Follow the progress of a hungry little caterpillar as he eats until he is full and forms a cocoon around himself and goes to sleep.
Amazon.com Reviews
"In the light of the moon a little egg lay on a leaf." So begins Eric Carle's modern classic, The Very Hungry Caterpillar. More than 12 million copies of this book have been sold in its original, full-sized edition, and the beloved tale of science and gluttony has been translated into 20 languages. This five-by-four-inch miniature edition is truly tiny, with tiny type, but it is a nice size for small hands to hold and flip through the pictures. Despite its diminished state, the book is complete in every detail, following the ravenous caterpillar's path as he eats his way through one apple (and the pages of the book itself) on Monday, two pears on Tuesday, three plums on Wednesday, and so on, through cherry pie and sausage--until he is really fat and has a stomachache. And no doubt you know what happens next! Kids love butterfly metamorphosis stories, and this popular favorite teaches counting and the days of the week, too. A fun gift package for caterpillar fans. (Baby to preschool) --Karin Snelson
Customer Reviews:
Great story - inappropriate illustrations.......2007-06-16
For a child under 3 the illustrations are too abstract. For example the egg on a leaf looks like nothing! A young child needs clearer, more vivid illustrations. My baby (1 year) loves the pictures in her other books but so far, this book is good only for chewing! With the exception of the Saturday diet (icecream, cake, salami etc). I'm hopeful that when she gets older she'll enjoy the book more.
The Fabulous Eric Carle -- essential for every home with children!.......2007-06-02
We love this book- and ALL of his books!! When children are read to daily, they learn to love reading. And there's usually a life lesson to be learned in these sweet little books (like eating too much cake and candy can give you a TUMMY ACHE!) If you can find the LARGE size board book get it- they're fabulous keepsakes. Perfect gifts for any child, and a perfect tradition in your own home and family!
Real joy.......2007-05-24
Eric Carle is the favorite author for me and my daughter. His illustrations are lovely and just perfect for the stories. I enjoy reading his books to my child again and again. It is a real joy for a parent.
This is very simple reading about a caterpillar who eats throughout a whole week. Children love the brightly colored pictures on each page and repetitive phrases in this book. This book belongs to each child's household. For a little older kids I highly recommend Why Some Cats are Rascals, Book 1. Check also Love You Forever, Corduroy, The Giving Tree
Great book.......2007-05-23
This is a very cute book and we have other books from Mr. Carle.
Home library essential.......2007-05-13
This book belongs in every home library. And it must be the board book, as there are many little holes in the pages that little fingers MUST be put into. We always give this as a gift to first time parents.
The story is a great intro to the natural world as well as counting and identifying many foods. THe story has so much to teach! The art work is fascinating as well! Check out Eric Carle's other books as well. You are sure to find many more to love.

Brown Bear, Brown Bear, What Do You See?
Amazon.com
The gentle rhyming and gorgeous, tissue-paper collage illustrations in this classic picture book make it a dog-eared favorite on many children's bookshelves. On each page, we meet a new animal who nudges us onward to discover which creature will show up next: "Blue Horse, Blue Horse, What do you see? I see a green frog looking at me." This pattern is repeated over and over, until the pre-reader can chime in with the reader, easily predicting the next rhyme. One thing readers might not predict, however, is just what kinds of funny characters will make an appearance at the denouement! Children on the verge of reading learn best with plenty of identifiable images and rhythmic repetition. Eric Carle's good-humored style and colorful, bold illustrations (like those in The Very Hungry Caterpillar, The Grouchy Ladybug, and Have You Seen My Cat?) have earned him a prominent place in the children's book hall of fame. (Baby to Preschool) --Emilie Coulter

