5 out of 5 stars The Future of War.......2004-09-09

I read this book, along with its two sequels, over 20 years ago and was greatly impressed by its scholarship. The stories selected all had a pertinent point to make about the future of war for man. This first volume dealt with future war on earth. It included stories such as "The Man in the Gray Weapons Suit (future air combat)," "A Scenario for the Fall of Night (A successful Soviet invasion of the US in the 1990s)" and "The Screwfly Solution (Alien invaders use a unique biological warfare solution to rid Earth of those pesky humans). Well developed and insightful in its day, and still a good read for those who like military science fiction.

ringtone88.com ite possibly the best movie you've never seen. Read this book and gain an appreciation for a talent that was taken from us WAY too soon.

It is a crying shame that TOR or some far-sighted indy publisher hasn't seen fit to reprint this work and perhaps collect all of Beaumont's published works in one collection. Till then, hold on to your copy of THM for dear life. I certainly will.

5 out of 5 stars Something to Howl about.......2004-02-19

I bit the bullet and bought this Beaumont collection and I'm glad I did. Some publishing company needs to reprint this material so that the masses can experience Beaumont. He is largely forgotten except by those who have seen the Twilight Zones that he wrote or the handful of movie scripts that he did.

5 out of 5 stars WHY IS THIS OUT OF PRINT ?.......2003-07-10

I'll keep this brief. The stories in this book are terrific.
Some creepy, some scary but all are just extraordinarily well written stories. It truly is a shame this book is out of print. Fans of horror, sci-fi and just plain well written short stories will eat this up. Someone re-print this !!!

5 out of 5 stars The Howling Man is Head and Shoulders Above Other Short Fic........1998-05-26

Charles Beaumont was a visionary unappreciated in his time and unlikely to be appreciated since his passing. His mastery of short fiction characterization and plot is unparalled by Stephen King and is only approached by the Short Fiction in Orson Scott Card's Unaccompanied Sonata.

5 out of 5 stars Brilliant writer and storyteller. The Howling Man' great!.......1997-10-20

The Howling Man and other stories in this collection are outstanding. Beaumont is a great talent of the writing craft and writers like King and Straub stand on his shoulders. He's the most gifted and least recognized writers I've had the pleasure of reading.

    Book Description

"The Chevalier Charles-Geneviève-Louise-Auguste-André-Thimothée d'Eon, after a distinguished career as a soldier, diplomat, and secret agent for the Government of King Louis XV of France, told the world that he was a woman who had disguised herself as a man. But d'Eon was lying. In fact he was a man pretending to be a woman who was now admitting to be a man. Why he did that and what happened to him as a result are the main dishes on Mr. Kates's rich banquet table." -- Richard Bernstein, New York Times, reviewing Monsieur d'Eon Is a Woman by Gary Kates

Chevalier d'Eon de Beaumont was born in 1728. Raised as a boy, he was educated as a lawyer and entered the service of Louis XV as a diplomat. In 1756 he was sent to the Russian imperial court as a spy and was said to have dressed as a young woman to gain the confidence of the Empress Elizabeth. He later served in Russia (as a man) as secretary to the French ambassador. Returning to France in 1761, he was appointed a captain of the elite Dragoons, and, after the Treaty of Paris in 1762, went to England as a diplomat and spy. During that time persistent rumors that he was in fact a woman arose, and he did nothing to dispel them. By 1777 he was officially recognized as female in both England and France. Recalled to France, he was reluctantly compelled by Louis XVI to give up his male attire. In 1785 he began to compose his autobiography, which presented much of his experience in religious terms, and he moved back to London. He lived there as a woman until his death in 1810, at which time his body was discovered to be unambiguously male.

This volume includes the first English translations of d'Eon's autobiography (or "historical epistle") and other writings by d'Eon on his life, religious beliefs, and stories of women who concealed their sex to enter religious orders. As historian Gary Kates notes in the introduction, d'Eon's writing can be read on at least two levels: while it ostensibly tells the story of a woman who spent half her life as a man, it is in fact also the story of a man who spent half his life as a woman. As such it demonstrates both the construction and transgression of gender boundaries in personal and historical narrative.
