This book is the mother of books about infectious diseases all around the world! This is an obligatory book that has to be on your library. Has excellent reviews of the majority of illnesses with great quality images. Even this version of the book includes a CD with images info to make your own presentations. Currently, I think is the best book about Infectious diseases.

I am a hospital pharmacist. An infectious disease pharmacist showed me how much you could find in the previous edition of this book when I was doing a residency. Because many of the patients get admitted to the hospital due to some type of infection, this book has been invaluable in helping me understand details of any disease state. It has helped me understand antibiotic drug therapies and the reasons behind them more than any other written resource. And most importantly, it is a known and respected reference to the hospitalists that I can refer to modifying drug therapies or answering drug information questions related to infectious diseases.

It may seem expensive, but it has laid down multiple blueprints for looking at the complicated field of infectious diseases. I encourage anyone who is going into the field of pharmacy to make sure they can at least access these books.

As an infectious disease fellow, I recommend that anyone who want be an ID man should have such a book. Most infectious problems and diseases have been detailed in this book, although there are far going of emerging diseases and new antibiotics.
The only shortcomes of this book are lackiing comprehensive details and reveiw of antimicrobial therapy for some disease entities.

Design of software has often taken place in isolation from the many lessons learned in the design of objects or non-computer processes. Continuing in the tradition of Donald Norman's highly influential Design of Everyday Things, this collection of essays provides essential inspiration for reflective software designers driven by practical concerns of what works, what doesn't--and why. Contains contributions by such insightful software engineers as David Liddle, Donald Norman, John Bennett, and Michael Schrage.

I had to buy this book for a class; if you're interested in a historical perspective on instructional technology, you might find this interesting. I didn't.

4 out of 5 stars Take the user into account.......2000-02-20

Winograd brings together a mix of software designers, computer scientists, graphic artists, architects, scientists, and consultants, and their conceptions and methodologies for software design. Each describes their design situations from his or her position of expertise. Each of the "designers" has a similar message, ease of use and interaction must be relevant to the user, not only to the hierarchical structure of the software. Another point in the book is, if software is designed in such a way as to have the user append knowledge, as opposed to throw all daily logic of how things work in their world out the window, the learning curve for new software would be minimal.

The designer's involvement needs to be invoked from the beginning of the software project, and should not be considered as just a "final coat of spray-on aesthetics". Thought and design energy need to be given towards the capabilities of identifying the skill level and needs of the user, so that the user can accomplish his or her tasks while enduring the least amount of frustration. Hopefully the user will also learn something through his or her experience with the software, which would then bring them up to a new level of mastery. The use of design teams, with members encapsulating differing points of view, is emphasized as a successful methodology for the development of such software applications.

4 out of 5 stars Bringing Design to Software.......2000-02-16

This book is a collection of chapters focusing on design and design topics. The chapter authors are from a variety of disciplines including software and product design, technology, architecture, graphic arts, and philosophy. This diversity adds to the richness in which the book addresses "design," expands the notion of the "designer" community of practice, and illustrates the importance of multifunctionality in design by taking lessons of practice from a variety of disciplines. After each chapter a "profile" of a product or situation is provided as a real-life example of the key points of the chapter.

The following themes appeared throughout the book:

· There needs to be a move from product-centered design to user-centered (or maybe use-centered) design. Talking, observing, interacting and listening with the users are key activities in making this happen.

· The move to a user-centered design can be aided by recognizing and professionalizing the role of a designer in the software development process. (in this book people are variously referred to as software designers, interaction designers, artist-designers, software architects, etc.)

· There is a need for tools and materials developed for software designers to create a language of design, and to develop prototypes and models. These things are needed for use in the design process to allow for a "conversation with the materials," --to create opportunities for exploration of the design, which may lead to unexpected characteristics and surprises. These, in turn, allow for reflection and lead to the development of better questions about our design and design process. These tools and methods also allow for communicating ideas, changes and goals to others involved in the design process.