Must Have for Your Eric Carle Collection.......2007-06-19
Definitely one of our favorites, up there with Very Hungry Caterpillar.
My daughter has it memorized..........2007-06-18
...and she loves this book!! Started reading this to her at around 2, and she still likes it. HI FIVE to the editor for making the illustration changes so that all children could relate to it. This had a huge impact on me as I would have passed on it. Thanks again, it's a classic. :)
We *love* Eric Carle- I see a teacher looking at me...........2007-06-02
What's not to love? Every child needs lots of Eric Carle books- we were able to find these basics in large size board book, and they still read them even in his kindergarten class (he has a fabulous teacher, but I presume they all utilize them!). We think kids need reading to every day from the time they're born or so- and these fun, short, colorful books keep their attention and help them learn to enjoy reading and learning!
A charming book for very young children.......2007-05-30
The way the book is structured as a conversation invites the child's active participation in the story. The repetition in the language is a delight for very young children. A wonderful book for children who are just discovering the charm of books.
Preschooler & toddler love this book.......2007-05-26
My preschooler loves to "read" this book (he has it memorized) to his little brother. It's not the most exciting book to read as a parent, but the kids love the repetition.

Customer Reviews:
Only the brave need to do the animal sounds..........2007-06-05
Another Eric Carle classic, also best in board book for those young "readers" who still like to put their reading material in their mouths. This book is best when read aloud by a grandparent or other visitor unfamiliar with text ~ they start out making all the animal noises, but wait for it... guaranteed they will be flumoxed by the time they hit the flamingoes fluting!!! Provides an excellent laugh for overtired new parents.
Polar Bear exceptional.......2007-05-17
We liked this book for the colorful illustrations and the easy to memorize word patterns.
my son likes it!.......2007-03-16
My son likes it verey much although he's not as crazy as he saw "brown bear". The boa constrictor looks a little scary.
Great BOok.......2007-01-26
It has words in it a lil to over the top for lil ones but my son that is 14months doesn't seem to mind! He loves it! A great book! 5 stars!
My 9 month old loves this book!.......2006-10-05
I read many board books to my son and the first time I read this to him, he couldn't get enough! We haven't bought Brown Bear yet, but certainly do that after seeing his reaction to this book.
He follows each page and reaches out to "feel" the textures of the graphics of the animals. I think the illustrations are perfect for his age and really keep him captivated!
I am buying duplicates now so we'll never go without!

The Grouchy Ladybug
Customer Reviews:
The first read book!.......2007-06-21
I had to make an entry for this book as it was the first time my daughter read a book by herself. Well with the help of a couple words.
The story is simple. Two ladybugs see a leaf with aphids and decide to have them. The nice ladybug will share but the grouchy ladybug wants them all and offers to fight for them. He is stared down by the nice ladybug and the grouch declares the nice ladybug is not big enough and flies off to find somebody to fight.
He flys by several bugs, reptiles and animals which get larger and larger as he keeps declaring them not to be big enough. The final animal a whale ends up slapping some sense into the ladybug.
It's a fun little book and it's repetitive so it will help a new reader as they learn.
As to the claims of fighting? Well I am not sure it's a valid concern. You don't see any tension and the other creatures respond with "If you insist" to which the answer is "Oh, you're not big enough"
The telling of time comes to play and there are drawings of clocks on each page show the time for each hour. This allowed an introduction to telling time for my girl.
The artwork is good and I liked the concept of the text getting bigger as each new creature got bigger.
Overall a fun read for my girl.
The Bad Tempered Ladybird.......2007-05-19
While this is not one of my favourite Eric Carle books to read aloud, my 4yo son loves it and will sit there pretending to read it to himself. He has long been a fan of the Very Hungry Caterpillar so was thrilled to discover this book.
Interesting Carle Story.......2007-04-17
I just bought this and had to read it myself based on all the conflicting opinions on the story. It's an interesting story. I wouldn't have thought about ladybugs being grouchy... it teaches a very valuable lesson in the end, but I don't think it's Carle's best work. The "fighting" plot didn't bother me that much, but I think it would have been better to pick a different "negative, grouchy" theme. It's not a Carle book I would recommend going out of your way to buy... go with his earlier works, but also include the Quiet Cricket as well...
The Bad Tempered Lady Bird.......2007-04-05
In Australia the release title for this book is "the bad tempered lady bird".
Carle's book explores concepts such as time, size, animal types, sharing and bullying. I really liked this book as a child, but i think it has dated a little, and is not very politically correct.
The bad tempered lady bird/ Grouchy lady bug picks a fight with another lady bug when she does not want to share aphids. When the other lady bug agrees to fight her, the lady bug tells her that she isn't big enough for her to fight, and flies off to find increasingly bigger animals challenging them all to fight her.
Ladybug's a hit!.......2007-01-18
"The Grouchy Ladybug" is a MUST for all children from before 2 years on up through elementary school. The story is enchanting and the illustrations are fantastic. Our great granddaughter (not quite 2) wants to "read" it over and over.

