5 out of 5 stars Totally Awesome.......2000-04-26

I first read Walt Disney's Epcot Center right after the park had first opened. It's Awesome! If your a Disney nut like I am, you will definately like this book. It gives all of the ideas Walt Disney had for the Experimental Prototype Community Of Tommorrow.(EPCOT)

5 out of 5 stars Paul's Review on " New World of Tommorow"ÿ.......2000-01-02

This book offered me a great chance to see EPCOT Center as it was formed and created. It also looks deeply into each of the origanal rides including both Future World and World Showcase areas. The conceptual art work in this book is also increadible. This book also has many photos of the inside and outside of the rides. For the avad fan or for the first timer I suggest this book

5 out of 5 stars Super reference; nostalgic look at future past.......1999-07-10

Two versions of the book were issued. The first one a shorter "pre-opening" version of 127 pages and the second (ca 1983) over 200 pages, includes three or four tri-fold panoramic illustrations. Illustrations are the big attraction here, capturing the park at its pre-opening epic construction through the first year or so. Unfortunate that so much gay activities have cast a poll over the park recently, but efforts under way to apparently tone it down and return it to the glittering jewel depicted in book. A super reference

Richard Olney, best known as a general food writer, is one of America's most erudite experts on authentic French cooking, but it's difficult to find anyone who knows much about him, except for such authorities as Patricia Wells and the late James Beard. The reprinting of Olney's classic and indispensable Simple French Food offers readers the chance to learn more about this most idiosyncratic and accomplished of cooks. No pared down, paint-by-numbers recipes here: Olney is obsessed not only with showing you how to cook, but how to see, smell, feel, listen, and taste as well. Read, for example, Olney's description of Scrambled Eggs and you will understand what you are missing when they are not properly prepared (as they almost never are): "correctly prepared, the softest of barely perceptible curds held in a thickly liquid, smooth, creamy suspension." To scramble eggs, Olney insists on a wooden spoon, a generously buttered copper pan or bain-marie, and a precise control of the temperature--very simple to accomplish, as all his recipes are, as long as you take care to absorb fully his sensuous and exact instructions. --Sumi Hahn Almquist

"Simple French Food has the most marvelous French food to appear in print since Elisabeth David's French Provincial Cooking.... The book's greatest virtue is that the author...really teaches you to cook French in a way I've never seen before. 5 out of 5 stars Olney was the real thing.......2007-04-16

In the 1970s, I picked this up in a San Francisco book store. The table was stacked with what must have been 50 copies and they were on sale for a couple of dollars. Now I wish that I had scooped them all up to give out to friends, as, for a time, it was hard to come by this book. This reissue in hardcover is most welcome.

Olney--to me--was an American Elizabeth David, however, his recipes did offer more detail. He was an excellent cook and writer. His menu book is also excellent, as he takes the designing of a menu very seriously.

It is this book, however, that I come back to time and again. The first recipe I tried back in 1974 was the Hot Onion Omelet with Vinegar (Omelette a la Lyonnaise) on page 94 of the original. It is pure heaven and I have made it about once a month since then (that makes about 360 omlets). It is a perfect meal with a simple salad of arugala or mesclun and a light vinaigrette.

On the subject of vinaigrette Olney states, "As I understand it, it is made of salt, freshly ground pepper, good red-wine vinegar, and first cold-pressing olive oil. It is so easy to make that to prepare a quantity in advance to be stored is risibly impractical. Its commonest faults are: An excess of vinegar; poor oil; poor vinegar." He goes on to say that the best olive oil he has found on the American market is James Plagniol. While this is a nice olive oil we have many, many superior choices now available to us in "America".

Several of the recipes reflect the fish and seafood he had readily available to him in the south of France, where he lived. I especially like his vegetables recipes for their diveristy and often interesting treatment.

While I have not prepared every single recipe in the book, I can say that I have made most without one loser.

If you are interested in learning how to cook "real", unpretentious French food, this book is the place to begin.

5 out of 5 stars Best foodbook read to date.......2007-04-10

I haven't cooked a single recipe from this book, but I have learned more from it than from every other book on cooking I have read in the last ten years. It is that good. Every chapter packed full of tips, hints, and the important stuff - e.g. fennel works with this, oregano doesn't, don't put brandy in a marinade, and so on and so on. And every one of those hints and tips has lead me to a better meal. Buy in bulk and mail them to every person you know who thinks about what they cook and can read.

4 out of 5 stars French.......2006-12-23

Great book to learn more about the French method of cooking. I enjoyed it as I went.