· Design is a team-sport. Successful designers will be familiar with the roles, language and concerns of everyone involved in the design process so as best to include them, and their contributions, into the overall design effort. It's also true that the design process resides within an organization, whose values, culture, management and business concerns have an impact on the success of design efforts. A skillful designer will be aware of (and perhaps challenge) the impact of the organization on the design process to allow the design effort to be as successful as possible.

This is a good thought-starter for anyone interested in broadening their definition of designer and incorporating additional perspectives into their design practices.

4 out of 5 stars Design is not only for the designers........2000-02-15

"Bringing Design to Software" is not a software design "how-to" book; it is an edited exploration of the nature of software design through dialog. It investigates the concepts of software, design and prototyping as basal considerations for an understanding of the tenets of software design as a practice. The dialog involves looking at design from a number of areas including software design, other design fields, research, instruction and design management. Winograd, et al., have compiled the perspectives of practitioners from the fields mentioned above, many of them responsible for some aspect of some of the most popular applications currently available, and profiled explanatory and illuminating projects and programs to accompany those perspectives. They have woven this collection of experiences into a coherent focus on the factors and issues characteristic of design activities and the inherent "...situated nature of design - a sensitivity to the human context in all its richness and variety," proffering that design is both enabled and constrained by interaction with people.

The book promotes the idea that the most important people in software design are the users. Mitchell Kapor (interface designer for Lotus 1-2-3), the author of chapter 1, says that "...design...(is) where you stand with a foot in two worlds - the world of technology and the world of people and human purposes - and you try to bring the two together." "Bringing Design to Software" attempts to provide a way of looking at the interaction between the users and their world from a software design perspective and should be read by anyone seeking to enhance their ability to design software or to better understand software design considerations.

4 out of 5 stars I particularly liked the use of "profiles" between chapters........1998-09-07

The various contributions are inconsistent (writing style varies from riveting to just readable), but Winograd does a good job of tying everyone's contributions together. I particularly liked the use of "profiles" (short pieces highlighting a specific product or concept) that supplemented the longer chapters. Chapter 8 and the subsequent profile on IDEO should be required reading for anyone assigned to a software design project. And everyone involved in human-computer interaction should read Kapor's, "A Software Design Manifesto" (which is Chapter 1).

William J. Bennett, that doyen of common sense who brought us The Book of Virtues, has returned to the topic of child rearing, delivering a massive canon on the education of young children. He joins fellow veterans of the U.S. Department of Education Chester E. Finn Jr. and John T.E. Cribb Jr. in offering a traditional, back-to-basics resource for parents. The Educated Child is a tome to page through and return to as the years go by, with chapters divided by subjects and grade levels. One of the most helpful aspects of the guide is its outline of what to expect--or demand, in some cases--in the K-8 essentials. The writers list book titles, historic dates, science topics, and other issues that should be covered, borrowing heavily from E.D. Hirsch's Core Knowledge Series, the fact-specific book series that begins with What Your Kindergartner Needs to Know.

But Bennett et al.'s take on education goes further, with the authors weighing in on such controversial topics as sex education, TV, the Internet, self-esteem, and school uniforms with statements that largely reflect their conservative reputations. They also stick to the insistence that Western culture be emphasized in American classrooms. In some cases, however, the three don't always agree--acknowledging diverging views on year-round education, for instance. Some of what they cover is basic, instinctive stuff: we don't need another guide telling us to talk to our children about their school day. But there's valuable advice, too, such as how to save your child from a bad teacher and what questions to ask in a parent-teacher conference. For parents puzzled or overwhelmed by what the authors refer to as "the blob" of the education bureaucracy, The Educated Child can be a helpful insiders' view from those who once governed the biggest blob of all. --Jodi Mailander Farrell

Book Description

If you care about the education of a child, you need this book. Comprehensive and easy to use, it will inform, empower, and encourage you.