Book Description
The Very Hungry Caterpillar is inarguably one of the most popular children's books of all time. Now, here is the Spanish board book version of The Very Hungry Caterpillar, filling an important niche for the youngest of Spanish-speaking children.
Customer Reviews:
A classic book in spanish.......2007-01-16
What's not to love about this childrens favorite? Perfect for all those who start spanish in school.
We love this book!.......2006-09-15
My daughter is only 20 months old now, but we began reading this book to her at about 14 months. She has learned the names of fruits in spanish and how to count to 5 within a couple of weeks of beginning to read it. It is one of her favorite books along with "Oso pardo, Oso pardo...". This is one of the required books for a spanish class that she will be beginning when she turns 2. As a spanish speaker it is a really easy book for me to read with fun pictures that my daughter enjoys. Even now she loves to put her fingers in the holes to count the fruit. For parents/caregivers who are not quite as experienced in reading spanish, it may be a little difficult to pronounce some of the words, but with some help you should be able to read the words effortlessly after a few times. My parents and in-laws don't speak much english and they love reading these spanish books to their granddaughter. It's a great way for them to bond.
Spanish version of a classic!.......2004-12-05
This Spanish version of "The Very Hungry Caterpillar" is just as cute as the English version. Children will love the pages of varying sizes with holes where the caterpillar has eaten up the food.
You can also practice counting up to five with your little one as the bug eats one apple on Monday, two pears on Tuesday, etc.
The vocabulary in this book DOES require a Spanish speaker in the home. My husband does not speak Spanish and this book is too hard for him to read to our babies, whereas he can read other Spanish board books. Additionally, as it is only in Spanish, my husband cannot compare the Spanish words to English.
Still, I think it's a great addition to your library if one adult speaks Spanish and you are trying to teach your children the language too.
So cool!.......2004-05-23
In case you aren't familiar with this book, it is about a caterpillar who eats and eats and eats. The board book version has holes in the pages so the reader can see what he has eaten. It is so cute! The illustrations are adorable and the kids love it! We are a bilingual family so my boys have the Spansih version. It's super and very durable!
A wonderful way to introduce Spanish into the classroom or y.......2004-05-17
This is a wonderful Spanish translation of a classic. This story flows whether you are reading in English or Spanish. Children are so familiar with this story that they embrace the Spanish easily. This translation is a must have in the multi-lingual classroom.

Book Description
What does an elephant do? It stomps its foot. Can you? From the creator of such beloved classics as The Grouchy Ladybug and The Mixed-Up Chameleon comes this interactive story that invites kids to imitate animal movements. Watching giraffes bend their necks or monkeys wave their arms is fun, but nothing could be better than joining in. From their heads down to their toes, kids will be wriggling, jiggling, and giggling as they try to keep up with these animals!Alligators wiggle, elephants stop, gorillas thump, and giraffes bend. Can you do it? ` I can do it!' is the confidence-building message of this fun-filled interactive picture book. A variety of familiar animals invite young children to copy their antics, and as they play, they will learn such important skills as careful listening, focusing attention, and following instructions. Just as alphabet books introduce the very young child to letters and simple words, From Head to Toe introduces the basic body parts and simple body movements. And in the same way that children progress from understanding simple words to reading and writing sentences and stories, so they will progress from simple body movements to dancing, gymnastics, and other sports and activities, with confidence and pleasure.
Eric Carle's colorful collages have delighted children for more than a generation. Each book provides hours of fun while encouraging them to stretch their imaginations. His matchless words and illustrations now send out a new challenge:
Are you ready?
Here we go!
Move yourself
From Head to Toe.