2 out of 5 stars Actually very complex recipies.......2004-02-01

The recipes in this book may be for "Simple French Food" but they are not simple recipes. Unless you have a good background in food preparation and know many sauce and preparation techniques, all of which are French words, you'll be lost in this book.

If you're looking for some simple recipes to make for dinner, or even for company, this is not it unless you're a trained chef.

3 out of 5 stars Good for begginers.......2006-08-21

The book, although complete, does not cover in detail advanced factors such as international arbitration, recourse, performance bonds, etc. It covers the basics, but does not give the professional the tools necessary to interpret and solve disputes arising from non compliance with Letters of Credit and/or Documentary collections. A lot of the topics are covered on a 'text book' view, probably good for college undergrads than for the actual professionals in the field.

5 out of 5 stars The Essence of Walt Whitman.......2003-03-05

As we pass through another period in our history where unspeakable wars seem imminent, the great poets of the present and past draw focus, attempting to sound the alarm that might just possibly awaken us. And always chief among those poets who felt the folly and shame of war is Walt Whitman. So it is no wonder that collections of his poems re-surface and hopefully nourish a generation of young people who face the possibility of following the lifted sword.

Whitman's voice, in this collection from the Calamus poems, is turned toward a more personal declaration of intimacy between men rather than fist-shaking against war. In a beautifully designed and curated format, David Groff has selected poems that are enhanced by Richard Berman's selection of photographic images to allow the reader to listen more carefully to the thoughts of the master. Here we are not ask to weep as with "The Wound Dresser": here we celebrate the comradery and love between the living. The sensitive photographs are the contributions of John Dugdale, Mark Beard, Robert Flynt, Bill Jacobson, Russell Maynor, Frank Yamrus and Steve Morrison, and while none of these images is "illustrational", each embellishes the poetry in a way one believes Walt Whitman would mightily approve. A beautiful volume this.

5 out of 5 stars A CELEBRATION OF LIFE.......2001-03-25

Not only is this a book of beautiful photographs beautifully reproduced, it also has many of Walt Whitman's wonderful Calamus poems from his classic "Leaves of Grass."

The seven male, contemporary photographers represented in the book are all dealing in their images with the themes set forth in Whitman's poetry: loss, love of life and nature and mankind, death, love of man for man, loneliness, companionship, etc.: a man bathing in a tin tub in a John Dugdale cyanotype; two men embracing underwater in a mysterious Robert Flynt image; a man, stripped to the waist, standing alone staring at the camera, in what seems an old, empty house in the hand-colored photograph by Mark Beard; Russell Maynor's color Poloroid of a young, male nude---all of the 76 fascinating photographs in this small, perfectly put together volume deserve to be seen, seen again and shared.

And then, of course, there are always Whitman's magnificent words: "...Doubtless I could not have perceived the universe, or written one of my poems, if I had not freely given myself to comrades, to love." VERY HIGHLY RECOMMENDED

      4 out of 5 stars A touching, informative gem.......2002-10-02

This collection beautifully captures both the magic of letters and the exotic, turbulent China-Burma-India theater of World War II. The devotion this couple, Richard and Reva Beard, have for each other will renew your faith in steadfast love. Their daughter Elaine Pinkerton has added her intriguing, informative historical essays, enriching the reader's imagination and understanding of this little-recognized part of WWII.
You'll find yourself marking letters to re-read later - for their moving sentiment or marvelous wit. Whether you read "From Calcutta with Love" for literary or historical reasons, you'll be amply satisfied.

      4 out of 5 stars Love sustained.......2002-07-29

Having a loved older brother who fought in the European theater of World War II, I've always been fascinated by that time and events. But I'd never known anything about the China-Burma-India theater. So "From Calcutta with Love" was a fascinating story about two very real people. The commitment to their marriage, each other, and their future family was rather inspiring. The times weren't as the romantic movies often portray, but often very difficult even if not in combat. I really enjoyed getting to know about the people, places, and things even before getting to the letters. That helped to make it all so real and honest. By the time I finished I felt like I really knew Richard and Reva. What wonderful parents they must have been!

5 out of 5 stars Unique Way To Look At World War II.......2002-06-11

Elaine Pinkerton's "From Calcutta with Love" offers a unique way to look at World War II. I enjoyed learning about the China-Burma-India theater of operations and getting to know about Richard and Reva Beard through their daily letters. Their devotion was the old-fashioned kind, their relationship one that could serve as a model for today. The book is a powerful reminder of the way WWII tested values, built character and deepened love affairs. "From Calcutta with Love" stayed with me long after I read the epilogue. I was entertained, touched, and inspired!

