"A moment before the curtain rises, the Hon. Ernest Woolley drives up to the door of Loam House in Mayfair. There is a happy smile on his pleasant, insignificant face, and this presumably means that he is thinking of himself. He is too busy over nothing, this man about town, to be always thinking of himself, but, on the other hand, he almost never thinks of any other person. Probably Ernest's great moment is when he wakes of a morning and realises that he really is Ernest, for we must all wish to be that which is our ideal."

As absolutely wonderful read.......2003-05-29
I have been something of a fan of J.M. Barrie for a long time, and I was quite glad when this book fell into my hands. Barrie is mainly remembered today for his wonderful Peter Pan stories, but his literary talents extended far afield. He wrote this play in 1902 as a social commentary. In it, a haughty, Victorian family is presented, with their upstairs/downstairs, ironclad class prejudices, and no one is more of a supporter of this than their butler Crichton. But, when they are all shipwrecked on a desert island, a new social order is born - what was natural in England is unnatural on the island. And, if they should be rescued, what will happen then?
This play makes an absolutely wonderful read. Mr. Barrie included many sidebars and comments that make the play read just as well as a novel. If you are a fan of pre-1914 British literature (as I am), or just like a cracking good read, then I highly recommend that you get this book!

Book Description
"The Little Minister" by J. M. Barrie was first published in Good Words Magazine, spanning the months January to December 1891. Reckoned to be Barrie's best work, it is one of several novels about the fictional village of Thrums, said to be modeled on Barrie's home town of Kirriemuir. In 1840's Scotland, a young Scottish pastor falls in love with an educated, radiant gypsy girl, who turns out to be a peeress who impersonates a gypsy and smoothes things over between rebellious weavers and the authorities in 1840 Scotland.
The play version, produced by the legendary Charles Frohman, was a tremendous success in which the star, according to William Winter's review Jan.10,1897 "expressed impulse, pertness, perversity, caprice, discontent. mischief, longing, self-will, arch and tantalizing sweetness and charmingly irrational contradictions of an impetuous girl." It was made into a RKO movie in 1934 with Katharine Hepburn and John Beal (as the Scottish Minister). According to Maltin's Movie Guide, "Hepburn was radiant."

I'm coming, but I maun give Mr. Dishart permission to pass first. Hae you heard, Mr. Dishart, Wearyworld whispered, "that the Egyptian diddled baith the captain and the shirra? It's my official opinion that she's no better than a roasted onion, the which, if you grip it firm, jumps out o' sicht, leaving its coat in your fingers. Mr. Dishart, you can pass."

A Little Diamond.......2006-08-17
While I couldn't find the World Syndicate 1933 hardback edition that I read of J.M. Barrie's tale first copyrighted in 1891, I did get caught up in the events of the story. The protagonist is a minor character in terms of involvement that recounts the events of the little minister Gavin Dishart. At age 21, Dishart has graduated from university and assumes his first church of the Auld Licht, moving to Thrums with his mother Martha. There with housekeeper Jean they move into the parsonage. The story is told through the eyes of the schoolmaster, who we learn is a biological relative unbeknownst to Gavin. The people of the district are primarily weavers. Their thick brogues are written into the dialogue with unusual words (ken, syne, dominie) that take a bit of time to get used to for the modern reader. For instance Rob Dow talks about the upcoming rain with this response: "Ay," said Tosh eagerly, "but will it be a saft, cowdie sweet ding-on?" You get the sense that they're considering whether it'll be a hard or soft rain, but the specifics zoom past the modern reader not used to the brogue. (I found it interesting that one townsman is named Peter Tosh whose name would be today better known to me as a reggae singer from Jamaica!)
A strike squelching by the military and police is outmaneuvered by the information spread by a gypsy referred to as "the Egyptian." After the opening salvo, the events of the story become less political and more personal as Gavin slowly falls in love with the Egyptian, Babbie, who hides a false identity. With complications made by Lord Rintoul who also wants to marry Babbie for her beauty, the story becomes a romance between money and love. Barrie throws in a bit of adventure with a major flood that rearranges the landscape before bringing the story to conclusion. I found the story to be charming with themes and characters that still speak to us today. This story is a little diamond, well worth dusting off by the modern reader. Enjoy!
great book.......2001-10-25
I recently picked up a copy of this book at the Lenox used book sale. My copy was inscribed by someone who gave it as a present in 1941. The book jacket says that it is a "children's book" but that's along the lines of saying that Gulliver's Travels is a children's book. The author is the same one who wrote Peter Pan.
It was written around the turn of the century and its style is a little bit more Victorian. However, it is a very interesting book, and I was fascinated by it. (Not quite fascinated enough to read it in one sitting, but fascinated enough that it was hard to tear myself away.)
The narrator is a man who was in love with a woman and circumstances separted them. Now, about 20 years later, she moves not far away from him with her son. The focus is on the circumstances involving the son, which is basically a simple love story.
Nothing original here, but some of the language is very poetic, and he tells a gripping story. Those who are interested in such things will enjoy the Scottish dialect and description of the lifestyle of a small Scottish weaving town.

Great Reading........2005-12-20
Sir James Matthew Barrie, Bt., OM (May 9, 1860 - June 19, 1937), more commonly known as J. M. Barrie, was a Scottish novelist and dramatist. He is best known for creating the character Peter Pan, whom he based on his friends, the Llewelyn-Davies boys.
Barrie was born in Kirriemuir, Angus, the second youngest of ten children, and was educated at Dumfries Academy and Edinburgh University. He became a journalist at Nottingham, then London, and became a novelist. His first novels were set in Kirriemuir, disguised as "Thrums" (his father was a weaver). Barrie often wrote dialogue in Scots. He then wrote for the theater, including Quality Street, What Every Woman Knows, and The Admirable Crichton.
His 'Thrums' novels were hugely successful when they were published, starting with Auld Licht Idylls (1888). Next came A Window in Thrums (1889) and The Little Minister (1891). His two 'Tommy' novels, Sentimental Tommy and Tommy and Grizel came in 1896 and 1902 and dealt with themes much more explicitly related to what would become Peter Pan. The first appearance of Pan came in The Little White Bird (1901).
This book is also a very enjoyable read.
A wonderful story.......2001-11-22
J.M. Barrie, the author of the wonderful Peter Pan stories, wrote this play in 1917, and it clearly shows a much freer tone than those plays that I have read that were written during the previous Victorian era. In this play, a group of people, strangers for the most part, are invited to an unusual midsummer stay. Each person present has a secret regret, a path that they wished that they had taken. When, on Midsummer's Eve, a magical forest appears, each enters and get a chance to see the people they might have been had they taken that other path.
This "tragicomedy" is quite a wonderful story. I first picked it up with some trepidation, as some plays are rather too bare boned. However, Mr. Barrie included many notes and sidebars that make this play read just as easily as any prose story. It has quite an interesting lesson, and yet is very entertaining. I hope that I am able to find this play being performed somewhere, as I certainly enjoyed reading it. I think that you will enjoy reading it, too.

Book Description
Married by special agreement to John Shand, Maggie Wylie proves to be a highly effective voice for her politician husband. One of the author's most realistic and important theatrical works — graced with flashes of sly humor and dramatic irony — entertainingly develops the theme that behind every successful man is a woman.

COMTESSE. Mrs. Shand, excuse me for saying that if half of what I hear be true, your husband is seeing that lady a great deal too often. (MAGGIE is expressionless; she reaches for her stocking, whereat her guest loses patience.) Oh, mon Dieu, put that down; you can buy them at two francs the pair. Mrs. Shand, why do not you compel yourself to take an intelligent interest in your husband's work?