Customer Reviews:
Body movement book!.......2007-06-05
Another excellent Eric Carle book, best in board book version, since the target audience is susceptible to chewing, ripping, and drooling. It's the ultimate audience participation book with its "Can you do it? I can do it!" You'll have little people shrugging shoulders and stomping feet before you know it.
Move to learn.......2007-05-09
De la cabeza a los pies has the same advantages for children learning Spanish as a second language as the English version has for English language learners. The text is both brief and comprehensible due to the illustrations, and it's also interactive as it invites listeners to participate in the body actions. Native Spanish speakers also enjoy the opportunity to get all their body parts moving.
very entertaining.......2007-01-09
My one year old son loves this book, and I love acting it out for him.
a family favorite.......2007-01-09
This is one fun book--both kids and adults enjoy it! As in any Eric Carle story, the art is lovely and provides a great springboard for identifying animals and body parts with preschool children.
very fun!.......2007-01-09
My 16 month old loves to turn his head like a penguin, thump his chest like a gorilla, and wave his arms like a monkey along with this book!

A cricket is born who cannot talk! A bigger cricket welcomes him to the world, then a locust, a cicada, and many other insects, but each time the tiny cricket rubs his wings together in vain: no sound emerges. In the end, however, he meets another quiet cricket, and manages to find his "voice." Children will love the repetitive text as they meet a steady parade of new creatures (including a "spittlebug, slurping in a sea of froth"); and of course they'll delight in the happy ending. This is one of a series of large (11.5 by 8.5 inches) format Eric Carle books with a mechanical twist: in this case, the quiet cricket bursts into (surprisingly authentic) electronic song as you turn the last page. (The battery is replaceable.) An amusement for the ears, but most of all--as ever, with Carle--a feast for the eyes. The colorful cut-paper illustrations are simply gorgeous, drawing you in even on the hundredth reading. (And there will be a hundredth reading, followed by many more.) (Baby to preschool) --Richard Farr
Customer Reviews:
A definite favorite.......2007-05-06
This is probably one of my son's favorite Eric Carle books. The repetitive text can be a trifle annoying until you realize it encourages your child to "read along" with you, which is great.
Unique Story - Great Illustrations.......2007-02-17
My daughter (18 mos) and I love this book. I especially like the story as it is unique. A great way to introduce children to different types of bugs. None of the bug names are hard to pronounce, but then again, I was an amateur entymologist in my formitive years. *wink* And the ending with the cricket chirping is very cute. I like this one as much as his other well known books: hungry caterpillar, busy spider, brown bear, polar bear, panda bear, do kangaroos have mothers too, etc etc. Definitely add this book to your Carle Collection.
Great Book.......2007-01-10
This is a great one! We read this one over and over and over.
A darling book.......2007-01-05
A darling childrens book about finding your own voice! The poor little cricket so badly wants to sing, but only when he's ready, and with a little love and encouragement, finally sings his song. A lovely book not only for young ones, but also a nice "reminder" lesson for adults.

Every young child should be introduced to this story, as great a classic as its predecessor, The Very Hungry Caterpillar. This colorful picture book describes a spider's day. Blown onto a farmyard fence, she starts to spin a web. The other animals ask if she wants to play, but in every case "the spider didn't answer. She was very busy spinning her web." The book is touchable: elements including the strands of web are embossed on the pages and you can follow them with your fingertips. But the best thing by far is Carle's familiar, yet still breathtaking skill as an illustrator. Especially in this large 11.5-by-8.5-inch format, his cow, goat, and dog (just to mention three favorites) capture the essence of each animal in a way few artists can hope to approach. (Baby to preschool) --Richard Farr