Just as William J. Bennett's The Book of Virtues has helped millions of Americans teach young people about character, The Educated Child delivers what you need to take control. With coauthors Chester E. Finn, Jr., and John T. E. Cribb, Jr., former Secretary of Education Bennett provides the indispensable guide.

Championing a clear "back-to-basics" curriculum that will resonate with parents and teachers tired of fads and jargon, The Educated Child supplies an educational road map from earliest childhood to the threshold of high school. It gives parents hundreds of practical suggestions for helping each child succeed while showing what to look for in a good school and what to watch out for in a weak one.

The Educated Child places you squarely at the center of your young one's academic career and takes a no-nonsense view of your responsibilities. It empowers you as mothers and fathers, enabling you to reclaim what has been appropriated by "experts" and the education establishment. It out-lines questions you will want to ask, then explains the answers -- or non-answers -- you will be given. No longer will you feel powerless before the education "system." The tools and advice in this guide put the power where it belongs -- in the hands of those who know and love their children best.

Using excerpts from E. D. Hirsch's Core Knowledge Sequence, The Educated Child sets forth a state-of-the art curriculum from kindergarten through eighth grade that you can use to monitor what is and isn't being taught in your school. It outlines how you can help teachers ensure that your child masters the most important skills and knowledge. It takes on today's education controversies from phonics to school choice, from outcomes-based education to teaching values, from the education of gifted children to the needs of the disabled. Because much of a youngster's education takes place outside the school, The Educated Child also distills the essential information you need to prepare children for kindergarten and explains to the parents of older students how to deal with such challenges as television, drugs, and sex.

If you seek high standards and solid, time-tested content for the child you care so much about, if you want the unvarnished truth about what parents and schools must do, The Educated Child is the one book you need on your shelf.

Download Description

Former U.S. Secretary of Education Bennett (The Book of Virtues) and his colleagues (Finn, author of We Must Take Charge; Cribb, formerly of the U.S. Department of Education) offer American parents an impassioned and straight-shooting reference for educating their children. In prose free of academic rhetoric, the authors state: "[I]f your school is inflicting a mediocre education on your child, the sooner you know about it the better." They then present a "yardstick" by which to judge the academic quality of any school (public or private). A model core curriculum organized by grade level--primary (K-3), intermediate (4-6), and junior high (7 and 8)--presents the material clearly and logically, and helps readers assess whether a child is getting a thorough dose of English, history and geography, the arts, math and science. While blunt in their criticism of decaying academic standards (evident in grade inflation, lowered expectations for students and terrible international rankings), the authors are unequivocal in their support of dedicated educators and all those willing to hold children to the highest possible standard. Parents may question some of the model curriculum's expectations (e.g., that second graders dramatize the death of Socrates), but the authors are quick to reassure readers that the book's purpose is not to serve as a list of must-haves but rather as "inspiration and general guidance" in gaining a sense of "the knowledge and skills that should lie at the heart of a solid elementary education." Bennett is a controversial figure because of his passionate cultural conservatism. But this book, despite a brief word in favor of school vouchers, is about padagogy, not politics. It's an ambitious and commonsensical guide that will inspire both parents and educators.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars A commonsense guide to what kids should be taught.........2007-04-07

I particularly like the checklists of what subjects are appropriate and customary at the various grade levels. It is a lot clearer and more interesting reading than the state standards our kids' school hands out, which are written in educator-ese. If you are interested in your kids' education then you should be interested in this book.

4 out of 5 stars Good Analysis / Poor Solution.......2005-03-11

This book provides a good overview of what children should learn year by year, subject by subject, and how parents can help them achieve their educational goals. One reviewer complained that the authors overemphasized the importance of limiting T.V. and reading to kids, but I am a teacher and can tell you that many parents don't bother to take those basic but crucial steps with their kids. The authors offer a good analysis of the problems with public education today (which both parents and schools can contribute to), but their main solution to the problems of the educational system is standardized testing. As a teacher in Texas, where high-stakes testing rules the public school system (which is why I work at a charter school and will never send my child to a public school in Texas), I have learned that placing such overwhelming emphasis on an annual test does not raise the standards of students' educations, it has actually caused too many schools to teach to the test, cheat, and neglect the needs of gifted students in order to prep the slower ones for the tests.