5 out of 5 stars Letters From India/Letters From Home.......2002-03-13

I enjoyed this book so much! The totality of the letters is finally a story of love, patience, endurance, and the way we and two people in particular are able to live through a long absence and the fears of war. The book gave a strong sense of how very difficult it would be to be separated for TWO years when one is very much in love, and really how brave Richard and Reva both were to keep going, doing what was necessary to get through one day and then the next and then the next. These characters, the mother and father of the author, come through so well, not only through their endearments, but through the everydayness of their lives (when they can be everyday) and the specialness of their lives in times of stress, loneliness and disgust and fear. The author did a superb job of putting all this together. FCWL also includes several fairly long essays about the China-Burma-India theatre, which gives the reader a good grounding on this aspect of World War II. It was nice to have the author tell "the rest of the story" too--about how she and her brother were adopted by Richard and Reva and about their lives as a family.

The recent fatal fires in alpine tunnels have highlighted the necessity for tunnel fire safety installations and procedures. At present these vary from tunnel to tunnel and from country to country. This book brings together, for the first time, contributions from international experts in all areas of the field of tunnel fire investigation and fire fighting. Many aspects of tunnel fire safety are explored, including fire investigations, tunnel fire dynamics, human behaviour and evacuation, tunnel operation during fire emergencies and the role of the fire brigade. Other aspects such as public education, fire testing and the role of fire modelling, are also discussed.

I grew up listening to Brer Rabbit tales. Naturally, when I became a mother, I wanted to share these stories with my child as well. This book is excellent- with pages and pages of great African folktales. Some of the diction is a little difficult to read, but I think that adds to the authenticity. I highly recommend this book!

5 out of 5 stars An American Classic.......2007-05-21

The Uncle Remus tales were a favorite of mine when my grandfather told them to me and as I read them to my grandchildren, I can see they will be a favorite of theirs, too. As the characters develop, the children can see bits and pieces of their family and friends emerge. An American Classic.

        5 out of 5 stars A Complete Anthology.......2007-01-03

Nicely bound and printed with first edition illustrations. For perspective, I also recommend "Joel Chandler Harris: A Biography and Critical Study" by R. Bruce Bickley, Jr. (see my review).

This is a beautiful keepsake type edition of this book. Anyone who grew up reading Uncle Remus or having it read to them,as I did, would enjoy owning this wondeful book. What great memories it brings back!! Highly recommend this book for Uncle Remus lovers.

5 out of 5 stars a National and Southern TREASURE !.......2006-05-01

I could not disagree more with B. Tracy Hanson. My beloved grandpa of dear memory read these stories to me as a child on many a lazy summer afternoon in Florida. I think they are most appropriate for children, and a must for Southern children, black and white, because it is part of their Southern heritage and dialect. The stories and language are fascinating and captivating. I would lay there enthralled and enchanted, as my grandpa would read to me, each afternoon, during the summers I spent with him and my grandma. These stories and him reading them to me are some of my most treasured childhood memories!

Tracy, pictures!!?? The whole time my grandpa read me these stories, I never even knew there were pictures/drawings in the book. He just read, and I used my IMAGINATION. (Though, now that I do look at the original 1880's drawings, they are wonderful.) Language adapted!!!??? The language is a major element in making this anthology a treasure! JCH has preserved a Southern dialect, that is an integral part of the stories. These stories should be read out loud by a Southerner (who can handle the dialect, though even a Northerner could probably do a good job of "faking it", with some practice.) (Even though I speak proper, standard English, I can easily slip into this dialect, having heard it as a child.)

Oh, David, how sickeningly "politically correct". Violence?? What violence?? These are children's tales ...... Uncle Remus was telling them to a CHILD! Violence, ugh! You make it sound like the "Texas Chainsaw Massacre". These stories are suitable for any child, unless you are a "bleeding-heart, pansy liberal".

At 30, Gregory Simpson, son of a tobacconist and member of the smokers-only Suicide Club, decides to kick the habit. The incentives are all there, beginning with the prospect of living longer than his dead cigarette f(r)iend, Theo. On the other hand, what is he to do with his hands, his anger, and 104-year-old Walter, who keeps knocking over his ashtrays? Worse, how will the Company--which has financed his addiction and monitored his surprisingly good health--react? Writing a memoir (in which nicotine and smoke have the largest part) might quell Gregory's craving, keep his hands occupied, and put off mortality: "I have a vague but insistent memory of Miss Bryant in English Composition teaching us that the narrator can never die. That if the narrator died at the end of the story, then how could he possibly tell it?" He hopes she's right. On the other hand, someone asks him, "If you took up writing to give up smoking, how are you going to give up writing?"

