy, English, sociology, health-care education, women&rsquo;s studies, bioethics, and other fields demonstrate how the world of medicine engages and permeates the media that surround us. Whether examining the press coverage of the Jack Kevorkian&ndash;euthanasia controversy; pondering questions about accessibility, accountability, and professionalism raised by such films as Awakenings, The Doctor, and Lorenzo&rsquo;s Oil; analyzing the depiction of doctors, patients, and medicine on E.R. and Chicago Hope; or considering the ways in which digital technologies have redefined the medical body, these essays are consistently illuminating and provocative.<BR><BR>Contributors. This collection of wide-ranging and thoughtful essays is a wonderful resource for anyone doing research or teaching in this area. I particularly liked the essay on Margaret Sanger and her short propaganda film career, a valuable contribution to film scholarship and women's history. Friedman has assembled a remarkable group of contributors; this volume is much needed and will not disappoint.

It's great if you believe a higher, supernatural power watches every step you take and actually cares what you do. It's also great for mimes, you can make some damn funny impersonations too.

        Book Description

Some of the most significant figures in evangelical theology explore the traditional view of the doctrine of salvation and its impact on evangelism in this age. Beginning with the doctrine of God as the author of salvation, pressing issues such as the exclusivity of the gospel and modern evangelism strategies, are examined. It's a forceful, clear presentation of how to stay true to biblical doctrines and faithful to the Great Commission in postmodern times.

1 out of 5 stars Evangelicals Who Believe In Calvinism!!!!!!!!!!.......2000-08-26

Given the present theological dynamics surrounding queries into the nature of God and human destiny, it saddens me to encounter Christian thinkers who are determined (no pun intended)to retreat into the fetid bowels of a tired, stale Reformed Weltanschauung instead of bravely engaging the challenges presented to dogmatics and hermeneutics as we approach the new century. What is lacking in these essays is the belief in a personal deity who can transcend our expectations (cf. Deut. 23 and Isaiah 56) - even our expectations regarding the extent of God's saving activity - and whose mercy can defeat our most entrenched theological prognostications! Viva la grace!

5 out of 5 stars Evangelicals Who Believe in God!.......2000-01-23

Edited by a long-respected OT theologian and a rising-star young theologian, this volume is a welcome tool for pastors and laypersons perplexed by the growing horde of "evangelicals" seeking to redefine the doctrines of God and salvation. The contributors (Carl Henry, R. Albert Mohler, D. A. Carson, et al) are unabashed in their commitment to a biblically-robust classical evangelical theology. Thornbury's concluding article contributes much to this discussion by joining his critique of "post-conservative" evangelicalism with a self-critical analysis of the theological reductionism found in some sectors of traditionalist evangelicalism. The shelf of every evangelical pastor and church leader should make room for this volume.

        5 out of 5 stars Refreshing.......2007-04-10

I uedd this text for an Art History class and it was not only useful and insightful, but also intriguing and well-organized. After having so many dry texts that are all fact, no fun, this was a refreshing change. It still had all the fact of a text book, but presented in a much more entertining and useful manner. I just wish all Art History texts were as easy to read while still being as informative

5 out of 5 stars An excellent introduction to Leonardo .......2005-01-09

This work provides a good introduction to the fascinating subject of Leonardo and his creative genius. Clark writes with elegance and insight about the whole span of Leonardo's career. He focuses on the drawings and provides the reader with an understanding of Leonardo's technical and artistic accomplishment. Clark is also reserved in his claims of understanding the mystery of Leonardo's personality and human relation.
Like Leonardo in his inventions Clark does not supply the full and final detail that gives the complete picture. His work is a fascinating introduction which however gives a basic understanding of the subject.

5 out of 5 stars The eternal genius.......2003-02-24

Kenneth Clark gives an unpropogating look at Da Vinci. All too often Leonardo's name has been attached to support a variety of causes of this or that nature. Being, seemingly, irreligious and unphilosophic while being the quintessential Renassaince Man. His name is often used as a mascot to justify the ideals of this or that group of whatever. He was clearly an animal rights lover, possibly a closet Franciscan, in all probability a homosexual (although not much of an activist). Leonardo was into his thoughts and had little patience for something that was already complete in his mind. He left scores of unfinished works, and minons of angry patrons - contrary to Bornstin's book that Leonardo was in constant search of patrons - Clark says he had many unhappy patrons. Leonardo was an animal lover who hated violence (although he designed armaments of various sorts). His depth of religious devotion could be argued, but he was not irreverant, as some have claimed. Leonardo was rather Franciscan and had a fondness for animals and individuality. He was free and valued his own individualism. Other than Da Vinci's notebooks nothing much authentic comes down to us. Every other work of Leonardo has been severally retouched or destroyed, what there is left of Leonardo's work is highly speculative - what bit is in his hand ect. Clark gives a healthy, vibrant, nonproselytizing look at a genius - something anyone might find interesting.

5 out of 5 stars The best introduction to Leonardo & a compelling read.......2003-01-27

Kenneth Clark's book is probably the best available introduction to Leonardo da Vinci. It is both a good biography and an insightful analysis of Leonardo's art and artistic career. The text is appropriate for both laymen and students of art history. Clark's writing is concise and extremely engaging (to the point where I would recommend reading this book for fun), but it is also intelligent and very informative, with a clear thesis that ties the vast body of matieral covered together into an easily comprehensible package. This book is slightly out of date now, but Martin Kemp's introduction and revision help to ammend for that. I particularly recommend this most recent edition as it is well-illustrated.

        5 out of 5 stars "CHILD'S BOOK"?.......2002-10-13

This is the best book available in English on Leonardo da Vinci. True, the book was first published several decades ago, but the art historian Martin Kemp has added footnotes that bring the text up to date. Kenneth Clark made a tremendous contribution to the study of Leonardo da Vinci with this book - Science and Technology Museum notwithstanding!!!!