2 out of 5 stars Unimpressive and unhelpful.......2004-05-24

I purchased this book to help me with ideas for homeschooling my children. This book is the longest in my collection but it is the least informative. The first 100 pages or so deride the current efforts of public schools, yet offer little advice except "turn off the television" and "read to your children". The most interesting and helpful information in the book was taken directly from the Core Curriculum Series, which is a useful resource for parents who want to ensure that their child is receiving a good education. This book is preachy and redundant.

4 out of 5 stars No need for public school.......2003-07-17

This book is subversive in today's American culture. It teaches the traditional knowledge and values of Western Civilization. If you read this book and use it with your children, they will be immune to the propaganda of the usual American public school education and will have many problems with their teachers in school - at best they will only be bored, at worst they will end up diagnosed ADHD, on Ritalin and in special education classes at which time they will be throwaway students. Public school education today is all about ecology, multiculturalism and one world government. The 3 R's and individuality are not emphasized in government schools. Be prepared to homeschool your kids all the way thru school if you teach them anything from this book.

5 out of 5 stars What your child should be learning grade by grade.......2003-04-22

Mr. Bennett and company provide parents with practical ways for parents to be involved with their child's education. They advocate that parents actually take a close look at our children's schools and assess what is being taught. Stress is placed on classical education and the benefits it entails. They provide CORE curriculm examples of what children should be learning grade by grade beginning with Kindergarten and up to Grade 8. There is also an excellent chapter devoted to preschoolers. An excellent reference.

4 out of 5 stars science intersecting with philosophy.......2007-06-01

Philosophy is one of the oldest intellectual pursuits. Yet it is only in very recent times that science is starting to provide an underpinning. The status of this is argued in this book. With some of the latest results and trends in neuroscience as the talking point.

The book is formatted with 2 scientists providing views on consciousness, as gleaned from experiments. While the contrary opinions are given by 2 philosophers. With the scientists then given space to issue a reply.

Whatever your own positions on all this, perhaps you can appreciate the excitement in the air. For the first time, philosophy has hard experimental observations to cogit over. And the problem of consciousness is surely one of the fundamental unknowns in science.

As far as world civilization textbooks go, this one proves to be the most useful. The book spans from Paleolithic icemen to the industrialized peoples of the 20th century all around the world. Included are timelines within each chapter summarizing major events for the chapter. They are short and to the point. Lovely and helpful pictures appear on every page. As a person reads through this book, the begin to be able to make connections between social, cultural, political, and economic ideas in each civilization and then follows up on how each civilization develops throughout time. It is an excellent textbook for people who want to start studing world history.

            Book Description

This comprehensive, mainstream text takes a social approach to history, using political history as its basic framework. It is known for its readability, its attention to recent scholarship, and its new historical interpretations.

The new edition features increased coverage of global topics. Material on the Middle Ages has been consolidated to allow more room for non-Western coverage. Chapter 27 from the previous edition, which covered both Africa and Asia, has been split into separate chapters on each region. Chapter 11 from the previous edition—on Asia and the Mongols—has been divided into separate chapters on East and South Asia.

          • New! Two-page "Global Trade" boxed features investigate a variety of important products and commodities, including pottery, tea, slaves, and oil. The feature presents historical background on the commodity, traces its trade throughout the world, and shows its impact on other cultures.
          • New! New pedagogy in the Sixth Edition includes key terms, chapter outlines, and chronologies.
          • New! About one-third of the maps, illustrations, "Listening to the Past" primary source features, and "Individuals in Society" biographical features in this edition are new.