This playful first novel is full of elegant observations about the rituals of tobacco and of another equally important addiction: love. For Gregory, foreign films have hopelessly intertwined sex and smoke. His first girlfriend takes him to a series "where a sign in the toilet said No Smoking Rauchen Verboten Ne Pas Fumer Non Fumare while the screen filled with unrepentant images of the twentieth century's most proficient smokers.... I saw nobody die of lung cancer, not on screen. Nobody even coughed or had a sore throat, except perhaps Marlene Dietrich."

Intercutting present woes and nicotine nostalgia, Richard Beard has fashioned a hyperimaginative and moving novel of obsession. Louis MacNeice famously remarked of Auden, "Everything he touches turns to cigarettes," and the same can be said for most of X20's characters, down to Bananas the cat. Bananas's desire is so great that he ends up with his own tobacco pouch, which he carries with him from living room to laboratory: "It was a long time since he'd been satisfied with the delicate inhalation of ambient air above ashtrays."

Gregory Simpson is thirty and trying to quit, keeping ten fingers glued to a keyboard in order to fight their incessant ache to hold a burning paper tube filled with dead leaves. In twenty entries in twenty days for twenty to a pack -- one word for each cigarette inhaled over the course of ten smoke-filled years -- he examines his life in tense, withdrawal-induced fits and starts: the friendships cemented and defined by nicotine; the intimate relationships crushed or stifled; the acrid, immoral and rebellious satisfactions. But with strength of purpose and improved concentration comes the sobering revelation that his habit is more political than personal. Even if he kicks, Gregory realizes, he's still living in a tobacco world.

3 out of 5 stars an author waiting to be discovered.......2006-01-27

In X20, our narrator Gregory keeps a journal for his first 20 days of giving up smoking. In doing so he lets the reader into his mind with a series of flashbacks alongside the main narrative which he also intersperses with nuggets of tobacco history and folklore. As the journal progresses the various story strands come together to reveal the bigger picture of Gregory's life.

Richard Beard is one of the few modern exponents of interesting and exciting experimental fiction. His experiments do not always pay off but half the fun is in the trying and he successfully brings the reader along with him for the ride. X20 struggles to achieve sufficient narrative flow within the main story thread but there is enough momentum there for the reader to keep going. This is Beard's first novel and I have also read Damascus for which I would give a very similar review.

If you are a fan of BS Johnson or Georges Perec then X20 may be of interest. Readers who have recently enjoyed the works of David Mitchell and Dan Rhodes may also find something to appeal here. Certainly Beard deserves a wider audience.

5 out of 5 stars Not a book about giving up smoking.......2004-04-21

This is a cleverly written book, WITHOUT Beard trying to outsmart the reader. For example note the names of the characters. Great. This was so readable, I too could not put it down. This book I swear, energized me. I felt better for reading it. What better thing can you say.

loved this book- best book i've read in quite awhile. one of those books for which you try to SLOW DOWN your reading in order to put off the inevitable end. highly highly recommend. i'm back today trawling for anything else he may have written since this one... :)

5 out of 5 stars Addicted to Association.......2001-10-15

More than a book about smoking, Beard's character finds himself addicted to memories, lust, love and companionship. Living in a world he can't really get into, but can't give up.

The book is written in the style of a man trying to give up smoking, writing entries to keep his hands busy and the length of the entries as well as thier content, show the withdraw. The main characters life unravels through these entries as well which give it a nice touch. At times witty, at times rather morbid, this book is a great read. Though I don't like this edition's cover art... cough, cough...

4 out of 5 stars An excellent first effort.......1999-04-14

An author's first novel will set the tone of his career. Therefore, the career of Richard Beard is one that I shall be following. In "X20", Beard involves the reader with a host of characters. He has shown the ability to give depth to his subjects, and allow them to grow throughout the novel.

This book does seem to start off with a noticeable lack of focus. The author tells the story from a several different points in time, jumping back and forth between periods in his life. Hearing the story from the start and the finish concurrently can be a little overwhelming at first, but that is soon remedied. By the end of the book, I was wishing that there were more cigarettes in a pack. This is a very worthy read for smokers and non-smokers alike.