Mom's favorite.......2007-05-06
No gimmicks, lights, or sounds here so it's not as fascinating for my son. I try to jazz it up a little bit with the animal noises and different animal voices which my son seems to enjoy. This is a good one for bedtime.
Very busy spider.......2007-01-19
Perfect for the preschool set. All five of my grandkids love this book. Helps mitigate the "look, a spider...let's kill it" response to bugs.
The very busy spider.......2006-12-06
The Very busy spider is a good book. It show the dedication of a spider tryin to spin it's web. Farm animal begain to come up and offer to hangout with the spider but the spider alwasy refused. This book can also teach you animal sounds. This book show how if your determinded that nothin can stop you. So it will teach your children a good lesson.
The pictures in this book are good. It show alot of animals.
This book is a easy read for children of all ages.
This is a good all time favorite book for many kids.
My 2-year old loves it........2006-03-10
This book does not do much for me, but my 2-year old son absolutely loves it. The book gives him a chance to make animal sounds, and the raised texture of the spider web invites his touch. Of course he is fascinated by the spider herself.
Good message, but not so entertaining.......2006-02-23
My daughter is 3 months old, and she will listen to this story since it is short. I love the message. I would give it 5 stars, but she doesn't get absorbed in it like The Very Hungry Catapillar.

misadvertised.......2007-05-07
The book was listed as a hard covered book. It did not say that it was a mini book. The child was very disappointed. Amazon did give me a $10 credit but I have to look for the proper sized book elsewhere.
Invest in LARGER hardcover.......2007-04-07
I bought the Hardcover version of this book that was $6.99. I was pretty disappointed when I received it and found that it was the size of my HAND. The print is also tiny, which makes it hard to read. I would tell anyone looking at this book to buy the more expensive and larger copy of this book.
Other than it being very small, this is a great book. The illustrations are beautiful, and the story is really cute. I also think the fold out pages are great. Eric Carle is wonderful!

This book is great. Typical images of Eric Carle and a great little story that helps put my little guy to sleep every night.

Many of Eric Carle's books begin with a small creature being born just as a great yellow sun rises. This time the hero is a firefly, and the inimitably Carle-ish cut-paper orange-and-yellow sun is setting. The firefly buzzes off in search of companionship, but keeps following other lights by mistake--a candle, a flashlight, a lantern--and these in turn are all leading in the direction of a fireworks display. Finally, the lonely firefly finds the friends it is seeking--a dozen or more other fireflies. This is one of a series of large (11.5 by 8.5 inches) format Carle books with a mechanical twist: in this case, the firefly's new group of friends start to flash (from tiny yellow bulbs embedded in the book) as you turn the last page. (The battery is replaceable.) (Baby to preschool) --Richard Farr
Book Description
One night a very lonely firefly goes off in search of friends. Each time he sees a flicker of light he flies off toward it, but none of them turn out to be fireflies. He sees a lantern, an owl's eyes, even headlights shining in the darkness. Will the lonely firefly ever find creatures like himself?
A classic in its own time, The Very Lonely Firefly is finally available in a beautiful board book format, perfect for the youngest readers and the smallest hands. And just as in the hardcover edition, the fireflies' lights actually light up, delighting children of all ages.
Customer Reviews:
Good book but..........2007-05-16
My granddaughter and I enjoy reading this book very much, but when I received the book the batteries were dead. The batteries are $3.00 each, and it requires four of them. I paid $15.00 for the book, and so it will cost me almost what the book did to replace them!
Cute!.......2007-05-06
My son and I enjoy many of the Eric Carle books and this one is no exception. Of course he especially likes the end where all the fireflies light up.
GREAT and VERY entertaining.......2007-04-25
My daughter loves this book. The twinkling lights at the end are very entertaining!
Another classic!.......2007-03-08
Eric Carle's books are wonderful! This one is no exception! With few words and vibrant pictures, the reader is captivated with the story from the first page. I love the "little surprise" on the last page! This is one story we read over and over and over...again!
It's ok... not his best story.......2007-02-13
My daughter LOVES Eric Carle's books. They are consistently her favorites ones to read. I bought this for her for Christmas. It's now February and she just started requesting this at bedtime. She likes the lights at the end. I think the story would have been better without the little dialogues from the characters. I understood what they were talking about, but I didn't think it was relevant to the actual story. So I don't read them anymore.
As an adult, I would have to say this is definitely not Carle's best work. The dark illustrations are not typical of his other books (but I understand why they have to be dark - it's a firefly at night - duh) and some of the characters are angry looking (dogs and cats fighting).
So I gave this a 3 out of 5. I wouldn't say don't buy it, but I would say don't go out of your way. Go out of your way for the other Carle books.
